At the heart of the community SEPTEMBER 2017 - FREE MONTHLY BUSINESS DIRECTORY AND COMMUNITY NEWS FOR FELIXSTOWE & VILLAGES

Welcome to September... With exams done, results gotten, a beautiful Summer (still lingering at the time of writing) and a brand-new term ahead, The Felixstowe Magazine team would like to wish all our Felixstowe youth a great start to the new academic year! We have some lovely content this month including the incredible work of Rob Lummis’ charitable organisation, which has raised almost £4000 to support local charities and volunteers in Felixstowe this past year (page 4). We also have the usual wit and humour by our lovely local lad, Dean Wales, along with Doreen’s informative take on the past couple of months.

BASIC Life Charitv Charity Last month we promised to share a new idea we’ve had which we think will appeal to a lot of Felixstowe folk of all ages. We’ve been in touch with the council and Mayor Nick Barber and we’ve been promised a plot of land which we want to call ‘The BASIC Community Farm’. OK it won’t be a farm as such but it’ll be an allotment [or two combined] which we want to invite residents of the Felixstowe, Walton and Trimley villages to join. We’re really at the early stages of the idea but we know we’re going to need one or two experienced gardeners to help with the day to day management – so if you or somebody you know might be perfect for the role please ask them to get in touch! The overall idea is that we’ll have a membership scheme which will allow members to use the plot whenever they want and to put in however much [or little] effort they want. We know how hard it is to maintain a plot on your own so if we all work together we should be able to produce some brilliant crops and flowers! And at the same time we’ll produce a new community! We’re hoping that some of the fruit and vegetables grown can be used at our

“A regular update from this brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support” Pop-up shops – so it really will be the community helping the community – which is what we love so much! Speaking of fruit and vegetables, a massive thank you to Nacton Farm and Goslings Farm shop for their amazing contributions during August. This was the first time they had contributed and we were delighted to pass on the produce. Please support those who are helping us to make our community better. These include Anchor Bakery, The Bread Shop, Tesco, Morrisons and now the two organisations mentioned above. Don’t forget we’re still selling books at three for £1 at both of our shops - it doesn’t matter if they are hardbacks or paperbacks - it’s the same rate for all! Have a great September!

Rob Lummis Spiritual Awareness Centre My Awareness Centre is a non-profit organisation, which I set up 3 years ago to provide succour to victims and the family of victims of cancer. The centre holds vibrant fairs on the last Friday of every month. All funds made by the entrance fee go to good local causes and charities, which are chosen by the people who attend the Centre. As always, the cheque presentation event was electric, surrounded by wonderful energies, which people commented on all through the evening. We handed over a cheque of £1200 to The East Suffolk Association for the Blind (The Felixstowe sector) and £100 to Pam and Heather for their volunteer work in Guyana. These astonishing local ladies took medical equipment, blankets, recycled wheel chairs and many more needed items to Guyana. Being qualified state registered nurses with basic resources, Pam and Heather also worked with the children and adults in the hospital. Both such worthwhile causes, along with the support that I receive with the Mind, Body & Spirit fairs, for which 80% of the funds for into the pot, I’m feeling proud of the support that the public give so freely.

“Update of the charitable donations by Rob Lummis and his Spiritual Awareness Centre” Since setting up the centre 3 years ago in October, we have donated £3900 to local good causes and charities. Above is a photo of the cheque presentation. I’d like the public in Felixstowe to know that this is their Awareness Centre and you all have shown how much this means to you, in so many ways, so I say a great big thank you to all. For more information or to get involved, email Rob at: robert.lummis@ntlworld.com Facebook: Rob’s Awareness Centre The Awareness Centre is open on the first Friday of the month and includes a vibrant fair with stalls, a spiritual healer, card readers, music by up and coming singer/song writers, all of whom donate their time.

Between a Rock and a Hardware Shop I need to get it off my chest that I am forced to make the occasional uncharacteristic journey to the local hardware store (well it makes a change from Fortnum & Mason) for items like an Osbourne & Little wallpaper sample or a tube of UHU – that’s the glue by the way and not one of my informal greetings! Although I don’t particularly relish the notion of going, once you step inside, the aroma of ironmongery has something about it that has the ability to excite a person going about their visit to B&Q… or is that just me? You must know what I mean, the heady mix of wooden garden furniture, fertiliser and oily tools.

