Welcome to November’s edition of The Felixstowe Magazine

Blimey, with Halloween just past and Guy Fawkes Day just around the corner, November never lets us down for lack of events.

Did you know that there are a whole bucket of other events; (I promise you I’m not making this up!) November 3rd - Sandwich Day, November 6th - Marooned Without a Compass Day, November 12th Chicken Soup for the Soul Day, November 13th - World Kindess Day, November 17th - World Peace Day and last but not least, November 24th - All Our Uncle’s are Monkeys Day! Our cover this month is again by the very talented Jason Sadler...It’s probably a bit more Halloween oriented than I should have had November’s cover, but I loved the photo and thought it would be a shame not to show you all! We love showcasing local talent so please do send your photos or photos of illustrations and paintings in and we can use them for future issues. (Just make sure they’re high resolution). This month’s issue is packed with fantastic local events, incredibly inspiring local people and news of the much anticipated re-opening of the Spa Pavillion (next page). Do enjoy your read and I’ll see you next month. Mandeep Birdy Editor

Be prepared for high energy soul music with that unique Commitments twist. The Spa saw its last performance in January 2013 when sadly the curtain fell for, what many felt, would be the final time. Local Charity & Their News

BASIC Life Charity

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe based BASIC, an independant Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. November always heralds the real start to winter in Felixstowe it seems – so the heating is on, the long windswept walks along the prom can start and it’s time to get out those thick jumpers!

We’ve always been lucky at BASIC to have fantastic items donated to us - so now you’ll be able to find a coat (any coat) at a maximum £5 and those all-important jumpers, trousers, jeans and tops at £2 an item! Scarves, woolly hats and gloves have also appeared so for the complete ‘prom-walk outfit’ why not pop into one of our shops and get kitted out for about £10.

Looking back to October we were delighted to be supported by David Liffen and his son Wayne (aka ‘This Disguise’) with a live performance at Felixstowe British Legion. They were a great, talented act and the event raised a superb £390 for BASIC! Star of the show was the wonderful Lynn Liffen with the raffle and all who contributed to a quite astonishing buffet!

David and Wayne Liffen presenting a cheque for £390 to BASIC Founder, Graham Denny By the time of printing we’ll also have enjoyed the Halloween Quiz held by Lucy Ainsley at The Labour Club, Walton on behalf

of BASIC and the ‘Brew for Blake’ appeal.

At the moment we’ve been so grateful for all of the food we’ve received for our food banks. We have been supported by many churches and schools with contributions from their harvest festival collections.

We also have the regular donations from many people including the items at Solar Co-op Store in Hamilton Road.

Each year we make up seasonal sacks of goodies for local people who are vulnerable, alone or in need of some cheer over the Christmas period. We will be making these up soon in the run up to the festive period – so thank you to all who are making the lives of local people that little bit brighter.

Mystery Shopper

5

Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

My Fish Dish

I have, from a very early age, been partial to a nice piece of fish. My late mother used to remind me of the time when I, aged 5, was taken to the Routemaster in Felixstowe and I boldly stated to the waitress “I would like cod and chips please, but no mushy peas”. “I am sorry” she replied “The fish is off the menu today” I was apparently quite devastated. Luckily, as an adult, there is no such problem at Felixstowe’s award winning Fish Dish in Undercliff Road West. There is an abundance of freshly cooked fish, (fried or grilled) seafood and even not so fishy things on the menu for children and grown ups alike.

They also have a take away section for those who choose to eat their food whilst staring at the sea opposite. In addition, there is a bar area.

The owner, Alper Tekin, from Turkey, and his fiancée, Sarka, originally from The Czech Republic, run a well organised catering establishment. The staff are polite, well presented and hard working. The food, delicious, and there is a good selection of wines and beers (some from Turkey and The Czech Republic) as well as hot and cold beverages. Since my childhood days of ordering fried cod and chips, my palate has moved on to liking grilled sea bass, and at the Fish Dish this comes with chips and a beautiful Mediterranean salad.

