INTERVIEW WITH MARKUS BREHM What does photography mean to you? Photography to me is creating images that viewers will enjoy, that inspire and display my passion for it. It’s an art of observation and imagination. How did you develop an interest in photography? I always had a keen interest in photography. My initial focus was on Street and Travel Photography, Landscapes and Architecture. I had joined a local Photography club, met likeminded Photographers and friends and successfully entered photography competitions. I received my first commercial commissions, achieved recognition and drew attention to my work. It wasn’t until 2016, that a friend of mine approached me to update his existing Modelling Portfolio. Initial hesitancy quickly grew into a new-found photographic passion. I invested heavily into new equipment and consider myself today an accomplished Model and Studio Photographer. How do you as a photographer make sure that the thing, person or landscape you want to shoot looks the way you want it to? It all starts by having a vision, a concept, a consciousness and understanding of your surroundings, subject matter and models. But to be honest, the best images are the ones I least expect to take. From your point of view, what makes a good picture? A good picture to me is one that you go back to and look at again and again. One that sparks your imagination, resonates with you and inspires. What were the challenges that you most commonly faced and how did you deal with them? Getting used to new equipment. As they say, ‘practice makes perfect’.
How important is it for a photographer to “connect” with his subjects to bring out their true self? It’s hugely important to connect with the models I work with. It’s a creative collaboration with everyone involved in the shoot. I focus on creating an environment that the model is comfortable in and can be natural in their interaction with me and the lens. Which one is your favorite lens and why do you prefer it? I am currently using a ‘normal-length’ 55mm prime lens by Carl Zeiss. I find it gives me the best quality and sharpness for my studio photography with creative lighting.
Which photographers influenced you, and how did they influence your thinking, photographing, and career path? Some of my favourite photographers are Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Zuzana Breznanikova. They display creative imagination, capturing ‘decisive moments’ and are not afraid to be different. What, in your opinion, is most important to consider while shooting portrait pictures? Can you walk us through the actual process that you use to set up a portrait? A good pre-shoot communication is essential to manage expectations, exchange concepts and ideas. I strive to make each model recognize their own differences and make them acceptable by helping them to embrace who they are and allow them to feel comfortable in their own skin. I am not following a ‘process’ but rather interact with each model individually by creating an environment that they feel comfortable in. Which editing software do you usually use? As how good would you describe your skills in that software? I use Adobe Lightroom. I know my way around it and am skillful enough to enhance the images post-editing without compromising the essence of the model. My images have been described as ‘raw and natural’ with focus on the authenticity and distinctiveness of each Model. Exactly what it is you want to say with your photographs, and how do you actually get your photographs to do that? I would like to inspire, tell a story and engage the viewer. Inspiration is all around us – my travels, my work, the people I meet….. To quote Ansel Adams: “You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.” In your free time, what kind of pictures do you like to shoot? I love to travel and find myself entertained with Street and Travel photography, fascinated by different cultures and capturing the world around me.
