IN THE GARDEN “Tips to keep your garden beautiful” Is winter a good time of year to do the garden? So long as below zero temperatures and lots of snow for days at a time isn’t forecast – unlikely – there’s not a lot that can’t be done. Sad looking lawns still seem to be a criticism many people have of their own gardens. Apart from the condition of the lawn - weed content, moss, bare patches etc. - the main problem is lack of definition between lawn and beds. Grass spreads by creeping, so putting a barrier, or decorative edge around it will provide that definition all year. A bit of TLC for your lawn over autumn is a good idea. A quick rake over to get out the dead grass; spike it all over with a fork and then brush in some top dressing. This is also a good way of tackling small dips in the lawn. Try re-seeding bare areas too. If you have lots of shade in the garden, often created by your own or neighbours’ large shrubs and trees, either try some specialist lawn seed for shady areas or re-think that bit of the garden – if you have a permanent mud patch, then maybe it’s time for “plan B”... As living things, plants have a limited life span too. Many so-called problem plants that people point out to me in their gardens are simply plants that are past their best or are in the wrong place. A sunny border 10 years ago when planted might now be quite dark with large shrubs and trees casting lots of shade. Careful pruning of shrubs and trees can make a big difference. Crown lifting and thinning is worth considering for plants that you can’t part with. Now go forward my green-fingered friends, and conquer winter like you’ve never conquered it before!

BASIC LIFE CHARITY “A regular update from this brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support” Bishop Mike with members of the team at St.Edmund’s

As a New Year beckons, maybe it’s a good time to reflect on all that happened in 2016 while anticipating some exciting events to come. In the last year BASIC have been involved in many aspects of community life around Felixstowe and Walton. Of course, our major project has been our unique method of food redistribution locally. Our idea of a ‘Community Pop-Up Shop’ has gained the attention of local media such as BBC Radio and ITV News.

BASIC have been pleased to sponsor the entire cost of Andrew’s appearance and we know the Felixstowe people will offer their warmest encouragement. It’s not often we have an Olympic athlete from our town! Finally, can we say a massive ‘Thank You’ to all those lovely people who donated items for our Christmas sacks and shoe boxes.

We’ve received enquiries from all over the country and it was wonderful to welcome Bishop Mike Harrison during November. The Bishop was more than impressed with the simple yet extremely effective system and said he would ‘be delighted if the model was adopted throughout the churches in the East of England’. Of course, the idea isn’t limited to churches and we would welcome enquiries from any group who wish to open their own ‘Pop-Up’. During November we opened at St.Philips in Wadgate Road and already the feedback has been extremely positive. Looking forward to 2017 we are excited about local Downs Syndrome man Andrew Brooks, who is the only Felixstowe athlete to have been selected for the Special Olympics which will be held in Sheffield in the summer. He has been selected for three events – Discus, Shot-Put and Javelin. 8

At the time of writing they are all ready to be packed – but by now they will have been delivered to people who will be really delighted. Wishing you all a wonderful November.

NOVEMBER’S FOOD

WARMING AUTUMNAL APPLE CRUMBLE

Method

“Celebrating our many cultural delights with what we love best... food!” Let’s face it - November is the time when comfort foods really become necessary. Thanks to the unseasonably wet and warm Autumn, the last fall of cooking apples has been a little later than expected so this takes advantage of using them up too! Ingredients 5 large or 7 medium cooking apples (depending on the size of your dish) 350g spelt flour (or wholemeal flour) 200g softened butter 100g honey (or agave syrup) 1 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp nutmeg

16

Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 5/200C/180C Fan Peel, core and chop the apples into small cubes. Place these in a pan of water as you chop so that they don’t spoil. Bring the pan of water to the boil and allow the apples to simmer until they are just soft enough to skewer with a fork. No more than 4 minutes should be sufficient. If you aren’t ready to make your crumble yet you can freeze the cooked apples for up to a month for this recipe, just add an extra 15 minutes to your cooking time and place lower in the oven to ensure the top doesn’t burn! Whilst the apples are cooking place the butter and half of the flour in a mixing bowl and combine with a wooden spoon. Add the honey, nutmeg and half of the cinnamon. Now comes the messy part - a perfect opportunity to get the kids involved. Add the flour gradually to the rest of the mixture and, with clean hands, roughly

BEST BITES 1

mix together. The idea is to have the mixture in small, coarse pieces rather than a perfect doughy ball which you should have by the end of adding all the flour. Drain the now cooked apples and place into a deep oven dish or greased baking tray. Sprinkle over the remainder of the cinnamon and with a large spoon or hands add the crumble mixture to the top, making sure that the apples are well covered. Place in the oven for 20 minutes. The top of the crumble should be a little hard and slightly browned. Serve with cream, Greek yogurt or your favourite ice cream or enjoy with a cup of tea! Yum!

