Supporting Level Two and Guide Dogs for the Blind Some upcoming dates for your diary - lovely events to help raise much needed funds for two brilliant charities. Now celebrating its fifteenth year, this first charity is Level Two Youth Project, which provides facilities and support for young people age 10-25 in Felixstowe, via its youth hub (above Tesco). Level Two runs open access youth club sessions as well as other services meeting the needs of vulnerable young people. This includes a highly successful 1-to-1 mentoring programme and detached youth work around the town, working with young people with additional needs, young carers and holiday activity programmes.

The second charity is the local volunteer fundraising branch for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Many of their volunteers are also puppy walkers, boarders, speakers or guide dog owners and the charity now provides “Buddy Dogs” for visually impaired children. Local Person

Ryan Gooding - The Modern Medium Well this is something a little different for you readers - if you haven’t heard of this local fella yet then we’re very excited to introduce you to him. We haven’t yet tested his talents, but the word is that this local gem has a gift you just can’t deny. We met with Ryan to find out about the charming twenty-five year old and what his gift entails...

How did you discover you could do what you do? When I was about four years old, I could see or hear spirits. I would also find I’d just know things about people that I shouldn’t really know. I didn’t really understand any of it but I was never scared by it. When I was in my teens, things became much more clearer to me and by the age of fourteen I could give accurate readings. How did you get into this as a career? It was actually a friend’s mum that encouraged me. It’s been three years now and I really do love it! It never feels like work and it’s amazing how you can actually change people’s lives. You can really give comfort, hope and guidance to people. How do people respond to what you do? Some people love it, some people hate it. Some people believe in it, some don’t. I’ve had grown men see me because someone bought a reading for them as a gift. They’ll come in as a cynic and leave very impressed.

What are group readings like? I host readings and public demonstrations across the UK and overseas. They can be a rollercoaster of emotions,

sometimes sad, sometimes very funny. Spirits can have a sense of humour after all! I also love having a laugh with the audience and you can really feel the audience joining in. I’ve done readings for celebrities like Daniella Westbrook (Eastenders Soap Star), Gemma Collins (TOWIE), Alex Reid and Union J (boyband).

Any upcoming events where locals can see you in action? I often have a Paranormal Night at the Hand in Hand in Trimley St Martin. It always sells out and it’s great fun. On 18th November I’ll be at the Gainsborough Labour Club in Ipswich. Details are on my website, www.ryangooding.co.uk. What would you say is your goal with your gift? My aim is to make mediumship more accessible, especially to bring it to a large and younger audience. Out of the dark ages and into the 21st Century.

How can people get in touch with you? People interested in trying out a reading can contact me via my PA, Sara, on 07570 651891. Well there you have it - Felixstowe’s very own psychic! How cool! If you’ve been to visit Ryan, we’d love to hear about your experience.

Firefighters Raise Funds for MacMillan

Always keen to support the community, these local firefighters donned their baking pinnies and got to work on some seriously yummy cakes for the MacMillan Coffee Morning. The lads did a great job and raised £534 in support of MacMillan nurses. The event was organised by Alex Stephenson and Peter Burgess, two firefighters from the Felixstowe community fire station. It was a great success and lots of fun for those who helped to make it a morning to remember.

MacMillan nurses provide much needed support for cancer patients and carers to give practical, emotional and medical assistance. Many residents and businesses participated in the MacMillan Coffee Morning, but seeing as we don’t get to

hear too much from our local fire station these days, we thought we’d share this lovely photo of our firefighters - it’s just a shame we didn’t get to see them in those pinnies!

The lads would like to thank all who were a part of their coffee morning, all who used their culinary skills to craft the most delicious cakes and to all who donated to the cause. Well done boys. Keep up your good work!

Honey Roasted Sesame Cashews

Hmm... a semi-healthy little treat to keep you warm in November! Perfect to pack and nibble on while watching fireworks for Guy Fawkes Night.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon of butter

1/4 teaspoon of coarse salt 3/4 teaspoon sugar

1 tablespoon of honey 2 cups raw cashews

Sesame seeds (however many you like) Method

Place a baking sheet on a baking tray and evenly spread the cashews. Roast in a 250° oven for about 8-10 minutes until they just begin to brown. Be sure to shuffle them around a bit now and again to make sure that they don’t burn.

and toss the cashews again. You can use as little or as many sesame seeds as you like. As a tip, shaking the cashews with the sesame seeds in a food bag can coat them more evenly.

Evenly sprinkle the sugar, salt, and sesame seeds

Mmmm...

