Welcome to the September edition of The Felixstowe Magazine At the time of writing this, the Olympics were well under way and our British athletes have made us a very proud nation. Well done Team GB! Back home in The Stowe, you might not know this but I’m a painter, so I have an avid intrigue for Art on the Prom and all the aesthetic delights it brings! Be sure you don’t miss it on Sept 4th down on the seafront. This month’s cover is of last year’s Art on the Prom, by one of Felixstowe’s younger residents, Adem Atacocugu (aged 11). Beautiful shot Adem! Our monthly competition is back (p.3 below left) - this time the prize is courtesy of the lovely Nicki, new manager of the Hand in Hand in Trimley St Martin. Give it a go - you might just win a gorgeous meal for two! Wishing you all a great September.

Local Theatre

Surprises in Store at The Spa The Spa Pavilion Theatre is pushing the boat out with a packed Autumn line-up bolstered by some surprises.

Highlights include The Circus of Horrors on Tuesday 25th October – this spectacular show features an amazing amalgamation of bizarre, brave and beautiful acts all woven into an Alice in Horrorland-type story, driven by a mainly original soundscape and performed with a forked tongue firmly in each cheek! Annually the Circus of Horrors plays over 100 UK theatres. The show also played for 10 nights at London's O2. It also became the only circus ever to reach the finals of Britain’s Got Talent plus the first circus to perform in London's West End for over 100 years! Ray Anderson, Director for the Spa said, “This show is a very different one for us here at the Spa. Imagine if Quentin Tarantino had directed Cirque Du Soleil then you would be only half way there!” That’s not all though, also coming up earlier in October on Saturday 1st, after a successful SellOut Tour of 2015, Talents Of Britain is coming to Felixstowe. This show is even bigger and funnier for its 2016 Autumn Tour featuring top stars of variety, comedy, dance and music. Brought to the Spa by Howlin' Entertainments, they have crammed in the best talent from around the globe, and even thrown in a few household names to bring you a night of variety you won't see anywhere else. This is THE variety show which proves that the world really has got talent. On Saturday 22nd October the Spa have a show for the little ones to enjoy. Marty MacDonald’s Toy Machine - A

brand-new show featuring the voices of CBeebies’ Justin Fletcher and Nicole Davis as Pongo the Pig and Molly-Moo the Cow - from the team who brought you Marty MacDonald’s Farm!

“We have literally packed our Autumn season with some top entertainment,” Mr Anderson continued. “This is just a sample; we also have a fantastic fundraiser for Children in Need mid-November plus a strong September line-up.”

For full details of all shows now on sale go to www.felixstowespa.co.uk for performance dates and times or call into the Spa Box Office open every day from 11am-4pm or you can call them on 01394 284962. BASIC Life Charity

Since registering as an independent Charitable Trust in 2000, BASIC has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. September is upon us and it’s that time of year for back to school, starting those adult classes you always promised yourself and looking forward to those slightly more autumnal walks along the prom!

We’re continuing our campaign to stop food waste in our town and we’re delighted to say that Tesco have added us to the community groups they will be supporting.

So, if you need a slightly warmer coat, some last minute uniform items for the children or some tracksuit bottoms for your new badminton lessons, come and give us a visit!

We believe our idea is quite unique and we’ve received enquiries about the project from people in other towns – so we could be developing it further!

As our rather glorious summer draws to a close, it’s all change at BASIC as we rotate the stock in preparation for the new season.

Pop-Up Community shop

We’re so excited about the continued growth of our Community Pop-Up Shop, which is held at St.Edmund’s Church, Langer Road, 11am-12 noon each Tuesday.

In August we also received donations of premium vegetable products from our new friends and Felixstowe residents, Pete and Helen.

From the autumn we will be receiving excess items from their stores at Martlesham and Kesgrave and from next year the Metro stores, like our own in Hamilton Road, will be joining in.

In the meantime we’re adding more items to our St.Edmund’s shop with shoes, handbags and more clothes available each Tuesday. Our volunteers, who were joined by members of Walton 2nd Guides last month, do an amazing job and we’d like to say a big public ‘thank you’ to them.

