The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - November 2018

WELCOME TO

November There’s excitement in the air! November is quite a special month for us as it marks our first anniversary of having gone subscription and this is the moment I get to give you the skinny on our upcoming evolution! It is truly exciting as I can honestly say that our lovely magazine, which started in 2014, will become something MUCH bigger this December - you can read all about it on page 13! The ‘C’ word had to be mentioned a few times in this month’s issue as we have some early Christmas events which you won’t want to miss, like the switching on of the town’s Christmas lights and its accompanying Craft Market, which is always great to see. Have a great month ahead and enjoy the read.

Book Review

A review of Between You & Me by Susan Wiggs

Dr. Reese Powell is on her way to becoming a pediatric surgeon, a dream that does not belong to her but to her parents. Joining their practice once she’s finished with her training is what she has been prepped for since birth. Caleb Stoltz is also stuck in a world that he didn’t choose. Growing up Amish under a devout but brutal father left him wanting to get away as soon as possible. And he did, for a while. But after his brother and sister-inlaw are murdered, honouring his brother’s dying wish means raising his orphaned niece Hannah and nephew Jacob in their Amish community. It also means returning to the family homestead, where his father still rules with an iron fist. When 11-year-old Jacob suffers a traumatic injury, Caleb and Reese’s worlds collide. Spending time with each other while Jacob is hospitalized at the Philadelphia hospital where Reese works makes them both question the paths that they’re on. As they both care for the little injured boy, feelings also begin to develop between the two of them. Even though they know it would be impossible to continue their relationship once Jacob is discharged, they can’t help wanting to follow their own dreams. Susan Wiggs, the author of Between You & Me published in 2018, takes her readers deep into Amish country and makes us feel what it’s like to live without basic conveniences most of us take for granted. Electricity, television and cell phones are things the modern world couldn’t imagine living without. She also shows us that love can take hold even in the most challenging situations. Some of the most difficult choices are the ones that can bring us the most happiness, even if that means 4

disappointing others who think that their way is the right way. A Harvard graduate living on an island in Puget Sound, Washington, in the U.S.A., Susan Wiggs has been on the New York Times bestselling list and has millions of copies of her books in print in many countries and in a variety of languages. With stories focusing on the everyday dramas of regular people, readers can often relate to the struggles that her characters are facing. She enjoys writing and in addition to writing articles about small town life, is currently working on her second book. Baked Sweet Potato Fries

At the heart of every great community... is great food! Crispy, easy to make, perfectly seasoned, and guaranteed to keep the winter blues at bay! Ingredients 2 tablespoons olive oil 5 peeled sweet potatoes 2 1/2 tablespoon of cornstarch 1 tablespoon house seasoning (recipe below) Salt to taste House Seasoning 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1 cup salt 1/4 cup black pepper 1/4 cup garlic powder Method 1. excess starch and achieve ultimate crispiness when cooked. 4. Drain and use a towel to pat dry. 5. Toss fries in olive oil. 6. Stir house seasoning with cornstarch and coat fries. 7. Use parchment paper to line a pan and lay fries evenly in a single layer (use two pans if needed). 8. Place in oven and be sure to flip fries halfway through cooking time. 9. Bake until tender and golden brown, (about 20 minutes). 10. Transfer fully cooked fries to a cooling rack and allow to rest on the parchment paper for 5 more minutes. 11. Add salt to season at the very end. You can customise your fries with grated cheese or some cayenne pepper for those of you who love a little heat. Mmm!

2. Cut evenly-sized fries. Avoid having over- or under-cooked fries by taking the time to evenly cut your fries. About 1/4-inch thick. 3. Cover completely with cold water and soak for at least 30 minutes to rinse off the

