Note from the Editor

Welcome to the January 2016 edition of The Felixstowe Magazine Can you believe we’re into another year? New Year is a great time to reflect on the twelve months just gone and make plans for the up-and-coming months.

Time isn’t stopping for anyone so I hope you get a chance to write down your immediate and long-term goals - making a list of all those things you meant to do, the things you really should have done, the things you held off til later and expecially all the things you’d love to do. Stick your list to the fridge and see how many you can tick off! I’ve made a little list already and there’s a couple of things you’ll hear about sometime soon (so watch this space). In the pages ahead of you, you’ll hopefully find some useful tips to launch you into 2016, whether it’s to get your health on the right path (page 7 and 14), put some well-needed organisation in your home (page 6) or indeed having a story about a dream made into a reality, to motivate you to set a goal that might be a little outside your comfort zone (page13). If you get this edition through your door before New Year’s Eve, have a great celebration; if you get it afterwards then I hope you have recovered! Here’s to an incredible 2016!! Felixstowe Book Festival and Felixstowe Library present

Harry Potter Book Night! Do you dream of playing quidditch, concocting potions and shopping in Diagon Alley? Are you awaiting the day a special letter will arrive welcoming you to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Then come join us to celebrate all things Harry Potter on Thursday 4th February! The train leaves Platform 9¾ (aka Felixstowe Library) at 6pm and there will then commence an evening of storytelling and magical activities as we celebrate everybody’s favourite boy wizard. Have a go at making potions, be sorted into a house and choose a wand (or

maybe it will choose you), make some traditional wizarding refreshments and much, much more. We’ll be joined by characters from the books and you are invited to wear your best robes for the occasion. This is the second year that Bloomsbury Publishers have invited groups to hold Harry Potter Book Night Celebrations and this year your local Book Festival and Library were determined not to miss out on the fun! We will be transforming the library and opening it especially for this event. Tickets are available from Felixstowe Library and cost £5 with a discounted price of £4 per ticket if you purchase more than one at the same time. The event will run from 6-8pm and is recommended for ages 7+ with all children accompanied by an adult (not required to have a ticket themselves and we will allow entry to muggles). Local Business Some tips from local cleaning company Maid2Clean...

Out With the Old, in With the New “Oosouji” is the name of an annual ritual in Japan - its literal translation is “big cleaning.” At the end of every year, usually New Year’s Eve for many families, Japanese homes are meticulously cleaned in an effort to drive out any impure influences that may have taken up residence during the previous year – to start the next year with a fresh clean home, free of clutter and welcome the gods with respect.

While we may ignore or disregard the symbolism behind this age-old custom, the end result (ie. a clean and uncluttered house), is something I’m sure we all strive for. I am striving constantly but with three dogs, I am fighting a losing battle! If you can’t face it on New Year’s Eve you could always push it back a bit and combine it with taking down the tree and decorations! Some hints and tips to help you get 2016 off to a good start, the Japanese way!

• Got One, Toss Two – cut the ties to old, worn or unused items and for every new item received, toss two out! You can recycle or donate but whatever you do don’t just add to the bookshelf/wardrobe or toy box, make space first. • Mail Box Challenge – we probably all have a stack of Amazon and other boxes from the online delivery extravaganza we undertook. Take at least one and fill it with as many old items as you can to donate to a local charity – how about www.basic.org.uk

Foot trouble?

• Sort before you stow – bin the Christmas decorations that didn’t quite make it through the trauma of your dog or child running into it, roll the lights around a kitchen roll to make life easier next year and finally place all unused Christmas cards and paper with your decorations so you see them before you go out and buy another bumper pack for this Christmas! • Create a toy library – some toys have a really long shelf life and you won’t want to throw them away. Use one of your Amazon boxes and fill it with some of these. Put it away and add a note in your phone to bring it out again in a month or two. The kids will love seeing their ‘old toys’ again and you will have saved space and money!!

Just a few ideas to help you through the mess and clutter created through all the fun...hope it helps! If you need help staying on top of the housework, please call 0800 878 6388 and a Maid2Clean can give you a hand. Have a Happy Oosouji and a Happy and Clean 2016! Sue, Maid2Clean (Suffolk) Ltd

Getting you in shape for 2016...

