TOWARDS A BOOKLAUNCH WHILE KAS OOSTERHUIS‘S HYPERBODY IS A WELL-KNOWN RESEARCH GROUP/ STUDIO WITHIN THE FACULTY, ITS PRODUCTION AND RHETORIC CAN SOMETIMES BE A LITTLE OVERWHELMING FOR SOME STUDENTS (AND TEACHERS). BK CITY – Now, the group’s professor hopes that he can explain his methodology and philosophy more clearly in a new book called ‘Towards a New Kind of Building’ set to be launched on 18 March at 15:00 at the faculty. Kas Oosterhuis, the professor at Hyperbody and a principal at ONL (Oosterhuis Lénárd) became involved in parametric design and non-standard architecture in the early eighties. While working with the artist Ilona Lénárd, he discovered, as he put it “that intuition and logic are two sides of the same coin. They are systematically interwoven. Intuition can and must be trained to give direction to logical thinking”. Looking at ONL or Hyperbody creations seems to hint at a more playful formal attitude, but underneath there is technological rigour, perhaps not often enough seen at the faculty. “When Zaha Hadid designs buildings, she determines the form while the engineers do all the technical calculations. We want to go beyond this mentality and deliver a fully developed integrated project.” Technology and architecture systematically interwoven. The book’s focus will be divided between the works of ONL, Hyperbody and third parties. The book is partially a reference for those who are interested in the work of the studio, especially since, except an optional minor (Bsc5), nothing from Hyperbody is taken up in the core Bachelor curriculum. To those who claim that the approach taken by the studio is too futuristic or unrealistic, Oosterhuis answers: “The future is here. I cannot emphasize enough that what we do here is not futuristic, we’re simply taking

advantage of available computer numerically controlled technologies.” He also adds that there is nothing mutually exclusive about the Hyperbody’s methodology and an architect’s (ideological) agenda. “I’m concerned about the transparency in building and design processes as well as the understanding of building physics and a more efficient way of using building materials.” Social non-standard housing (or anything else, really)? A definite possibility. The future publications by the Hyperbody group will include the fourth installment in the interactive architecture series, which will be dedicated to Quantum Architecture, while the fifth volume in the series about Robotic Architecture is being prepared. Also, a catalogue of Hyperbody’s work in the last 10 years is set to appear, entitled ‘Hyperbody, the first decade’. Meanwhile, Kas Oosterhuis is not looking back, but forward: “We live inside evolution, we see it unfolding in front of our eyes through the fast track evolution of industrial products and scientific thinking”. And now we have the opportunity to read about it in the the new book as well. (PS) ’Towards a New Kind of Building‘ will be presented on 18 March 2011 15.00h at the Oostserre. hyperbody.nl twitter.com/kasoosterhuis linkedin group: The Expert Formerly Known as the Architect
