Welcome to May... Some people really talk down Winter Blues but I swear by it - as we’ve finally had some consistent, decent sunshine to brighten up our days, I can honestly say I feel a little weight off my shoulders. This month I’d like to give a special shout out to the BASIC Life Charity. We‘ve supported this local charity from the very beginning due to their sheer willingness and level of activity in helping those in need in Felixstowe (p.7). Congratulations BASIC and thank you for all you do!

10

Until next time, I wish you all a bright and beautiful May!

The Felixstowe Harpers United Part of the Felixstowe legacy, Felixstowe Harpers United came into existence in 1979, originally being called East Anglia Customs back then. After various changes to the club, merges and name changes, Chairman David Kyle caught up with us to tell us a bit about it and hopes to encourage new players to join, committee personnel to help run the club and for local grass-roots football fans to consider supporting this Local Senior SIL (Suffolk and Ipswich League) team. Tell us a little bit about the history of the club. Well, from starting out in Division 7 of the Suffolk and Ipswich League the club had progressed all the way to Division 3 in the late eighties, but in 1994/95 they were merged with Ferry Boat and became Felixstowe United. Since then the club has moved up and down the league table, being promoted to Senior Division back in 2000, but thus far we’ve not made it to Div 1 yet. With new management coming in in 2009 we were then merged with the Felixstowe Harpers and got our final name, Fexlistowe Harpers United. We’ve had plenty of changes of management and teams and I hope that I can bring some continuity to the team. We’d like to lift a trophy one of these days to show for all our efforts! How is the club set up? At the moment the club consists of one squad who play at the Trimley Sports and Social Club. We’ve had up to three teams at any one time playing under the name of Felixstowe Harpers United, but due to commitment of players, managers, difficulty in funding teams and having to run them with a very small committee we’ve since decided to pull the teams out of the league and stick with one for now. Originally the club was set up with a team of players from the Customs personnel, presumably with the idea of just playing football together in a more organised fashion. Because of all the club changes over the years it’s now a real mix of people wanting to play football in more than

“Rallying support for this fantastic local football club” just a ‘Saturday morning kick-about’ capacity. It can be difficult to get dedication, not just from team members but from back office staff and managers alike, but I hope that if there’s anyone reading this who would be interested in helping at the club, whether as administrative personnel or on the pitch, they’ll get in touch - the more the merrier to bring our team to glory! What positions need to be filled at present? You’d be amazed at how much goes on behind the scenes, so at the moment we need everything from someone with an interest in website upkeep to promotion and marketing (which would include bringing our programme/brochure back to life)! Other specific rolls we are looking for are a physio, a photographer (both for the upkeep of player profiles on the website and of matches to send to local papers), fundraisers/event organisers and match reporters who would then have their work published in the Evening Star as well as on the website. What do you need to do to get involved? Contact me, Dave Kyle on 07949 680541 or visit www.pitchero.com/clubs/felixstoweharpersunited to keep an eye on the website for pre-season training dates and venues. We still have a few games left this season followed by a couple of months off, but the committee and managers will be busy getting ready for the next season, so please do get in touch at any time if you are interested in getting involved.

Blues, Country and the Best Musical! It’s all at the Spa! “Updates from our local theatre”

This month it’s the Blues Brothers Experience at the Spa on Saturday 6th May from 7.30pm, capturing the essence of both the music and the film in an electrifying stage show which includes a live 10-piece band. Next for country music fans is a delight with Islands in the Stream on Saturday 13th May again from 7.30pm celebrating the Queen and King of country, Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. Avenue Q storms into town next with three performances, such is their popularity, from Thursday 18th through to Saturday 20th May. Avenue Q is the outrageous part flesh, part felt musical that packs a lot of heart. Sesame Street meets Seinfeld in this outrageous and very grown-up show. Laugh out loud funny. NB: Explicit Content Warning - Over 16 strongly recommended.