FEIXSTOWE TOWN AND AROUND Another month has passed and now that October is here so are the darker nights and mornings! I was lucky enough to have been invited to the official opening of the Pier. Masses of people attended and the weather was lovely. Stan Threadwell made a great speech prior to asking his mother to cut the ribbon to officially open the new building. The Pier has thus far proven to be a great attraction which I am sure will continue. We were all able to play the machines as 2p pieces had been provided for anyone who wished to play. Needless to say I was one of those who had great fun trying to dislodge the pile of pennies that had built up – but never fell! Congratulations to everyone involved with the Pier project and thank you for a lovely venue for the Town. A planning application has been received by the District Council on the old Cavendish site. Part of this site had already been identified as being suitable for housing development so the application comes as no surprise. It will come before the Town Council during October and from the notices posted around the site the application is for 48 flats with commercial use on the ground floor and 11 houses. I hear that the proposal includes 6 storey buildings – it will be interesting to see the plans and designs and how these fit into the landscape. The Sunday market use on this site will, of course, cease but I am sure a new venue can be found for those stall holders who use the present area. The market stalls in Mannings will, of course, continue (and maybe some new ones) and any thought that this will change is incorrect. It also means that The Lions will have to find a new home for the summer Car Boot sale and I hope they can do so, as this adds something else for people to do during the summer months. 24

“Update from Felixstowe’s town councillor” The consultation on the proposals for Felixstowe and the District under the new Local Plan during September was well attended and I am sure the feed back from those who attended will help formulate the final document that plans the future of the District up until 2036. The new plan will deal with housing, employment, infrastructure, retail and leisure, tourism, parking, community facilities and climate change and the effects on our coastal communities. Felixstowe Town Council is preparing a response to the consultation and have had two intensive workshops with members to discuss all the questions in the consultation – 144 in total! This is an important document and there is an online consultation too. Still no indication of whether or not any action will be taken to challenge the Secretary of State’s decision to allow development on the Candlet/Gulpher land. I am sensing a reluctant view that there is little that can be done to try and overturn this decision! Finally, well done to everyone who took part in Felixstowe in Flower this year! The prize winners in the various categories for Felixstowe in Flower attended a wonderful evening at Felixstowe Academy to receive their awards and as always it was a joyous occasion that included all age ranges from nursery children to senior citizens! Doreen Savage.

BOOK REVIEW “Local bookworm gives his take on the latest novels” The hero who took over the mantle of Indiana Jones in making history sexy (although think crumpled suits and mid-life paunch rather than leather jacket and bullwhip) is back in his fifth globetrotting adventure from author Dan Brown; Origin Many of us have been thrilled by Harvard professor Robert Langdon since his first appearance in 2003’s multi-million selling ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and by his big screen outings where he has been portrayed by Tom Hanks. Origin see’s our hero in Spain rushing between many well known landmarks (the Guggenhein Museum, Sagrada Familia etc.) making this book, just like previous tomes, part adventure/part ‘Lonely Planet’ guide. Whereas Indiana Jones would be searching for a religious and historical Macguffin, Robert Langdon is once again solving mysteries with his intricate knowledge of religious symbology and numerology. This time around the premise is based around the assassination of a technology super-genius who is planning to reveal the secrets of the universe which will change the way we look at the world forever. Langdon must first though crack the password on the poor expired genius’ PowerPoint presentation, which of course is hampered by various ne’redo-wells looking to stop this unveiling of the universe’s secrets. Fans of Brown’s previous works will not be disappointed with this latest

book. You can tick off the boxes of the check-list which have made these books so hugely popular. As well as the aforementioned exotic locations, there are the usual Crystal Maze style puzzles that Langdon must solve, frantic pursuits with villains, a possible history changing plot-line and a beautiful female companion. These books are never going to win any high brow literature awards, but then that’s not the point of them, and Bown’s writing style is not offensive. So if you’re looking for a fun, rollicking good adventure yarn then you can’t really go wrong with this, or any of the previous in the series. If, however, you can’t commit the time to read Origin, then the inevitable 2 hour film version will be along before we know it. Origin is out now published by Bantam priced at £20. Neil Cameron 27