Let Your Inner Glow Shine Through! by Dawn Quantrill

With the arrival of a new year let’s celebrate the start of a new chapter, a time to make changes. Have you, like so many people at this time of year, promised yourself you will start going to the gym every day and considered a crash diet of lettuce and water? However tempting, we know that a quick fix is not the answer - after the first couple of weeks we soon get bored of plodding along on the treadmill at the gym. A crash diet always leads to us craving all the wrong foods and very soon we fall off the wagon and the cycle begins again! If that sounds familiar, if you’re fed up repeating the same old cycle - the good news is, there is another way! At Glow, the club prides itself on being different, it’s not just a fitness class, it’s not just a slimming club where you weigh and go! At Glow you get it all! At every class you are guaranteed motivation, support and lots of fun! Healthy does not have to be dull and boring! Although many of us want to lose weight after Christmas, if we want to keep it off it’s important to eat a healthy, balanced diet that becomes a lifestyle choice not just a short term fix. As well as looking great, we also need to ensure we nourish our bodies inside as well as out.

Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Cut-Outs Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best...food!

Bola de Carne from Portugual

Bola de Carne, or Meat Bread, is a very traditional and popular dish in Portuguese cuisine. It combines all those winter favourites: different kinds of meat, along with some melted cheese, cooked inside a perfectly textured and crispy bread. This is a simple and easy dish to make that is perfect for guests or any occasion where you’re in need of a hearty and delicious dish. Keep mixing this up till a lovely batter is formed.

Ingredients: 4 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 cups whole milk 1 and 3/4 cup olive oil 6 eggs 2 cups of shredded (or pulled) pork or beef 2 cups shredded cheese

Spread half of the batter on a rectangular 8 x 12 inch pan. Add a layer of the the shredded meat and the rest of the cheese.

Add the rest of the batter on top of the meat and cheese.

Method: In a mixer, beat the eggs, milk, and olive oil for about one minute on medium speed.

Add the flour and baking powder, and beat for another two minutes. Add one cup of the shredded cheese to the mixer.

The Stables Coffee Shop & Sandwich Bar

Bake in a pre-heated at 370 degrees fahrenheit for approximately 45 – 60 minutes until the outside is a lovely golden brown colour.

Remove your meat bread from the oven and place on a serving platter. Allow it cool for about ten minutes then slice into pieces and serve.

The next time you make this dish, try adding some spices to warm your tummy during the winter months.

Mystery Shopper

Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

Slimming World and Sausage Shop Well, we’ve all enjoyed the holiday season, eaten the chocolate out of the advent calendar; attended at least two work’s meals out and a shared lunch in the office…Christmas dinner…glass of bubbly at New Year’s. I’m pretty sure we all feel a bit jaded by now, no matter how healthily we try to live most of the year. Being a woman of a ‘particular age’ I can assure you that I’ve made plenty of New Year’s resolutions and tried pretty much every diet out there from the Atkins to the 5:2. This year I took a bite of the ‘Reality Sandwich’ and acknowledged that the most sensible and most sustainable eating plan I’ve ever tried was Slimming World. I maintained a healthy weight for over ten years and only gained weight again when I lost sight of the common sense outlined within the eating plan. So off I toddled to Kate May’s group on Monday evenings at the Trimley Sports and Social Club with my gal pal/lovely stepdaughter. We’ve had a warm welcome and found huge support in a variety of ways, including personal, online and through Facebook.

My understanding is that each Slimming World consultant runs their individual business; there are several groups in the Felixstowe area, and I’ve heard good reports about a number of the groups. There is plenty of food you would never think of as ‘diet food’ which you can eat freely and it

