O.S NEWS

Time does not stand still, with a full building programme in place at the College, much to be completed later this year; a real focus on next year, 2018, when we will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the College, then known as the Nonconformist Grammar School; not least all the challenges that running a school, now at its optimum size presents. Many special events will be organised throughout next year to which we hope many OS and their families will be attracted. At the Annual General Meeting on 9 March, Kate Coysten was invested as President of the Society for the next two years. She is only the third female to hold this office, following in the footsteps of Irene Pearman (née Hockley) in 2003 and Sally Baker (née Stearn) in 2007; all from Young House. Having spent two years at the College, Kate left in 1993, to take up a position at the Central School of Speech and Drama from which she graduated in 1996 with a BA in Acting, since which time she has worked predominantly in Musical theatre in The West End and on tour. Some of her major credits include: The Wizard of Oz, Sister Act, The Sound of Music (all at The London Palladium), The Secret Garden (Edinburgh and Toronto), My Fair Lady (Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and national tour), Les Miserables (The Palace Theatre and national tour), The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (West Yorkshire Playhouse), and Salad Days (national tour). She has also performed in pantomime including Cinderella, Snow White, Dick Whittington and Jack and The Beanstalk; the first of these at The Rhodes Arts Complex in Bishop’s Stortford in 2012-13, where she appeared as the Fairy Godmother. Kate is also a vocal coach and holds musical theatre workshops for local performing arts schools. Kate is very much a local girl, living in Sawbridgeworth, her home town, and is looking forward to meeting old school friends and making new ones, and playing an active part in the life of the OSS. It’s her way of saying thank you to the College for the opportunity it gave her. Inevitably there are a number of deaths to report, most notably that of ‘CIM’ Jones, school master, sportsman, coach, Olympian, whose contribution the College, as a pupil, teacher of geography, Governor, England Schoolboy Manager/Selector in hockey was immense. A memorial service was held in Norwich in January at which a number of his prodigies were present, some fifty years or so on. The programme of ‘reconnecting’ with as many OS as possible is forging ahead and is proving a real success with many a delighted former pupil being put in touch with old friends and attending OS events. This process is ongoing and my thanks go to Gail Edgar, Jennifer Hanson, Julie Pridmore and Kevin Webb for all the work they do for the OS Society. John Rycroft

FROM THE HEADMASTER, jeremy gladwin As I write this, building work at the College continues apace. We expect Trotman Girls’ Boarding House, Rowe Boys’ Boarding House, Collett Boys’ Day House and Robert Pearce House to open in autumn 2017. Our Bursar, Malcolm Hemingway and one of our Governors, Guy Baker (AH, 76-83) have taken leading roles in this tremendous progress. I would like to thank Malcolm and Guy and all the Governors and Staff who have given so freely of their time in bringing these projects to fruition. Once all the current construction work is finished, we will close School House so that preparations can begin for its refurbishment. This will include provision of a new classroom wing, Senior School Common Room, administrative hub and main entrance to the College. New and updated facilities are vital to ensure our pupils receive the best possible education. However, as a charity we must always make sure these facilities are available to the widest possible public. This is why we offer financial assistance to children who would benefit from a College education, but whose parents could never afford the school fees. Each year we spend around £500,000 on means-tested bursaries for about 6% of the pupils attending the College. Included in this group are a number of children who are granted 100% bursaries. The Governing Council aims to grow the percentage of income spent on meanstested bursaries to 4% of budgeted income. This is why our fundraising efforts, spearheaded by our Development Office, are so vital. The College does not have a large endowment and fees have never covered the full cost of an education here. The

swimming pool, the Ferguson Lecture Theatre, the bursaries and scholarships that benefit so many pupils during their time at the College were only made possible thanks to previous generations of donors. Effectively everyone’s fees are subsidised and this virtuous circle of philanthropy needs to continue for the benefit of today’s pupils and for future generations. To aid us in our fundraising efforts, this summer, we will be employing a mixture of current Sixth Formers and young OS to work on our Telephone Fundraising Campaign. The young callers will update OS and parents about events at the College and ultimately ask for gifts towards our bursaries and capital programmes. These will not be cold calls as everyone we hope to speak to will receive a letter from me in advance, which will give the opportunity to opt out. We are inviting many people within the College community to make a gift according to their means, but no one will be expected to make a donation. Amongst its successes, our last telephone campaign raised enough in donations

from generous OS and parents to fund a full bursary for one of our current Sixth Formers. This opportunity has made a transformative difference to this young person, who was able to stay on at the College for their A level studies. We hope the 2017 campaign will be similarly successful. Thanking our donors is very important to me and I recently hosted the 1868 Society Legators’ Club and Headmaster’s Giving Club Lunch at the College. This was a wonderful opportunity to thank everyone who has made a deep philanthropic commitment to the College. It has also been good to meet with so many of you at the much enlarged programme of OS events. The reunion gatherings, business networking events and other social events such as OS President’s Day and the Veterans’ Dinner are all a wonderful way for OS to get together. The future is very bright for Bishop’s Stortford College and I am immensely grateful to everyone who is helping us to make our plans a reality.