If you want a starter and a dessert, the menu will accommodate. So if you love fish or seafood as much as I do, here is the place to head too for lunch or a evening meal. Bon appetite. Local Person

You’re in for a treat this month with all the local people we’re featuring... this is exactly why we at The Felixstowe Magazine love doing what we do - to be able to show off these amazing folks! Here’s local legend, Kirsty Kirk to kick us off...

Why Raise Money for Children in Need?

Kirsty with her four children...

At one of Dexter’s Bar live music nights...

Fun with Dexter’s Bar fancy dress nights...

With a PhD in the Sciences, you cannot get a more qualified pub landlady, than the lovely Kirsty Kirk. Here she is to tell us about taking over what used to be Chuffers, and her work to support the upcoming Children in Need event... In the short months since Dexter’s Bar became a local community pub both staff and customers have already been busy raising money for charities, both locally and for wider causes, such as the Syrian Refugees appeal. We have become, what is affectionately called, ‘Dexter’s Army’ and the compassion for others is palpable. Don’t misunderstand, we aren’t professing to be the next Mother Theresa but we all have our own cause that is close to our hearts. Every single one of us, there’s something that just ‘gets you.’ For me, it’s children. I’m a mother of four and again, I’m no saint, I’m human and I make mistakes but what I can promise is that those little people are my world and everything I do is for them. The thought that any child could be vulnerable, at risk, isolated or neglected because of circumstance, or a mean twist of fate, absolutely breaks

me. So even if we can do just a little, to take the time and effort to raise some money for children in the UK, then it’s worth every second. If just one child gets some benefit from the fundraising, then they are that much closer to a secure and happy childhood and closer to reaching the potential that every child should have. So to support Children in Need you are all invited to our upcoming fundraiser event at Dexter’s Bar, 14 -16 Great Eastern Square, Felixstowe, on Friday 13th November at 2pm till late. A fundraising event with balloon modelling, face painting, stalls, raffle and cake sale for the littlies and then go on to live music outside from ‘Shattered’ and ‘Stone Tiger’ amongst other guests, also a Photo Booth inside. All proceeds go to Children in Need. Contact Kirsty at dextersbar@hotmail.com or phone 07919 221844

Local Martial Arts

7

Here’s an update from local martial arts instructors from ASF Training having just visited Africa to train more of their kin...

Felixstowe’s ASF Training in Zimbabwe In August this year martial artists, Aimee, Scott Fairburn, Aiki, (their 18-month-old daughter) and another martial arts instructor, travelled to Harare, capital of Zimbabwe, to teach Aiki Jutsu, to train the next generation of teachers (comprising over thirty students) at the Old Hararians Club. Aimee says, “One of the reasons we were so keen to go to Africa was because we want to encourage more women and girls to take up martial arts. There are very few female students of martial arts, and there are even fewer female instructors.” Aimee herself holds grades in multiple arts and has a 1st and 4th Dan (ranking of ability/expertise) black belt. She is the highest graded female in the UK in her style of Aiki Jutsu and has won multiple awards and medals, including Suffolk Coastal Sports Personality of the Year in 2012.

“I started training in martial arts over ten years ago. I took a short break while I was pregnant with my daughter, but returned six weeks after she was born. In Zimbabwe, I wanted to show how building skills, builds confidence in your abilities on the mat, but that also carries over to everyday life. I want to show people what dedication and practice can achieve. Practising martial arts is fun and challenging and a great way to discover new things about yourself.” Aimee and Scott teach classes in Suffolk and are planning fund-raising seminars on a variety of martial arts, to help support clubs in Africa.

Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Cut-Outs Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best...food!

Braised Kangaroo Steak by Brian Blackmore

Something a bit different for you to warm up your tummy in these winter months! Ingredients:

1 kangaroo steak per person 2 washed and roughly cut carrots 1 medium onion, peeled and roughly chopped 1 cup of full plain flour (pour in a tray and lightly brown in oven to create a lovely nutty flavour) 1 large spoon of butter 1 large glass of dry red wine and cold water 1 teaspoon of mixed herbs Red jelly (cranberry is best) 2 slices of toasted white bread (cut into small squares) 1 pot of single cream Finely chopped parsley Method:

Spray a deep frying pan with oil and heat. Place steak in and seal both sides. Place steak in casserole dish.

half the wine. Cook until most of the wine has gone. Place all back in the casserole dish.

