At the heart of the community JULY 2017 - FREE MONTHLY BUSINESS DIRECTORY AND COMMUNITY NEWS FOR FELIXSTOWE & VILLAGES

Welcome to July... There has been a great deal of tragedy in Manchester and London this past month. It’s been a devestating time, however, where there is such an event, it’s incredible to see the heroes at work. And there have been many. We have been directly supporting various relief organisations, police and fire services, and in doing so, have seen many businesses and individuals go out of their way to help. From locals opening their doors to provide warm beds for the victims and restaurants donating hearty food to the services and volunteers, to hardware stores donating gas masks in the toxic air around the tower and local children giving out water.

In the face of such trauma, humanity stands tall and communities unified. I’d like to use the Editor’s Note to pay tribute to them all. You are incredible. My deepest respect to you all. Wishing all our readers a peaceful July.

BASIC Life Charity After a period of confusing politics and the tragic events in London and Manchester, let’s hope we can get back to some kind of ‘normality’ soon.

We are delighted to join forces with One Life Suffolk who are now offering mini health checks at our St.Edmund’s pop-up every couple of weeks.

At BASIC we would suggest the answer to division of all kinds is to pull together and work with a spirit of kindness, generosity and fairness to create a local community which is inclusive and working for the well-being of all. Felixstowe has a great community spirit and we see this almost every day when people donate fantastic items to us - so that the proceeds will benefit other local people. At our Pop-Up shops there is seldom a session where one or more of the volunteers will be touched (sometimes to tears) by the kindness of those attending, whether customers or donators. We love to support the other charities in the town and it is amazing to realise how much is being done in all areas of life whether it’s The Hope Trust helping older people, Level 2 with Youth or organisations like Cancer Research or The Heart Foundation working towards better health nationwide. As we continue through a difficult time for the country we feel that it’s essential for community groups to be pro-active in helping local people.

Here for you every hour of every day

Karen from One Life

Suffolk

At our Wadgate Road pop-up a similar service is offered by Walton Parish Nurses. We see these as a prime example of ways we can reach out to the community and assisting with needs which otherwise might not be met. Let’s celebrate the fact that we live in such a great place as Felixstowe and continue to support all who are making our community stronger. Have a great July.

A-Boat Turn Norfolk Broads. No please don’t write in, I’m not referring to the young ladies from north of the Waveney even if they do speak funny. They really do though, I mean it’s pronounced: ‘It’s cold’, not: “Aas code”. And they struggle with the ‘O’ sound; have you ever noticed that? Up there it’s pronounced as an: ‘Oo’, like, “cooch trip” (coach trip), “Loo and behode” (Lo and behold), and I won’t even go into what they say if they’re accusing you of being “Po-faced”. But that aside, I mentioned the Broads as I’ve just been pootling around up there on my hols. Now my significant other and I love boats, indeed we want to retire to one in the not-sodistant future, but what is it about folk when they take charge of a vessel, regardless of its shape and size? The easiest to spot are the types that have never operated a boat in their life; they’ll be the ones wearing Bermuda shorts, a vest and a captain’s hat. Yes, an elegant peaked cap made from the finest polyester and complete with a warning not to get it too close to a naked flame. It’s proudly placed on their bonce as they crash into the nearest reed-bed as they try and find the boat’s handbrake. And there are the stags. It’s funny they’re called that really isn’t it? A stag to me is a magnificent beast that stands grandly, silhouetted on a hillock, surveying his vast wild kingdom.

4

“Random ramblings by our local lad” In this instance, however, when I refer to stags I’m talking of the belching, pot-bellied gaggle of lads humiliating their about-to-be-married chum. This segment of humanity always finds itself on a broads/canal boat dressed – and I’m yet to find an exception to this – as… pirates. The groom-to-be will however be adorned in the garb of a buxom galleon figurehead called Nancy. As they pass you, the most intoxicated in the group will wave a plastic (and possibly broken) cutlass at you whilst shouting: “Aaargh,” in a west-country accent before slipping on what is left of last night’s curry. And we can’t forget the ‘Mrs Bucket’ types. The moment they climb aboard their holiday cruiser they behave like they’re on the royal yacht. There’ll be a magnum of Babycham in a bucket of HRH Elizabeth II shaped ice cubes. A Battenberg cake will be placed on a doilylined Pyrex plate somewhere in the galley. The matriarch in all her finery will be offering the commoners her best, refined royal wave as she passes the packed marinas on her boat aptly named… Passing Wind!

Homemade Veaaie Veggie Crisps These work perfectly for a healthy afternoon snack without hitting the bag of crisps. Olive oil is ideal for cooking as it gives these particular vegetables a lovely mellow flavour, plus thanks to the natural taste of these particular root veggies a pinch of salt offsets the sweetness perfectly.

“Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best... food!”

