Controller handling details and customizing options When playing the factory Program Presets you may have noticed that they sound a bit dry. This doesn’t mean that effects are missing, it is about the Controller action. Although the Fusion provides four cool Controller Knobs the way how they are assigned is pretty important to get access to parameters that can make a sound more interesting.

Look at the picture above and you can see the assignment menu page for the entire Controller section.

4 Control Knobs, 4 Trigger Buttons and 2 SW switches. Additionally there are the Pitch Bend Wheel and Modulation Wheel, the Foot Controller and finally Aftertouch. The pic below shows the Fusion’s Controller section, located on the panel’s left. In total you have more than 10 different Controllers available and actually you shouldn’t hesitate to use them for every Program Preset. Now for the bad news: The factory presets controller setting is rather poor. Not bad at all, but on the today’s view it isn’t smart. It is a quite rudimentary and especially the important and so useful four Control Knobs are assigned with Equalizer, Effects intensity and envelopes. This means: It’s time to improve them like those I did for the ROM-Expansion. Let’s see how this can be done quickly and effectively. The above pic is a screenshot of Modulation Matrix start page, this is where you assign the Controllers. To make something right away you could check this with your own Fusion: Select factory preset ROM: PRESET 1 F7 (046) Symphonos, which is a nice pad sound with a stringish sound character. When testing the Controller settings you will find out, that the Control Knobs 1 and 2 get you access for a bit more Bass and Treble, the Knobs 3 and 4 allow changes for the attack and release time, Pitch Bend range is +/- 12 semitones and the Modulation Wheel is for adding vibrato. Frankly speaking: This is not that what makes such a sound full of life when using those Controllers. But the good news is, that you can change that and save the result on a new memory position, perhaps somewhere in your User Bank.

For getting a real smart personal Controller setting you should make a little plan in the first place. What would you like to control with them? You have many options and here is one example.

Knob 1: Pitch control for OSC2 to alter the octave setting between both OSCs. Knob 2: Filter Cutoff for the main filter to make the sound darker while playing. Knob 3: Envelope Time Attack to make the attack really fast. Knob 4: Effect intensity, to get the sound into a big hall, when you need it. Trigger Button 1: Overall pitch control to get a transpose. Trigger Button 2: Portamento time for slide effects. Trigger Button 3: Envelope time to make the sound more staccato. Trigger Button 4: OSC 2 Volume to make the sound a bit thinner when you need it. You can take the chance to edit the Modulation Wheel settings too. A vibrato effect is nice, but the current setting is a bit to much. And if you don’t like the Pitch Bend action, then change it too.

Category Search All Program Presets are category tagged. This means that you call them by name as soon as you push the Fusion’s category button that is located on the most upper right beside the display.

Program Presets Those are the sounds you use to play. You can recognize them by viewing the Controller assignments and they simply “ready”. Everything is setted: The velocity, effects, controllers.

Archive Programs They are provided as additional service. These are the ones you should not play as they are just audio search tools when looking for specific sounds. They are dry, no velocity, no Controllers – as pure as samples are.

Drum Machine tips The Fusion is offering even a Drum Machine and the Arpeggiator is the resource for this. If you are looking for content just skroll down to the end of this PDF to get more informations about the “Fusion Drums by kpr.

Layering sounds The most modern sample-based synthesizers allow layering samples and waveforms. This is a pretty easy-to-use chance to get new sound colors even by using the trial-error method. Just use the ears to find out how the result sounds good or not when stacking two samples. Sometimes one sample instruments lacks a specific harmonic or the bass range is too weak. Then you can simply add a second sample that provides exactly this, adjust the amount by setting the right level and maybe that’s it. But it is good to know what happens here. Both sample instruments come up with a harmonic content and when mixing them you will find out, that there is a increment of specific harmonics and levels of them on the one side and even decrement of others - what you did not expect. This might be the masking effect. When layering two sounds where a frequency range is identical, a masking effect will happen and it depends on the actual level how intense the masking is as it depends on the level of the concerned frequeny. If it is identical, the masking effect is 100%. You can use this if you want to eliminate a harmonic partial, just by layering to sounds.

This is not all. If you are using a sample-based synthesizer which allows individual envelope settings for each Oscillator you can even control the duration of this effects. Add or mask the harmonics you want simply by controlling the time duration, or even with a LFO if you want it with a bit “liveness”, for instance a low piano note that changes it’s harmonic spectrum during the decay time. There are even more options. Is a sound a bit sterilely? This can happen with a sample when it works with a short sustain-loop. Then you can add a waveform that provides a periodic or random animation and adjust the level how intense the effect will be for the general sound. This method works for many instruments from Grand Piano to Brass as well as Synths and even Drums. You like a Grand Piano sample but it lacks the bell tone in the upper range? Add one different and remove the remaining middle and lower ranges with the keyboard level scaling (Volume). You need a typical 80s D50 sound like the famous Fantasia factory preset? Select a soft airy pad synth sample and add a triangle or belltree or xylophone sample and care for the right envelope setting of it. Consider the above mentioned masking effect to lower specific harmonic partials.

