The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - May 2018

Welcome to May I love May - it always gets the ball rolling with lots of summer events. A few reasons why May’s issue floats my boat more than ever:

6

1. I had the opportunity to personally interview the lovely Giovanni Pernice from Strictly Come Dancing, (page 12). 2. The photography that’s come our way from local people is more than impressive and I’m chuffed as nuts to be able to showcase them to you. 3. We have yet another beauty of a recipe to get you salivating! So enjoy the read and don’t forget, when contacting any of our advertisers, to mention that you saw their advert in our magazine. In the marketing world, knowing where interest in their business has come from is priceless. Have a great May!

BOOK REVIEW BY SUSAN BALDANI Surprise after surprise with this new page turner that recently hit the shelves I love stories that keep me guessing, that surprise and shock me. When I’m absorbed in a great book, I tend to forget about the world around me and let myself drift into another place and time. This is what happened while reading “The Wife Between Us.” Written by Sarah Pekkanen and Greer Hendricks and released in January 2018, the jacket sleeve does warn you not to make assumptions about what is happening or the people involved, because nothing is as it seems. With this is mind, I began to read. And yes, I did make assumptions and thought I had it all figured out. I mean, it seemed so obvious what was happening and who was involved. Then a little less than halfway through the book – bam! I never saw it coming. The twists and turns that happen afterwards were delightful, while at the same time a little disturbing. But in a fun way, of course. The characters in this book have great depth and emotion. There are ex-wives, a sister and a future wife, but who is who? Don’t be so sure, as I was. There are good people and bad people, but again, which is which? I can’t say too much about the plot without giving it away, and I don’t want to ruin the outcome for anyone. But let’s just say it’s a love story with a complex mystery intertwined throughout. There’s Vanessa, Nellie, Emma, Maureen and Kate, women who all share a varied and complex relationship with one man. His name is Richard, and he has affected the lives of each of these characters immensely. But is he charming and refined or manipulative and dangerous? And what about the women? Are they really who you think they are? 4

The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - May 2018

Trying to figure out the real people behind the facades is what will make this book hard to put down. And you will be surprised right up to the very end. Just when you think you finally, at last, have it all figured out, don’t be so sure. Another surprise is always lurking as you turn the page. Sarah Pekkanen is the bestselling author of seven previous novels and Greer Hendricks was a long-time editor at Simon and Schuster; this is her first novel. Susan Baldani has an MA in Education and a BA in Psychology. She enjoys writing and in addition to writing articles about small town life, is currently working on her second book. suebaldani@yahoo.com, Twitter @mywritingwall www.mywritingwall.com.

“There is a lot of getting up and down and walking to and from for imaging and treatment, and it’s a very impersonal space,” former breast cancer patient Jo Whitelaw remembers the experience of visiting the hospital all too well. But the now 55-year-old also remembers the “amazing” care she received. She said: “The hospital was my security blanket. I got all the support and reassurance I could’ve asked for from the team. They were always there when I needed them.” Jo, from Great Blakenham, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 after discovering a lump in her breast. Initially she thought it was benign as she’d had others removed in the past. But it did turn out to be cancerous. When the lump was removed cancer cells were still found so Jo went on to have her breast removed and gruelling chemotherapy and drug treatment to fight the disease. She said: “It’s a very open and impersonal space. I remember when I first went to hospital I sat there and looked at all the people in the waiting room and felt very alone.

ARITY BALL £2.5 million Breast Care Centre at Ipswich Hospital where every breast care patient can have the best possible experience when they come to hospital. The new centre will bring all elements of breast care at The Ipswich Hospital under one roof and provide an environment where patients can be imaged, biopsied where necessary, and see their clinician in one appointment without the need to get dressed and undressed several times. There will also be new dedicated clinics for men and young people.

“The new centre could be more personal, but then there would be opportunities and spaces to talk if people wanted to.” Jo, married with two children, four grandchildren (and another on the way) has now been clear of cancer for five years. Help us build a new Breast Centre at Ipswich Hospital whilst enjoying a glamorous night. GIOVANNI PER