Basic Life Charity A regular update from a brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support Now that we’ve officially moved into the winter season it’s time to be thinking about Christmas! At BASIC we have a rich tradition of supporting local people over the festive season. We usually collect seasonal food and other goodies to be passed on in Christmas sacks to those who have been identified as lonely or vulnerable in the Felixstowe area by our friends at Social Services, Citizens Advice and other professional groups. Last year we went further by writing to all the care and nursing homes in the area and we were delighted to be able to pass on presents to those who may not have any visitors or gifts over Christmas. We were assured that your generosity made a real difference to those individuals. One of the easiest and most popular ways to donate is to fill a shoe box. We were lucky enough to have lots and lots donated via our shops last year and we were amazed at how thoughtful and inventive they were. We’re always asked what is appropriate to put in them and our usual answer is to put in anything you’d like to receive as a gift yourself! We do ask that the boxes are marked on the outside with the age and sex of the intended recipient – i.e. ‘Girl up to 10’ or ‘Older man’ etc. You get the idea! One group which we’re particularly keen to support is the young parents who 18 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - November 2018

sacrifice so much for their children during the year and are often forgotten. Thanks to the regular features The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine give to us each month, awareness in the town has boosted since the magazine began! We’ve now been lucky enough to have considerable media coverage during the month with articles in the Ipswich Evening Star, East Anglian Daily Times and the Essential Suffolk Magazine. As our work grows and more people become aware of it we want to acknowledge that it’s only possible due to the hard work and dedication of our brilliant staff and volunteers who always do their best for the charity and the community – thank you!

Age UK Suffolk are helping to combat loneliness and social isolation With 1 in 10 people aged over 60 in Suffolk saying that they are often or always lonely, local independent older person’s charity Age UK Suffolk is determined to help alleviate this issue and ensure that “no one should have no one”. With an already successful befriending service, supporting nearly 200 people each month, already in place, the charity are looking to relaunch visiting, or face-toface befriending in the Felixstowe area. Visiting befriending is a fantastic way of really building a relationship with an older person and making a huge difference in

their life – like in any relationship, after a while volunteers and clients chat away like old friends – no rush, no agenda, just talking about anything interesting. It’s also a great way of signposting clients to other services that may make a difference to how they live their life. All of Age UK Suffolk’s befrienders are volunteers, and in order to ensure that the charity helps as many people as possible they are looking to recruit new volunteers, both for telephone and visiting befriending – so, if you have an hour or so spare each week, love a chat, and would like to help, we’d love to hear from you. If you, or someone you care for, would benefit from this free service, please contact Becky in the Befriending Team on 01473 353061 or email befriending@ageuksuffolk.org.

We’re

Growing!!! Growing!! It’s our first anniversary of having gone subscription and we are delighted to announce a fantastic evolution!

THE BIG EVOLUTION From this December, The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine will become a stunning, seasonal publication of more than 150 pages full of all your favourite features! WHAT INSPIRED THE UPGRADE? As is traditional at Birdy Publications HQ, we’ve spent the past two months beavering away surveying our readers one-to-one from across Felixstowe and Woodbridge to find out what you’ve loved about the past year, so we can include more of the most popular features. From this, we’ve had some brilliant feedback which has been massively useful to our team and ensures we produce a magazine that is a true resource in your home! THE FEEDBACK & THE RESULTS We’ve found that there are specific features you love and one or two things you don’t need. Based on this, the magazine will be: • over 150 pages full of all your favourites, • based soley on Felixstowe (Woodbridge will get its own magazine in good time), • have a full and comprehensive What’s On Guide, • have listings of groups and clubs in Felixstowe, • contain more vouchers and with much more variety saving you hundreds of pounds each season, • contain more of all the great local features you love! A huge thank you to the hundreds who took part in our survey and helping us to formulate a magazine that will be truly unique for the town. Don’t miss out on our first issue, call now and get yours posted to you this December!

Woodbridge Youth Club

A huge step towards a much-needed new home for Woodbridge community groups East Suffolk Council has thrown its support behind the proposed landmark community, arts and youth centre in Woodbridge by granting £188,800 to the social enterprise Jetty Lane CIC. Jetty Lane CIC is working to build and run a new centre to support young people, artists and community groups in the heart of Woodbridge. Since Woodbridge Youth Club was demolished in 2017, many youth, arts and community organisations have been homeless. East Suffolk Council’s financial backing covers pre-construction costs for the planned development located near the River Deben. The proposed centre, which submitted for full planning in August, will provide much-needed space for theatre groups, martial arts and exercise classes, Woodbridge Scouts, Just42 youth charity, services for the elderly, local businesspeople, artists and more.

