GASPER TRATNIK Photographer Tasos Anestis

28 years old, Gasper Tratnik is from small country Slovenia, Europe. He is working professionally in fashion industry since 2013. He has been travelling and working as a model in Asia and Europe for 3 years. When he returned back to his country, he founded his personal brand called GT collection. Tell us about your career as a model. How were you discovered? I started modeling in 2012. I was discovered by an agent that owns project mister Slovenia. I attended this event and on the end I was in top 10. The same agent sent me next year in 2013 in Asia, where I was working professionally as a model. I spent 3 months in Bangkok, after that I went to Kuala Lumpur for 4 months. After 7 months living in Asia, I had to return to my country because I had to finish my degree. In 2014 I went back to Asia working as a model again, but this time I was living in Singapore, Hong Kong and China. Year after, in 2015 I spent most of the time in Milan, Italy and 2016 I went to Barcelona for short trip of 3 months. Since summer 2016 I live in Slovenia where I still work as a model, from time to time I get jobs from Austria or Croatia.

BLOUDER In your own eyes, what was the moment that your career really took off? I think this was in 2016 when I returned to my country after long time. People were following and supporting me all the time while I was outside of my country. I gained a lot of experiences and material and people noticed this. This also helps me a lot with my another business that I run now. What’s one of the most interesting shoots that you’ve done? There were many interesting shoots in my career. But if I just mention few of them, I would say… one in Thailand, where I was booked for magazine and we went to Krabi, beautiful destination. Another one was for sure in Singapore for another magazine, again on the beautiful place, and last year I did a campaign for Slovenia and Croatia, shooting was at Croatian coast. Did you ever have a bad/crazy experience during your modeling career? I didn’t have bad or crazy experience, once we just had to make a lot of pics for suits, but outside was 38 degrees or more. It was crazy hot and shooting was all day long. This was in Singapore. What workout do you do to get that amazing body? You need to eat clean, and then train. I cook myself and I know what I eat. But of course if you want to be fit, you need to train as well. I workout 2 – 3 times per

18 | ISSUE 12 VOL. 01

week, depends on time. I usually do high intensity interval training (HIIT), I do a lot of repetition but not so many weights. What do you eat before working out? Usually I train in the morning, so my breakfast looks like oatmeal or eggs. What does your post-workout nutrition and supplementation look like? I usually take one protein shake after workout and after that I eat lunch that contains chicken, rice and vegetables. What does your current training look like? What do you like most about it? I start my training with squats. I don’t put so may weights, but I do a lot of repetition. After that I do other muscle groups. I like this kind of training because I sweat a lot but I still keep my muscle tonus. What is your favorite thing to do when not working? I work a lot on myself. I read books, I educate myself and last year I focus 100% o my rand that I’m building. What’s a typical week like for you? I don’t have a lot of free time, as I work most of the time. When you are building something from zero, you have to put a lot of work into it. The only day that I take off is Sunday when I visit

my parents and brothers. How did you start your GT collection? I started GT collection in 2017 with an idea to have my own personal brand. As I work in fashion industry since 2013, I’m pretty well aware of hot trends and this is what I want to share with the world through my brand. What inspired the GT collection? GT collection is my passion. It’s part of my life, it’s another step in my career. I will do anything to raise it to the sky. Give us 5 facts about you, people may not know. I have 2 brothers, but none of them is working in fashion industry. I’m almost blind on my left eye (This is damage from my born), I’m just 179 cm tall, My original profession is graduated mechanical engineer (I finished my study in 2013), I drink 3 coffees per day. What projects are you presently working on? Besides modeling I focus 100% on my brand GT collection. Do you have any advice for those who want to start modeling? You need to believe in yourself, be patient and work on yourself. Educate yourself, ask people for advices ad connect with the right people.

CLARA JEANNE REED Photographer Alyssa Dickson

BLOUDER

What does photography mean to you? To me, photography is a form of self expression, a release in a way. There’s something quite therapeutic in releasing creative ideas into photographs.

when the shoot begins I have a basis of what to start with and then I branch off from there. I’m a huge control freak when it comes to photographing, but I also always try to be open to spontaneous ideas.