While the cashews roast, melt the butter and honey together. Immediately after you take the cashews from the oven, toss them in the honey-butter mixture until evenly coated.

Once coated, pop the cashews back in the oven for 8-10 more minutes - watch them to make sure they don’t burn. When they come out, toss them once again to pick up any stray sesame seeds. Eat them nice and warm with hot chocolate or allow them cool completely on the sheet.

Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

Felixstowe’s Very Own Turkish Delight

If there’s one thing I’m really loving about dining in Felixstowe, it’s the wonderful selection of genuinely great food from all corners of the world. One of them is Orwell Road’s newest eatery, Anatolia. This humble restaurant hasn’t been around for long, but it has fast won the hearts of locals across the town. Not only are the staff charming, friendly and obviously proud to be part of our town, but the food is literally to die for!

I can’t say I’m usually a huge fan of lamb, however, I thought I’d try something a little different to what I’m used to and I have to say, I’m really amazed at how much flavour Dogan (the head chef) managed to get in such a tender and suculant meat. Joint owners, Dogan pictured above (left) and Musa (right) along with Musa’s lovely wife, Filiz (centre) came to the UK twenty years ago. They’ve been in the catering industry for many years, but most recently decided to set up this lovely new restaurant. Named after the historical Turkish

region of Mesopotamia (famous for whirling dirvishes and the caves of Cappadocia), Anatolia’s menu has something for everyone - from fish stews to traditional kofte and shish. There is a diverse menu also great for children, vegetarians and take away options too. If the photos above don’t make you salivate I challenge you to make a visit and refrain from taking a deep, satisfied breathe, savouring in the delicious smell of some seriously gorgeous, genuine Turkish food. THE FELIXSTOWE TOWN CRIER UPDATES Felixstowe Town and Around News October has arrived with a golden glow but some chilly nights and mornings. I really am not looking forward to the darker nights and colder temperatures. I had my first invitation to a Christmas meal today – 4th October! Work is underway at last on the pier head building. You will have noticed that part of the Pier Bight car park has been

cordoned off and this is to allow the area to be used as a compound for the work to come. The new car parking area on Sea Road will help compensate for the loss of parking on Pier Bight. Despite some of the usual disparaging comments on social media this project is very expensive and what we end up with is as a result of escalating costs from the original design that was planned to what will be the end result next year. Great to see that the Pier management have sent out a letter to residents in the area explaining what is happening. Great PR which I hope will continue during the development.

The results of the community impact day held in September have now been published. This event involved various organisations including environmental health, Licensing and Active communities, Suffolk Fire and Rescue, Police, SCS/Norse, SCC Trading Standards staff and Guide Dogs for the Blind along with some local councillors. Ninety speed tickets were issued by the Police and they made two arrests. Environmental Health gave health and safety advice to 48 households, SCS/Norse removed graffiti, litter and overgrown vegetation outside homes and Trading Standards visited residents to give scam avoidance advice. All this took place in the South Ward of Felixstowe.

The hearing of the application for housing development on Ferry Road took place in October. The meeting was held at Old Felixstowe Community Centre as there were so many who wished to attend; the main hall was packed and the meeting was a long one. Members of Felixstowe Town Council planning committee heard from residents with their concerns and objections during public question time before the meeting was formally convened. Whilst it is acknowledged there is an outline planning permission on the land for development the proposals before the committee gave rise to concerns, not least the fact that there were five, three storey blocks of flats included in the proposals. There were numerous other matters too: close proximity of new housing to existing houses, drainage, right of way and traffic concerns to name a few. The decision of the committee was to recommend refusal of the proposed development before them but acknowledging that development was needed but of a lower density and type and listing all the other matters discussed as reasons for the decision. The Town Council is a statutory consultee not

Please mention

a decision making body – but hopefully, our concerns will be taken on board when the application goes before the District Council which is the decision making authority.

I had the pleasure of being one of the judges choosing the winning photograph in this year’s Landguard photographic competition. The winning picture is stunning. More next month. - Doreen Savage.

Orwell Decorative & Fine Arts Society The Society held its October meeting on Wednesday October 5. Lecturer Magdalen Evans spoke of the charity Fine Cell Work which runs various projects promoting stitching and embroidery in prisons. A thought provoking talk showing that art and beauty can be found in unexpected places.

Next month, November 2nd, we host Jo Walton with a lecture entitled 'More Than Meets the Eye: British Artists and Camouflage'. Jo is a freelance lecturer and has been a guide at Tate Britain and Tate Modern.