Local Lad Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

Poke a What?

I’ve just become aware of Pokémon GO. You know, the ‘have to have’ game on mobile phones at the moment. Not because I’ve downloaded it or anything you understand, but because of the groups of people gathering outside my house and enthusiastically gesturing. Thankfully it was a neighbour who suggested that it was probably much more likely that these hordes of adolescents were trying to find a Squirtle and not, as we first thought, admiringly pointing at the enamelled budgies on our mantelpiece, magnificent though they are.

‘Trying to find a Squirtle?’ An imaginary cartoon character overlaid on reality by your mobile phone’s camera? Really? I struggle finding my reading glasses these days let alone walking around glued to the screen of my smartphone seeking a Pokemon thingy. Mind you, don’t get me wrong, I’m not averse to new technology; I love my smartphone. I’m sure I never use it to it’s full potential however, although I do have an app which compares the price of Ritz crackers across various supermarkets for me. It’s extremely useful when planning a little soirée. You know the kind of thing, an elegant gathering over a finger-buffet with a few friends and neighbours chatting over a slice of quiche and a vol au vent, glass of Babycham in one hand… a Kirstie Allsopp inspired centrepiece on the table, hand-crafted from discarded Princes

Shrimp Paste jars and adorned with tinsel.

But, you have to agree with me that some people are really daft with their mobile phones. As a starter, my dear old dad (sadly no longer with us) used to call me from his mobile, leave me a message that used to simply inform me that: ‘It’s only Dad.’ He’d then kill the call, and promptly switch off his phone rendering it impossible to call him back.

Then there’s the guy, that always seems to be on the train who insists on making himself appear important. He sits there in pinstripe trousers, red braces, floppy hairstyle (which he flicks out of his eyes before checking his reflection in train window…hey looking good). He presses his mobile against the side of his face (moisturised so it shines, eyebrows threaded to perfection) and speaks. The Kirton accent has miraculously transformed into ‘London Wideboy’. He uses all the sales lingo available to him in a voice so loud Audrey in the loo can hear. After five minutes the entire façade and his reputation is smashed by his phone ringing mid sentence!

Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Cut-Outs Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best... food!

Veggie Noodle Lasagna

This is a superb recipe for children to who love to cook, just be sure they’re supervised by a responsible adult. Ingredients

1lb shredded mozarella cheese 1lb cottage cheese 1 egg 1/3 cup parmesan cheese 12 lasagna noodles Spaghetti sauce Method

Boil the noodles until they’re soft but firm, then lay the noodles out to cool. Combine the cottage cheese and egg.

Spray a casserole pan with cooking spray, or brush with oil to prevent sticking. Cover the bottom of the dish with a thin layer of spaghetti sauce. Sprinkle some parmesan cheese over the sauce layer, then place a layer of noodles on top of the cheese. Cover this with another layer of sauce and sprinkle more parmesan cheese on top.

Now layer with a combination of equal amounts of mozarella cheese and cottage cheese.

Repeat these cheesy layers two more times. (You’re starting to get a picture of how cheesy this is right?!) Now you’ll need to test your tummy’s patience by allowing the veggie noodle lasagna to bake at 350 degrees for about 30 - 40 min. The top layer of cheese should be a beautiful golden brown. You can top with a bit of chopped parsley. Finally - get ready to tuck in!

Mystery Shopper

Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

Bombay Voted Best

I’ve always loved Bombay Nite for its friendly staff and wonderful food! You really can’t get much better, and I’m so pleased to hear of their lovely news, which is a fantastic acknowledgment to the restaurant. Shammy and his team reached the finals for this year’s Tiffin Cup. They were nominated by MP Therese Coffey and were just one of eleven finalists invited to cook at the finals at the House of Commons in July. The team at the Bombay Nite represented the whole of East Anglia at the grand final which took place at Bellamy’s Restaurant in the House of Commons. We heard that the Head Chef, Jamal Uddin, had to cook his signature dish for the judges to taste. He cooked Lamb Lagan, a Bombay Nite special dish he created himself, of minted lamb with tamarind, coriander and chilli. Yum! For more than twenty-five years the Bombay Nite Indian Restaurant has stood in Walton’s High Street as a beacon for the finest Indian cuisine and the friendliest of service. Shammy and his professional team, including a team of chefs who have been with him since the restaurant first opened, are one of the main reasons the Bombay’s loyal customers return again and again.

