It’s All About Listening “We’re still listening – nearly six years on!” declares Margaret Bale, team leader of FLS (Felixstowe Listening Service). The service was set up in 2012 as a satellite of the Ipswich charity, Inspire Counselling & Listening, to offer people in the Felixstowe area a safe, confidential place where they could share their stories with trained volunteer listeners. Since then FLS has helped well over a hundred people to explore difficult issues in their lives and find the right way forward. “We are passionate about good listening. It’s such a powerful way of helping people to confront and solve problems,” Margaret explains. “As people tell their stories, perhaps for the very first time, they hear it for themselves and begin to understand what is going on and how they can make changes in their lives. Our listeners never tell people what they should do. Our role is accompany them on what can be a very difficult but healing journey of self-discovery.” FLS has been on its own journey these last six years, from an idea that was first floated at The Salvation Army that what was needed was somewhere where people could bring their emotional problems to a service that today has a team of volunteer listeners, professional counsellors and receptionists drawn from a number of local churches. A more recent step on that journey has been a move from Felixstowe Library to Ranelagh Road Christian Fellowship, where FLS has the use of private, newly refurbished rooms at the back of the church. “We were very happy at the Library,” Margaret stresses, “and the Library staff were very supportive. However, at Ranelagh Road we have more facilities and can offer an even better service.”

“Supporting the community with more than just a listening ear” A strong Christian faith marks out the members of the FLS team, all of whom are volunteers. It is that faith which motivates the team and enables them to do what can sometimes be very demanding, although always rewarding, work. It is very much a personal faith and the volunteers work with people of any faith or no faith and never discuss personal beliefs unless the clients choose to do so. FLS aims to make the service easy to use. People refer themselves, either by phoning 07896 326459 or e-mailing felixstowelisten@gmail.com. They are then invited to meet with the team leader to decide whether listening or counselling will best meet their needs. Listening is a free service, although donations are requested. There is a fee for counselling but people’s ability to pay is taken into account. Margaret’s final words, “If something is troubling you – however small or however large it feels – talk to us. We’re there to listen.”

BASIC were the FIRST charity to receive food from Fare Share, Ipswich

BASIC Life Charitv Charity September was a great month for BASIC with progress being made on many long-term projects. Community Allotment While we’re still waiting to be allocated an allotment – we’re already received enquiries from people who would like to be involved. Hopefully we’ll have a plot and be at the planning stage soon so watch this space! Pop-up Shops It’s wonderful to see so many new faces at our pop-up shops which are held each Tuesday at 11am and both St. Edmunds Church, Langer Road and St. Philips Hall, Wadgate Road. If you haven’t been and you could do with some extra shopping at just £1 a bag why not come along and see what we have to offer? The big news though has been our Community Partnership with Fare Share. Fare Share are a large national organisation who receive food from all of the major supermarkets and also directly from manufacturers. We had heard that they were due to open a storage and distribution hub in Ipswich and we’d been eager to be involved. Well, we ended up being the very first charity to collect food from their warehouse in Ipswich and the supply will totally transform what we can offer at the pop-ups each week.

4

“A regular update from this brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support” BASIC pay a quarterly membership fee and in return we are able to collect the equivalent of six trolley loads of food each week. All the food is in date and perfectly good to eat. Each week we make our selections of what we’d like to collect from the inventory sent from the warehouse. The result is that we’ll always have a varied supply in hand. We’re waiting for the fresh produce to become available but in the meantime our car creaks along the A14 each Tuesday filled to the brim with great produce! It’s a familv family affair As the youngest of three brothers (by quite a long way too!) I’m all too aware of the grief, scams and tricks the ‘baby’ sibling has to endure whilst growing up. For instance, following a rather disagreeable taste experience as a wee thing with a burnt Smith’s Crisp (you know the ones with the little blue bag of salt which you had to apply yourself and subsequently shake the bag like crazy) my older brother by 8 years insisted that he should taste every suspect crisp before it entered my cakehole. Obviously it was to save me from a repeat of that previous unfortunate event… how kind. Of course and needless to say, I typically only ended up with two or three crisps left in every pack that my brother had deemed suitable for me to eat. And I have to mention the Christmas I received a Scalextric. A toy that was looked upon with envious eyes. Now if you’ve ever owned one, you’ll know there’s a bit of setting up to do and only being very young, my dear brothers offered to carry out this laborious task for me. And despite them ‘testing’ it until they burnt out all the cars’ motors, I still fell for the ‘put your tongue on the tracks and we’ll pull the trigger; it won’t hurt’ game suggestion. Now I assumed kids were far more sophisticated these days until I was surrounded by little darlings over the school holidays. They’re vile to one another.

