ed note OUR 13TH YEAR OF FAMILY FAVORITES AWARDS Birmingham Parent’s 2019 Family Favorites Awards are BACK! We’ve got some new categories, some surprise winners, and some old favorites. It’s surprising how much some businesses covet the honor. They ask their clients, friends and family to vote, put up signs and request the votes on the web and social media. Last year we had a record number of votes, and this year we even surpassed that! This tells you how much your opinion matters, and how important you are to the businesses and services that you use. This contest is all about you and what your favorites are. Unlike other contests, we don’t nominate anyone. The contest is completely reader driven, and whoever wins, wins. And many of these categories are so very close. Keep this guide all year and use it when you need to make a decision about a purchase, doctor, trip, or whatever your family needs help with. (And don’t miss voting in our Favorite Kids Docs, online now at www.birminghamparent.com. Nominees will be highlighted in December 2019). Just like the last few years, we’ve organized the Family Favorites winners in categories to make reading easier, and you can access the digital edition of this guide all year at www.birminghamparent. com. The next voting will begin in January 2020, so tell your clients, family and friends! ALSO in this issue is our third annual Little Learners Preschool Guide. Don’t miss getting some advice from the experts on what to ask when looking for the right preschool for your child. And be sure to save the date for our Happy Healthy Kids Fair at the Riverchase Galleria on Aug. 24, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. We’ll have local entertainment, swag bags, great prizes, vendors with great products and services, and many surprises.

PAR E N TI N G

Parenting with Dr. Friedman

Q:

I had offered to chaperone band camp for my 16-year-old son but he does not want me to go. I believe that he fears that I will embarrass him in front of his friends. It is not that

I do anything specific that embarrasses him. He just doesn’t want to be seen with his mother. I see many parents who are too busy to do things like this with and for their children. I feel that it is important to be involved. I was planning to go without his blessing. Am I wrong to go on this fourday overnight trip with the group despite his protest?

From the child’s perspective, the time to chaperone field trips is when they are young. In the elementary school, nearly all children feel proud and secure when a parent accompanies a school trip. Of course, there are a few parents whose behavior is so atypical that even a young child is embarrassed. Many, probably even the majority, of adolescents still enjoy having an involved parent but most can do just as well on their own during a chaperoned school trip. At this point in development, the reason for a parent to go on a school trip is to provide service to the teachers. Getting to know the curriculum, the other band parents and your child’s friends are other advantages. No matter how old your child is, it cannot hurt to know with whom he hangs out and what type of families his friends come from. Of course, there are some well-behaved children who come from dysfunctional homes. A few parents are truly embarrassing to their children. Parents who dress in gaudy or unfashionable clothing, who talk too loudly or discuss embarrassing topics, who open the door for the teen’s friends dressed in underwear (yes, there are parents who do this), or who try to dress seductively like their teen, cause their children to put distance between them. Be sensitive to your son’s legitimate concerns and try to avoid direct humiliation for him.

I had offered to chaperone band camp for my 16-year-old son but he does not want me to go. I believe that he fears that I will embarrass him in front of his friends... I don’t think it is wrong to override your son’s wishes about chaperoning. Many teens who are concerned about the idea of a parent coming along later appreciate that they did. As long as you behave as the other parents do, your son should not feel discomfort. You might find a balance between staying all four days and not going at all. Many long trips are chaperoned by parents in shifts, as few parents can take the whole time off from work. Going for two days would give

your son some independence, but it would still allow you to show your support for the program and get to know the staff and students. While at camp, don’t hover over your son. Remember that your mission is to support the teachers and not to make sure your son eats his vegetables. Of course, if his behavior is truly problematic, then he should suffer the consequences of your knowing what he has done. Except in the case of his direct misbehavior, giving general directions to the group, such as, “It’s

time for showers now,” might be better than singling out your son either in private or in front of his friends. Supervising a cabin other than the one where your son stays might make him more comfortable.