So why not come along and enjoy good company and an interesting talk? We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months. Lectures last about an hour, are wonderfully illustrated and are presented by national and international lecturers. Guests and non-members welcome, provided we have available space. A £6 donation is asked. For more info tel. Wendy Robbins on 07736-417347 or email info@ orwelldfas.org.uk. Visit our website at http://www.orwelldfas. org.uk/ for latest events and news. ODFAS is a member society of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies. Registered charity No. 1104724

Felixstowe Family History Society Now that the colder weather is here maybe you want to start to research your family history and are unsure how to go about it or maybe you want to resume your research and need some help to sort out which of the many websites to use. If so then come and see us at Broadway House in Orwell Road, Felixstowe on Thursdays from 10.15am-12.15pm and we will see if we can point you in the right direction. If you wish to join the society the yearly cost is only £10 for a single membership or £14 for a joint membership (living at the same address), and if you join you will get free entry to our monthly meetings and a quarterly magazine. You can join at the research sessions on Thursdays or come along to one of our speaker meetings which are held at Broadway House, Orwell Road, Felixstowe on the 2nd Wednesday of most months starting at 7.30pm.

The next meeting (in conjuction with Felixstowe History and Museum Society) is Wednesday 9th November 2016 when the talk will be 'The Clarksons (Abolition of Slavery)' with Bob Merrett. Meetings are free to members and £1 for visitors with refreshments available after the talk.

Lioness Club of Felixstowe

Colneis Flower Club

At the beginning of September, several Lionesses embarked on a river cruise on the ‘Orwell Lady’, with ‘60s and ‘70s music and a buffet meal. Unfortunately, after all the lovely sunny weather, torrential rain was our lot. However, we managed to enjoy ourselves (most of the time!).

Famous works or art were the inspiration for Jo Poulter’s demonstration. From the Birth of Venus to Gauguin’s Girls on the Beach, Jo deftly created beautiful arrangements which filled the stage with the vibrant colour of an artist’s pallet. She used foliage and flowers in inventive ways and she explained how to do the manipulations so that we could all ‘have a go’ when we got home. Her containers were unusual and her stories about her family and days as a flower arranger were very funny.

Our big event of the summer was the Charter Presentation Night of a new club, the Lioness Lion Club of East Anglia, held at Waldringfield Golf Club on 20th August. We enjoyed a delicious meal and were each presented with a badge and certificate by District Governor 105EA, Lion Nigel Folkard. Several Lionesses have been making dresses for the charity ‘Little Dresses for Africa’. Some have bought packs of children’s underwear to send along with the dresses. By the time you read this, the Clairvoyant Evening at the Trimley Sports and Social Club will have come and gone; profits will be shared between BEAT (an eating disorders charity) and the Disability Advice Service (Suffolk). Since 1998 when her career as a beauty thereaptist began, Jennifer Louise has earned herself an impressive fifty-four diplomas in all aspects of beauty. Now celebrating The Salon’s first anniversary, there’s a whole range of hair, beauty and tanning treatments Jennifer and her staff offer. Here’s Jennifer to tell us more... From hands, nails and hair pampering to mechanical and electrical face and body treatment (electrolosys, facelifts and semi-permanent makeup), The Salon caters to anyone of any gender or age - there is always something for everyone. We specialise in spray tanning, all aspects of massage, reflexology and aromatherapy. We are also very proud to be using Pevonia, world-leading skin care products.

Our sunbeds are also unique in that they are not normal machines. These are specialist red and blue light beds, specifically designed to produce more collagen and elastin in the skin to improve the appearance of fine lines (anti-aging) for scars (to minimise scarring) and for eczema, psoriasis,

I’m very proud of my wonderful staff who are well-qualified and experienced. When you come to The Salon you can expect to recieve a warm welcome in our reception before your hair stylist or beauty therapist takes you to one of our beauty rooms or hairstyling stations. Infact, we are currently looking for an NVQ3 hair stylist to join our busy team, so do get in touch if you have the desired qualifications and would like to work in a vibrant and buzzing group.

I personally would like to welcome readers of The Felixstowe Magazine who have never been to The Salon to come along and see what treatments we offer. As we come up to the Christmas season, our diary soon fills up with ladies and gents preparing for Christmas office parties, so I’d always advise customers to book well in advance.

Christmas Offers

One voucher per customer. Expires 24th Dec 2016.

At The Salon we also have great prices for children’s haircuts, pamper parties for princesses, hen parties, wedding packages, tanning for men and much more.

