July is Blak History Month! July is such a busy month for the community and it starts off on the 1st with the Coming of the Light celebrations in the Torres Strait Islands and in many communities around Australia. The following week of course is NAIDOC week. In Brisbane, Friday is the biggest day for the community with week long celebrations culminating at Musgrave Park, South Brisbane. Walking around the park I was struck by the increasing diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander entrepreneurship. While there were plenty of government and community organisation stalls, it was the increased volume of Murri stalls selling everything from beanies and boxing gloves to rice and sambal and everything in between that was so exciting. NAIDOC is such an important part of the Australian calendar today. It provides our communities and schools with an opportunity to celebrate and commemorate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. On a personal note, it was great seeing some of the images we've created over the past few years floating around Musgrave on the back of t-shirts and stalls. Many schools will be holding their celebrations over the next term. Keep subscribing to our newsletter as we may be able to provide you with new resource ideas for 2011 and beyond. What we've been working on this month ..... Lagaw Gub Leesa and Michael have had a great time this year working with Marilyn and Alex from Treading the Pathways, a Torres Strait Islander Dance programme. Lagaw Gub is a unique teacher professional development resource. Equipping everyday teachers to teach the dances and culture of Dennis Newie, a dancer from Mua Island (St Paul) in the Torres Strait. Future Dreaming Michael and Leesa worked with the Faculty of Education at Australian Catholic University to produce a logo for their Mathematics program. Designed to work with young parents and their children, the Future Dreaming logo expresses the idea of education as something that everyone in the community can aspire to.
Institute of Modern Art Aboriginal artist Vernon Ah Kee's cantchant exhibition at the Institute of Modern Art was part of the prestigious Venice Biennale in 2009 and is currently being toured throughout Australia by the IMA. Blacklines was contracted to write for this education resource and it is now available for free download as a pdf. A perfect resources for Senior Visual Art teachers and students.
Laguna Bay Publishing Lisa, Kym, Leesa and our deadly sista Gladys Willis from Townsville have been working on creating teacher's notes for Laguna Bay Publishing's Yarning Strong series which will be available early in 2011. It has been really great reading through unpublished manuscripts of some highly regarded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors and hope that we can do their works justice.

Resources we recommend ..... Sharing Culture Online is a fantastic resource developed by Gadj and Jody Maymuru. Sharing Culture Online is an easy to use online tool designed to help record, store and pass on language and cultural knowledge. Fantastic for community, parents, schools and government agencies, this website is an essential resource for all classrooms.
Be Counted is an independent magazine produced by experience Indigenous journalist Solua Middleton from the Gold Coast. While it is available online for free, Blacklines highly recommend your teachers and your school library subscribes directly. Support Indigenous independant media.
Blak History Month is a grassroots movement that is dedicated to building on the success of NAIDOC week to create the whole month of July as a celebration of Australia's Blak History. The Australian Blak History Month for students and teachers website is produced by Blacklines team member Leesa Watego. It features a number of free resources for teachers. You can download the poster, nearly 100 free fact sheets about Great Moments in Blak History, student workbooks and quizzes.