FELIXSTOWE RADIO Felixstowe recently celebrated its place in radio history. In September a marker commemorating Radio Caroline was unveiled at the top of Convalescent Hill. Radio Caroline was of course the pirate radio ship which helped revolutionise modern radio stations, and was moored just off of our coastline. Radio also still plays a major part in the present day here in Felixstowe as the town is lucky enough to have its very own community radio station; Felixstowe Radio. Broadcasting 24/7, the station has been in operation since 2009 and is run purely by a group of volunteers. We have a wide range of programmes with knowledgeable presenters who play music from all eras and genres. So as well as hearing the current hits of today and yesteryear, you’ll also hear specialist programmes dedicated to folk, film, rock, soul and everything in-between. Featured here are just a few of our presenters that’ll you get to hear on Felixstowe Radio.
As we’re a station for the local community we feature local artists and bands and advertise news of local events, clubs and groups – so it’s a great way to keep up to date with what’s happening in our town.

So why not tune in and give us a listen. We’re available on 107.5fm or online at: www.felixstoweradio.org.uk and if you’d like to get involved with the station then drop us a line at info@felixstoweradio.org.uk.

MIND AND MATTER “Taking care of you” Ever wondered when you’re sick why you feel better when you’re snuggled up with a loved one on the sofa in a soft cosy blanket? You might just put it down to the placebo effect as I would have until I learnt last month that there’s much more to it than pure psychology. Although a new area of research and the exact science of what’s going on is unclear, studies have shown that environment, emotions and touch not only make us feel better in disposition but that on a biological level they boost our immune system. Experiments done with mice showed that the mice kept in more stimulating and enriching environments had improved immune systems. There is also evidence that human touch

and the feel of softer fabrics increases the number of healthy immune markers. The link between our mental, emotional and physical states has also been highlighted by observations of poor mental health that accompanies certain conditions such as multiple sclerosis. So you would think this is to be expected, right? MS is not a pleasant condition and would affect anyone’s mental state. But when examining mice with MS, the same biomarker responsible for the autoimmunity of MS was also seen to cause depression and anxiety. This just scratches the surface of a whole new line of research into the relationship between body and mind. Staying healthy is as much about a happy and comfortable environment as it is about medication. Want to find out more, go to www.affectiveimmunology.com.

FUN RUN RESULTS This year’s Martlesham Heath 10k, 5k and Fun Run exceeded all expectations, with a record 500 entries in the 10k and strong fields in the other events. This year, for the first time, the 10k was part of the Suffolk Athletic Grand Prix; runners gain points from eight nominated events at various distances, culminating in awards for the best runners in a range of categories and for the best overall running club. Holding a race around the roads and footpaths of Martlesham Heath in the early Autumn brings unexpected problems in the form of horse chestnuts, sweet chestnuts and acorns. Spread abundantly along the paths they presented a real hazard for runners. So early that Sunday morning a small army of Lions was out, armed with rakes and brooms, sweeping the course clear - all part of the fun. News that the 10k was fully booked with a record entry wasn’t greeted with quite the same enthusiasm by everyone. Pat Carter, organising the kitchen, gasped “We’ll never have enough cakes!” and spent two further days baking. Happily, her efforts paid off and there were enough of those renowned cakes for everyone. Runners, marshals, spectators and officials all said how much they had enjoyed the well-organised event and the friendly atmosphere. Our thanks to Felixstowe Road Running Club and especially to Rachael Miller, Race Director, for their handling of 34

“500 participants of this fantastic event” the online booking, timekeeping and all the technical aspects of the race. As usual at this time of year our fundraising turns towards the annual Christmas Parcels project. Many recipients in the past have commented that knowing someone had thought of them was even more important than the parcels themselves. With this and the recent successful launch of Quay Time in mind, we are shifting the focus of the Christmas Parcels and will work in partnership with the Woodbridge branch of the Salvation Army, offering packages of seasonal groceries to users of the food bank scheme. All former recipients of Christmas parcels will be invited to come along to Quay Time, a joint project with Woodbridge Quay Church. This community-oriented project enables people to meet over tea (or coffee) and cakes to organise their own activities. Transport can be provided for anyone who may otherwise have difficulty attending. For details, please call 0845 822 2820 or see our website, www.woodbridgelions.org.uk. FITNESS “Great reasons to take up running...” CHEAP There’s no need for any expensive equipment. All you need is a suitable pair of running shoes. EFFECTIVE It’s hugely effective for improving cardiovascular function, muscle toning, weight loss and improving bone density. TIME EFFICIENT You can run anywhere, any time. Run straight from home and have a great work-out in less than the time it takes to drive to the gym. ACCESSIBLE Running is for anyone who wants to run, whatever your age, ability or speed. VARIED Contrary to the beliefs of some, every run is different because of your route, the time of day, the terrain, the weather, your mood, your musical selections, the conversation of your running companion. EVENTS Challenge yourself. Whatever your ability or level of ambition, you can unlock a whole new world of fun-filled events. Branch out to parkrun trail runs, relays, mud runs, night runs and more. AN INSPIRING LITTLE GEM SOPHIA HEEROMA

