Note from the Editor

Welcome to the May edition of The Felixstowe Magazine

3

There’s no better way to kick off May than with the ever popular Felixstowe Vehicle Road Run aka The Vintage Car Rally! This awesome event returns to our seafront on Sunday May 1st. The rally tends to mark the beginnings of Felixstowe’s annual summer events. One of them is the Felixstowe Carnival. If you’ve wanted to participate in the carnival, take a look at page 5 to find out how. In this month’s issue, residents of our brilliant town continue to amaze me with their chartable spirit. My fellow Birdys will also be coming home to join in this spirit by training for a half marathon in Felixstowe, for a charity close to my heart (see page 9).

This month’s cover was taken by the talented Suzy Mason of flowers in bloom in the Spa Gardens. We love promoting local talent, so if you have a photo you’d like to submit for one of our covers, email us! Take care and have a wonderful May!

Local Group An incredible group striving to generate awareness for dementia in Felixstowe...

Felixstowe Dementia Action Alliance In 2012 David Cameron launched the Prime Minister’s Challenge, supported by the Alzheimer’s Society, to raise awareness about Dementia and create dementia friendly communities committed to reducing stigma and offering support where appropriate. The DAA in Felixstowe was initiated in 2015 by Heather McRoberts, a local nurse and therapist who has worked for several years supporting people with dementia. She started Hadleigh DAA several years ago following a visit to the Alzheimer’s show in Manchester with a colleague. On the way home they decided to work to create a dementia friendly town in Hadleigh where they both lived. It is now the first town in Suffolk to be recognised as working towards this goal. Heather’s dream is that Suffolk becomes the first county to be recognised as working towards becoming dementia friendly, so when she moved to Felixstowe in 2015 she set to work.

An action group was formed, which works with businesses and community groups to drive these objectives forward, with the support of Suffolk Coastal District Council, Felixstowe Town Council and Therese Coffey, our local MP. It has received financial help from the BASIC Life Charity and Felixstowe Town Council, and has been accepted in the East of England Co-op green token scheme. Felixstowe Radio, PFP Leisure, Barclays Bank and others have also been supportive. During Dementia Awareness week (15th - 21st May) our events include: Monday 16th Tea Dance at Sue Ryder Synergy Cafe, URC Tomline Road 1 – 3pm. Tuesday 17th Dementia Friends Information Session, Felixstowe Library, 11am-12noon. Wednesday 18th Quiz Evening, Trimley Sports and Social Club, 7.30 pm

Friday 20th Brainy Dogs Demonstration, The Triangle. 11am.

There will be an information stand on permanent display in the Felixstowe Library for the whole week. This will be manned by volunteers on Tuesday 17th all day.

If you would like more information about the DAA or would like to get involved, please contact Heather McRoberts on: 01394 277064 or email heather.mcroberts@yahoo.co.uk

5 In preparation for the Felixstowe Carnival 2016, here’s Sally Gallant with some information...

Felixstowe Carnival Needs You to Volunteer Every year volunteers in Felixstowe work hard to put on amazing community events – the Carnival, Art on the Prom, Felixstowe Book Festival, the Christmas Lights Switch On, to name but a few. These are hugely important events drawing visitors to the town and helping our cafes, restaurants and shops to thrive. Carnival Weekend is on the horizon: the 23rd and 24th July. The theme for the 2016 festivities is Rio Carnival and it promises to be an eye catching and colourful event. This theme should provide plenty of opportunity to get into a party mood especially as Rio is also the venue for the 2016 summer Olympic Games. We need more people - to steward, help with setting up, publicity, organising, bring in sponsorship etc. No experience is required. All we ask for is enthusiasm and a welcoming smile. In return we can assure you that you will have a great time and be part of a team that puts on a great event. What is more, you get to enjoy the atmosphere knowing that you have helped contribute to it. Souvenir Programmes will be available two-three weeks prior to the

event. This is the perfect place for companies to advertise local goods and services to residents and visitors alike, thus promoting their business and encouraging return visits to our town. Felixstowe has so much to offer; even our regular visitors don’t know what is on their doorstep.

Please help us to make the 2016 Rio Carnival in Felixstowe the best ever. For information on the Felixstowe Carnival go to our website; www.felixstowecarnival.org

appy-ppl ltd. The Felixstowe Palace Cinema Ok, so we’ve heard of lovely, little, quirky cinemas tucked away in most cities, showing European or independent films, but what about cinemas that simply put customer service first?