THE FELIXSTOWE TOWN CRIER UPDATES Felixstowe Town and Around News

Felixstowe Family History Society

The town centre is now awash with coloured lights following the “switch on” on the 29th November. Huge thanks must go to the Felixstowe Lions for all their hard work in maintaining, improving and erecting the lights every year and it is one of the highlights of the Mayor’s diary to perform the switch on ceremony. Despite a fuse blowing on the Christmas tree lights – the whole event was great and it was good to see so many people on the Triangle. I spent three hours walking around the Town and stalls and really enjoyed the good humour and cheer that abounded. Thanks to everyone who took part in any way with the event. December is here and I start the list of Christmas visits to the residential/nursing homes around the Town as well as attending Carol Services and concerts. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone and sharing some Christmas cheer Christmas Day will see me at the Christmas Dip organised by St. Elizabeth Hospice and now a firm annual event – but I will not be “dipping” as did last year’s Mayor and the Town Clerk. I shall just watch. I then visit the Hospital to wish all the patients a Happy Christmas and then share lunch with the Salvation Army and its guests. I must mention Remembrance Sunday, which again saw hundreds of people gathering at the War Memorial to take part in the short service there. This year I was so impressed with the large number of young people taking part from the Cadet units to the Academy. It bodes well for the future that young people are so involved. I have spent a lot of time in the company of young people during November. The laying-up lunch at the Sailing Club where the young people received their certificates and awards for all their hard work, the students at the International College who staged my Charity Concert where awareness was raised of the excellent education on offer there as well as raising £1000 for my charities. The Felixstowe Youth Forum well attended by students from our primary schools who agreed once again to assist in Fairtrade fortnight next year and attending a concert at the Academy, which once again showcased what talent we have in Felixstowe. I was invited to cut the ribbon to re-open the refurbished Grosvenor – which is great and worth a visit, enjoyed a performance of the White Gables choir and attended the Licensing of the new Vicar at St. John’s Andrew Dotchin – who gives a lovely hug! Much has been written and spoken about Phil Hadwen whose sudden death shocked everyone. We are all aware of his massive contribution to the life of Felixstowe in so many ways and there will probably never be anyone of his calibre in the future. His funeral service was a true celebration of his fantastic life. It was a privilege to have known him. May I wish you all a Happy New Year in 2016. Doreen Savage.

If you wish to start or further your family history research now that the colder weather is here why not come and use our research room ‘The Tree House’, Maidstone Road, Felixstowe IP11 9ED (Felixstowe Academy, old entrance). We have a large collection of books and microfiche and the Society now has a subscription to ‘The Genealogist’ so if you haven’t used this website before you can use it at ‘The Tree House’ for free. Opening times are Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am-12 noon, Wednesdays 2pm-4pm and the 3rd Wednesday of every month 7.30pm-9.30pm. If you would like to join the Society, single membership is £12 or joint membership is £16 (if you live at the same address). You can join at The Tree House or at our speaker meetings which are held at Broadway House, Orwell Road IP11 7DD on the 2nd Wednesday of most months which are open to all. Admission is free to members and £1 for non-members. For details of the next talk see this magazine’s What’s On page. The year’s full programme is available on our website www.itgen.co.uk/ffhs

Our Christmas demonstration by Dulcie Lofting from King’s Lynn offered something for everyone, beginners as well as more advanced arrangers. Her theme was ‘The Spirit of Christmas’ and it didn’t disappoint. Dulcie’s amazing range of garden foliage was well conditioned and her flowers beautiful. She began with two simple arrangements to inspire beginners. One used a foam ring covered in eucalyptus dotted with very short maroon roses. Dried moss covered any exposed foam. For Christmas glitter a sparkling cone was placed in the centre. Another simple arrangement used woven sticks interlaced with bear grass bundles and filled with purple lisianthus and tiny bright red roses. The most unusual arrangement used NO flowers, just textured foliage, cinnamon sticks, lotus heads, chillies dried orange and apple segments and long cones, proving you did not need expensive flowers for an interesting, colourful Christmas arrangement. Three more stunning arrangements using lilies, roses, anthuriums, and orchids and amaryllis completed the demonstration. Throughout, Dulcie read Christmas poetry and gave lots of tips and ideas to help us create our own beautiful Christmas arrangements. Another very enjoyable evening was had by all, culminating in warm mince pies with our teas and coffees. Our next meeting is the AGM followed by a social evening. I do hope you will join us for some fun at 7.30pm on Thursday 21 January 2016 at the Old Felixstowe Community Centre, Ferry Lane, IP11 9NB. For more information please call me on 01394 282 468. Lioness Club of Felixstowe Christmas came early for the Lionesses, when we all made a return visit to Perrywood Garden Centre; the decorations and gifts for sale in the shop were amazing, and some of us spent far too much money on presents for our children and grandchildren! Thanks to the help of the restaurant staff, fourteen people were able to sit down and enjoy lunch together. We were in similar jolly mood when we enjoyed a special Christmas meal, this time at the Holiday Inn Orwell. Some members are going to see Steeleye Span at Bury St. Edmunds, and we also have our final get-together for December in a member’s house to look forward to. On the fundraising side, we were pleased to have two stalls at Light-Up Day, which raised a substantial amount of money for the St. Elizabeth Hospice. We thank all those who supported our chocolate tombola and cake stall, and hope that you will support us again in 2016 when fundraising events will include a Chocolate Bingo evening, a Quiz night and a Clairvoyant Evening. Finally, we are extremely pleased that two more people, Kay and Sandy, will soon be inducted into the Lioness Club, bringing our numbers up to sixteen. Onwards and upwards! For details of events and information about Lionesses, please email Val: vijinks880@hotmail.com Jennie Roome

