THE FASTER THE FASHION . . . BY HANNAH MILITANO

We’ve all been there; a closet full of clothes, but nothing to wear. We seem to be purchasing a new item for every other occasion. But the question becomes, how ethical could it possibly be to purchase a t-shirt for $5? Your clothing should cost you more than your morning cup of coffee. We buy questionably inexpensive garments that last us approximately 3-5 washes and then we discard. After this incredibly short lifetime of our clothing, where does it all go? Landfills. Recent studies show, the amount of clothing that is properly recycled is so minute, it is less than one percent. Francois Souchet, head of the Make Fashion Circular initiative claims, “Over the past 15 years clothing production has doubled, while the amount of time we wear those clothes before throwing them away—usually to be landfilled or incinerated—has fallen dramatically.” The majority of clothing and textile waste that is rapidly piling up in these landfills are non-biodegradable. Items derived from synthetic materials can take up to 400 years to breakdown. Even natural fibers might sit within a landfill for approximately 200 years before beginning to disintegrate, all the while emitting hazardous gasses contributing to the pollution of our planet. The faster the fashion, the larger our landfills.

“THE FASTER THE FASHION, THE LARGER OUR LANDFILLS.”

We live in an age where each and every one of us has accessibility to a platform where we may pronounce ourselves as, “influencers.” God forbid we post ourselves wearing the same outfit twice. Rocking a different look per post means sacrificing more than you may know; the quality of your clothing to say the very least. By participating in this seemingly endless, reckless cycle that is fast fashion, we compromise the integrity of garment workers overseas and needless to say, our environment.