A life in the day of: KATE COYSTEN (YH, 91-93), OS PRESIDENT (2017-19) Where is home? Sawbridgeworth, Herts Career? 20 years performing in musical theatre, mainly in the West End. Career plan B? To own and run a Jazz café/bistro. Earliest memory? Falling over in New York and grazing my knee. Earliest memory of BSC? Being the only girl sitting the entrance exam in the old common room. Coming from an all-girls school, it was quite daunting. Strongest memory of BSC? Doing a reading in the Memorial Hall in front of the whole upper school and all the theatrical productions I was in, directed by Mr Gibson. He was a big inspiration in my acting career. I can clearly remember how ecstatic he was when I told him I’d been offered a place at The Central School of Speech and Drama. Biggest lesson learnt at BSC? Be brave and be yourself. Your best quality? Being able to chat to anyone. Your worst quality? Talking too much. Guilty pleasure? TOWIE Who would play you

in a movie of your life? Felicity Jones. Biggest bugbear? People talking or eating loudly on a train. Dream dinner party guests? Julie Walters, Peter Kay, Adele and David Attenborough. Worst job you’ve ever done? Temping at a telecoms company answering calls on the complaints line. Starstruck moment? Lots of them… Meeting Mel Gibson on the set of Braveheart where I was doing some work experience; standing in the wing watching Bette Midler sing Wind Beneath my Wings at the Royal Variety Performance; working with Michael Crawford on the Wizard of Oz and Whoopi Goldberg on Sister Act… to name a few. Top of your bucket list? To travel more and experience different cultures and cuisines. Biggest Inspiration? My Mum. Sounds clichéd, but she has always been a constant support and inspiration in my life and was the first person to teach me to be brave and be myself. Philosophy? Never regret, just learn from your mistakes. Where would you time

travel to? Every different era of fashion so I could wear all the beautiful dresses from the Tudors to the 60s!! I’ve worn many costumes in different productions ranging from corsets and bustles in Les Miserables and My Fair Lady to the miniskirts of the 1960s in Stephen Ward and Made in Dagenham. I’d like to experience wearing them in the actual eras. First record you bought? Fantasy Island by Tight Fit. Most extravagant purchase? A pair of Prada sunglasses. I never leave home without a pair of sunglasses and you can never have too many. Biggest regret? Stopping my guitar lessons at junior school. What advice would you give to a 2017 BSC Leaver? CollEgE nEws BsC in toP 100 sCHools FoR CRiCKEt 2017 BSC has been named as one of the top 100 schools for cricket by The Cricketer magazine. Launched in 2015, the A-Z guide to cricket’s top 100 schools, The Playing Fields of England, was available in the December issue of The Cricketer. Inclusion in this guide is a major achievement for the College which was pitched against 250 other school submissions, from both the independent and state sectors. All were matched against an exhaustive set of criteria, with the schools chosen having outstanding cricket programmes, including facilities, coaching, inspiration and more.

gold CaP awaRd The catering team at Bishop’s Stortford College have won a Gold CAP Award for the sixth year running, setting a new record for excellence. The College is the first school in the UK to claim the top prize for the highest quality food and service six years in a row, and the team achieved their highest score to date. The CAP (Continuing Advancement Programme) Awards recognise excellence in catering and are regarded as the highest measure of quality, best safe practices and service. Congratulations to Catering Manager, Gary Law and all his team for the incredible hard work that they put in.

The Cricketer deputy editor, Huw Turbervill, said, ‘We hope this is a wonderful insight into schools’ cricket, serving not only as an informative guide but as a tribute to all the teachers and coaches who are nurturing the talents of future club, county and international cricketers. I have been lucky enough to visit several games this summer, and the standard of cricket has been very high’. Matt Drury, College Head of Cricket, said, ‘This is a tremendous honour for the College and we’re delighted to be in such auspicious company. Our inclusion is down, in part, to the dedication and commitment of the coaching team, grounds staff and of course, the pupils. Our Elite Sports Programme also supports our cricketers throughout the year – not just in the Summer term where tradition dictates our fixtures are played, but throughout the Autumn and Spring terms too. Cricket is played in all sections of the College, from Pre-Prep upwards and is an all year round sport here’.

HOME NEWS DUKE OF EDINBURGH Huge congratulations to Tom ALLCOCK (CH, 08-15), Matthew GREEN (CH, 08-15), Emily LYNCH (BH, 06-15) and Charles LATCHFORD (HH, 13-15) on the presentation of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards recently. They were thrilled to have the opportunity to meet the Duke of Edinburgh himself during their time at St. James’ Palace.

ST JOHN AMBULANCE Tesco recently teamed up with St John Ambulance to help spread the little known, but incredibly important lesson, of baby CPR to as many parents as possible. This involved creating a babygrow, which provides all the life-saving information parents would need should their baby stop breathing. Rob ADKINS (CH, 02-10), who is a Brand Manager at Tesco, was responsible for project managing the campaign from start to finish. He told us: ‘This was one of the most exciting and rewarding projects I’ve ever worked on at Tesco. Even one life saved would make all the hard work worth it’. The limited edition babygrows are also now available online at http://tinyurl.com/hh33dlt with all proceeds going to St John Ambulance. All at the OS Society congratulate Rob on such a wonderfully informative campaign and wish him continued success in the future.