Felixstowe Swimming Club A big well done to our 39 swimmers who attended the Deben Open Meeting in November. They achieved 107 personal best times from 148 swims and individually 10 Gold, 13 Silver and 17 Bronze medals were won for their excellent performance. Also most of our swimmers either achieved or bettered times needed to compete in the County Championships in February next year. It’s great to see that all the hard work and effort that the swimmers put in during training is paying off. Our Swim Director, Jason Flower, was especially proud of the way that the swimmers performed and represented the club at the event. A big thank you to all the coaches and team managers who gave their time to help the swimmers over the long weekend and special thanks to Toby who coached his first open meet for us and for whom we had lots of very positive comments from parents, swimmers and officials. On Saturday 28th November, 19 of our swimmers headed to Newmarket to represent Felixstowe in the B final of the winter league. Competition was fierce throughout the final and it was one of the most exciting finals we have been involved in for a while. Our swimmers achieved 18 personal best times during the evening as they won 16 of the races, 2 of these being races where jokers were played on Charlotte Smith in the 50 fly and Thomas Boyt in the 50 back, this meant that they won the maximum double points available. The fantastic swims put in by all of our swimmers won us 2nd place in the final only 11 points behind the eventual winners but a huge 60 points ahead of the team in 3rd place. Local Law More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor

Now that I’m settled in the commercial department I thought I would use this month’s update to report on some of the matters that I get the opportunity to deal with here at Jackamans. On behalf of everyone at Jackamans, I’d like to wish you all a very happy new year. I can’t believe that this time last year I was preparing to leave the Felixstowe private client department, to experience life as a residential conveyancer in Ipswich for six months before working with the Diss commercial team up to Christmas. The time has come to start thinking about which department I would like to qualify into, and unfortunately my answer is far from simple – all of them! I have really enjoyed spending time in all of my chosen seats and have learnt so much over the past eighteen months. Each department has brought its own challenges and highlights; be it troublesome hedges and ditches, purchases at auction thwarted by the discovery of undeclared tenancies, or tracking down elusive property owners who, often unknowingly, hold the key to allowing

access to a new development. What’s more, I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing people in each of our offices who have never failed to make me feel welcome and to assist me with my training. I’ve certainly been able to experience a wide variety of matters, and I am confident that my experiences in each department will continue to be of use to me after I qualify as a fully-fledged solicitor in August, if all goes to plan. It has been extremely difficult to decide which line of work to go into, but decide I must, and I will therefore be returning to the Felixstowe private client team this month with a view to confirming that this is the department for me. No doubt I will see some of you in the office shortly! Jackamans Solicitors 01394 279636 www.jackamans.co.uk

A little news from Felixstowe-raised lad in UKs Big Apple...

Simon Mayhew Homegrown boy, Simon Mayhew has gone from strength to strength in his career up in London, from acting in theatre productions, to now working in an agency representing the likes of Sam Bailey from the XFactor. Though doing a brilliant job in the city, Simon always says how much his upbringing in Felixstowe has helped him along. Here he is to tell us a bit about his journey.

Simon with the lovely Sam Bailey...

the ever popular Joanna Lumley...

Where did you live in Felixstowe and when did you move up to London?

I used to live in Maidstone Road next to Orwell High. When I was in Felixstowe, I was always involved with local theatre and did many shows at The Spa Pavilion with local amateur dramatics groups and dance schools. I decided that I wanted to be on stage and London was the only place where I could receive the necessary training. I just knew I wanted more so jumped into the deep end and at eighteen years old, I moved to London to study at a theatre school called, Millennium. After my years of performing the natural progression took me down the path of becoming an agent. What kind of people do you act as an agent for?

I represent celebrities and musical theatre clients. I currently represent X Factor Winner, Sam Bailey, Andy Abraham (who will be performing at The Regent in pantomime this year), Lloyd Daniels who just played Joseph on tour. I also have clients in Matilda, Cats, Mamma Mia, Dreamboats and Miniskirts, We Will Rock You and The Glenn Miller Story.

and with Corrie star, Tina O’Brien...

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

I would like to have bought a house and have added more celebrities to my list that would like to do musical theatre. However, my family still live in Felixstowe, so I will always come back home to see everyone. Our friends at BASIC tell us you’re a patron of their charity. What motivated you to support them so intimately and what do you do for them?