“Random ramblings by our local lad” I overheard one angelic little girl say to her brother (who I assumed had ruffled her feathers a little while prior): “It’s not raining, it’s God crying because you’re so ugly.” I too was fortunate to catch an aside from a 6-year-old lad to his little sister, after he was told by his dad that he couldn’t have a puppy because Victoria was allergic to them. Grinning, the aforementioned 6-year-old said to his baby sister: “Well we’re just going to have to make sure we lose you somewhere today aren’t we?” I thought the time my brothers, whilst babysitting me, forced me into a box and tied my wrists to my ankles over the outside of the box to keep me out of their way (they let me out 5 minutes before my parents returned) was bad, but according to a chum, that was nothing. Thinking it was a kind and loving gesture to pick her up from the airport after a long flight, one female friend’s brother was waiting for her in arrivals with a board that said: “Welcome Home from The Hair Removal Clinic!”

Felixstowe Probus ‘84 Probus is an association of semi-retired and retired professional and business people in clubs throughout the world. There are over 2,000 clubs in Great Britain and Ireland, and every club is autonomous. Felixstowe Probus ‘84 is a purely male social club. We meet every second Tuesday at 10am at the Marlborough Hotel in Felixstowe, where we live up to the objectives of PROBUS: Friendship, Fellowship and Fun. We have a speaker or entertainer at every meeting, covering a wide range of themes, including travel, historical, local and musical. Members also give talks, usually on a personal interest. Members have lunch together after a talk, approximately every other meeting. On some occasions throughout the year, there are special lunches, when the ladies are invited to attend. The club arranges a couple of trips a year to places of local interest and also links in with other local Probus groups for trips further afield. In addition we have a close link with Clacton Probus.

Felixstowe town and around The summer is officially over and Autumn awaits us. The gloom outside reflects that fact too! That said, it has been a great summer overall with some fabulous events that have brought people to the Town in their thousands – and as I write this is the day after Art on the Prom which I really think was one of the best we have had. The weather behaved – and the crowds enjoyed the art work, music and food that were on offer. Brilliant. Now down to earth and the reality of some disastrous news that has just been announced. This relates to the decision by the Secretary of State to the Appeal made by the proposed developer of land in Candlet/Gulpher Road. This vast area of prime countryside was the subject of a proposal to build 500 houses, a school, community centre and sheltered accommodation. When the proposal came before both the Town and District planning committees it was refused. The developer went to Appeal and an enquiry followed and before the Inspector delivered his verdict the matter was “called in” by the Secretary of State. Local Councillors have awaited the result of this call in for months and we are all appalled at the decision to grant planning permission that has been agreed. The decision is predicated on the misconception that SCDC do not have a 5 year land supply to meet housing demand in the coming years. This is untrue as there is more than a 5 year supply – but this has been ignored and the devastating decision is now one that we are desperately seeking a way to overturn. Watch this space! Suffolk Coastal has also been reviewing the current Local Plan with a view to a new plan being published. Part of this work involves an Issues and Options paper that identifies land that has been offered up by owners for the future development of housing. This paper is now out for consultation and I am sure there will be concern at some of the land area offered up for Felixstowe. Much of it reminds

8

“Update from our local town councillor” me of the infamous “blobs plan” that SCDC published years ago and which caused a great deal of distress to local residents. The following information is printed at the beginning of the Issues and Option paper: • Includes a large number of sites which have been put forward to the Council as “potential land for development” including housing, employment and other uses, • These sites have been submitted by landowners, developers and other interested stakeholders, • At this early stage all the sites received have been published as part of this consultation, regardless of known constraints, for transparency and openness, • Far more sites have been put forward than we actually need, • These sites currently have no formal planning status, • We will thoroughly assess all sites and reduce the number down as the Local Plan progresses through future rounds of public consultation. I hope these words will put minds at rest when considering the plans for Felixstowe in the paper. The completion of the work outside the Leisure Centre as part of the Pier project is now complete. The whole area looks amazing – but in my view needs some “greenery” somewhere to soften the area a bit. Hope this can happen! Doreen Savage.

Kerseys

SOLICITORS William Edward Kersey, the founder of Kerseys Solicitors.