Analog Synth simulation tips The ROM-Expansion V3.0 provides a lot of synthesizer samples, mostly taken from legends like Minimoog, Yamaha CS80, Korg PS3100, Roland MKS80, Oberheim OB8 and many more. But if you want to combine them with sounds created with the Fusion’s VA (Virtual Analog) in a Mix, then the following tipps might be a nice assistance for you.

The Fusion’s VA is useful for the recreation of classic synth sounds like the famous Minimoog, Roland Juno 60, Oberheim OB-Xa and more. For this venture the Fusion provides several Filter types and Modulation options. In case of Oberheim you need to check those features in the first place to take the right tools. The Filter of a OB-Xa is a switchable 12 dB 2-Pole and 24 dB 4-Pole type. As the Fusion Filter type options are as they are it is useful to work with the Low Pass 1-pole and 4-pole. Keep in mind that the 1-pole does not provide Resonance, so if you want it you must select the 2-pole type instead. The OB-Xa Oscillator 2 allows a detune to Oscillator 1, so you should work with this on the Fusion too. Additionally you can add the Random Detune for both Oscillators, but not too much, the Oberheim synths are quite tuning stable compared to Moog. Next stop is the Envelope setting for the Amplitude and Filter. The Oberheim Envelopes are a bit slow, and the Fusion’s are fast. When using the Delay function you can simulate the slowness, but just a tiny little bit Delay. You can add FM to the both Oscillators as the OB-Xa allows that too. The Pulse waveform can be modulated, this is easy to realise with the Fusion’s Mod Matrix. Just add a additional LFO and use a typical Oberheim range between 0.1 and 20 Hz. The Oberheim Filter sounds pretty smooth and silky, but the Fusion’s Filter is strong and, well, digital and if you use Resonance above 60 or 80% even aggressive and snappy, depends on the Filter Envelope setting. So you must be careful with the Filter adjustment to make it right. Leave the Oscillator 3 out, the OB-Xa offers only two of them. And don’t forget to ignore the Velocity Modulation, the OB-Xa is a non-velocity keyboard. It was available as 4, 6 or 8 voice polyphonic synth, so you can even limit the Fusion’s polyphony to this value the recreate the real vintage feeling when playing it and loose a voice when hitting more keys simultaneously. You will find this parameter on the Program menu subpage Pitch (Number of Voices).

Orchestral instrument tips Now about getting more out of the orchestral instruments. Usually they are provided as multisamples and Program Presets. To sound real it helps to consider the facts of an orchestra. This means: The instrument position within the orchestra as well as the typical dynamic range how the player’s are doing their performance.

Also the real playing range of the instruments (lowest note, highest note), the invididual attack of a played note, the brilliance intensitiy and the modulation (vibrato, tremolo, etc.) is important to the result. The ROM-Expansion Program Presets Controllers are assigned and setted to allow even a realtime control when playing those sounds.

Piano Tips Every pianist has a personal favorite piano sound. Sometimes two or even more. It is the general timbre character, the dynamic range and the demand can be vary by the actual style, a specific song or location. This is where the ROM-Expansion comes in. There are several piano sounds in there and you can choose the right one just by using the category search function.

Use the Controllers to adjust individual setting details right away. And the Master EQ for further details like the bass power and the treble intensity. It is not necessary at all to use so called velocity-switch piano samples. The disadvantage might be the hearable steps between the dynamics p, mf and f. The oldschool method to simulate the seamless velocity is using a Filter cutoff envelope setting. Surely this is not the real thing, but the advantage is the access to a wider range of the timbre control.

General Tips for Acoustic Instruments The most acoustic instruments have a very limited note range. When using samples it should be considered if they have to sound real and natural. On the other hand you can get quite interesting new tone colors when playing those instruments even far away from their original note range or using the Fusion’s transpose and coarse functions, stack them with other instruments and add pretty unusual and unnatural effects like Phaser, Flanger, Rotary Speaker, Echo.

Multi-timbral Tips The most ROM-Expansion samples are created carfully economical to allow quick Program Preset changes as well as using several instruments within a Mix even with a standard 64 MB Fusion RAM. If you run out of memory you can try to find a Program Preset which is done with only one OSC, in many cases the sound will be still there, especially within a bigger song arrangement with several instruments. The creation of the soundbanks ROM Exp 3-6 was intended to provide this kind of instruments.