For the sauce, melt the butter in frying pan. Add flour gradually while mixing until the butter has absorbed. Slowly add a little water at a time till the sauce is clinging to the spoon. At this stage you can add an optional vegetable stock cube. Pour the boiling sauce over the vegetables and steak in the casserole dish and place in a medium hot oven for about two and a half hours till the steak is tender. Meanwhile, make croutons with the toasted bread, cover with jelly and sprinkle lightly with parsley.

When your steak is ready, place it with the vegetables onto a serving dish and place the sauce on the stove using a low heat. Add herbs, cook for a few minutes and then add cream and the rest of the wine. When cooked, cover steak with the sauce with croutons and vegetables on the side.

By Brian A Blackmore, retired chef and author of “The Spray pan again and add vegetables and fry till brown. Downing of the Black Cat,” and before you ask, he’s Place the steak back in pan with vegetables and add never finished up in a casserole dish!!

Fireworks in Felixstowe

Ever since I spotted a warning on a box of fireworks which cautioned “Do not put in mouth” – phew, I’m so glad I spied that before I began chomping on that Catherine Wheel – I’ve always considered our behaviour on bonfire night to be giggle fuel. You see I’d have done anything as a sprog to have attended an organised firework display – sponged down dad’s Cortina, tidied my brother’s cesspit of a bedroom, even clipped grandma’s toenails (including the big one that looked like the bark on our Victoria Plum tree) – and yet have you ever watched the kids during a firework spectacular?

There they are on their father’s shoulders, brimming with anticipation, waving their sparkler (and flapping its whitehot steel shaft too close to mum’s Boden bobble-hat), wideeyed, poised to take in the approaching visual delight. Now, one can only assume that their single experience of fireworks has been on television, because the moment the first pyrotechnic screams into the air, detonates and shatters the silence with an almighty wallop of a bang….all hell breaks loose!

Almost in unison every pre-schooler drops its scolding rod of effervescent iron-fillings on dad’s back melting his Pakamac and poly-cotton cardie. The innocent smile (oh the ignorance of childhood) is replaced by a contortion of abso-

lute terror! The whizz-bang of the display is instantaneously drowned out by the wails of a three hundred toddlers. And what is it about home fireworks?

I’ll tell you, they have curious powers. What do I mean? Well who hasn’t observed their butchest big brother lift out a Roman Candle from the chocolate-void (and slightly battered and rusty) Quality Street tin?

He tramps towards the broken swing-ball and sand-pit (now used as a loo by all the neighbours’ moggies) at the bottom of the lawn. With a torch clamped in his teeth, the explosive in one hand, mum’s Crème Brulee blow-torch in the other to light it with, he rams the Roman Candle in a bucket of sand. He ignites it. At this point he transforms into Mr Bean.

He minces away from the firework (like walking normally will set it off prematurely), then it goes out. Torn between the stark warning not to revisit the firework and his disappointed siblings, blow-torch out stretched he risks his life and returns.

Eyes squinted, face gurning, he manoeuvres in a questionable squat fashion…just in case it goes off! He relights, trips over the Yorkshire Terrier and scrambles to safety behind the rotary washing line just before the grandly named Caesar’s Revenge pops out a solitary puff of gold glowing gunpowder reaching….ooh, all of three feet. Fireworks are great fun, but they can also be dangerous, so be safe and responsible folks! Fireworks are great fun, but they can also be dangerous, so be safe and responsible folks!

Town Crier News

Here are our Town Crier counterparts continuing to give us their news and updates with events on our What’s On page...

Felixstowe Town and Around News November has arrived and the sun is still shining! A wonderful golden day outside as I start to write this month’s contribution.