‘Champions for Children’ Breakfast Creates Brighter Futures for Children Childcare Resources Inspirational Fundraiser Helps Support Future Workforce Nearly 300 business professionals and community members came together last month for the second annual Champions for Children Charity Breakfast, an inspirational fundraiser hosted by Childcare Resources. Childcare Resources is a non-profit organization in Birmingham that makes quality child care happen by providing information, education, and assistance to families, providers of child care, and the community. “Every donation to Childcare Resources, regardless of the amount, helps to create a two-generation impact,” says Joan Wright, executive director. “The support we receive through the Champions for Children Charity Breakfast allows us to further enhance our programs, like our Supplemental Child Care Program, which not only enables working families to remain employed, improve their economic condition, and make a quality choice for early education, but also extends benefits to the family, children, and employers.” The breakfast generated more than $90,000 in one-time gifts and multi-year pledges during the one-hour event, with an additional $7,500 of in-kind support to help further the agency’s mission. To contribute to the mission of Childcare Resources, visit www.ccr-bhm.org or call 205-945-0018, x 306.

The ABCs of Safe Sleep Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the number one cause of death in babies under 12 months. SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of a baby, and often occurs during sleep. SIDS is very frightening for new parents, but there are things to do to help keep your baby safe and help prevent SIDS. Dr. Candice Dye, associate professor of pediatrics at Children’s of Alabama and UAB, advises parents and caregivers of babies should remember the ABCs of sleep. “Alone, on their back, in a crib. It’s that simple,” Dye says. The ABCs of safe sleep for babies are: ALONE: “Items in the crib pose a huge suffocation risk,” she says. “No bumper pads, no stuffed animals, no loose blankets. Nothing else in the crib. A boring crib equals a healthy baby.” On their BACK: “This is different from when our grandparents or parents were doing this, but babies should be laid down on their back,” Dye explains. “This ensures that the baby can breathe and they are not getting trapped face down unable to breathe.” In their CRIB: “It’s really easy for parents to be tired and want to keep the baby in their bed with them, but an adult mattress is not the same as an infant crib mattress and there is the risk of the adult rolling onto the baby while sleeping,” she says. Dye also cautions parents not to rely on store-bought devices or gadgets that may claim to help prevent SIDS. Courtesy of Children’s of Alabama 8 | birminghamparent | JULY 2019

Did you know you can sponsor a baby's diaper need for as low as $10/month? Teaching Science Fundamentals While Having Summer Fun Studies show that summer learning loss is real and evident in children. And many parents struggle with how to engage their kids while still making learning fun. Try these two fun experiments this summer with your kids: Can glue bounce? Fun with glue and borax The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate the difference between a chemical change and physical change. In conducting this experiment, children will see how physical changes are made when combining the two mixtures to create “flubber.” Chemical changes are shown through the use of heat in the form of a microwave. You will need: water, Borax soap, microwave, glue, two beakers, stirring rod, food coloring and gloves. What to do: Put 1.5 inches of water in container A. Add one teaspoon of Borax soap to container A. Heat the mixture in the microwave for one minute and set aside. Be careful as the mixture will be hot. Put 1.5 inches of glue in container B. Add six teaspoons of water to container B. Add 12 drops of food coloring to container B. Add the contents of container A to the mixture in container B. Stir well. The combination makes “flubber.” Can colors run? Fun with soap and colors The objective of this experiment is to get students thinking about what happens when things are pulled apart chemically. Milk has fat molecules that are nonpolar hydrophobic or “water hating.” When soap is added, this disturbs the nonpolar fat molecules and we see the colors “run.” You will need: six paper plates, 1 percent milk, 2 percent milk, half and half, buttermilk, whole milk, glue, food coloring (green, blue, red and yellow), liquid dish washing detergent, Q-tips. What to do: Lay paper plates out into a straight line, one plate for each type of milk and glue. Pour various milks into the plates, enough to cover the bottom of each. Drop three or four drops of different food colorings into the center of the milk. Be careful not to mix the colors. Dip a Q-tip into the liquid dishwashing detergent and place it in the center of the food coloring drops. Watch and discuss what happens as each plate transitions to a beautiful piece of art. Announcing the Birmingham Parent 2019 Family Favorites Award Winners Compiled by Carol Muse Evans