Many people might not also know that the team also regularly fundraise for Insaan Aid – a charity which supports poverty the world over especially helping children

in some of the world’s poorest countries. As charity is close to my heart and to the heart of The Felixstowe Magazine, Bombay Nite always comes out trumps for me! Well done fellas - I look forward to many more evenings of your exquisite food! Bombay Nite 285 High St, Felixstowe IP11 9DZ 01394 270136 www.bombaynite.co.uk

THE FELIXSTOWE TOWN CRIER UPDATES Felixstowe Town and Around News

Lioness Club of Felixstowe

Well, August has been and gone and with it a spate of planning applications. One relating to the land known as Walton North (the site where Tesco wanted to build) and the other at Ferry Road. Both these sites have evoked a great deal of public concern since the original public planning exhibitions and consultations. The Felixstowe Town Council planning committee met at Walton Community Hall on the 27th July to consider the outline proposals for Walton North and several members of the public attended the meeting. 385 dwellings, new public open space and a new link road from Walton High Street to Candlet Road were proposed. Full planning permission for the demolition of existing buildings and conversion of the curtilage-listed stables to a business use was also included. This latter application was approved. However, after a lengthy debate about the proposals for the rest of the site approval was recommended subject to the Rifle Club being relocated and supported, the proposed link road being widened and the provision of affordable housing also included. Failing these conditions being met, it was proposed the application be refused. It remains to be seen how this application proceeds.

Our monthly business meeting in July was very enjoyable, as we welcomed Angela Howard, our Multiple District Chairman, making her annual visit to our club. At the same meeting we were delighted to listen to Explorers Bethan and Joe, who told us about their plans to spend some time doing voluntary work in South Africa next year. We were full of admiration for their commitment and promised that we will give them a donation towards their trip; takings from our stall at the Lions’ Car Boot Sale on August 27th will go towards this very worthwhile cause.

Ferry Road is and has always been a very sensitive proposal and the proposed developer has sent out 1300 leaflets to the surrounding area asking residents to comment on the proposed development of 198 houses and associated infrastructure prior to a planning application being made. The Spa Gardens have been awarded a Green Flag status and a ceremony was held to raise the flag, which will fly from the flag pole behind the Spa theatre. The new events area created from the yacht pond and go kart area is now open and looking lovely. The grassed area is still unavailable for use as it needs time to establish before it is open to the public.

I was invited to open the British Legion Family Fun Day recently. I was delighted to see the transformation made to the wooden hut which is now a delightful tea room and also the work carried out to the garden areas that has made the whole exterior area inviting and attractive. All the work has been done by volunteers (Felixstowe’s own DIY SOS) and everyone involved with the project must be congratulated on what they have achieved. More work is planned and I do hope that there will be public support for the British Legion Club as the volunteers strive to save it from folding. There has been a loss of 200 members due to a new system of registering for membership – so hopefully some of the old members will decide to renew their membership. Enjoy the rest of the summer – it is going far too quickly. Doreen Savage.

Please mention

Also during July we enjoyed an afternoon tea in the beautiful garden of Lion and Lioness John and Sue Wharton. Many thanks are due to them for their kind hospitality and the wonderful cakes. With more social events lined up for the summer, we will resume serious fundraising in October, with a Clairvoyant Evening on the 12th and a Quiz Night on the 28th. More details soon! For details of events and information about Lionesses, please email Val: vijinks880@hotmail.com.

Orwell Decorative & Fine Arts Society The Society has its first meeting of season 2016-17 on Wednesday Sept 7th. Tony Faber will be recounting the history of his renowned family publishing firm Faber & Faber through its illustrations, covers and designs. Sounds like a great start to the new season!