LIFE SAVER! In July 2006 Stuart CLARKE (RPH, 95-02) took the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification course (NPLQ) that was run at BSC by Deborah Huggett. Stuart had just completed his degree at Warwick University and was about to go to teach at Richard Wagner Gymnasium school in Baden-Baden, Germany. On 19 September 2006 an announcement was made on the school’s PA system that help was needed for an emergency. Stuart was in the staff room and being a proactive and inquisitive type, he went to investigate. On reaching the stairs, he saw beneath him, a body lying on the floor with several students standing over it. Stuart ran down the stairs and immediately commenced Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The man was not breathing and had no signs of a pulse and for nearly 10 minutes Stuart continued CPR until the ambulance arrived with an external defibrillator. The man was taken to hospital where he was kept in an induced coma for a few days. Several months later Stuart was invited to his house for dinner. According to Stuart this was a really emotional evening for everyone. On Tuesday, 20th September, last year Stuart received an email from the man thanking him for 10 years of additional life. Stuart was delighted to receive the email which meant a great deal to him. That he actually saved a man’s life is an incredible achievement. That the man has enjoyed at least 10 extra years of life is fantastic news. Well done Stuart!

REMEMBRANCE DAY SALUTE Our immediate Past President, Chris FORSTER (SuH, 82-90), was awarded the great honour of sounding the Remembrance Day salute in Bishop’s Stortford. Chris, along with his colleagues at Essex Pyrotechnics with whom he has worked for the past 12 years, are known for their fabulous annual fireworks displays at Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Club, which is now the largest show of its kind in Hertfordshire. The team are humbled to have already been asked to perform the salute again in 2017. Alongside his day job as an accountant, Chris travels all over the country delivering fireworks displays with Essex Pyrotechnics - much to the delight of all those that experience them!

OS LODGE – No 5721 The Lodge continued to meet on its regular four occasions in the year, March, June, October and December, some members attending the meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge in September at Great Queen Street, in central London. Lodge members, with their wives and friends were fortunate again to be able to travel in November to the shores of Lake Como, in Northern Italy, to the Hotel Britannia in Cadenabbia. This is owned and run by OS and Lodge member Ross Whieldon, and his charming wife, Doriana. This has become a regular event in the Lodge calendar and the Lodge is so grateful to Ross and Doriana for their generous hospitality. These long weekend breaks which run from Thursday to Monday are always eagerly anticipated. This year’s date is still being arranged and as soon as it is confirmed, it will be available on the OS Events listing on the College website. With the new Master being installed at the March meeting, this year promises to be as busy as the last, with plans already underway. This will include a Ladies Night in October, to which the wider membership of the OS will be warmly welcomed. This will be held within easy reach of Bishop’s Stortford. Again when this date is confirmed it will feature on the OS Events listing. Any enquiries about any of the events mentioned above, or membership of the Lodge can be directed via John Rycroft, email: john.rycroft50@gmail.com

BRIC-A-BRAC Ed INGLIS (GH, AH, 51-59) reports on the annual Bric-a-Brac weekend that took place from 11 – 13 November. One of the newish, well appointed, warm and comfortable converted cottages opposite Church Farmhouse, Happisburgh was rented for the weekend. Other members of the party were Jack HULBERT (SH, AH, 45-49), Neil ARNOLD (SHb, 62-68), Colin STANWELL-SMITH (HH, 59-64), Peter COTTEE (Sha, 52-55) and Tim GREENHILL (AH, 61-66). After settling in, a gentle stroll was taken to Hill House for a few beers with the locals before returning to the cottage for cold meats, salads and plenty of wine and banter before bed. Sadly, the weather was not kind and the planned sea trip to the seals was cancelled. Instead the party headed for The Poachers Pocket at Bacton to watch England/South Africa rugby match. Tim (assisted by Jack) prepared the usual gourmet meal which was enjoyed with a few bottles of wine and lots of reminiscing. Sunday dawned, much brighter but it was time to depart. A good weekend was had by all.

BOOKKEEPER OF THE YEAR Alison Edwards (née WALKER) YH, 89-91 (pictured on the left), has been named Bookkeeper of the Year at a prestigious ceremony in Westminster. Alison wasn’t counting on a career in finance after agreeing to help a friend out with her calculations just eight years ago. However, the businesswoman from Rowlands Castle is now profiting from the decision after being awarded one of the biggest titles in the industry. Alison was awarded the title by the International Association of Bookkeepers (IAB) during their International Business & Skills Awards ceremony in the House of Commons. Alison started a small firm called Simply Balanced Solutions after passing her professional exams, which she took in Washington DC while her husband was on placement with the Royal Navy.