We all have our favorites — favorite ice cream shop, favorite grocery store, place to get your haircut, favorite places to shop and bank and even vacation. But sometimes we reply on friends and family to give us other suggestions about what they know to be good and what THEIR favorites are. You may be introduced to a favorite by word of mouth, or see an ad for a spot, go there and then share with all your friends how great it is. This is what the Birmingham Parent Family Favorites Awards is all about. The longest running contest of its sort in the Birmingham area, we do it totally with you and for you. You nominate and choose the winners. And we’ve got a few new categories this year! It’s an open forum — you did the nominating and the voting. Votes must be cast in 20 categories per voter in order to qualify, as well as to qualify for the drawing for the grand prize. We’ve tallied the numbers and following are the results. There are some surprise winners this year, and many categories were super close! We’ve also grouped the winners into easy categories for you. We hope you will keep this list all year for great things to do and places to go in Birmingham, and if you have a favorite that didn’t make the list this year, be sure to vote for them in 2020! You can easily access this list all year at www.birminghamparent.com. Be sure you tell the winners that you read about them in Birmingham Parent! And congrats to our giveaway prize winner, Danielle Hinson of Calera, who won a terrific trip for 4 to OWA, our travel sponsor. AND THE 2019 WINNERS ARE….

Odyssey was created by educators who dreamed of opening an early learning center where children could be nurtured and taught by a highly trained and loving staff. That dream was realized when our Inverness school opened in 1995, and then again in 2001, with the opening of our second school in Trace Crossings. Odyssey’s goal is to create a life-long love of learning. We have developed our own age-appropriate curriculum, specifically

designed to introduce each age grouping to language, reading, math, science and more, so that your child will possess a strong foundation for Kindergarten and beyond. Additionally, we guarantee teachers with four-year education degrees in all preschool classrooms and offer exceptional child-to-teacher ratios. At our schools, you can watch your child’s entire day in live, streaming, HD video over the Internet, through an individual,

secure connection linked directly to your child’s classroom. We want our parents to know what happens during their child’s day, and Odyssey is the only Over-the-Mountain daycare to offer this service. WINNER CHICK-FIL-A For over 70 years, Chick-fil-A has built a foundational commitment to service – service to our customers, our franchised Restaurant Operators and Team Members, and to our communities. We are committed to taking care of the people who take care of our communities. Questions to Ask/Consider When Searching for a

PRESCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILD By Carol Muse Evans

Preschool is often a child’s first time to be away from Mom or Dad for part or all of a day. Parents need peace of mind when they leave their children. When looking for the right place for your child to feel safe, thrive, learn and grow, what should you be asking during the search and interview process? Better yet, what should you see to make your decision?

WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR? Sonya Prater, executive director of Woodland Park Christian Learning Center, says the caregivers are very important people in the life of your child. They need to have your child’s best interest at heart at all times, so look for the interactions between the teachers and children. “Can you see evidence of a loving bond between children and the teacher?” Prater says. Bob Mitchell, president of Odyssey Early Schools, explains that at minimum parents searching for quality childcare programs should look for five critical elements: stability in management, consistency of staff, child-to-teacher ratios, quality of curriculum and state licensing or certification, which protects parents by ensuring third-party oversight of the program so that minimum standards are guaranteed. “I wouldn’t enroll my child in any program in which I wasn’t totally comfortable in meeting all of those criteria,” Mitchell says. Katie Kuehner, area director of School for Amazing Kids, says parents should look for a school that focuses on preparing your child for kindergarten, that loves and cares for children and nurtures their curiosity, DHR licensed so that they are required to meet all ratio and cleanliness standards, and a school that takes care of their teachers and serves the families who attend. “The right facility and program is always one that will nurture your child’s curiosity and provide loving care,” Kuehner adds. “Multimillion dollar facilities can look incredible and impressive but none of that matters if they don’t have the right programming and the right people in leadership.” “It’s extremely important that the program exceeds the safety and health standards of DHR and that they are licensed through this organization,” echoes Michele Wilensky, Head of School, Hilltop Montessori School. “In addition to this, parents should make sure the program is accredited by a nationally recognized organization and that all instructors are certified teachers, with experience in early childhood development and significant classroom experience.” While Wilensky echoes the others about student/teacher relationships, she also suggestions a bonus would be a daily foreign language immersion program, music, arts and a heavy emphasis on reading and math skills. “Low teacher-student ratios are important but also that the children are given opportunities for independence to develop the ‘I can do it myself’ mindset.” She also suggests parents should be wary of too much emphasis on technology or programs that allow children unrestricted technology access. “Learning should be hands-on and outdoor play areas that are well-stocked and inviting are a must.” “Most of all, parents should look for a preschool environment that is inviting and the staff are happy, genuine and engaging. The preschool should also meet the parents’ expected safety and cleanliness standards as well as be a program that aligns with the needs of the child,” says Tracy LaBreche of Ardent Preschool and Daycare (formerly Covenant Classical School). HOW OLD? “I don’t know if there is an ‘ideal’ age,” Mitchell says. “I believe that, given a curriculum focused on learning through engagement and play that’s guided by effective teachers, children can benefit from being in a childcare program throughout our entire age range. Even our youngest infant programs have a curriculum following those principles.” All that said, Mitchell says a child should at least be in a structured program, at least on a part-time basis, at least a year or two before entering kindergarten. Prater believes the “ideal age” depends on a family’s needs. “All families are different. Some may need something at 6 weeks, while others need something around age 3. Always consider what works for your family.” Some preschools, like School for Amazing Kids, serve all ages. “We serve all ages, even up to 12, for our summer program and before and after school program,” Kuehner says. “We recognize that many families have two parents that have to have full-time jobs, and our focus has been on providing excellent care for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years for over 35 years.” For Wilensky, she says the idea age to start is 18 months, as children will begin to understand social relationships, develop friendships and can actively concentrate and “learn” in a school setting. “The average cost of a good early childhood program are usually more expensive, but parents that are more concerned with cost can

take advantage of half-day programs to make the experience more affordable.” At Ardent, LaBreche says the ideal age depends on the child, but they have found that children who enter into their program at 3 to 4 years of age become acclimated fairly quickly. IS TECHNOLOGY IMPORTANT? Some schools have video in the classrooms or cameras around the perimeter. But not all. Wilensky says to be wary of a school where parents are not welcome. “We have an open observation policy,” she explains. “Early childhood education is a partnership between home, school and child, and with younger students, parents should feel involved and welcome.” Prater echoes the “open door” policy for parents to visit. Some provide photos and reports throughout the day, like School for Amazing Kids, Kuehner says. This school does it through a special app. At Ardent, the cameras are in the classrooms for the staff’s own accountability, LaBreche says. “Our parents are always welcome to view live video on our lobby TVs or recorded video if they have a concern,” she explains. Some schools, such as Odyssey Early Schools, offer Internet video monitoring. Odyssey began this in 1996, Mitchell says, and was one of the first schools in the nation to do so. “We want our parents to be connected to their child and to all classroom activities, and we believe that this service provides our parents with a peace of mind that things are going the way they are promised in our classrooms,” Mitchell adds. HOW TO CHOOSE? When it all comes down to it, the experts say you have to do your homework, research and weigh your needs/your child’s needs and what the school has to offer, along with cost. Talk to friends, relatives and neighbors, and eventually, it will come down to your gut. Not every school is right for every child, but with a little research, you’ll know the school that is right for you and your child. Carol Evans is publisher of Birmingham Parent.