My joy knew no bounds when I saw that the eyesore building known as Routemaster is at last being demolished. It has been a blot on the landscape for years despite efforts to get something done about it! I have no idea what is to take its place, but at least it will be better than it has been. I attended a Cabinet briefing during September to hear about plans for Devolution in Suffolk. Devolution is about the transfer of powers and responsibilities from Central Government to the local level. Suffolk and Norfolk Councils and the New Anglia LEP have agreed to work together to put forward an expression of interest outlining areas that those Councils believe should be devolved to them as well as identifying the expected benefits of economic growth and increased local skills among other things. My interest is in how far down devolvement comes and what the benefits might be for Felixstowe. At the moment I have more questions than answers!.

in Woodbridge (interesting) Battle of Britain Service in Bury (moving). There have been other events – but those are some of the highlights. The tribute event for my Mum mentioned last month was wonderful. Between 35/40 people turned up full of reminiscences about happy times spent in beach huts and using the shop. Thanks to Kim (South Kiosk) for organising this lovely event. Coming up in November lots of lovely events. More about that next month and then Christmas! Doreen Savage.

Felixstowe Family History Society

I was invited to the launch of the new Mariners Inn in Trimley. Wow, what a transformation and lovely food too! I was also delighted to join in the unveiling of murals designed by students of the two Trimley Schools to cover the windows of Trimley Station. The volunteers involved with the restoration scheme are totally dedicated to the project.

If you wish to start or further your family history research now that autumn is here why not come and use our research room ‘The Tree House’, Maidstone Road, Felixstowe IP11 9ED (Felixstowe Academy, old entrance) . We have a large collection of books and microfiche and the Society now has a subscription to ‘The Genealogist’ so if you haven’t used this website before you can use it at ‘The Tree House’ for free. Opening times are Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am-12 noon, Wednesdays 2pm4pm and the 3rd Wednesday of every month 7.30pm-9.30pm. . If you would like to join the Society, single membership is £12 or joint membership is £16 (if you live at the same address). You can join at The Tree House or at our speaker meetings which are held at Broadway House, Orwell Road IP11 7DD on the 2nd Wednesday of most months which are open to all. Admission is free to members and £1 for non-members. For details of the next talk see this magazine’s What’s On page. The year’s full programme is available on our website www.itgen.co.uk/ffhs

Been busy as Mayor. Attended Art on the Prom (brilliant) Sea Cadets RNP (excellent) Felixstowe in Flower Awards (wonderful) AGM’s - Felixstowe Carnival (new Chairman, Sally Gallant) Orwell and District Scouts (fantastic film of the contingent of Scouts from this area to the Jamboree in Japan), a “thank you” event for customers by RB Promotions (great firm with a young dynamic leader) The Tide Mill

‘Traditional, with a twist’ were the words used by Moira Neville from Soham to describe her style of flower arranging and it certainly was different. The theme of Moira’s demonstration was ‘The Gift’. She began with the ‘gift’ of Creation. Using beautifully conditional garden foliage Moira began to build her arrangement giving it a jungley, modern feel and completed it with green chrysanthemums and red anthuriums. This was followed by the ‘gift’ of Adam, a modern hand tied bunch, suitable for a man using lots of blues. Eve was a lovely pink arrangement which had rhythm and move-

I had my loft cleared out by a social enterprise company called Lofty Heights. The contents of the loft were removed, I was given ample time to sort out what I wanted to save, bin or send to the charity shop and then what was left was then put back tidily! I can recommend this service to anyone who needs their loft sorted!

Throughout her demonstration, Moira gave us tips and urged us to be creative with our mechanics. Our next meeting will have Christmas in mind and should not be missed so don’t be late! It will be at The Old Felixstowe Community Centre, Ferry Road, IP11 9NB, on 19 November at 7.30pm when Dulcie Lofting from King’s Lynn will be demonstrating with the theme “The Spirit of Christmas”. The Practice Piece is “By the Candlelight”. I will be there to welcome you in but if you would like more information call me on 01394 282 468. Members Free; Visitors £4.00.