The most commented thing about The Salon is how friendly and relaxed our environment is - whilst having a hairstyle or treatment our customers often enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee, tea, hot chocolate or a glass of prosecco - even mulled wine during the Christmas season.

13 Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

Eyes Down for a Telling Off! Humans are funny creatures aren’t they? We’re blessed with opposing thumbs, we possess the gift of reason, we’ve engineered gigantic ships, defeated gravity with gargantuan flying machines, spanned vast rivers with steel bridges, we can fathom out and solve complex mathematical problems and we’ve conquered many life-threatening diseases. So what do we do this remarkable ability? Yep, we play bingo. Why is bingo so addictive? Is it the notion that one day you’re going to win the big prize on the National Game, or is it that it’s just a great laugh and a wonderful chance to meet pals? Mind you, be sure you don’t laugh too much or too loudly! The first time I reached for my dabber and brandished it in a bingo hall I received a right royal ticking off. Picture me, tongue out the corner of my mouth, intently listening to the caller belting out the numbers – and boy aren’t they quick!

I was soon put in my place by a lady called Gladys who was wearing a hand-knitted cardie with a pug on the front (which at first glance resembled Ed Balls), Velcro fastened comfie shoes, reading glasses on a chain and a handy packet of Mint Imperials to the side of her.

Gladys is evidently a pro bingo player. Not only could she play about thirty books at once (I just about managed three), she also kept an eye on her friends’ books. Every now and then you’d hear: “You’ve missed fifteen on your second book from the bottom Edie,” or, “Phyllis! You’ve got a Now I suppose I can be forgiven as someone who’s only ever line you daft moo… HOUSE!” played prize bingo, but you see, apparently it’s not the done Then there’s the ‘false call’ of shame! thing to wolf-whistle after the number eleven is called. Or indeed to ‘whoo-whoo’ upon the call of fifty-nine [the Brighton If you’re unfamiliar with bingo halls, when a game is in progress, there are floor walkers (they’re a bit like Line], and especially not shout out ‘thank you whistlers’ Dementors from the Harry Potter films, except they’re to acknowledge those who joined in with the train whistle sendup…which to be honest was only the folk on my table. wearing waistcoats, wielding a microphone and they’re scarier!) who are guardians of this sacred number-based ritual. If you ‘shout a call’, for a full house or similar, their job is to swoop down and read out the said winning combination for checking. But they have a much darker side…to shame the false callers.

Now I have to admit the grub’s good and the bar reasonably priced, so I’d filled up on a splendid chicken curry and a diet cola. But, mid game the two combined, then to my surprise a floor-walker made his way over to me, lifted up my book and asked what I had called on. I informed him I hadn’t called which was then announced across the hall via the loud-speaker system as a ‘false-call’. Amidst a torrent of tutting and mumbled reprimands I privately announced to the floor-walker that I hadn’t called and in fact burped rather loudly... his mic was still on!

Local Charity & Their News

BASIC Life Charity

Since registering as an independent Charitable Trust in 2000, BASIC has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. Happy November! As the nights pull in and we have those cold, dark mornings, let’s continue to work together to make our community stronger than ever!

Tesco

We are very proud to announce that The BASIC Life Charity are now an official Charity Partner of Tesco! After a lot of discussion with Fare Share, who are administering Tesco’s new initiative into avoiding food waste, BASIC are at the forefront of implementing the scheme. We shall be working extremely closely with their Martlesham store. Pop-Up Community shops

The community shop which is held at St.Edmunds church, Langer Road, Felixstowe each Tuesday from 11am has really proved to be a very popular community resource. We even introduced live music during October with excellent entertainment from local duo Paul and Terry. Last month we were delighted to support the Walton guides during October. Some of the girls helped out at our PopUp shop during the summer and this led to several new members. Our donation will assist with essential items.

iLoveBusiness BREAKFAST

A ‘BASIC Community Pop-Up shop’ opened in Leytonstone on 13th October and, as mentioned last month, lots of others are opening soon. We’re have a constant number of interested people from other areas visit and in November we look forward to welcoming Bishop Mike to see the pop-up in operation. The Little BASIC Pantry

We’re pleased to advise that since we started in September, the pantry has been self-regulating with people ‘taking what they need’ and giving ‘what they can’. This is exactly what we wanted – so thank you so much to all who have donated. We’d like to see more in the town!

Wishing you all a wonderful November! Walton shop: 312 High Street, Walton 01394 279400 www.basic.org.uk