Data Handling Tips Before you work with this data handling description you should have read the concerned chapter in the original owner’s manual at least once. Then make sure that all your data is saved as backup on CD or DVD, computer harddisk, USB stick or CF Card. To load the Presets data to the Fusion: Unzip the attached data. You will get a Program folder or you can also create a folder for the soundbank on your computer desktop with the name for example "my new sounds”, etc., drop the unzipped Program data into the folder and move it to the Fusion via USB or CF Card. Use the PDF docs for Presets archive purposes and consult the Fusion owner´s manual for references concerning data handling. Notice: Please always use the extra Program files according to the PDF docs to play. The other Programs bank named archive Programs that are provided with sample libraries are always only for specific sample search purposes, not to play them as they´re the pure samples without Velocity etc. programming. This is useful when searching specific samples. Thanks for considering this. To load the samples to the Fusion: Extract the zip file and you will get a folder with several data subfolders. Open this folder and you will find the Volume folder, this folder contains all other subfolders Mix, Pattern, Song, Program, etc. Connect the instrument with the computer via USB and drop the Volume folder (PC) or single data folders (Mac) to the Fusion´s harddisk and use the Process function to verify the data. Check the Alesis owner´s manual guides for additional detailed data handling and transfer instructions (available as download from their site).

If you need a step-by-step handling instruction the following might be the right one for you: * The downloaded data or CD contains a folder called VOLUME * In VOLUME are the folders - PROGRAMS, MULTISAMPLES, SAMPLES, MIX, PATTERN, SONG, TABLE * With the downloaded data or the CD in your Mac/PC extract the data. * Connect your Fusion using USB - the drive will show up on your desktop * Open the Fusion drive - you will see a folder called VOLUME. If you see another folder name, then open it until you see the concerend VOLUME folder. * Open this - you will see various folders, three of which are called PROGRAMS, MULTISAMPLES, SAMPLES, etc. as described above. * Open PROGRAMS - you will see the various program banks. * Open the folder PROGRAMS - you will see a folder with the product title like ROMExpansion. * Drag that into the PROGRAMS folder on your Fusion. * When it has copied across, close the PROGRAMS folder on your Fusion and open the MULTISAMPLES folder on your Fusion - you'll see the various multisample banks * On the CD or DVD, open the MULTISAMPLES folder - you'll see a folder, again with the product title. * Drag that into the MULTISAMPLES folder on your Fusion. * When it has copied across, close the MULTISAMPLES folder on your Fusion and open the SAMPLES folder on your Fusion - you'll see the various sample banks * On the CD, open the SAMPLES folder - you'll see a folder named with the product title. * Drag that into the SAMPLES folder on your Fusion - this copy process will take a little while what depends on the size of the data. * Once it has copied across, unmount your Fusion's drive according to the conventions of your Mac/PC. * Disconnect the USB cable. Make a save disconnection if your computer allows this option. * The Fusion will display all sorts of 'Building XYZ banks' progress displays - this is normal. * On the Fusion, press GLOBAL. * Press ITEM - you should see a list of SONGS, MIXES, PROGRAMS, PATTERNS, MULTISAMPLES, SAMPLE, if you don't, press BACK until you do. * Move the cursor to select PROGRAMS.

* Press PROCESS. * Press VERIFY followed by YES then OK. * Press OPEN, select the now loaded product title, press PROCESS, VERIFY followed by YES then OK. * Press BACK to get back to the list. * Select MULTISAMPLES and repeat as above from PROCESS * Select SAMPLES and repeat as above from PROCESS The sample library with archive Program Presets should now be installed and you should be able to use the sounds. Now do the same with the actual Program Presets bank(s).

Notice: The problem you have by copying it to a CF Card is that everything is referenced to exist on the HD within the various Program Preset names so the Program Preset is looking for a multisample called 'HD/Multisamples/producttitle/producttitle.afi' which in turn are referencing samples 'HD/Samples/producttitle/producttitleXXX.afs' which, of course, neither can find because they don't exist.

If you want to reorganize or delete data on your Fusion: Be sure that you understood the data structure, reference system and handling details clearly. If not you can get into really hot water as data conflicts might occur, error messages will appear in the display and a worst case can happen: Your Fusion will not work properly again. To avoid anything like that you should always backup your entire Fusion hard disk content on your computer system’s hard disk and CD-R or DVD-R or USB Data Storage devices like USB-Sticks or external hard drives.