london’s aiR aMBUlanCE We congratulate Jonathan JENKINS (HH, 81-88) on his appointment as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of London’s Air Ambulance. Jonathan will take over in April, leaving Social Investment Business, where he led a number of successful programmes, which resulted in over £250m of investment into charities and social enterprises. He has had considerable frontline experience, serving as a trustee for a number of charities. Before his application for this role, Jonathan already had a keen interest in London’s Air Ambulance. He previously had raised £17,000 for the charity by taking part in the 250km Marathon Des Sables desert ultra-marathon and volunteers for bucket collections which we reported on in OS News.

oVERsEas nEws Stuart FINDLAY (SHa, 55-61) caught up with David EMERY (DBH, 42-49) and Jon ADDYMAN (SHb, 48-55) in January. Stuart’s wife, Penny cooked lamb chops served with plenty of South African Wine at their house in Stanford, Western Cape. They enjoyed reminiscing and discussed the many OS that they knew, as well as toasting the memory of CIM Jones, Colin Rose and Budge Burry, amongst others who are no longer with us. Stuart is also due to meet up with Brett JONES (SHa, 55-60) in Kruger Park where he will be joined by his son, Jamie who works in Japan.

Pauline MULLENDER (Staff, 94-15) writes: A visit to Iceland in November 2016 was intended to offer a sighting of the Northern Lights. Alas said phenomenon of nature proved elusive. There was, however, some consolation to be drawn from an opportunity to touch base with Fergus LIVINGSTONE (Staff, 00-04), last encountered at a farewell BSC Dining In Night, held in honour of John TROTMAN (Headmaster, 97-11) prior to his retirement. Fergus and his wife, Gudrun, who was born in Iceland, have relocated with their family to Reykjavik, where amongst other activities, Fergus is teaching A Level English at an international school. A shared lunch, in a traditional harbour-side fish restaurant, provided an opportunity for reminiscences to be exchanged but more importantly, this was a chance to quiz Fergus to gain insights way beyond those routinely available to the average tourist, into Icelandic culture, politics and typical life style. Others with similar travel plans in mind may like to know that Fergus can be contacted

via The Old Shoe Shop, his home in Reykjavik, which has also been converted to offer B&B style accommodation. As he pointed out, this accommodation is sans the breakfast element, given the wide range of cafes and coffee shops in the immediate locality. My fellow travelling companions and I were incidentally highly amused to hear a self-deprecating anecdote told by Fergus concerning an early attempt at a social gathering to put his fledgling Icelandic language skills to the test. Amid the ensuing confusion communication failed completely, albeit to the general amusement of many present. In a small and close knit community, teasing reminders of his mangled interpretation lingered to haunt him for some time – even to his surprise on one occasion from the President of Iceland, during a chance meeting whilst en passant at Gatwick Airport. As they continue to settle into their new surroundings, I wish Fergus and his family well and thank him again for the warmth of his recent hospitality.

Obituaries humour, a good natured sarcasm, always done with the greatest of respect. He was serene, benign, quiet, inoffensive and always charming. Budge was a Vice President of the OS Society and a long standing Committee member. He organised numerous London & South East Reunion Suppers, was a regular and popular member of The Antiques Party who met annually in Norfolk. Budge and Sarah took great interest in the OS West Country Water Polo Tour, the trip ending in a visit by the participants to Goring on the way back for one of Sarah’s cream teas. Budge was a good friend to many, a devoted husband, warm-hearted and generous, a true gentleman and a very special Old Stortfordian. BURRY – Michael (Budge) Burry (AH, SHb, 39-44) died on 19 July 2016, a few days after his 90th birthday. Budge had a very happy marriage, just one day short of 42 years. He met his wife, Sarah at Scottish Dancing in 1969, started dating in 1973, marrying in 1974 in Goring. They enjoyed the ballet, jazz and classical concerts and horse-riding. Budge was brave and courageous. He never complained, despite severe difficulties with speech, breathing and hearing towards the end. He also had mobility issues in his later years. Born 11 October 1934, in Leeds, he attended BSC as a pupil, excelling on the sports-field. He went on to read Geography at St John’s College, Cambridge and in 1959, he was appointed Head of Geography at BSC. Not surprisingly he soon became Head Coach at hockey and cricket. He had played hockey for Cambridge University and Hertfordshire and was selected to represent Great Britain at the Rome and Tokyo Olympics in 1960 and 1964. Obituaries At cricket, he made his first-class debut for Cambridge University against Warwickshire in 1959. He also played minor-counties cricket, representing Hertfordshire from 1959-69. CIM’s renowned abilities in organisation had plenty of scope when he was appointed Secretary of the College Centenary Celebrations Committee, and he deserved the highest praise for his share in the success of the Queen Mother’s visit to the School in 1968. On leaving BSC he was appointed Vice-Principal of King William’s College, Isle of Man, between 1971 and 1975, when he was appointed Headmaster of Bedford School. In 1986 he became Director of Studies at Brittania Royal Naval College, then project director at CfBT Education Trust, (now the Education Development Trust) between 1988 and 1997. The College was fortunate to have CIM’s experience and expertise as a Governor from 1995 until 2004. A Memorial Service was held at St. Stephens Church, Rampant Horse Street, Norwich on 21st January 2017. At the service, Andy Peebles (HH 60-66) shared his recollections of his friendship with CIM, which spanned five decades. Whether as Assistant Housemaster in RPH, where he was until his marriage in 1962, in teaching or in games, he was alive to the interests of individual boys and was always willing to help them. CIM will forever be admired for his lifelong support of the School, his countless sporting successes and the modesty with which he wore them. Sincerest condolences are sent to his widow, Jennifer, and their sons William and Robert.