ARTWORK PROOF

For a long time I’ve wanted to say something about our Palace Cinema because every time I go with my family I just love it. I don’t know anywhere else that serves hot food right to your seat! Yes, that’s right - to your seat! The food is always freshly made and I always look forward to the suited gentleman that brings our food to our seat with his carefully picked apron, chef’s hat (always with a smile) and bids us adieu with the words, “Enjoy your movie.” Some people might criticise the Palace Cinema for its smaller rooms with limited seating, but I honestly wouldn’t. In fact, this adds to its charm. Besides, I love the excuse to cosy up to my husband.

The Palace Cinema also offers a membership card. For just £1 you get discounts on all your tickets and get this - when it’s your birthday they’ll invite you to go along to the cinema and have a free ticket! My family and I have now taken advantage of this many times and it makes visits to our local cinema well worth the while, and better than travelling all the way over to Ipswich for our cinematic outings.

Trusted by local families since 1925

For all you mums, dads, grandfolks, aunts and uncles who have children to look after over holiday periods, you’re never at a loss with The Palace Cinema - they always have a good schedule of showings for children’s films. And to top it all off, not only does the Palace Cinema show blockbuster films but also live performances from London theatres and some concerts! News on some much needed support for all of you charitable folk...

Free Support for Felixstowe’s Voluntary and Community Organisations If you are involved with a voluntary organisation in Felixstowe, you will soon be able to benefit from free oneto-one appointments with Community Action Suffolk (CAS) to explore funding opportunities, to find volunteers or simply to receive some general support. Claire Taylor-Haigh, CAS’s Community Field Officer for Suffolk Coastal and Waveney will be holding surgeries at Felixstowe Library each month, which began on 6th April 2016. Claire said:

“CAS has recently been involved with Felixstowe Forward, and has always recognised that there is a lot of great community work happening in the town. We want to meet as many local community groups as possible, to share our knowledge and resources and to support Felixstowe’s collective approach to tackling the town’s key challenges and opportunities.”

Claire will help support existing organisations, but is also happy to meet any individuals who have an idea or are not sure where to start with setting up a group. “Whether groups have been around for years, or are still just at the idea stage, we work with anyone who is looking

to improve the lives of those in their community and we can look at providing on-going support if needed. We can also introduce you to other local organisations, even those elsewhere in the county, who share a similar vision to you.” Helen Greengrass, Felixstowe Change Director at Suffolk Coastal District Council, and trustee of Community Action Suffolk, said:

“I’m delighted that CAS will be making regular visits to Felixstowe. Claire facilitated one of the workshops at last year’s ‘Felixstowe Forward – Taking the Town Forward’ meeting, where groups told us that there was a desire for support and learning. We can now offer this to our community and look forward to the positive impact CAS will make.” Claire will be in Felixstowe Library on the 4th May and 1st June, with more dates to come if there is the demand. To book an appointment (either thirty minutes or an hour), please contact Claire Taylor-Haigh on c.taylor-haigh@communityactionsuffolk.org.uk. Booking is essential, as slots are limited. Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Cut-Outs Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best...food!

Peanut Butter and Banana Smoothie

As part of our vigorous training for the Snowdonia Trail Half Marathon (see page 9), we must also ensure we are eating the right foods to get the nutrients we need to maximize our performance. When we first started our running journey a few years ago, knowing the correct foods to eat to ensure we were looking after our bodies, was one of the hardest challenges we faced. There are many books and online articles out there that have great meal planner ideas for runners of all abilities and distances. It’s all about picking the foods that best suit you!

Here is a great post-workout pick-me-up. The deliciously nutritious avocados mean it’s packed with “good” monounsaturated fats, while the banana helps boost your body’s intake of energy-releasing B vitamins, as well as antioxidant vitamins C and E! Ingredients

250ml almond milk

50g mashed avocado

1 large handful of spinach

1 heaped tsp smooth peanut butter

Method

Get all the ingredients washed, peeled and chopped as necessary. Pop it all in a good quality food blender (or a NutriBullet if you have one) for one minute - this should be plenty of time for the ingredients to form into a creamy delicious smoothie. Pour into a tall glass with a few cubes of ice and enjoy!