The clocks have gone back and what better way to spend the dark evenings than listening to music in good company? On Wednesday 4th November our Treasurer, Mike Fowle, will be entertaining us with his programme entitled “Retrospective” and on Wednesday 18th November we welcome Bob Meadows (well known to listeners of Felixstowe Radio) as a guest presenter. Bob’s title “Stolen or Borrowed? How popular composers have raided the classics” is sure to provide a fascinating musical mix. each of twenty-four rounds, which means that it’s not such a disaster if you have a round about which you know nothing! In my case, this would definitely be football… A delicious Ploughman’s supper was served at the half-time interval, and the raffle drawn at the end of the evening. A substantial profit was made which will be presented to representatives of EACH in the near future. Our September social occasion was a shared lunch at the home of Lioness Jill – which also featured a couple of quizzes. Several Lionesses went to the Palace cinema to see ‘Aida’ and some will also be going to see ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. More recently a number of Lionesses attended the Charter Lunch of the Lioness Club of Thetford and had a very enjoyable time. We are looking forward to inducting our fourteenth member at the October meeting and hope that she will enjoy the fun and companionship which goes with being a Lioness.

Our next fundraiser, a clairvoyant evening, will be in aid of Felixstowe Coastal Rescue Service Patrol and RNLI. For details of this and information about Lionesses, please email Val: vijinks880@hotmail.com

Leading Charity Makes a Visit to Felixstowe

A simple and quick ECG test could save the lives of the 12 apparently fit and healthy young (ie aged 35 and under) people that die each week in the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions. That’s the message from the leading heart charity, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

The Lions Club of Felixstowe in Partnership with Felixstowe Town Council is delighted to announce that it will be funding a CRY screening session in the Felixstowe area at the beginning of 2016. This is the first time the Lions Club has held this type of event - and initially will be open exclusively to young people aged 14 to 15 years old. The project will help to celebrate the 100 years that Lions International has been in existence (it was started in America in 1916) and it is hoped that 100 children will benefit from coming along or a free screening test (details of how parents can apply for their children to be tested will be announced soon).

Town Crier News in young and active people. The test is quick, non-invasive and painless and if necessary a further echocardiogram (ultrasound scan of the heart) can be taken on the same day to provide further clarity or reassurance. Dr Steven Cox, CRY’s Director of Screening explains: “The death of a young person is heartbreaking and devastating for any family. It is therefore essential that anyone with a potentially fatal heart condition knows about it. Without this knowledge and, if necessary, appropriate treatment, they could be putting their lives at risk as in 80% of cases there are no signs or symptoms. Sport itself does not actually cause sudden cardiac death but it can significantly increase a young person’s risk if they have an underlying condition.”

Dr Cox adds: “CRY is in its 20th year and we are so proud that our screening programme now tests around 17,000 young people annually. But we still believe screening needs to be extended to all young people. Although screening will not identify all those at risk, in Italy, where screening is mandatory for all young people engaged in organised sport, the incidence of young sudden cardiac death has been reduced by 90%.” CRY’s screening programme is overseen by Professor Sanjay Sharma, Professor of Inherited Cardiovascular Disease and Sports Cardiology at St George’s Hospital London and the Medical Director of the Virgin London Marathon. Prof. Sharma is a leading expert in cardiac conditions in young people and a heart rhythm specialist.

CRY has launched a hard-hitting, short animation to raise awareness of the impact of young sudden cardiac death. To see it for yourself go to the CRY website, www.c-r-y.org.uk. You will also be able to view a new, hard-hitting video (“Beaten”) which was launched last November, reaching out to a huge audience via social media.

Orwell Decorative and Fine Arts Society

Our next meeting and lecture, on November 4th, will feature Susan Owens with a talk entitled ‘In Spite of Bombs and Broken Windows: Queen Elizabeth and the Arts in Warfare’. Susan Owens is a writer and freelance curator. Between 2002-07 she was Assistant Curator of the Print Room at Windsor Castle. October’s meeting heard artist Stephen Taylor recount the colourful life of Victorian artist Walter Richard Sickert, pupil of Whistler and friend of Degas. An very interesting and enlightening talk. We welcome new members. The lectures last about an hour, are wonderfully illustrated and are presented by

national and international lecturers. Guests and nonmembers welcome, provided we have available space. A £5 donation is asked. For more info tel. News from FADOS

Last month we ran a really fun evening which included an entertainment, a quiz and a ploughman’s supper, and I think I can safely say that a good time was had by all including the presenters. In November we are performing a full length play called ‘Murdered to Death’ by Peter Gordon. This is a hilarious spoof on the Agatha Christie genre where a famous lady detective is thinly disguised, an Inspector has difficulty with both detection and the English language and a plethora of stereotyped characters blunder their way through an unbelievable plot.