The following weekend the Spa goes electric again this time with the Bryan Adams Experience on Saturday 27th May from 7.30pm. Front man Stuart authentically emulates the look and sound of Bryan Adams while the 4-piece band reproduce all of the hits to perfection. Next month a Tribute to the Andrews Sisters on

Tuesday 6th June is already proving popular as is the All-Star Comedy show at the end of that same week on Friday 9th from 7.30pm. Compere Jarred Christmas hosts the night, which will feature three comedians including Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo favourite Stewart Francis. Joe Longthorne’s vocals will be resonating around the theatre the following night – Saturday 10th June from 7.30pm. Joe will perform a wide repertoire of material gathered over his 40-year career in show business. The Manfreds return to the Spa also in June plus the Great British Seaside Special coming to the Spa in August. Check out the website www.felixstowespa.co.uk or you can call the box office, open from 11am on 01394 284962 Box Office open Tue-Sun, 11am-4pm 01394 284962. The Lounge and Terrace fully licensed restaurants open every day until 5pm (plus two hours before each show).

BASIC Life Charity updates We’ve had a lot happening at BASIC over the last month with an amazing amount of donations from the local community! In fact, at one point we found it difficult to accept any more pieces of large furniture at the Felixstowe shop simply due to a lack of space. So thank you to all who donated and sorry to those who offered great items which we couldn’t accept just now. We have also received financial donations over the past month from Clr. Peter Coleman representing Suffolk Coastal District Council, Ranelagh Road Christian Fellowship, SNAP Housing and the former Trimley Carnival Committee. We would like to publicly thank the above for their wonderful support which is very much appreciated. Pop-Up Shop News Our Pop-Up shop project is really expanding quickly and we are so grateful to the volunteers who enable them to work so well. Members of The Church of St. John the Baptist with St. Edmunds are the driving force behind our Langer Road Pop-Up, whilst at St. Philips the churches of St. Mary Walton, Maidstone Road Baptist Church and Seaton Road Methodist Church combine to provide volunteers. We would like to thank all involved. At the same time we’re delighted to see the Pop-Up at St. Francis on the Chantry estate flourishing and we’re in talks to create another on the Gainsborough Estate in Ipswich in the near future.

“A regular update from this brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support” We were particularly touched by the Moslem community at Cann Hill Mosque, Leytonstone, witnessing what we’re doing in East London and then deciding to donate large quantities of food in support. We’re proud that we are providing an avenue for different faiths to come together in support of a common cause. During April we received the news that the Hamilton Road Tesco store will be joining in the donations of unsold food to us. We have already booked collection slots and look forward to being able to provide even more items. We are also waiting for the full implementation of the Waitrose supermarkets in Ipswich joining – so the future is bright and we hope we will be able to expand our pop-up idea even further afield in time. As you can see we have a lot going on as we continue to expand and we hope we can provide even more assistance to the brilliant Felixstowe, Walton and Trimley communities over the next year. Here’s hoping for a sunny and peaceful May!

g veaetables g One pan sprina & salmon We love an easy dinner, particularly a healthy one. The good thing about this easy recipe is that you can add salmon for a full meal or make it as an accompaniment to a good roast - the choice is yours! Ingredients: 400g new potatoes, halved 8 asparagus spears, halved and trimmed 8 cherry tomatoes 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar handful of basil leaves 240g Salmon fillets (optional)

“Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best... food!” Throw in the cherry tomatoes and vinegar and nestle the salmon amongst the vegetables. Drizzle with the remaining oil and return to the oven for a final 10-15 mins until the salmon is cooked. Scatter over the basil leaves and serve everything scooped straight from the dish. Yum!

Method: Heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7. Tip the potatoes and 1 tbsp of olive oil into an ovenproof dish, then roast the potatoes for 20 mins until starting to brown. Toss the asparagus in with the potatoes, then return to the oven for 15 mins.