22 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - November 2018

Caroline Page, Chair of Jetty Lane CIC, commented, “We are extremely grateful to East Suffolk Council for their generous response to our funding application. It is a great boost to the cause and guarantees that the money we raise from here-on-in will be spent on construction. As the town continues to expand with new housing developments, there is a greater need than ever to build a new space for community and local groups to thrive.” Jetty Lane was founded by County Councillor for Woodbridge Caroline Page, Caroline Rutherford from local youth charity Just42, Group Scout leader, 1st Woodbridge - Adam Thorpe, and local resident Cordelia Richman. The planned building will comprise eight individual studios for artists, two halls, hireable space for community groups to use at an affordable rent, as well as office facilities provided on a commercial basis. The results of the planning application are expected before Christmas 2018. To learn more about Jetty Lane or to donate to the project, visit: www.jettylane.com/

Churches Together Remember in Felixstowe Commemorating 100 years since 163 local people died during WW1 2018 marks 100 years since the end of the First World War. During this conflict 163 men from Felixstowe and surrounding villages died. Many of our churches will be holding events during November to focus on the sacrifice made by local people 1914-1918. Look out for the cascades of poppies from the towers of St John’s on Orwell Road and St Martin’s in Trimley, and from a cross outside St Mary’s in Walton. (Marvel at the number of beautiful knitted poppies made by church members to achieve this!)

Also look out for the two silhouettes in the Town Hall Gardens and the Triangle (one to move permanently to War Graves cemetery). 3rd - 11th November Exhibition in Falkenham Church to commemorate. DRONE TRAINING LOVE THE IDEA OF DRONING?

Learn the real skills of flying so you fly safely and legally. As a total drone novice I was very interested to spend a couple of hours with Mick. I couldn’t have loved it more! Mick taught me everything I needed to know to fly responsibly as well as teaching me some brilliant aerial manoeuvres I’ll be practicing to perfect! I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Mick and would highly recommend his training to anyone interested in flying drones.

This Year We’re off to Sunny Spain… Random ramblings by our local lad I adore travel and I’ve been fortunate enough to explore such exotic locations as Kenya, The Nile, the Croatian archipelago and Hastings. Yet, it occurred to me on a recent trip to Spain just how much the Brits adapt destinations to meet their craving for home. Before I begin however, I must just ask why they don’t just stay at home if they struggle so much locating Marmite, Nescafe and bags of pickled onion flavoured Monster Munch abroad? But back to my recent voyage to Catalonia. So my partner, pals and I decide to leave our resort and head out to the historic city of Tarragona to experience the ancient amphitheatre, soak up the almost tangible ambience of the Roman circus and grab a few bargains at the brand new Zara megastore. I bagged a lovely pair of slippers which are an extraordinarily faithful copy of the ones worn by Michael Gove and they came with a complimentary matching drawstring pyjama bag too. I don’t wear PJs now so I’ve taken to keeping my pegs in it. We board the bus, battle it out with some of the elderly locals to ensure we bag the back seats and settle in for an hour and a half trip to this cultural metropolis. Now the route we took wormed us through various other coastal resorts where we were surprised to see Tapas bars containing just a handful of people, restaurants claiming their paellas were second-to-none barely half full. It wasn’t until we turned a corner that we spotted what must have been the culinary hotspot of this town. What did it have that the others didn’t? Folk were spilling out on to the street. Was it luscious Tortilla? Fresh

anchovies from the local fishermen? The finest hand blended Sangria perhaps? No. None of those. As our bus drew closer we learned the name of the establishment was in fact ‘Rita’s Tavern’ and it displayed an enormous sign boasting it served… wait for it… Real Heinz Tomato soup! Yep, and the small print even suggested Cream of Chicken was on its way so keep checking their Facebook page for updates. They served an OAP’s Fish and Chips (or should that be Fish ‘n’ Chips) supper special. And to wash it all down you could order a pint of Tetley’s Bitter (best said with a northern accent). We heard one couple in the week, Paul and Barbara from Stoke Newington taking a pop at a waiter for serving some beautiful cured meats. “What’s this nonsense!” Paul exclaimed. The waiter explained it was a delicious Jamón, a Spanish dried meat, and that they might know it as Serano Ham. After raucous laughter Barbara admitted, “Ooh, we thought it meant we could have Jam On…you know, Jam On crumpets, Jam On Warburtons…we couldn’t possibly eat this, what do you think we are, Spanish?” I despair. Anyway after hauling ourselves around Tarragona, ravenous we discovered a wonderful local eatery… best Steak and Kidney pud I’ve ever tasted.