The performances will take place at FADOS House, High Street Walton on Thursday 19th, Friday 20th and Saturday 21st of November at 7.30 p.m. The tickets will be £8.00 and will include refreshments in the interval. Tickets can be booked earlier from 01394 671 306, and will be on sale from Webbs in Orwell Road from Oct 17th. As the venue is a small one early booking is recommended.

Update news from the Felixstowe Swimming Club...

Winter League Round 1 Report

On Saturday 19th September, Felixstowe Swimming Club sent seventeen swimmers to Newmarket to represent us in the first round of this year’s winter league. Our swimmers put in a great team effort up against some strong teams but we put in a good performance despite being a few swimmers short through injury, coming equal fourth at the end of the night.

Felixstowe Waves is your local community swimming club. Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise for children due to its non-impact nature and low risk of injury. The club provides teaching and coaching for all levels of competitive swimming at Felixstowe Leisure Centre four nights a week. Our groups cater for all levels of swimming and training for ages five years and upwards including Masters (18+). Teachers and coaches are all ASA qualified.

A special mention goes out to Gaby Spalding for stepping into the 200 freestyle at the last minute, to George Spalding who at just ten years old swam 200 freestyle in the twelve and under age group. Also a big thank you to Finlay Cook and Thomas Walker who both agreed to swim up an age group and swam 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke respectively in the thirteen and fourteen year age groups so the team didn’t miss out on points for those races. Of the thirty events our swimmers achieved seventeen personal best times which was a fantastic achievement.

For further information, please email Sam on: membership@felixstowe-waves.com or visit our website at www.felixstowe-waves.com and send us an enquiry.

Notable winning swims were Paige Flower 100 fly, Joe Pattinson 200 breaststroke, Faye Hermon 200 backstroke and Thomas Boyt 200 backstroke, with our jokers being played on Paige and Thomas maximising points from those races.

Well done to everyone who attended the meeting from Felixstowe on some great swims and on the fantastic support you gave each other during the races.

15 More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor

This month’s update comes from the commercial department here at Jackamans in which I have been working for the past three months or so – how time has flown! Whilst the team HQ is in Diss for the most part, we get the opportunity to work with clients at all of Jackamans’ offices and I’m really enjoying the variety of work that comes our way.

You never know what each new day will bring for the commercial team; from multi-million pound company sales to the lease of an office for a sole trader, it has been really interesting to get to know the ambitions and concerns of all different types of client and how we can best assist them.

Recent files have included the sale of businesses as going concerns, together with advising on the potential employment law consequences, agreements between the shareholders of companies to protect the interests of those without a majority shareholding, and all sorts of commercial leases from plots for communications masts to entire business premises. I’ve already had the opportunity

to experience a wide range of commercial matters and I’m only half way through my seat!

Not only have I been busy training, but as some of you may have noticed I have also got married since my last update. It has certainly been a busy year on both the business and personal front and I can’t believe that winter will soon be upon us – where has the time gone?! It will soon be time for me to choose the area of law that I want to qualify in, ready for the end of my training contract in the summer, but with every department being so varied and interesting I’m struggling to decide. I’ll be sure to keep you posted. Fiona Mann

Matthew targeted £1000 to raise and to date, he’s managed to rasie a whopping £2071.50!

Since returning home from his travels, where his beard grew an astonishing eighteen centimetres, Matthew organised a charity Beard Shave Off Night at the 129 Bar in Felixstowe, in September to raise more money. It was a very successful night and impassioned with his high spirit to do A slightly balder Matt! good for his aunt, Matthew also shaved his head (left)!! Aunt Rosemary did the great honour of cutting off the first bit of the beard till finally, every last bit of Matthew’s manly mane (head and chin) was gone! The whole evening was a big success.

Local Person A year has past since we featured Blake Ainsley and his two younger siblings, Ashton and Max in the magazine. So now, we give you our second crazy fundrasier of the month, mother of the three boys, the wonderful Lucy Ainsley...