MARSHALL – Miss Joy Marshall (SH Matron, 61-73) died on 23 December 2016 at the age of 78. She will be remembered by generations of School House pupils as a kind and caring Matron, always cheerful and diligent in her duties. The daughter of the late Arthur and Eva, she was born 20 December 1938 in Sawbridgeworth, where she lived for most of her life. As a student she attended Herts & Essex High School in Bishop’s Stortford. On leaving the College she went to work for Longmans, where she had a long and successful career. Her faith was important to her, and she was a regular attendee at Great St Mary’s where her funeral service was held on Friday, 30 December 2016. At the service, David Hopper, former staff (71-07) and a lifelong friend; Chris Woodhouse, current staff, and John Rycroft, represented the College and OSS. Her nephew conducted the service. The Committal and Memorial Service was held at Parndon Wood Crematorium, Harlow on Wednesday, 4 January 2017. One of Joy’s great passions was tennis and she was a member at both Sawbridgeworth and BS clubs. At the former she was a ladies’ singles finalist between the years 1963-83, winning on no less than 8 occasions, each year from 1963-69, and again in 1979. There were even times when she was ladies’ singles champion at both clubs in the same year. After retiring from playing she served as treasurer for many years and was honoured by the club when she was invited to be President. Joy had been in care for some time with Parkinson’s Disease. Our condolences go to her brother, Robin (DBH, 44-51), and her wider family.

May they be remembered.

a tRiP down MEMoRy lanE! tHE os digital liBRaRy aRCHiVE The OS Society has exclusive access to an online digital library archive of College publications and photos. Generous donations from a number of individual OS and the Old Stortfordian Society have allowed the amount of material available to be greatly expanded. Editions of The Stortfordian are available from 1936 to the present day and the text is all searchable. Also available are whole school photographs and Lest We Forget sections for World War One and Two. When donations allow, it is hoped to add sections of House photos and sporting photos. This archive is a great way for OS

to reminisce and is a useful research tool for anyone interested in finding out more about their family’s association with the College. Access is free. Simply go to http:// bishopsstortford-heritage.daisy.websds. net and log in with the user name of OS. The password is OS1868BSC Not having had the opportunity before to investigate the new Digital Archive in detail, I decided to take the plunge. A word of warning, you will need plenty of time, you will get side-tracked! I decided to look up our new President,

Kate Coysten (YH, 91-93). By strange coincidence Kate left in 1993 which was the year in which the College celebrated its 125th Anniversary Celebrations and now she will be President in our 150th year! There were many references to Kate, in plays, in sports teams and she had written several articles for ‘The Stortfordian’. Below are a few of the photos I came across and an extract from an article Kate had written. Please do visit this site, you will be amazed at what you find, a real trip down memory lane! Young House

The Summer Term started with a new addition to Young House - the new summer uniform. Clashing perfectly with last year’s stripes, the floral attire became a much talked about feature f the term. A usually stressful term, due to heavy workloads and revision went very smoothly and once again the House was well represented in the Pupils’ Concert. Sport, another prominent feature of any term brought the whole Senior School together for the Inter-House sports. The girls, however, were reluctant to take part, maybe because Young House is never mentioned in the awarding of trophies after the event. Despite this small embarrassment, everyone persevered to make it an enjoyable day. The first event was the hundred metre sprint, with Kate Coysten finishing slightly behind the boys. Sandra Schauerte was determined in the 400 metres, but didn’t quite get that edge, similarly with Rosie Mellis in the 800 metres. Field events included Dawn Peacock at the Javelin, Hazel Kurz at Shot-put, Liz Martin at Long Jump and Fiona Clark at Discus. They all did very well to compete and Fiona was acclaimed for gaining a fifth place, beating a ‘Boy’. All in all it was a very successful day for Young House, but we’d hate to break with tradition and win! Prizes were awarded at the end of term Young House assembly. Many girls received prizes on Speech Day: L6 History - Zoe Jones; U6 History of Art - Tracy Richards; U6 German - Jenny Taylor; U6 Biology - Alex Murdoch; Music Prize - Laila Choat; Pottery - Jenny Taylor; Drama • Kate Coysten; Geography Fieldwork - Anna Dear; Chapel Reading Fiona Clark Kate Coysten