Ingredients: 1 beetroot 1 sweet potato 1 parsnip olive oil plus a little salt for seasoning

Drizzle over a small amount of olive oil, although not too much. It’s best if the crisps don’t sit in the oil when baking as again, you’ll end up with them being soggy (and no one likes a soggy crisp!).

Directions:

Place in the oven at 220C/200C (fan)/Gas Mark 7 for 25 minutes until crisps are golden and curling at the edges. turn over and cook for a further 5 minutes, remove from the oven and allow to cool.

Wash all the vegetables and pat dry. Thinly slice all of the vegetables into ‘crisp’ shapes. This is easiest with a proper vegetable slicer as it keeps the thickness consistent, but if you don’t have one don’t worry - a good sharp knife and some patience will do the trick too!

Serve with a sprinkle of salt for flavour and your favourite dip. Yum!

Once again pat the vegetables with kitchen towel to remove any excess juice. The dryer the vegetables the crispier they’ll get. Lay them out on a piece of baking parchment making sure they don’t overlap - overlapping the crisps will result in them becoming soggy when cooked rather than hard and crispy.

Felixstowe’s Multi-Cultural Festival “Uniting communities” As Felixstowe doesn’t have a diverse cultural event, Visit Felixstowe would like to pilot a Multi-Cultural Festival for the town which will be taking place on 12th August in the Shared Space area of Hamilton Road. The festival will be a showcase of different cultures we have in our diverse community. This will be a chance for all communities in the area to come together and celebrate both their own and other cultures with music, craft, foods & other entertainment. We are having a selection of music at The Triangle which includes a steel band performing from 12noon. But don’t wait until the 12th August to get involved... there are many ways you can be part of this wonderful festival! For information on how, please contact: felixstowe.forward@eastsuffolk.gov.uk.

Felixstowe town and around Another month has passed and we are now half way through the year. It has been a somewhat horrific time for the country so far this year with the terror attacks in Manchester and London and once again I find myself counting my blessings that I live in Felixstowe where, hopefully, we do not have to fear for our safety. That said, it does not do to be complacent about such things, but looking at our beautiful coastline and town and looking and listening to the horrors that exist elsewhere, counting blessings seems essential. Last month I wrote about a visit for Town Councillors to the site of the new Pier building. It was a very interesting and informative visit where we were shown over the whole of the site and told that so far work is on schedule. The main building is very large and the floor was covered with wires and connections for the various machines that will be operating in the space. Offices will be located on the first floor and the two outside shops will be for ice cream and fish and chips. The one thing that I found fascinating is the large bar facility on the right-hand side as you enter. This is set to be very attractive, but what made it so for me was the large “sitting out” area alongside the bar that gives panoramic views across the bay and out to sea. I can see this being a very popular venue with residents and visitors alike. The new Mayor, Nick Barber, and I visited several of our primary schools with Sue Faversham from the Town Hall. The reason for our visits was to ask the pupils to enter the sunflower competition which is part of Felixstowe in Flower. The East of England Co-op very generously provide sunflower seeds each year along with grobags to schools to encourage them to get involved in the competition, and I must admit the enthusiasm of the pupils to grow sunflowers

“Update from our local town councillor” was very encouraging. The sunflowers are measured in September and growers of the tallest ones then receive a prize at the presentation ceremony. Another category of Felixstowe in Flower is the private front garden so if any of you have a pretty front garden to your home, do think about entering this category. It is free! Roadworks around the town have been many and I know that everyone – especially the shop keepers in Hamilton Road – will be glad when the work in that area is completed. Interesting to note that markings indicate taking the new pipes into the site of the proposed Wetherspoons area which gives hope that something will be happening there soon, although at the time of writing there is still no news on when or indeed if, this work will be commencing! It has to be one of the most frequently asked questions from residents, “Any news on the Wetherspoons site?” Lots of entertaining events coming up including the ever entertaining, Music in Felixstowe, and the 5th Annual Felixstowe Book Festival and the opening of the new clubhouse for the Seasiders at the Town Ground to name just a few. Enjoy! Doreen Savage

Celebrating 2 years on the high street On July 17th, two years ago, the doors of Le Riché opened to the public. It’s been a sheer delight to be one of Hamilton Road’s many successful businesses, and we’re so excited to celebrate our second anniversary. I’d like to thank all of our customers over the past two years and all my staff (see photo above) who have been amazing to work with and bring their skill and creativity to Le Riché. I’d like to make a special thanks to my parents who have been a real help at launching this business. I’m proud to announce a new member of staff, Tiff (top left), who has a prolific hair stylist background. Having gone mobile for a few years, Tiff missed the hair salon atmosphere and decided to join the Le Riché team. Tiff specialises in colour - some of her recent work can be seen in the images below. Moving into our second year we have some additional opening times: on Sundays we are open 10am-4pm and open til 7pm on Thursday and Friday. In celebration of Le Riché’s second anniversary we are running two brilliant offers. Both offers run until 30th September 2017. To redeem these offers, just quote, “The Felixstowe Magazine.”