STEM FOR PRESCHOOLERS: Activities to Try at Home By Sarah Lyons

Do your children have an interest in figuring out how things work? Do they enjoy experimenting with their surroundings? You may have a budding engineer, astronaut, mathematician or scientist on your hands. Even kids who are not naturally drawn to all things math and science enjoy exploring their environment and figuring out how they work. STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, are activities that engage kids of all ages in these specific areas. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, STEM occupations are growing 17 percent per year and STEM degree holders have a higher income. While a career in the STEM field may seem like a long time off for your preschooler, STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables innovation of new products in the future. Most would agree that jobs of the future will require a basic understanding of math, science, and technology and it is never too early to start developing your child’s interest in these areas (www.engineeringforkids.com). While many schools are developing STEM curriculums for classrooms, there are plenty of things you can do at home to kick-start your preschoolers love of science. STEM in the Kitchen Your school teachers were right; you do use math and science in everyday life. You may already love cooking with your kids, but consider incorporating a science and math lesson at the same time. While baking cookies have your children help measure the ingredients, count the scoops of flour, talk about what happens if you do not use the correct measurements, and discuss what the purpose of baking powder and baking soda is. (It leavens the batter to rise while baking.) Make the experience fun and educational at the same time. Your child may not even notice they are learning about math and science while baking and sampling tasty treats. DIY Science Lab Create your own science lab mixing station at home. All you need is several plastic or glass containers (see through are best) of any shape and size. Fill containers with dry ingredients such as baking soda, baking powder, salt, sugar, 34 | birminghamparent | JULY 2019

and cornstarch. Fill additional containers with wet ingredients such as water, white vinegar, lemon juice, and ice. It may be wise to lay towels underneath your mixing station or set the ingredients up outside so you can have fun without worrying about the difficulty of clean up. Once your science lab is set up, it’s time to get creative. Let your kids experiment with what happens when different ingredients are mixed. This activity is great for preschoolers but can also be adopted to older children by providing them with a journal to record the results of each combination of ingredients when they are mixed. Use What You Have Set up a sensory bin using dried beans, water beads, or rice as a filler then hide items inside. Ask your child to find the red dinosaur, count the green items, or close their eyes and guess what items they feel. Encourage your little engineer or architect to build a tower using toothpicks and marshmallows or fill a tray with shaving cream and blocks and ask if they think the shaving

cream will help their blocks stick together. Sharpen their math skills with colored cereal like Fruit Loops. Ask your child to sort the pieces by color and count them. Then have them string the cereal on yarn to make a necklace. Make it fun and see what potential STEM activities you have laying around the house. Preschoolers love to explore with their hands and all of their senses which makes the possibilities endless. Plant a garden, fill water glasses with food coloring and mix to learn about colors, count and sort items throughout the day, talk about and chart the weather, or play with magnets and a cookie sheet. STEM is all around us just waiting to be explored.

ASK T HE SPE C I ALI ST

Planning Your Pregnancy By Dr. Sarah Jaber

Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu once said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Pregnancy is like a journey, which actually starts before a woman becomes pregnant. Women who plan on having a baby can take steps to help ensure that they have a healthy pregnancy so their baby can have a healthy start in life. Here are five steps to help your little one start off on the right foot.

STEP 1. To help reduce the risk of some birth defects, begin taking 400 micrograms (400 mcg or .4 mg) of folic acid every day for at least one month before and during pregnancy. Higher doses of folic acid may be needed based on certain medical conditions or if you have carried a prior baby with a spinal tube defect. Ask your doctor about the dose needed. Also start prenatal vitamins – most PNV contain the standard dose of 400 mcg of folic acid. STEP 2. Have a medical checkup before pregnancy. Preconception care, which is medical care you receive before you are pregnant, can help evaluate your health and identify lifestyle risks that could affect you and your baby. STEP 3. Be at a healthy weight before you get pregnant. Being underweight can cause problems getting pregnant and could increase the possibility of having a baby with a low birth weight. A woman who is obese has a higher risk of complications during pregnancy. STEP 4. Stop smoking and drinking alcohol. Smoking and drinking alcohol can make it more difficult to get pregnant. Smoking during pregnancy can also increase the risk of complications and sudden infant death syndrome. Drinking alcohol while pregnant can cause lifelong problems for a baby including heart defects and fetal alcohol syndrome. STEP 5. Talk to your doctor about all medicines you are currently taking. This includes over-the-counter or prescription medications, herbal supplements and dietary products. Some may not be safe to take while pregnant. By putting your best foot forward and planning for your pregnancy, you can help prevent problems that might affect you and your baby. For more information about preconception planning, talk with your doctor or call us at Shelby OBGYN at 205.664.9995.