A HISTORIC law firm is marking the 100 year anniversary of its founder’s son’s death from Felixstowe - killed at Passchendaele during World War 1. Kerseys Solicitors was established in Ipswich 1881 by a then 21-year-old William Edward Kersey. His only son, William Henry Myddelton Kersey (known as ‘Myddelton’), who was expected to join his father’s firm, was killed in the infamous western Belgium battle at the age of 24 on October 17, 1917.

“An incredible history to a 100 year old law firm”

Kerseys, which is based in Suffolk and Essex, will hold a minute silence as a mark of respect to Kersey and all who have been killed in wars or recent tragic events across the world. Managing and Senior Partner, Anthony Wooding, said: “It’s sad, but also important to be reminded of our long history. It helps us to put our difficulties into perspective and recognise the opportunities many of us have today. “Sadly, there is still fighting and suffering in the world. We want the occasion to show our respect for those who died in the First World War and in tragedies since.” Myddelton was killed near Ypres when a stray shell fell on his unit’s dug-out in the early hours of the morning, while they were sleeping. William Henry Myddelton Kersey, who was killed at Passchendaele in 1917.

According to research by Magdalen College, Oxford University, where he studied, a brother-officer, Captain Leonard Amis Hempson said the men would have moved from their doomed position the night before – only for a hitch in arrangements. In a letter of condolence to the Kersey family he said: “Myddleton was greatly loved and respected by all the men” and that “his death had taken all the heart out of them when I was down there this morning”.” Hempson ended: “But for a hitch in the arrangements, the Battery would have been out of the position before last night. It was to be, I suppose, and we can only accept it”. Myddelton is buried at The Huts Cemetery near Ypres in Flanders, Belgium. A battlefield cross was given to the family in lieu of his body, which has been placed at St John the Baptist Church in Felixstowe in his memory.

Memorials with William Henry Myddelton Kersey’s name inscribed at St John the Baptist Church in Felixstowe.

He left behind his father, William, mother Ada Laura Kersey (nee Peggy) and one sister, Marion Elizabeth. An obituary from his family reads: “In proud and ever loving memory of our very dear and only son and brother William Henry Myddelton Kersey, captain 166 Siege Battery, Killed near Ypres Oct 17 1917.” William Henry’s name is also on brass plaque inside the church and on a war memorial on Felixstowe seafront. Father-of-two Anthony added: “It’s hard to imagine the pain and suffering so many people endured and the heartache of the parents who were to never see their children again.” William Henry Myddelton was born on December 4, December 1892, and lived in Willbury, Norwich Road, Ipswich. He also lived at Seagull House in Felixstowe. He joined the Essex and Suffolk Royal Garrison Artillery in 1915 and was promoted to Captain in 1917. He served at home until 1916 and was killed near Ypres a year later. He studied at Wellington College, Berkshire and Magdalen College, Oxford University, where he is commemorated on both Rolls of Honour.

The Passchendaele Cross itself, given to family in lieu of his body at the back of St John the Baptist Church.

Anthony, who also studied at Oxford, with his chosen subject being Modern History, said: “He showed such promise. Like many young men at the time, his life was taken too soon and he never got to realise his potential.”

Vietnamese and Thai are two of my favourite types of food, so when I heard of this new restaurant in town featuring classic Asian seafood, meat and poultry dishes, as well as a beautiful variety of vegetarian choices, I couldn’t help but get myself down there! It all started with sticky rice with peanut and sesame salt, the best red thai curry I’ve ever tasted, followed by sweet and sour chicken with

“A review of the authentic and novel Southeast Asian cuisine by the Bronze Pot” capsicum pepper and pineapple, fish balls with vegetables and beautifully fragrant coconut curry sauce. (I did share - I promise!) For those of you who are trying to cut down on calories or have a vegan diet, the Bronze Pot is a fantastic choice! With such a variety and healthy cooking techniques, you definitely want to have this eatery on your list of places to go. Open only since August, I am so pleased to see this outstanding restaurant become part of Felixstowe’s diverse choice of dining. The lovely Ha, owner of the Bronze Pot, is originally from Vietnam and has lived in Felixstowe since 2001. In creating the Bronze Pot, it is evident that Ha aims to capture that elusive taste of the east and a warm ambience of friendship in her restaurant. Ha’s staff are just as welcoming - especially the talented chef, Henry, who is himself a Felixstowe lad. Meeting Henry, I was very impressed with his attitude to honouring the true taste of asian food and his enormous passion for authentic flavour. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to this delightful restaurant, and encourage you to take your friends and family and have one of the best nosh ups you’ve ever experienced in Felixstowe!