Felixstowe town and around As I write the Easter break is fast approaching. With this in mind I looked at the Visit Felixstowe website and was amazed at the number of events planned for Easter, but also in the coming months. If you have not already done so, do take a look at this website which is full of interesting items covering a wide variety of subjects. The 2017 tourism season was launched in April by the Felixstowe Forward team. This event was attended by hoteliers, businesses, amusement providers and Town Councillors. There are new tear-off street maps which will be available in shops, restaurants and hotels as well as the tourism beach huts. There are also new hotel packs for visitors to pick up and find out what is going on in the town and where to visit and eat, and leaflets advertising Felixstowe as a place to visit are being delivered in Suffolk, Norfolk and East Essex. This is a concerted effort to publicise Felixstowe and ensure people know what a great place it is to visit either on holiday or for a day. The tourism beach huts are still proving very popular – especially the one opposite the Town Hall. The second one has been moved from opposite Manning’s to a new location behind the two kiosks on Martello Park and I am sure that one will receive lots of enquiries in its new location. Both of these huts are manned by volunteers. Complaints about the state of the shelters along the seafront are coming in thick and fast at the moment, including the state of some of the benches and fingerpost signs. These complaints have been forwarded to SCDC and SCS/Norse. The Town Council did receive a consultation briefing from an officer of SCDC regarding the future use of two of the shelters for a commercial/retail element to be added as well as retaining some of the seating.

10

“Update from our local town councillor” In the main the idea was found to be interesting and further information is awaited as to what the outcome of this might entail. That the shelters are in a deplorable state was not denied and little or no maintenance work has been carried out to them for some 5 years! The benches in question are those with the “sunburst” design and need painting, as do the finger signs. Councillors are all plugging away at these matters and hopefully there will be some positive outcomes soon! Vandalism still seems to be a continuing problem and Martello Park is once again a target as well as the Spa Garden shelters. The culprits of the vandalism earlier in the year have been caught and I trust a suitable punishment will be meted out to those involved. However, lack of policing of our prime seafront areas continues to be a concern and letters have been written to the Chief Constable and the PCC on this subject. Again, responses are awaited. The Friends of the Seafront Gardens (Saturday group) will be back on duty at the end of April and will continue to assist in the upkeep of the gardens during the summer months as normal. If anyone is interested in joining our happy band of gardeners, do get in touch with me. Spring really is here – so enjoy! Doreen Savage

Jog On! Jogging. Scarcely am I seen partaking in this curious fitness activity outdoors anymore. These days when I don the dayglow tank-top, short-shorts, towelling sweatbands, knee-high socks and plimsolls, it’s to pound the treadmill in the confines of the gym. Well can you blame me? Previously when I’ve dashed along our fine promenade here on the peninsular I got gawped at; I can’t think for the life of me why! However, upon missing my date with the houseof-pain the other day, I waited for dusk to veil ‘The Stowe’ in sub-light before sheepishly pulling on my running gear and exposing a naked knee (the other was modelling a length of Tubigrip following a mishap in an attempt to Zumba) to the outside world. Now tell me, what is it with fellas in tights these days? I must have clocked at least 4 other male runners wearing what appear to be very high denier black tights, under their shorts. It’s not a flattering look boys! If it wasn’t for the absence of a pair of hob-nail boots, you could well be mistaken for Max Wall!

“Random ramblings by our local lad” Also, and let me make it clear that I’m not knocking it as I’m fully aware that it’s a magnificent form of exercise, but power walking; let’s discuss. Please do tell me, is there another way to carry this off without looking like you’re desperate to pay a visit? I actually directed the first person I saw power walking (knees together, bottom poking out, pace somewhere between walking and jogging, pained look on the face. You can imagine it can’t you?) to the nearest public convenience. Then there’s the folk with all the gear! Prada tracksuit in the finest valour, unblemished Valentino trainers and personalised head-band. And of course the obligatory water bottle that’s shaped just like the handle on a Dyson vacuum cleaner, which has clearly undergone decades of scientific development so you can run and drink without tarnishing your priceless tracksuit top with PowerAid! These are the individuals which slip out of their high marques motor cars, trot down to the prom’s edge, stretch for 30 seconds and nip off for a glass of Prosecco. Oh, and I have to say in more recent times, jogging is no longer a safe keep-fit pursuit. Why? I hear you ask… well I’ll tell you in one (well hyphenated) word... fitness-watch! Just as folk expressed how dangerous Pokemon Go was in respect of kids having their face buried in their smart-phone whilst walking, runners do the same with the fitnesswatch. In fear of finishing before reaching the precise amount of steps, or dropping beneath a particular heart-rate it’s not uncommon to have a lycra-on-lycra moment with a stranger nowadays! Then there’s the funky feet of the runner! But it might be wise to draw it to a close now.