tHE old stoRtFoRdian golF soCiEty os and BsC golF day To promote golf at the College and encourage future members of the OSGS, the OS Society invited six pupils to join the OSGS’s Autumn Golf Day at Letchworth on 22 September 2016. Housemaster of Hayward House, Simon Lipscombe, made the arrangements for the pupils who played and conducted themselves brilliantly; with two of them winning prizes. The parkland course at Letchworth proved an ideal setting for the match. The sun shone, scores were sensible and everybody had a fabulous day. The morning foursome competition was won by Stuart Findlay (SHa, 55-61) and James Scott (AH, 82-84) who scored 40 points. In second position, Mark Williams (SuH, 91-02) and Robert Smith (SuH, 95-02) who scored 37 points followed in third place by Peter St. Lawrence (RPH, 70-78) and Paddy Ireland (HH, 69-78)

with 35 points. Robert Smith won the Longest Drive and Justin Brookes (HH, 72-77) secured the Nearest the Pin title. The afternoon singles tournament, playing for the Marcus Arnold Memorial Trophy was won by Mark Williams (SuH, 91-02) with an outstanding 40 points, closely followed by current College pupils James D in second place and Matthew H in third; Collett House should be very proud of their achievements on the fairway! The day was concluded with dinner and the Prize Presentation made by OS Society Vice President Stuart Findlay (SHa, 55-61). Match organiser Peter Lennie (SH, 72-75) offered congratulations to all who played in the day’s matches. It was a great pleasure to welcome new faces to the OSGS Autumn Meeting, something that the OSGS are keen to continue at future meetings.

tHE FUtURE oF tHE osgs Following the retirement of our long-standing Leader, John Hickling, the Society has formed a small Committee, who will take over the many responsibilities John has undertaken for many years. We are grateful for his hard work. It is now going to take six of us to do the same amount of work. We are introducing several new initiatives and want to increase the playing membership and look for younger players to join us. Each year the OSGS compete for the National Halford Hewitt Cup held at Royal Cinque Ports, Royal St Georges and Princes (all ‘Open’ venues). This competition is only open to a restricted number of Public School Alumni Societies, and is played off Scratch. There

14

o.s nEws

is also the Cyril Gray Annual National Competition for Golfers over 50 years of age. Again this is off Scratch and held at Worplesdon G.C. each year. There are two Golf Society meetings a year (details on the back page). A trophy is awarded for both these events. There are also plans for a new ‘John Hickling Trophy’ to be awarded. New initiatives are in place to encourage ladies to join. Our Membership Secretary, James Scott (james. scott202@gmail.com) has a daughter who is an Assistant PGA professional. She has kindly agreed to give a lesson during the morning of our next event. As we have a morning and afternoon round, they would still be able to play if they wanted to.

Our subscription is only £10 per annum, payable when details of the first event are sent out. Obviously players must pay a green fee and for a meal (total cost usually £75 in total). Details are circulated well in advance of an event. Generous discounts have been introduced for those in full time education of 50% and 25% for those under 25. These discounts will only apply to one event per person per year at the moment; we have limited funds. They do not apply to the subscription. Whether you are a low handicap player who would like to help us win the Halford Hewitt Competition or just someone who would enjoy competing for our trophies, please get in touch with Keith Turner, Secretary (keith.turner@bmtclaw.co.uk). Guests welcome. Stuart Findlay, Chairman OSGS. Email: Stuartfindlay2016@gmail.com

Old Stortfordian Society Swimming Club Water Polo Tournament Five teams competed in the Annual Water Polo Tournament at BSC for the Tisbury Trophy on 22 October 2016; the Army who were last year’s winners, Oxford and Cambridge Universities, Colchester and, of course, the OS. For the first time in many years, the OS turned up with 11 ½ people, the half being Steve Ross (Sha, 65-72) who played a cameo role in a couple of matches! It was great to see Matt Banham (HH, 88-90) in the pool with son Elliot (Athens, 0611), while there were no less than five members of the Kendall family present. Archie Kendall (SH, 77-82) arrived with son, Matthew and daughters, Jessica and Marie. While Jessica and Nick Reynolds (HH, 08-12) took turns in goal, Matthew was right up there scoring some spectacular goals. Meanwhile, his uncle, Tim Kendall (SH, 72-77), Ross Gardiner (CH, 04-12), Doug King (HH, 85-95) and former President, Mark Jarrett (MJH, HH, 79-87) held up the centre. Our best match was against the Army. We took the lead twice through Matt Banham and Matthew Kendall, only to see the game get away from us in the last minute, losing 5-3. The combination of ample substitutes and emerging skills in playing together bodes well for the future!

The Wiltshire Trophy, the handicapped swimming race for the Older Old Stordfordian, was won by Tim Kendall again, with John Bauer second. We were delighted to welcome John back to the team, having returned to the School staff in September, he will be a welcome asset to help improve College Water Polo. We were grateful to David Clare (HH, 56-64), Irene Pearman (YH, 78-80) and Marie Kendall who, with Steve Ross, took turns to manage ‘the table’; that is timekeeping, record keeping and arguing with pushy players that the score on the scoreboard is correct! Their faultless recording of each match revealed that Oxford University were most prolific, both in their scoring to win all matches and their number of fouls! Best goalie went to Colchester, with top scorer going to the Colchester captain. Our thanks to the College for allowing us to host the tournament and for providing refreshments. We continue to arrange this annual tournament so that school students can see a good standard of water polo and be enthused to try it for themselves and have fun! Thanks also to Kevin Webb, Development Director, who took some excellent photos and helped during the day. Finally, very grateful thanks to Jennifer Hanson for all her excellent arrangements during the build up to the day. The ’66 Leavers were welcomed back to the College for their 50th Anniversary Reunion on 21 September 2016. They were joined by contemporaries from 1964-67. The weather was glorious and it was a joy to welcome back such a wonderful group of OS and their wives, some for the very first time since they left the College. We were honoured to welcome the College’s first female member of staff, Madame Castaing-Jones (61-87), as guest of honour, along with her daughters. A recreation of the victorious 1966 Fives Team photograph on the steps of the Mem Hall put all School House OS in a