“Random ramblings by our local lad” cold), or Clair de Lune. That’s fine but then they try them all again, usually 5 or 6 times. Okay it’s getting annoying now. Then it happens. They find the Disney doorbell, the one that is stuck on ‘Let it Go’! Aaaaaaghhhhhhh!!

This wall of torture is a plonker magnet. It has the same effect on the wally-segment of society as a four day old tuna sandwich has on bluebottles.

Then there’s the newly-weds spat. They enter the store, hand-in-hand, smiling and blowing kisses at each other (bleeughh!) and wander over to the lamp section. It starts off calm, with lovely exchanges like, “You choose baby,” “No you choose one darling.” But, what they’re forgetting is there’s a fundamental biological difference between men and women, especially when lampshades (oh and headboards and dare I risk saying driving) are concerned. So in no time at all their inaugural row has begun over why it should be a crystal-drop over a Man United paper globe.

There you are contemplating critical matters like whether it’s classier to have ‘flock’, ‘woodchip’ or ‘Anaglypta’ or whether it’s easier to wipe off a smoothie/blender incident on eggshell or gloss and it begins. It’s not too bad to start with as it typically opens with an understated ‘bing bong’. Then another. But then it progresses to a rendition of Green Sleeves (that was a nickname of a lad at school but I won’t go into why, but I will add he always had a

And there’s the geezer – we all know one – who swans in wearing all the gear. Dungarees, steel toe-cap boots (with acid proof soles), leather pinafore, impenetrable gauntlets, tool-belt (populated with every tool under the sun and a Yorkie bar) and safety glasses. He strolls around with a blue-print in his mitts and you think, “Blimey this guy means business”. You gawp at him in awe as he saunters over to the checkout with a PrittStick and a Minions bath mat.

However, as with anything that offers a small amount of joy, there is always the odd distraction. How about this as a starter? Why do DIY shops insist on wiring up a board of doorbells? Loads of them. All in one place.

Felixstowe town and around The sky outside is dark and the weather gloomy at the time of writing – not at all what the beginning of August should be like! However, there has been some glorious weather that has been great for the many events that have been taking place in the town during the past month. The prelude to Carnival in July was the wonderful Last Night of the Proms concert held on the Events area. There were people as far as the eye could see all enjoying the music and it was a triumph and must become an annual event. The Carnival parade this year was, in my opinion, one of the best we have had for many years. It was certainly one of the biggest and was colourful and entertaining. I loved it. The stalls and music events again around the events area proved to be a great draw and the fireworks on the Sunday were also some of the best seen in years. The Port contributed a large sum of money in sponsorship this year and the firework display benefitted. Great credit to the volunteers associated with the Carnival committee for a weekend of wonderful entertainment. At the end of July the Pier opened to the public and wow, what a triumph that has been with members of the public. The Pier has been crammed with people and I have heard nothing but praise for it. Once the area in front of the Leisure Centre is completed that whole complex will be a great visitor destination in its own right. Congratulations to Stan Threadwell for giving the town a Pier of which we can be justifiably proud. The free open air cinema event also on the events area coincided with the opening of the Pier and attracted over 1000 people. The public had been asked to choose the films to be shown and these were Finding Nemo, The Goonies and Pirates of the Caribbean – the Curse of the Black Pearl. The Town Council’s

“Update from our local town councillor” Youth Forum elected to support this event with their £2000 annual budget and it is to be hoped this event will be repeated as it was undoubtedly very popular. I attended the official opening of the news joint Police/Fire Service HQ at the end of July. This new extended facility at the old Fire Station will provide modern and purpose-built accommodation for both public services and will be especially welcome by the local police force after the archaic facilities at the old Police Station. The CCTV system that has been housed at the top of the old building for years will now transfer over into a modern ground floor room in the new building and will provide the volunteers who operate the system with comfortable facilities in which to carry out their late night surveillance operations. I do hope that with the move the numbers of volunteers will increase for this role as numbers have fallen in recent times. Discussions as to the future of the old Police Station and the buildings behind will now start with the planners at the District and will, I imagine, eventually provide some much needed housing in the town. My moan about abandoned shopping seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Whilst shopping this week I saw goods left all over the store! Perhaps the culprits don’t read! Have a great rest of the summer – weather permitting. Doreen Savage