We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months. Lectures last about an hour, are wonderfully illustrated and are presented by national and international lecturers. Guests and non-members welcome, provided we have available space. A £6 donation is asked. For more info tel. Wendy Robbins on 07736 417347 or email info@orwelldfas.org. uk. Visit our website at http://www.orwelldfas.org.uk/ for latest events and news. ODFAS is a member society of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies.

Felixstowe Family History Society If you have thought about starting to research your family history and are unsure how to go about it or want some help to sort out which of the many websites to use then come and see us at Broadway House in Orwell Road, Felixstowe on Thursdays from 10.15am-12.15pm and we will see if we can point you in the right direction. Our new membership year begins on 1st September so now is the best time to join the society. The cost is only £10 for a single membership or £14 for a joint membership (living at the same address), and if you join you will get free entry to our monthly meetings and a quarterly magazine. You can join at the research sessions on Thursdays or come along to one of our speaker meetings which are held at Broadway House, Orwell Road, Felixstowe on the 2nd Wednesday of most months starting at 7.30pm. As September will be

our AGM the next meeting (in conjuction with Felixstowe History and Museum Society) is Wednesday 12th October 2016 when the talk will be 'Suffolk Punch Trust' with Bruce Smith. Meetings are free to members and £1 for visitors with refreshments available after the talk.

Fados Our next production is 'Busybody' by Jack Popplewell. We audition and cast on Sept 1st, begin rehearsals asap, and then the performance dates will be in November. It will be directed by Malcolm Hunter (the Dean for those of you who came last time). The play is a comedy thriller involving a disappearing body, and interfering office cleaner and a policeman with a bad cold.

As always we welcome anyone interested in joining us. We need as many people who can support us backstage as onstage. There is a particular need in this area for someone to help with our wardrobe. This was revised, brought up to date and the hiring side of it was developed by Eileen Hicks (Chuckles!) and continued by Jean Schwager when Eileen had to give up. Sadly Jean has died after a short illness, which has been a shock and is a very sad loss. Nobody could take her place, but anyone with an interest please contact us on 01394 671306. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in November. Those of you who so obviously enjoyed our recent productions please spread the word.

The Gainsborough Club Last Tuesday, the 2nd of August we had our Annual Charity Garden Party. If you cast your minds back you will recall it was not the best weather for that sort of activity, and the lady who had donated her garden unexpectedly had to offer her house as well!! However, we had an excellent time, raising money for our current charity which is Homestart. Our next meeting is at the St Felix Hall in Gainsborough Road on September 6th at 7.30, when the Rev. Caroline Allen will talk about Life before the Vicarage.

Colneis Flower Club

If you missed our latest meeting, you missed a treat. Brenda Tubb from Maldon could be a stand up comic because she is so naturally funny. Throughout her demonstration (which had the theme ‘Technicolour Dreamcoat’) she had her audience in fits of laughter with her stories about her husband, family and her time as a demonstrator. Brenda’s Demonstration was also a treat. The containers were unusual and interesting and her flowers were stunning, a multitude of colour - beautiful. We had everything from a traditional triangle in green and cream to modern, using pinks and purples. We were also given ideas for our future competitions/exhibitions and ways of cutting oasis to make fish shapes, covered in Elaeagnus leaves for their scales, and sprayed silver; also how to make a handbag from a block of oasis, covered in flowers and with a phormium leaf or medolina stick for a handle. Come along to our next meeting on Thursday 15th September when Jo Poulter from Peterborough will be demonstrating with the theme ‘Picture This’. The practice piece is ‘Still Life’. We meet at 7.30pm in the Old Felixstowe Community Centre, Ferry Road, Felixstowe, IP11 9NB. Members free; Visitors £4. For more information please call 01394 282 468.