jovial mood as they took great pleasure in explaining that only SH made it into the team! Pupil-led tours of the campus and Houses were followed by a tasty lunch served in what was, in 1966, the indoor swimming pool. This is now our beautiful Ferguson Lecture Theatre – a somewhat surreal dining experience for some of our guests. As coffee was enjoyed, broadcaster, Andy Peebles (HH, 60-66), shared his memories of his time at the College. Witty observations and an incredible recollection of facts and experiences

from the 1960s, and an amazingly accurate recall of initials of those present, learned from the BSC Roll call made for a light hearted address. Andy concluded his reminiscences with a humble reflection on those contemporaries no longer with us. All stood in a moment of silence, with individual reminiscences, to reflect on absent friends, giving all those present, time to reflect on friendships made, lost and rekindled.

25tH anniVERsaRy REUnion A very warm welcome was extended to the group of 1991 Leavers to celebrate their 25th Anniversary Reunion on Saturday, 8 October 2016. OS President, Chris Forster (SuH, 8290) gave the welcome address, in what, for those present was their old indoor swimming pool, followed by Chris Woodhouse who animatedly updated them on developments at the College; being dominated by the introduction of full co-education just four years after they left; the opening of the purpose built Pre-Prep and additional improvements in facilities such as the new art block, indoor swimming pool and the expansion of the Prep School. As School House Housemaster to a number of the OS present, Chris was able to share a number of humorous anecdotes about their time at the College which raised many smiles, especially at mention of the Boars Head Pub! The formality of the group photograph behind them, the group ventured off on campus and House tours. These were led by enthusiastic current pupils, during which stories were shared and memories relived. Lunch in the Ferguson Lecture Theatre was ready upon their return. The rest of the afternoon was given over to friendships being rekindled and more memories of their time at BSC being shared over a glass of wine and delicious food. Our grateful thanks to all the OS and their partners and children that joined us for the reunion. In such hectic times, it was a joy to be able to welcome them back to their old school!

Back row: Julie Pridmore (OS Administrator, 93-present), Graham Palmer (Head of Maths, 73-95), Chris Forster (SuH, 82-90), Michael Armitage (AH, 83-91), Chris Woodhouse (Deputy Head, 76-present). REMEMBRANCE DAY 2016 It was an honour to welcome Captain Lucinda Lyne, Intelligence Corps (YH, 98-00) to the Memorial Hall to deliver the Remembrance Service address on 11.11.16. Capt. Lyne left the College in 2000 and moved on to university where she joined the Cambridge University Officer Training Corps whilst she studied for a BA (Hons) in French and Business. She followed this with a MSc in Development Management with a focus on conflict prevention. In 2003 she commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst into the Royal Artillery as a Reserve Officer. Deployments to Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Gibraltar and the USA followed as a Troop Commander in an Air Defence battery. In 2009 she transferred to the Intelligence Corps. Using knowledge gained in the field army, she took on a full-time service role in Whitehall. There she worked in Defence Intelligence Operations as a strategic liaison officer to the tactical intelligence cell in Lashkar ’Gah, Helmand Province. Returning to the Reserves in 2012 after the birth of her first child, Capt. Lyne took over as second in command of 31 Military Intelligence Company. This leads on strategic defence intelligence through social media monitoring. Following Intermediate Command and Staff

College in 2015, Capt. Lyne currently oversees language requirements for the 1st Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Brigade. She has also been learning Arabic to support future operations which she hopes will lead on to a PhD looking at Defence and its approach to conflict prevention. Capt. Lyne engaged warmly with the congregation and reflected on the losses and hardships of the Great War and how she perceives that the six core values of the Army are relevant to all members of society today. The core values of Courage, Discipline, Respect for Others, Integrity, Loyalty and Selfless Commitment were explained as being as important to being a normal citizen of any age or background today as it is to being a soldier defending one’s country in war time. As a solemn mark of Remembrance, the Heads of School read the names of brave OS, Masters and College Support Staff on the Roll of Honour. This was followed by the Words of Remembrance with the Last Post played on the Mem Hall steps to signal the start of the Two Minutes Silence. The Heads of School laid wreaths next to the lists of College war lost and the Senior School stood in silence inside. Laurence Brittain (HH, 69-76) read the Words of Remembrance and Christopher Elliott (RPH, 56-59) read the bible