My mum worked closely with Graham the founder and I was so inspired by his dedication and hard work for the community. Graham helped my mum so much that I jumped at the chance when I could help. I am joined as a patron with friend, Tina O’Brien who has just gone back to Coronation Street. She was also thrilled to help when I asked. Being a young lad from Felixstowe, do you have any wise words to tell our younger readers to help them along their career journey and goals for their future?

You only live once, so grab every opportunity you can. Follow your gut and your instincts and just go for it! You won’t know if you can swim, unless you jump into the deep end. Please follow Simon at @simonmayhew1 and his agency at @oxfordadams for all exciting news.

Local Dancing Fancy starting a new hobby with dancing? Here’s Jackie from the Marwyn School of Dancing...

Marwyn School of Dancing

Marwyn School of Dancing is a small friendly school, established in 1946 in Felixstowe, and now with branches in both Felixstowe and Ipswich. The School offers dancing lessons in Ballet and Tap in Felixstowe, and additionally Modern and Acrobatic Dance in Ipswich.

The School teaches the United Teachers of Dance (UTD) syllabus in Ballet and Tap from the age of 3, and Modern from the age of 5. Examinations are held regularly, although it is not compulsory for pupils to take them. The School also works towards an annual show, performed at a local theatre. The show alternates between the Ipswich and Felixstowe Schools each year. Pupils have the opportunity to demonstrate their work in public, and the School donates all show profits to Clic Sargent Cancer Care for children and their families in this area. So far over £40,000 has been raised and donated by the School.

This year, Marwyn has been presented with several Awards of Excellence by the UTD in recognition of the high standard

Turners

of teaching and high exam results achieved. Many pupils have achieved Honours in their marks this year. Classes are held at both the Scout Hut, Bath Road, Felixstowe, and at The Scout Hut, Foxhall Road, Ipswich, both of which have a sprung floor. We also use a pianist for some classes. Classes are held after school Mondays to Fridays in Felixstowe, and Tuesdays to Saturdays in Ipswich.

In Felixstowe, we also teach adult ballet and tap classes, as a fun way for mums and grandmums (and dads) to stay fit and learn some dance. They have even named themselves the ‘Silver Swans’. Classes are held on Thursday mornings at 10am and Tuesdays at 7pm in Bath Road. For further information or to come and join us, please contact our Principal: Jackie Bloomfield, on 01394 272851.

Sponsored Page It’s amazing how many artists there are in Felixstowe. To help showcase them, Kerseys Solicitors have kindly sponsored this page...

Local Glass Artist

Naomi Brangwyn

How long have you lived in Felixstowe and what’s your favourite thing about it? I’ve lived here for 14 years. I love that shopping takes ages here because I always see someone I know and stop for a chat such a friendly community. How did you get into glass art? Although I have an art school background and have dabbled in various forms throughout my life, I discovered glass work when I moved to Felixstowe in 2001. I was looking for an evening class and found Stained Glass workshops.

What inspires you? I say my work is ‘a unique mix of glass, lead and nature’. The glass tells me what it needs to be, a sunset, a winter sea, rushes by a river, poppies. I let the glass do the work, there’s no ‘horrid’ glass. Tell us about your technique… I occasionally do leaded work. This is where the pieces of glass slot into strips of lead, as we see in church windows and Victorian windows and doors. However, I mostly follow the Tiffany technique, which uses copper foil around the edges of the glass shapes and solder is then melted onto the copper to create a strong lead seam. I find this method is more versatile.

From the earliest days I began to break all the rules of stained glass. I introduce other materials. I layer the glass and I often leave gaps. Above all, much of my work is designed to be hung on a plain wall in the same way as we treat paintings. Although it’s called stained glass, my style is quite unique and distinctive.

Do you have any upcoming exhibitions? My art is my full time job and I’m very pleased to have a created a varied life. My work is continuously held in art galleries in Suffolk, Norfolk and beyond.

I have a steady flow of commissioned work, hanging panels for walls or windows, windows and doors (these are fitted inside against the existing glass so you keep the weather out but get to enjoy the art). In 2016 I’ll be exhibiting in The Quay Gallery at Snape Maltings and also in June my studio will be open to visitors as part of Suffolk Open Studios. In August I’ll be joining a group of artists in The Court at Sutton Hoo for a two-week exhibition, Art on the Prom in September and then start work for Xmas again.