Felixstowe Recorded Music Society We commence the new season no longer as Felixstowe Recorded Music Society but as “Music to Enjoy”, a name which, we hope, reflects both our aim and the music played in our meetings. We are a friendly, welcoming group with diverse musical tastes and we are optimistic that there will be something in each of our programmes that you will enjoy, be it new to you or an old favourite. Our Chairman, Norman Sennington, will be presenting his own personal selection with “Chairman’s Choice” at 7.30pm on Wednesday 7th September in our usual venue of The United Reformed Church Hall, Tomline Road and we extend a warm invitation to you to join us there. Visitors £2.50 including refreshments. More information from Mike Fowle on 01394 275098 or email mike@thorndyke.fsbusiness.co.uk.

The Presentation night recently followed the club sprint gala which was the culmination of all the 2016 Felixstowe Club Championships. Rebecca Sherwin from Team Ipswich presented the prizes. There were silver salvers for the top boy and girl in each age group and shields awarded to one swimmer in each of the squad categories. This year Felixstowe hosted the second round of the Summer League. Overall our girls were placed second and the boys were placed fourth. The Summer League final round with all 14 local teams swimming took place at Ipswich Crown Pools. Overall Felixstowe Waves finished in 9th place.

The club will be hosting another free taster session for young swimmers on Friday 30th September 2016 from 7pm

Local Charity

Do you Have a Spare Room to Rent?

Solo Housing is a charity based in Diss, Norfolk. Their aim, since 1985 has been to help single people find suitable and affordable accommodation. Individuals are referred to Solo Housing either by the local authority, self-referral or through other agencies and ‘word of mouth’. Many hundreds of single people have been helped through the scheme over the years. One of the services offered by Solo Housing is the ‘Lodgings scheme’. This is currently operated in the South Norfolk, Waveney and Suffolk Coastal areas.

This scheme is totally reliant upon a steady supply of suitable landlords who are able to offer a room in their homes, where Solo Housing can help place a client who is seeking somewhere to live.

All single people who come to Solo Housing for assistance are seen by one of their homelessness prevention officers to enquire into their own particular circumstances, to establish how they can best be helped. Solo also visit potential landlords who wish to be included in the scheme to establish what kind of accommodation they have to offer, and to ascertain the criteria they are looking for in a lodger.

The scheme is unique in that Solo Housing take great care to match a client to a landlord accurately to help ensure that the process is as trouble free as possible.

Steve Freeman is the homelessness prevention officer for Solo Housing covering the Suffolk Coastal area.

“There are many reasons why people face homelessness. They may have lost their job, a relationship breakdown, a partner or family member that has died/fallen ill leading to the loss of their home, and many others. People that come to us for assistance need advice on how to manage their situation. The lodgings scheme with Solo Housing is successful due to the fact we meet with all parties involved which enables us to fully understand their situation and lodgings criteria.

This is a completely free service and neither party is obligated. It also provides the household with extra tax free income and we provide support to both parties.”

If you live in the Felixstowe area, and have a spare room to rent out, Steve asks that you contact him where the scheme will be explained to you with no obligation. Steve Freeman can be contacted on 07880 737 520, or call Solo Housing on 01379 640250. He can also be emailed at stephen.freeman@solohousing.org. Charity Number 1068017. WHAT IS A PERSONAL TAX ACCOUNT? A Personal Tax Account replaces the conventional tax returns, in an effort to modernise the tax system. They will bring together each taxpayer’s details in one place, just like an online bank account, so they can register for new services, update their information, and understand quickly and easily what they need to pay — without ever having to complete a tax return again. By early 2016 five million small businesses and ten million individuals will have access to their own digital tax account. • Don’t use a computer? Not everyone is computer literate

Further to the success last year of “The Fashion and Music Show” that raised £4000 for Alzheimer’s.org, Eileen Hicks and Julie Locke would like to announce their “Old Time Music Hall” to be held once again at The Orwell Hotel on Friday 14th October.

What a brave little lass. It’s been nearly ten months since Sophia had her skull operation and we thought it would be lovely to get an update from Lavinia, Sophia’s mum, on the determined young lady’s progress.

Old Time Music Hall Sophia Heeroma When deciding if and what they would do to raise money this year Julie remembered that Eileen had mentioned her great uncle had appeared in the music hall in Brighton with the likes of Max Miller, so there was really nothing more appropriate they could do especially as Eileen has a full Pearly Queen outfit!