passage: 1 Corinthians 15:52-58. Warmest thanks are extended to Lucinda, Laurence and Chris for supporting the College in this most special of ways. We had the honour of also welcoming to the Service, the Great Nephew of College Master Ernest Alexander Knight, to whom the stunning doors of the Memorial Hall are dedicated. Ernest Knight was one of many Masters and College Staff who fought in WW1. He was the only one not to return safely after the War, losing his life near Ypres in September 1917. Dr Roger Knight generously presented the College with his Great Uncle’s medals, dog tags and letters from the Front. These are now proudly displayed in the College archive along with a citation and bronze plaque for his service which now takes pride of place at the back of the Memorial Hall next to the doors dedicated in his name. Headmaster, Jeremy Gladwin graciously accepted the beautifully framed citation and bronze plaque at the end of the Service. We look forward to welcoming Dr Knight back to the College on 11th November 2017 when he will address the Service of Remembrance to mark the Centenary Anniversary of Mr Knight’s death.

CAROL SERVICE The OS Family Carol Service took place on Sunday, 11 December. This was a fitting occasion for OS, their families and College Staff to gather together in the Memorial Hall for a traditional Service of Nine Lessons and Carols. The Service was made extra special through wonderful performances from the OS Choir conducted by Director of Music, Andrew Bruce. It is incredible to imagine that they rehearsed for just two hours together before the Service. All the Carols were accompanied by a Brass Quintet and by Owen Crawford (HH, 1315) on the stunning College Organ. Many thanks to our OS Choir and Lesson Readers and to all who joined us for this special service. Extra special thanks go to the College Chaplain, Ian Morris; Director of Music, Andrew Bruce; Headmaster, Jeremy Gladwin; Deputy Head, Chris Woodhouse and OS President, Chris Forster (SuH, 82-90). It was a truly memorable occasion.

GEOFFREY TIMM SCULPTURE UNVEILED OS were saddened to hear of Geoffrey Timm’s untimely passing on 19 July 2015. He was Housemaster of Alliott House from 1971 to 1978. A group of AH boys, Matthew Farmer (AH, 70-77), Paul Nightingale (AH, 70-78), Michael Seignior (AH, 72-77), Charles Sherwood (AH, 70-77), Simon Sherwood (AH, 70-78) and Matthew Turner (AH, 70-77) asked one of the UK’s foremost sculptors, John W. Mills, to create a bronze memorial bust in his honour. With the kind permission of the Headmaster this was installed outside Alliott House, as Geoff would have known it, in sight of his study window. For Alliott House boys of that generation, Geoff was an inspiration and a man who reached out to many with kindness, tact and a considerable sense of humour. On Sunday, 11 December 2016, members of Geoff’s family, OS who knew him well and representatives of the College, gathered to attend the unveiling of the sculpture. The chance was taken to share memories of this great man and pay collective respects to Geoff for his immense contribution to Bishop’s Stortford College.

experience or youth and speed prevail?

After much discussion over the past two netball seasons, Louisa Watson, Head of Netball and Jennifer Hanson asked me if I would invite a team of OS to come and play against the College 1st team. Several emails and lots of positive responses later we had a squad of nine. I knew that all of these girls still played competitive netball in some form, either at our local club Crosskeys, where my two daughters and I play; a London club or at University. We all arrived at the Sports Hall, some players meeting for the first time. This did not seem to matter though as everyone was very focused and enthusiastic about playing. With my daughter, Lili playing in the 1st team for the past three years I knew this was a strong and skilled team. Would age and

We played five lots of ten minutes and from the first whistle the pace was fast. The game was evenly matched and both teams battled hard for every minute played. Lots of skill and experience was showcased and there was a healthy competitiveness throughout the match with both teams wanting victory. The shooting displayed was amazing; a special mention to Charlotte B and Katie Chambers (AH, 96-10) for such a high success rate. The defence was tight at both ends causing tireless work for the attack to feed into the circle and in mid court there was some fast and skilful play with many a great interception and turnover. It was great to have so many loyal supporters cheering both sides on and

helping to create a brilliant atmosphere. From their feedback after the game it confirmed it was an excellent, fast-paced game played at a very high standard. Mission accomplished! Experience held us in good stead and OS were victorious with a final score 29-22 with Katie Chambers (AH, 96-10) being crowned OS Player of the Match. After all our hard efforts we enjoyed a drink and some food kindly organised by Jennifer and discussed the game with all who supported us. After such a positive response from OS and a successful evening we will be continuing this event next year. We hope to put out a second team if we have enough players who are interested in playing. Quizmaster, David Hopper (Master, 71-07), did a wonderful job of devising and asking the questions, running a tight schedule throughout the evening. Deep thought was employed, alongside a healthy pinch of guess-work throughout the rounds by the teams. It proved to be a closely-fought competition with Jokers strategically deployed and David reminding the contestants that ‘the Quizmaster is always right’ when light-hearted disputes over answers infrequently arose. Delicious food served during the interval made for a wonderfully sociable evening for all. The ‘Schools Challenge All-Stars’ emerging victorious, building further on successful quiz careers forged at the College (hence their name!), at University and beyond.