OFFERS ONE - 30% off colour with Tiff for all customers. TWO - For existing customers, refer a friend and you both get 20% off. *excludes dry cuts or blow dry

Once again, we’d like to thank you all for being part of our first couple of years. We look forward to seeing you again and continuing to give you the best salon experience on the high street.

Local sculptor Paul Richardson Have you ever wondered who made that fantastic seagull sculpture in the Felistowe Library? Well, here he is... Mr. Paul Richardson. Paul is well known for his public art with large scale figures. His birds and animals take on characters of their own and perhaps none more so than the ten larger-than-life seagulls in Felixstowe library (1st image). When the libary was refurbished Paul was asked to create a piece to reflect the town and he wanted to make something to take people out of their everyday life for a moment, to capture the imagination in the way you can be transported by a book. Here, in a corner of the library, you are taken to the seashore where, perched on rigging against blues skies, ten seagulls call for attention and scavenge for tidbits. As luck would have it, at the time it was installed there were ten members of staff who adopted the piece as their own and each indentified with a particular bird according to the character it had! Paul’s most recent figure, Doctor Foster of Gloucester (2nd image) shares that same brand of humour. He was created for the ‘Art for Cure’ exhibition at Glenham Hall and is now on display at ‘The Sculpture Park’ in Farnham, Surrey. Sheltering under a Mary Poppins-like umbrella, carrying his Doctor’s bag embossed with an “F”, Doctor Foster has quite literally sprung to life from the children’s rhyme. Born in 1967, Paul’s career over the last 25 years has been wide ranging. He has created a significant body of public art and was nominated a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Commerce and Industry. Paul originally studied graphics near his home in Essex and then went on to take a degree in painting in Birmingham. It wasn’t long though before he found his way into the sculpture department where his passion for sculpture developed, but Paul had begun constructing things long before he went to art college. As a child he would hunt through local dumps and uncover old things and build with them. “One day I fould a left mannequin leg and was really annoyed because there wasn’t a right one and I wanted to make a figure. Weirdly a few weeks later I found another left leg.” Today, surrounded by nature in Middleton where Paul lives and works, another theme has taken hold - “One day I picked up a leaf skeleton and was blown away by its beauty.” The result was the vast metal fretwork of a Sycamore Seed (3rd image) tilted skywards as if just alighting on the ground. Paul’s ‘Fallen Leaf’ (4th image) and ‘Leaf Sphere’ (5th image) draw on the same inspiration from nature’s cycle of decay and new growth. Created from mild steel just like the figures, these new pieces have exquisite patterns and a lightness you don’t usually associate with metal. The new collection as a whole is a feat of engineering as he explores nature’s building blocks, the balance of symmetry and asymmetry, chaos and order. www.steelsculptures.co.uk www.gardensteelsculptures.co.uk This article was sponsored by Kerseys Solicitors www.kerseys.co.uk. Beach Bonkers Felixstowe Beach is full of fabulous treasures for you to uncover. All you need to do as a beachcomber to find them is walk slowly, or even sit down, and keep your eyes peeled! This is Felixstowe fun for all ages and every single item you find on the beach has a story to tell. After any high tide you can find natural treasures in the strand line.

“Get to know your beach with this brilliant local group”

A short walk should reveal at least ten different shells. One of these might be a limpet shell. The teeth of a limpet are found on its tongue and they use them to scrape the algae off the rocks where they live. Scientists have declared that limpet teeth are the strongest natural substance on the planet.

Empty egg cases include those of skates or rays known as “mermaid’s purses”. Eggs laid by whelks resemble a bundle of Rice Krispies and the first few that hatch out eat all their siblings! Driftwood washed up on the beach may be full of perfectly round holes. These are the tunnels of a shipworm which bores its way through the wood and can destroy an entire wooden boat. And as the tide goes out you might see the glint of gorgeous sea glass glittering in the sand – Suffolk’s shingle stones smooth the broken glass until it resembles frosted jewels. The stones hold and hide treasures too – some of them are even treasures themselves! Felixstowe Beach is a fantastic place to find fossils including sharks’ teeth and, just occasionally if you’re very lucky, a mammoth’s tooth! As hard as it is to believe, eighty million-year-old fossil sea sponges are a wonderful find on Felixstowe beach. I set up Beach Bonkers to share the excitement of beachcombing. With two high tides every single day you never know what treasure you will find, but you will always find something. Join Beach Bonkers on a beachcomb to learn the best places to look on the beach and identify your finds. If you can’t get to the beach I can bring a tableful of beach treasures for you to handle and explore. I also have a portable “mini-beach” with beachcombing treasures hidden in it for you to uncover. There are beachcombing walks and other events all through the summer and on into the autumn. Check online for a full listing at: www.beachbonkers.org.uk or call 07512 557200.