Local Mum Skydiving for Basic and Her Boys

Back in the Summer last year we wrote about Blake, aged eight years, Ashton aged five and Max aged one, local brothers who suffer from a very rare debilitating bone condition, multiple hereditary exostoses diaphyseal aclasis. This is a rare medical condition in which multiple bony spurs or lumps - bone tumours develop on a child. Blake has an extremely severe case of this rare 1 in 50,000 bone condition, and is prescribed oral morphine for his pain relief.

Joanne and Lucy ready for the jump...

The jump!

Blake at after one of his surgeries.

Treatment for all three children is ongoing and the only treatment centre is the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.

With no government funding available towards travel and accommodation expenses, Lucy, the boys’ mum, together with her family and supported by The Basic Life Charity, the family have been turning their hand to fundraising to pay for the travel and accommodation expenses. In October, Lucy along side Joanne Ford, took part in a sponsored sky dive raising a £900 for charity.

Blake, Max and Ashton.

Joanne is a life long friend of Lucy and is also the boys’ godmother so when the opportunity arose to support the charity and the boys, Joanne jumped at the chance. Well actually she jumped out of a plane at 13,000 feet!

Wow - Well done Lucy!! If you wish to support this local family then please pop into either of The Basic Life shops (see page 4 for details) or you can donate via the Just Giving page set up for Blake and his brothers: https://www.justgiving.com/BlakesAppeal/

Another amazing article of people using their traumatic situations to bring awareness and support to others. This is a young couple with their beautiful little girl, Sophia, and her rare condition. Here’s Sophia’s mum, Lavinia, to tell us their story...

Sophia Heeroma

Our daughter Sophia was born at Ipswich Hospital in October 2013. My husband and I were thrilled with our beautiful little girl. She was such a happy and healthy baby, we hardly heard her cry. “How lucky we are,” my husband and I thought.

Sophia a few weeks after surgery

Sophia a few days after surgery

Mr Jeelani (neurosurgeon)

We went to our regular checks with the Health Visitor and that’s when we noticed Sophia’s head wasn’t growing and it wasn’t the correct shape. We were concerned and took her to the doctors straight away. After pushing the doctor with our concerns we were finally transferred to a paediatrician at Ipswich Hospital, where we were told Sophia’s fontanelle had fused early and that she may have a rare skull condition called Craniosynostosis. She immediately transferred us to Great Ormond Street Hospital

Mr James (neurosurgeon)

Miss O’Hara (plastic surgeon) and Mr Glass (plastic surgeon)

(GOSH) in London where Sophia was diagnosed with Unicoronal Synostosis, a rare condition affecting the skull.

The skull is made up of serval pieces of bone which when we are born are not joined together. The gaps where the plates join are called sutures. When we grow older they gradually stick together. In Sophia’s case one was already fused which was far too early. Sophia’s face started to become flat on one side, creating a bossing effect on the other. Her nose and eyes were also affected and started to bend. Her face had become a “C” shape and the only way to correct it was surgery.

Sophia also had some blood tests whilst we were at GOSH, and unfortunately they found she had a rare chromosome 16 duplication disorder. In short it will give her learning and physical delays. However, we finally received a date for Sophia’s surgery, which was on the 21st September 2015.

• Massage and sports treatments • A FULL range of beauty treatments • Aromatherapy and Reflexology • Electrolysis • Hair and Make-Up for special occassions • Hairdressing, restyles and colours • Hen Packages and Childrens Parties

Sophia’s surgery was a success and she is recovering well, but it was such an emotional and frightening experience. The surgeons had re-modelled her skull to the correct shape and put it back together. These are truly remarkable people and we cannot thank them enough. All staff at GOSH were fantastic and the care given by the nurses on Koala Ward was faultless. What an amazing children’s hospital.

Well done to Lavinia, Sophia, Sophia’s family and all at GOSH. Sophia is raising money for GOSH and raising awareness of this condition. If you wish to donate to GOSH please visit: www.justgiving.com/SophiaHeeroma. You can also follow Sophia on her Facebook awareness page “Sophia Heeroma.”