Salute to Those Who Work with Special Needs Children By Melanie B. Holliman, Estate Planning & Special Needs Attorney, Executive Director of Alabama Family Trust

Disabilities such as seizures, deafness, mobility issues, and autism require a child’s life and education to be customized, and a support network is critical. Every child has unique interests and capabilities, and all of those who work with special needs children deserve stars in their crowns for encouraging their development and independence. Family A disabled family member requires the whole family grow new capabilities. A parent often supplements other educational opportunities with dedicated one-on-one help, or a parent may become a home-school teacher. Siblings become special playmates, intuitively understanding a disabled sibling’s interests. Grandparents, aunts, and uncles can provide opportunities such as field trips to botanical gardens and playgrounds designed for disabled children and young adults. Private Tutors One private tutor began working with a deaf child when he was only two, teaching him Signing Exact English. The tutor went to school with him and basically home-schooled him in English

and math and accompanied him to history and science classes. That child who is now getting ready for high school considers his private tutor for the past 12 years as a second mother. School Teachers and Aides These teachers bring something special for special needs children with their in-depth knowledge of the children’s capabilities and interests. They teach life skills using math, English, and reading that help them live as independently as possible. More importantly, they often discover talents such as the child who always drew on his schoolwork who now illustrates and publishes comic books with his brother, and the child who tapped on everything who became a walk-on drummer with the renown Alabama A&M Band. High-functioning disabled children with aides who accompany them to classes get more from the classes and build lives as rich as possible. Caregivers Caregivers often expand disabled children’s horizons in very creative ways. One caregiver took a deaf child to see the Ivy Green, Helen

Keller’s birthplace and museum in Tuscumbia. The Birmingham Museum of Art and the Huntsville Museum of Art both offer special tours that can spark the imagination of blind or low vision children. Now that summer is here, live concerts outdoors offer rich experiences for many disabled children. Alabama Family Trust works with the families of many disabled children and seniors on the financial side and salutes the rest of the teams who work to enhance the children’s lives. Thanks for your dedication, creativity, and sometimes... patience! Melanie B. Child Visitors: What Is a Dog to Do? By Rebecca Mason, CPDT-KA, CTDI, M.Ed.

It’s summer, and that means cookouts, block parties, and all the kids in the neighborhood coming over to play. You and your kids may think this is great, but your dog may not. How will you know? It’s important to learn to identify early signs that your dog is stressed, and advocate for them by removing them from the situation before things escalate. Early signs of stress include things most people wouldn’t think of, including yawning, licking their lips, turning their face or body away from stressors, panting, or cowering. Even before these things occur, some owners will notice a worried or tense look on their dog’s face, with a furrowed brow. The dog’s body will go from loose and wiggly to still and stiff. If you have kids coming over to the house, it’s especially important to recognize these signs in order to keep everyone safe – both your kids and your dog! Don’t just tell your kids and their friends what to do and what not to do around your dog, get them to brainstorm together! What things might frighten a dog? If they come up with the ideas on their own, they are more likely to retain the information. Recently at one of my kids clinics, I had the students, ages 5-9, brainstorm things kids shouldn’t do around dogs. The list includes: slapping, wrestling, screaming, sudden movements, throwing, lying on the dog, riding the dog, getting in his face, stomping and