Any projects you’re particularly proud of? In the past I’ve been commissioned to create a series of memorial panels in a church, been asked to incorporate a baby’s ashes, I’ve made wedding presents, and panels to block out ugly views. A customer recently wrote, “Thank you for the vision you put in your work, it gives enjoyment to so many”. I couldn’t ask for a greater compliment. Any claims to fame? Across many venues, over some eight years, I’ve taught glass to over five-hundred people. Some just came for a taster day but others continue for years. The late Ray Peace taught me and I feel a duty to teach others. Someone must pass on the baton or the craft of Stained Glass will die. I will run a weekend course at Assington Mill in April. This is in addition to the Saturday workshops held once a month in my studio. How can readers contact you? www.naomibrangwyn.co.uk

Local Lad Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

Happy New….waaaaahhh!

Isn’t New Year a funny time? Some folk party like there’s no tomorrow and with gay abandon and then there’s the overemotional, mawkish types like yours truly who can’t wish anyone a Happy New Year without blubbing like Keith Brymer (The Great Pottery Throw Down) after he’s fondled a Pinch Pot lovingly scribed in Sgraffito detailing.

I don’t know what comes over me on New Year’s Eve. Someone has only to suggest that they’re preparing themselves for a verse or two of ‘Auld Lang Syne’, or ‘I’m Going to Party Like it’s 1999’ (I have a Daniel O’Donnell cover of the latter by the way) and I’m reaching for the Handy Andies.

So I try and play down the whole New Year’s Eve thing these days and plump for a night in with a mug of Horlicks watching the entire boxset of ‘Snog, Marry, Avoid’ in my jim-jams and Jeremy Corbyn caricature slippers. Who says I’m not a wild thing? And why does everyone who is out on the evening of the last day of the year, dress like it’s June? It’s perishing out there guys; you’ll catch your death. And as for the daft soand-sos who think it necessary to swim in the sea wearing nothing but a smile as the clock strikes twelve…well you’re alone, I’m keeping my birthmark shaped like Ann Widdecombe well and truly hidden beneath a pair of thermal long-johns thank you very much.

But there are those who take New Year very seriously indeed, and I’m not talking about purchasing wholesale quantities of tissues, anti-bacterial hand gel and Imodium…actually it has just occurred to me what a fitting name Nora Virus would be for one of Cinderella’s ugly sisters!! No, what I’m talking about are those who write out their personal development plan for the year, exercise regime and of the course, the obligatory resolutions. How annoying are they? And will they keep to them? Hardly, we’d have more of a chance of Peter Andre turning down a photo opportunity. However, I do wish you all the best of luck in your New Year’s resolutions!

But, shush, shush….the countdown to midnight is about to start! Shhhh…SHHHH!!! Oh, and have a happy, healthy and loving New Year dear reader…….oh no, there I go, quick pass me a Kleenex! @deanwales

Local Charity & Their News

BASIC Life Charity

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe-based BASIC, an independent Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. If it’s not 2016 by the time you read this mag, it soon will be, so BASIC would like to wish all our customers and staff the most amazing HAPPY NEW YEAR!

and enable people to succeed in their charitable aims.

On 24th January we’ll be having our own celebration as BASIC celebrate 16 years as a registered charity.

From that small shop on Cavendish Park we’ve grown and now have our town centre shop in Hamilton Road, our Walton shop and our sorting and distributing depot.

We’d like to thank you all for donating, buying and being the fantastic community which makes Felixstowe, Walton and the Trimley villages surely one of the nicest places to live.

From what was a very simple idea all those years ago we’re pleased and astounded to see how we’ve grown.

Many people will remember Angela managing the little shop next to Safeway (now Morrison’s) at the start. From day one we were taken aback by the generosity of local people and it’s still the case today. Whether it’s contributing to our food bank, donating brilliant items or searching for and buying bargains – the community have taken us to their heart and we’re so grateful for that. Over the years we’ve been fortunate enough to be able to donate to causes in just about every area of local life and we are so pleased that we have been able to encourage

We have also been able to step in at very short notice to assist local individuals in their time of greatest need. We know your continued generosity has actually changed lives, in a very real sense and has restored many people’s faith in mankind.

Our overall aim from the start has been to make Felixstowe and the surrounding villages a place where we all work together to make life as good as it can possibly be. This can mean ‘depositing’ into the goodwill by donating goods, buying goods and encouraging our growth.

It can equally mean ‘withdrawing’ by making use of our food bank or requesting assistance when those hard times come. So whether you’re in a position of ‘depositing’ or ‘withdrawing’ right now, we know that we can work together to meet our goals. Thank you so much for being part of our journey so far.

We’ve really only just begun and we’re excited about the future - so let’s make 2016 the best year yet and build our town and villages into an even stronger community! Happy New Year!