How did you develop an interest in photography? I started photography early in high school. It started as a way to distract myself from things that were going on in my life and then turned into a way to release those feelings through photographs. It quickly went from a hobby to a passion.

From your point of view, what makes a good picture? Oh so many things. Photography is a very subjective art form, but for me the most important things that make a good picture are originality and some kind of narrative. There needs to be something unique that holds the audience’s attention, and I think photographs are always more interesting when there’s some kind of story or meaning to derive from it.

How do you as a photographer make sure that the thing, person or landscape you want to shoot looks the way you want it to? I always plan my shoots out extensively, in terms of posing, narrative, styling, etc. That way

What were the challenges that you most commonly faced and how did you deal with them? Every artist will always deal

with some kind of hate. Some of the work I’ve done is seen as controversial to a lot of small minded individuals from my small southern Idaho hometown. Not everyone is going to like what you do, you have to learn to take criticism. But you also have to never let it change who you are as an artist. I think that’s important. For me, my art is often about me for me, not for other people. How important is it for a photographer to “connect” with his subjects to bring out their true self? I think it’s very important to establish a relationship of trust with the subject, the more comfortable they feel around you the more open they’ll become and as a result the photos will have a different level of intimacy within them.

SEPTEMBER 2018

BLOUDER Since the photography techniques and equipment change quickly, it is important to stay up-to-date. What do you do to always keep up with the times? Always being open to trying new methods and new equipment is important. I also love renting equipment, to save money and test it before committing. Nowadays almost everyone has access to devices with which it is possible to take pictures. What do you think is the difference between a professional photographer and any other hobby photographer? Besides the obvious ones like talent and technical skill, I think the main difference I see between a professional photographer’s photographs and a hobbyist’s is the passion of the artist and the complexity of the photo themselves. Take portraits for example, there’s a big difference in meaning and narrative between someone’s senior picture type portrait and the portrait that maybe has the cover of Time. Passion shines through, professional photographers see the picture before its taken. Which one is your favorite lens and why do you prefer it? I love my Nikon AF Nikkor 35 and 50 mm lenses, they work seamlessly for both my analog and digital cameras. Which photographers influenced you, and how did they influence your thinking, photographing, and career path? Some of my forever inspirations are Petra Collins, Olivia Bee, and Henri- Cartier Bresson. Collins and Bee both do a lot of magazine work, fashion, editorial, or album covers. I’ve always admired their use of color film and they continually inspire me to shoot both editorial and fine art. Bresson is more documentary style, and therefore very different from my style, but his pictures never fail to leave me awestruck in his ability to make something interesting out of the ordinary. What, in your opinion, is most important

56 | ISSUE 12 VOL. 01

to consider while shooting portrait pictures? Can you walk us through the actual process that you use to set up a portrait? For me the most important thing when shooting portraits is dynamics. There needs to be something interesting within the frame of the photo that draws people in and promotes them to look further. When I set up a portrait I usually pose the model in a specific position and shoot that same position from every possible angle; above, below, profile, etc. Which editing software do you usually use? As how good would you describe your skills in that software? I shoot a lot of both digital and film. And for both I use Adobe Lightroom for most of the editing and then Photoshop for any touch ups. Exactly what it is you want to say with your photographs, and how do you actually get your photographs to do that? I want my pictures to tell a story, to make someone feel something. Maybe when you first look at the photo you don’t quite know what it’s conveying, but I think the art of the search is vital to the success of the photograph sometimes. I don’t think there’s any specific goal I’m trying to accomplish with my photos, they’re just an extension of my body at this point. Another way to express myself. In your free time, what kind of pictures do you like to shoot and which ones do you avoid? When it comes to my style of photography I don’t like to shoot things that I can’t control. I like to use photography as a canvas, and paint the photograph from scratch, building the scene itself. For me having that kind of control with a photo seems to represent everything that photography isn’t, straying away from the idea of the “decisive moment”. So mostly I like to do creative, conceptual shoots on the fly and not necessarily avoid documentary or landscape but I definitely don’t shoot them as much.