The Italian Stallion comes to Felixstowe as part of his his UK and Irel Here’s an exclusive interview with the man himself by our Edito BBC ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ star, Giovanni Pernice, who reached the finals of the hit show with his celebrity partner, Debbie McGee, is set to head back out on tour this year in his sensational brandnew dance show ‘Born to Win’. After the huge success of his debut tour ‘Dance is Life’ in 2017, Pernice returns with Luba Mushtuk, dancer and assistant choreographer on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, as his gorgeous leading lady, along with ‘Dancing with the Stars Ireland’ professionals Giulia Dotta, Kai Widdrington, Emily Barker, and Curtis Pritchard. The show also welcomes the fantastic Stephen Vincent and Kylee Brown from the international ‘Burn the Floor’ tour. With glitzy costumes and spectacular routines, the show, choreographed by ‘Strictly Come Dancing’s’ creative director, Jason Gilkison, and produced by Strictly Theatre Co., will tell a stunning tale of love and passion. Born on 5th September 1990, Pernice is the current Guinness World Record holder for Jive kicks and flicks, performing 55 in 30 seconds in a challenge held in December 2016. The next year, in December 2017, he broke the world record for the most Charleston swivel steps in 30 seconds, completing correctly 24. Giovanni will be visiting our very own Spa Pavilion in Felixstowe on his tour, so we caught up with him to find out where he gets his passion for dancing… When did you start dancing? I’ve always danced. When I was young I used to watch Come Dancing (a British ballroom dancing competition show that ran from 1950-1998) with my parents. I was inspired by the chemistry between the dancers and fell in love with Latin dancing. Though Jive is my favourite, Latin is my specialty. 12 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - May 2018

Where do you get your inspiration from? Musical theatre is a real inspiration for me and the last show I saw on stage was Dream Girls. I also love what I do, and dancing on television is something else. You’re dancing in front of millions and when it’s live you want to be perfect! What would you consider to be the highlight of your career? I am very blessed that people love me and that I’m good at my job. Winning the championships, working on Strictly, they’re all highlights in my life but they came from lots of challenges. What would you say has been your greatest challenge? For me, the biggest challenge was what I had to leave home. I was 14 when I went to live on my own. I went to study in the biggest academy and I achieved great results. I have one sister, she runs a studio and my parents dance too. I was supported by my parents very much. We’re a close family, so leaving home was hard, but if I didn’t do that I wouldn’t be here talking to you and doing everything I do now. Do you have any goals you’d still like to achieve? I love what I do; dancing on televsion. Dancing in front of millions on television compared to dancing in front of a live audience is very different. You want to be good and be perfect and that’s what I strive for. I’m good at my job. I’m really lucky and I’ve been blessed from God. I just want to carry on and enjoy it. There’s a lot of good points in my career… when I won the

RNICE

land tour, ‘Born to Win’. or, Mandeep Birdy championships… getting the job on Strictly. So I’m very grateful for these acheivements. What has been your favourite place to perform? Difficult - everywhere has been great. We did 32 shows last year, 56 this year in the UK and Ireland! I’ve never been to Felixstowe before and I’m looking forward to seeing the town and the people, and tasting the best fish and chips as recommended by you! Any words for aspiring dancers? I would say if you have a dream, followit. Never give up as one day it will happen. I look forward to seeing you all in Felixstowe! There are also a limited number of VIP tickets available where people can meet Giovanni before the show, get a signed print and have photo opportunities. www.giovannipernice.com.

PHOTOGRAPHY BASICS PART 2: THE GOLDEN HOUR The best time take photos: “The Golden Hour” If there’s one thing that can make or break a photograph more than any other, it’s lighting. You might have the most incredible landscape or stunning portrait model, but without the right quality of light you can still be left with a flat, dull, and uninspiring photo. This is particularly true in outdoor photography - it can often be difficult or impossible to use artificial lighting to illuminate your subject, so you’re completely reliant on the natural light.

the biggest difference in my outdoor photography. It may mean having to go out with your camera at times when you’d rather be curled up in bed, but it’s worth the sacrifice. (And so glad I’ve forced myself up on those occasions.) If I was to pick my favourite time of day to shoot, it would be the early morning as the sun is rising. It’s amazing watching the world come to life with soft beautiful light. Your photos will look amazing in this gorgeous natural diffused light. Now go explore the “magic hour”. Alan Boyle from Elm Studios

As a result, it’s critical to find the right time of day to shoot your outdoor scene. Thankfully, professional and amateur photographers have been thinking about this problem since the invention of the first camera, and have found the perfect solution - the so-called “golden hour”. The golden hour, sometimes called the “magic hour”, is roughly the first hour of light after sunrise, and the last hour of light before sunset, although the exact duration varies between seasons. During these times the sun is low in the sky, producing a soft, diffused light which is much more flattering than the harsh midday sun that so many of us are used to shooting in. This type of light produces less contrast, reducing the chances of losing parts of your subject in strong shadows or blown-out highlights. The warm glow adds a pleasing feel to the scene, and the long shadows help to pick out details, adding texture and depth to the image. As an added benefit, there are generally fewer people around at dawn and dusk than there are at other times of the day, giving you a chance to capture your images in relative peace. The first golden hour of the day will begin just before sunrise and continue for about an hour. The second golden hour will begin around an hour before sunset and finish just after. Shooting during the golden hour is without a doubt the one tip that has made May 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 17