growling. I was really pleased with the things they came up with. A week or so later, I overheard my own son – who had participated in the clinic – tell one of his friends that they should be quieter around their dog because loud sounds can be frightening. Proud mom moment right there! Aside from teaching children what not to do around dogs, we need to teach them what TO do! This includes teaching your kids how to read body language (see www.doggonesafe.com and www. gooddoginabox.com for help, or join us for one of our kids clinics). It also includes teaching them ways that most dogs enjoy being petted. Like I said in a previous article, teach your kids “1, 2, 3, and see.” If the dog chooses to come to them on his own, they can pet him under the chest or on the side of the neck for up to three seconds. If the dog backs away or shows any of the stress signals mentioned earlier, he doesn’t want to be petted. If he leans into the petting, smiles, and has a loose, happy body, he probably enjoys it! Not only is there a right way to pet, there’s also a right time. When a dog is hyped up, hasn’t had his daily walk yet, or is being mouthy, that’s not a good time for petting. A dog who is overstimulated will often put his mouth on someone who tries to interact with him. Teach kids to wait until your dog is relaxed and exercised, or even a little tired, to pet him. That being said, no one should

RECOMMENDING THE BEST BOOKS FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS By Gerry P. Smith

Busy Before Bedtime Bedtime for kids isn’t a simple exercise. There are a whole host of preparations and rituals that mark a child’s transition from active day toward the peace of sleep. With their surplus of energy, the run-up to bedtime is also important guidance for their close-of-day wind down. Bathing, toothbrushing, finding pajamas, and bedtime stories become worthy habits that stay with into adulthood. And even though these behaviors are designed to point us toward our beds and relaxation, it›s still a lot of activity to navigate. The following titles celebrate the bedtime hustle and bustle that none-theless moves us closer to the peace of sleep.

By Heidi Bee Roemer, Illustrated by Mike Wohnoutka (Henry Holt & Company / Macmillan)

Stop That Yawn!!

By Caron Levis, Illustrated by LeUyen Pham (Atheneum / Simon & Schuster)

Gabby Wild has had enough of boring bedtime and thinks the whole thing’s a big snore. Enlisting the help of her Granny to escape the tedium of sleep, they both ditch pajamas and pillows to visit a wonderland of wakefulness. Their destination, ‘Never Sleeping City,’ is populated with all-night carnivals, midnight marching bands, and a whole community of wide-awake inhabitants. But as the activity takes its toll, Granny’s jaws begin to stretch in the ultimate signal for sleep. Trying to suppress the contagion of a yawn, Gabby and Granny race from venue to venue, in an effort to stop the spreading drowsiness. But the yawn will not be stopped until it finds a place to rest. LeUyen Pham’s gift for expressive illustration shines through a journey that will carry a wakeful reader toward their ultimate destination of irresistible sleep. 40 | birminghamparent | JULY 2019

Dinner is finished and it’s time to clean up and get ready for bed. And while sleeping is easy, there’s still a lot to do before heads hit the pillow. There are clothes to come off, baths to enjoy, pajamas to don, and books to read together. With softly colored central images that fade at the edges, every cheery vignette presents a warmly fuzzy feature of bedtime preparations for a toddler. Each stage of the journey to bed is paired with a rhyming couplet that mirrors the singsong voices of parents charming their child toward sleep. Ideal for introducing and celebrating traditional get-ready-for-bed routines, Peekity Boo What You Can Do! is the perfect primer for a baby’s journey to dream time.

Good Night, Mr. Panda

By Steve Antony (Scholastic Press)

As the unflappable Mr. Panda is getting ready for bed, he’s visited by a changing parade of friends coming to say goodnight. Committed to his own nightly routines, Mr. Panda points out to each friend something they are forgetting to do before bed. But his friends have their own rejoinders. Skunk only takes a bath once a month, Sheep don’t wear pajamas and Sloth is just too tired to make it to a bed. While no one is taking Mr. Panda’s advice, there’s one friend in the wings who enthusiastically follows his every recommendation for bedtime readiness. From the somber expressions that define Mr. Panda to the energetic interjections of his friend, Lemur, this title is perfect for read-aloud partners who revel in voicing a diverse cast of characters.