They have all the gang from last year along with popular locals; comedian Ron Markwell, Dennis Maisey with his George Formby tribute the wonderful ventriloquist Richard Wymark and our very own Dean Wales as the incomparable Deany LaRue who will be leading us all down to “The Old Bull and Bush”. Dean actually got to know Danny personally and often saw him entertain at The Brick Lane Music Hall. Eileen has been busy making costumes for her family who were all models in last year’s show, they will be around selling raffle tickets, flags poised.

Tickets will once again be £10 and available from Webb’s in Orwell Road from September. They would love those attending (if they so wish) to don a hat or feather boa (or both) to enter into the spirit of “The Good Old Days” and join in with singing all the old songs.

Peter Phillips will be brandishing his gavel as Chairman to keep everyone in order! They look forward to an evening packed full of nostalgia, fun and laughter.

Sophia’s skull has healed perfectly with no complications and the shape of her face is looking lovely. The other big news is that despite specialist’s expectations Sophia finally learnt to walk. Ok, she’s still unsteady on her feet but once she is fitted with splints we hope to see a dramatic improvement.

On a lesser note, Sophia unfortunately has also been diagnosed with Global Developmental Delay. Specialists also suspect that Sophia may be on the autism spectrum. However, this won’t hold her back or us as we are determined to carry on like we have before, making every day count. We have received support from some fantastic people over the last ten months. Sophia regularly attends assessment meetings at The Child Development Centre at Ipswich Hospital. There she meets specialists in communication, play, speech and movement. Their care and support to my husband, Sophia and I has been outstanding. Sophia now also attends The Bumblebee Children’s Charity in Sproughton. This has been fantastic for her and we have really seen an improvement since attending. This charity focuses on the complete development of a child and is all run by trained volunteers. They really push Sophia to do and be the best she can be, and she thoroughly enjoys going. Without people like these to support us and Sophia, things would have been a lot harder and slower progress for her.

After numerous tests we now understand that Sophia, being nearly three, has the mind of a 6 month old child. This for any parent is extremely hard to hear, but we feel that we are giving her the best chances under the circumstances. The road ahead is going to be hard, not just for Sophia but for my husband and I too. We are going to get through this though, as this is just what parents do. We cannot thank everyone enough for their continued support, from GOSH, Bumblebees & The Child development Centre, we really appreciate all the effort that has been made for us. And finally, this month I will be doing a charity 25km Thames walk for Great Ormond Street Hospital. If anyone would like to sponsor me for this great cause, please visit www.justgiving.com/Lavinia-Heeroma.

Local Law More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Newly Qualified Solicitor Now that it’s official, I have the pleasure of announcing that this month’s update comes from Jackamans’ newest qualified solicitor! It has taken a degree, a Graduate Diploma in Law, a Legal Practice Course, a Professional Skills Course, months of paralegal work and two years of recognised training, but I must say that it has all been worth it to achieve my ambition of becoming a fully-fledged solicitor. All that remains is to attend my admission ceremony at the Law Society in London to celebrate with my husband and family members who have supported me throughout. I will be eternally grateful to Jackamans for giving me the opportunity to progress my career, and in particular to the Felixstowe team who have made my wills, trusts and probate training so rewarding. I am staying with Jackamans as a newly qualified solicitor at the Felixstowe Office, and I look forward to continuing to develop and to learn from our head of department, Carol Lockett, who has over 30 years’ experience in the field.

As this will be my last article with The Felixstowe Magazine, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for

following my progress, and to thank all of Jackamans’ clients for their continued support. I do hope that my updates have provided an insight into a career path and areas of law which may have been of interest to you.

As always please do feel free to drop into the Felixstowe office if there is anything that I or another team member can assist you with at: Jackamans, 167/171 Hamilton Road, Felixstowe, IP11 7DR

Picture shows members of the Felixstowe Wills and Probate department. Paige Carter, Legal Secretary (back left), (on the right) Fiona Mann, Solicitor, and in front Carol Lockett, Consultant. Beverly Dixon is also a valued member of the team but was unavailable for the photograph.