BASIC LIFE CHARITY At the time of writing we’re basking in glorious sunshine in Felixstowe after the winter which didn’t want to leave! We hope it’s sunny for you now. Donations April was a great time for us as we were lucky enough to be selected as the charity which would benefit from some great fundraising. Firstly, Colin D’eath hosted a railway exhibition at Trimley Station and raised £455 for BASIC! Colin presented the cheque to BASIC’s Sarah during one of our weekly pop-up shops at Trimley Free Church. Secondly, we were the recipients of a magnificent £1640 from Felixstowe Trades and Labour Club as their nominated charity for last year. Secretary Jennifer MacKinnon and other committee members handed over the cheque during a night of live music. Obviously, we’re very grateful to the above and all the people who support us throughout the year. 18 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - May 2018

A regular update from a brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support High Sheriff Yet another highlight for us was a visit to the Langer Road pop-up, our Walton shop and our Depot by The High Sherriff of Suffolk. He was very interested in how we maximise the revenue from donated items and it was nice to be able to show him around. Plastic We’re almost ready to start yet another initiative in Felixstowe – this time with a view to the town becoming more aware of the use of plastic and hopefully to enable us to use less of it. Following the idea of Gemma Smith we’re working closely with those implementing plans to make it happen – so please watch this space! Have a lovely May!

FELIXSTOWE TOWN AND AROUND On the first Saturday in April two new initiatives were launched in the town. The first was the Parkrun the other the launch of the Friends of Felixstowe Library. I did not attend or take part in the first but upwards of 450 people did. Clearly, the Parkrun is set to become a very popular event in Felixstowe and taking place along the promenade it provides an ideal running area. The event will be weekly and well done to Sarah Fitch for her role in getting this great new event ‘off the ground’. I did, however, attend the launch of the Friends of Felixstowe Library along with 80+ other people. Another great idea which will support the excellent library facilities we have in Felixstowe and for the princely sum of £1 you can become a ‘Friend’. There will be a series of fundraising events in the future where the money raised will go to provide new and better facilities at the library. The café was open for the launch and I sincerely hope that in some way the new committee can get this facility up and running again - if only to serve tea/coffee and light refreshments. Notification that the Felixstowe Branch Line improvement works are about to commence came through my inbox this week. The improvements are an upgrade and will involve laying a new 1.4 km loop track between Trimley Station and Grimston Lane foot crossing and upgrade the barrier protection at four vehicle level crossings. When completed the additional line will be able to carry more container traffic to and from the port helping to take lorries off the road and increase the reliability of passenger services between Ipswich and Felixstowe – which will be great news for regular users of this service. However, this work will involve suspension of the rail service at weekends over the next two months up until 26th May and includes

Update from Felixstowe’s town councillor working over the two Bank holidays in May. Greater Anglia will be operating a rail replacement bus service between Ipswich and Felixstowe stations during the affected weekends. The weather over the Easter Bank holiday was appalling. However, this did not deter people from visiting Felixstowe – especially on Easter Sunday when the seafront was packed with cars from one end of the town to the other. I made my way down to Landguard where the Felixstowe Air Cadets held a commemorative parade at the museum to mark 100 years of the RAF. It was bitterly cold, but many hardy souls turned out to support the Cadets. It made me think about Felixstowe’s history with the RAF from the 1930’s when it was a seaplane base right through to 1962 when the RAF finally left the town. However, in 1958 the freedom of the town was granted to the service and we have lasting reminders of the town’s connection with the RAF as the Mayoral chain bears the insignia of the RAF badge making it quite unique. Wearers of the chain over the years have been proud to bear witness to our long association with this wonderful service and it is a great talking point when chain wearers from other towns get together! A Piece Of Magic For The Riverside We would like to congratulate Piece of Magic who won a silver award at last Wednesday’s ECA awards for their live broadcast event Andre Rieu 2017 Maastricht Concert. Our theatre manager Tina Wiseman was at the ceremony to accept the award on their behalf, as we are proud to say, we are their number 1 Independent cinema in the UK. “I thought The Riverside had been randomly selected to attend the