“You may remember our story last year about this incredible little lady. Here’s an update from Sophia’s mum” Our beautiful Sophia was born at Ipswich hospital in October 2013. Soon after birth, Sophia was diagnosed with a rare skull condition, Craniosynostosis. The condition is caused by plates in the skull joining together too early, this in turn caused bossing to her forehead and her face to bend. We were immediately transferred to Great Ormond Street for further tests. Once they had seen Sophia, we were told that the only way to correct her condition was through surgery. However, they had more bad news. Sophia also has a rare chromosome disorder, which will give her physical and learning delays. Sophia had her surgery in 2015 and it was a complete success. We could now concentrate on her chromosome disorder and find the help we needed. Ipswich hospital gave us amazing support and put us in contact with the Child Development Centre. They put together a team of specialists to assist with Sophia’s physical and mental development. Whilst testing Sophia we found that she also had Global Developmental Delay and possible Autism. We are now in 2017 and Sophia’s progress has been slow but positive. However she still has the mental age of about 9 months. She has learned to walk, climb and babble. Sophia is such a happy little girl and is very determined, every day there are small progresses and we are delighted. She started school last year at Thomas Wolsey and they have been fantastic. There she has all the help she needs to further develop. But Sophia also has fun with swimming and music therapy. All the development services are now arranged around her at her school. This has been a brilliant solution for Sophia, giving her instant help when she needs it. Sophia and her family recently went on holiday to Spain. This was a very stressful and worrying time for us, as we had never taken her abroad before. We didn’t know what to expect, however we didn’t need to worry. Sophia loved every single minute of it. Here’s to the next one! I have also been doing a lot of fundraising for Great Ormond Street by baking and some walking events in London, my most recent one being a 25km and 16 bridges trek with my dad. From all the events I have raised some great funds for Great Ormond Street. I’m already looking to take part in more fundraising walks next year.

MAKING A MEAL OF IT Microwave meals. Do I need say anymore? Oh, I don’t dispute the fact that these days they’re delicious (and possibly equally nutritious), unlike when they were first conceived. Do you remember when whatever dish you purchased always had the same overwhelming taste of plastic and preservatives? Today, however they’re amazing. I mean, if you fancy a King Prawn with Pomegranate and Quinoa starter with Venison Lasagne to follow, not only am I gobsmacked you’re reading my humble column but you can have both micro-ready. So I’m not arguing about what you can buy as a ready meal; all prepared for you to be blatted by powerful electromagnetic radiation so its polar molecules rotate at such a rate that they’re cooked by dielectric heating (have I put you off your microwavable meatballs and spaghetti yet?). No, that’s not in question, what I’m miffed about is the design of the packaging. Okay picture this. You’re hungry after a long day at work nicking post-it pads, flicking paper clips at the work experience boy, showing your colleagues your black toenail and watching cat (or Tom Hardy if you’re our editor) videos on YouTube; then 5 o’clock arrives and you’re famished. You head to the local shop on your way home and spot the delicious looking Peppa 46

“Random ramblings by our local lad” Pig bangers and mash meal for one. Arriving home you kick off your shoes and head into your Magnet kitchen complete with revolving spice rack and Delia Smith cookery book holder. You lift the pack up over your head because the cooking instructions are on the bottom. You squint. You fudge around to find your spare reading glasses in the drawer everyone has that’s full of junk and take another look. No chance. You switch on your mobile phone’s torch and try reading again. No luck. So you flip the pack over to read it the way nature intended. The beautifully presented contents now look like a 4 day old cat litter tray. ‘Pierce the lid several times,’ it instructs. One stab proceeds in making an enormous tear. Once cooked peel back the film lid it says. Yeah, right! It doesn’t peel, it splits and breaks off letting out a superheated jet of steam to sear off at least 2 layers of skin. After you’ve finished running your scolded digits under cold water you try and finally serve the contents only to find the 475°C tray is so flimsy your meal flops out all over your lino and minions slippers. So by 8:47pm you eventually kick back on your favourite armchair to dine on… toast