ceremony but apparently not. We did so well with our ticket sales last year, we sit nicely at the top of their list. It was lovely to be asked along in recognition of our achievements. A big pat on the back must go to our box office team who work hard to bring you an outstanding selection of films and events even though we still only have a single screen.” Book Now For The Dam Busters at 75: Live From the Royal Albert Hall On 26th February 1943 the Air Ministry gave the go ahead to the Royal Air Force’s most daring operation of the Second World War, ‘Operation Chastise’ later known as the ‘Dam Busters Raid’. BLT CHICKEN TRAY BAKE At the heart of every great community... is great food! You’ve come home, everyone is starving and something that you can throw together that has ingredients everyone loves is the ultimate challenge. Here’s a fantastic recipe for you to try on a weekday evening! Ingredients • 8 skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs (a 1kg pack) • 1½ tbsp olive oil • 150ml reduced fat soured cream • ½ x 25g pack chives, finely chopped • juice of 1 small lemon • 8 rashers smoked bacon (back or streaky)

Method Preheat the oven to 240°C, fan 220°C, gas 9. Place the chicken thighs in a large roasting tin, drizzle over ½ tablespoon olive oil and season generously. Roast in the oven for 15 minutes. Meanwhile mix together the soured cream, chives and lemon juice to taste. Season and set aside for later. Once the chicken has had its 15 minutes, add the bacon and tomatoes to the tin and return to the oven for a further 10 minutes. Now turn the grill up to its highest setting. Nestle the lettuce wedges into the tin, scatter over the torn ciabatta pieces and drizzle over the remaining oil. Pop under the grill for 3-5 minutes, or until the bacon is crisp and the chicken is cooked through. Drizzle the soured cream dressing over the chicken tray bake and season with ground black pepper.

• 1 x 180g pack on-the-vine cherry tomatoes • 1 ciabatta roll, torn into chunky pieces • 2 Little Gem lettuces, each cut in to 4 wedges

IN FOR THE LONG HAUL Random ramblings by our local lad So, some months ago I started on about air travel; I ran out of my word budget and subsequently out of the section of white A5 gloss-art I have to fill. Hence sitting here in the bubble of a Boeing 747 courtesy of Virgin Atlantic, I thought it was high-time (see what I did there… high-time… crikey, I should be writing for Radio 4), I continued and therefore finished my appraisal on the safest form of travel… is it though? Mmmm, perhaps now isn’t the time to ponder that. What was that crunching noise?!! Time to pop another Herbal Kalm I think. And breathe… it was just someone trying to flush the free bag of pretzels down the loo I think! Best place for them in my book. I’ve had a dim view of pretzels after I bit into one once and it splintered, resulting in a fragment of one ending up behind a contact lens. Now that smarts I can tell you! Have you ever been on a long-haul? That’s flight, not traipsing around Felixstowe trying to find milk and bread after a forecast for snow. Well if you have, have you noticed the garb people wear when flying? The odd thing is that folk tend to change into it once on the aircraft. You can be queuing one minute at the gate with an executive gentleman in a suit, then once at your seat sitting next to the same fellow who somehow has snuck into the 2x2 toilet cubicle and changed into a Minions onsie, Spongebob Squarepants DVT socks and Cath Kidston lavender filled eye-mask. And I won’t mention the disposable slippers from a Lake District Spa which are by now falling apart. Yes it’s an 11 hour flight, but really? Do you have to? It’s a flight not a slumber party with a group of 9 year old girls for goodness sake.

I certainly won’t be waking him when the steward comes round with the midafternoon Mini-Milk ice cream. And there are the hen parties. And as this is a flight to Vegas, there are loads. It appears they had hit the Lambrusco Rosso before they even made it to Gatwick and so the plastic tiaras and ‘L’ Plates are by now at a jaunty angle and about to fall off. Thankfully they’ve misplaced the naughty inflatables during the Weatherspoons breakfast at the airport but it always seems I’m chosen for one of the dares. The bride-to-be has a pack of cards with challenges on them and they head for me to perform some stunt. I see her coming and so bury my head in my Maeve Binchy (and no that’s not a euphemism); she’s not having any of it however. So I end up having to Salsa with the bride down the aisle whilst singing ‘Livin’ la Vida Loca’ and red-faced and feeling shamed I return to my seat after untangling my FitBit strap buckle from her jokeshop veil. Then to top it off, I finally feel I can relax and so lean forward to raise a Bloody Mary to my lips just as the pensioner in the seat in front of me (who has by now changed into something flannelette for the journey) hits the recline button sending the said drink right down my white tee. I spend the next half hour batting off stewards who are trying to help me with my nose-bleed. By Dean Wales May 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 33

In 1661, a maypole 123ft tall was put up in the Strand, London for the return of Charles II. Isaac Newton later used it as a support for his telescope.