9 Training for a half marathon? Here are some good tips for you...

Running for PACE

A Charity Promoting the Inclusion of Disabled people in sport and leisure Fellow Birdys are starting their journey to train for a half marathon. It is in aid of a wonderful cause close to the hearts of the Birdy household. Here’s Suki and Bal to tell you about the cause and to give some advice on training for any of you who’d like to run a half marathon. Spring has arrived which invariably means it’s now time to get the old runners out and lose the winter pounds. Though my husband, Bal, is from Felixstowe, for the last five years we’ve lived in Melboune, Australia, where we ran a number of 14km, half marathons and the single marathon, it took a while to build up the courage. So having been back in the UK for a year we’ve already started the repeat trend. In October we ran the Suffolk Cross Trail Half Marathon, and in July we are going to attempt the Snowdonia Trail Half Marathon, all in aid of a charity close to our hearts – PACE.

PACE Charitable Trust (PACE) is a voluntary organisation promoting the inclusion of young disabled people in sports and leisure activities, with the aim to develop skills such as confidence, communication, co-ordination, strength, self-expectation, social-skills, life-skills and experiences to empower their members and give them greater control over their lives. This is more important for us as a family as our cousin has cerebral palsy. Her mother, Krishna Birdy, founded PACE nearly twelve years ago as provision in the community for disabled young people to socialize and mix with their peers was lacking.

That’s the background, so now, how do we start the training process? Our aim is to begin our short runs and then do our longer endurance runs along the beach in Felixstowe, running from Old Felixstowe to the Port. The Port is a great place to end a run, as the View Point Café is a great place to sit, get a cold drink and enjoy the view of the ships and Harwich. You’ll even find us powering along the country lanes from Felixstowe to Trimley, Kirton and beyond. As you

can imagine, a key point about the Snowdonia run is Mount Snowdon. This is where we will hope to use sand running along the Felixstowe Beach to help build the necessary strength to tackle the number of hill climbs. So a few top tips if you want to start running:

1. Buy proper running shoes, and if possible actually get fitted for them. Bal used to suffer from shin splints due to badly fitted running shoes, and having been fitted for shoes to adjust his pronation had no problems running 20km+ distances. 2. Start slow and steady, don’t be too much of an eager beaver. Start off with 3-5km distances, and take your time. The key is to put the time in versus the distance. 3. Eat healthily; see our great meal in this month’s recipe, and hydrate regularly. 4. Finally, enjoy!

If you’d like to sponsor us please use our Just Giving at: https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/birdy and as we progress with our training we will write another article to give you an update - good or bad! Suki and Bal

THE FELIXSTOWE TOWN CRIER UPDATES Felixstowe Town and Around News It is Monday and early April and my week has started with watching a film in the Council Chamber at SCDC. Cinema proprietors licensed by the District council are obliged by the mandatory conditions attached to their premises licenses to comply with the admission criteria awarded by the British Board of Film Classification. The film shown in the council Chamber was on the subject of how we view horror films encouraging viewers to interrogate a diverse range of images and sounds from a hundred years of global cinema! It is proposed to show the film later in the year at the Riverside Theatre in Woodbridge. Along with other members of the licensing committee I watched the film- can’t say I enjoyed it as I am not a lover of anything horrific or spooky – but it was necessary viewing to decide the classification category – which was an 18. Watch out for this film if the subject matter interests you. Work has at last started on the Yacht Pond area and by the time you read this article should be well advanced. Those people who have stated that another car park is unnecessary in Felixstowe should have seen the gridlock that lasted for hours along the Langer Road/Manor Road area on the 3rd April. Every car park was packed as were the streets – and this could well be normal with the summer months coming – so additional parking will be welcome – as will the events aspect of this development. The Mayor’s Civic Awards scheme has produced some excellent nominees this year and the committee who select the recipients of the award had a difficult job choosing those who were successful this year. In addition to the Mayor’s Award, there is one for a community organisation and the Ganges Youth Trophy that is awarded to a young person under the age of 18 who has made a personal contribution to their community. This is also the evening when the monies raised during the year for my nominated charities are also distributed. The awards ceremony takes place on the 4th May and will be a fitting culmination to my year in office. Two additional defibrillators have been supplied with funding from the Felixstowe Rotary Club and one will be attached to the external wall of the Leisure Centre and the other on the outside of the toilet block at Beach Station Road. A further defibrillator is being funded from a Councillor’s enabling funding and will be placed at the Ferry. These machines are vital in helping anyone who suffers a heart attack and having them strategically placed around the Town means that there is the chance to help more people who might need them. Spring really is here – at last.

Colneis Flower Club A breath of spring blew through the OFCA Centre when Helen Bird from Colchester demonstrated for us with the theme ‘This is My Way’. Helen’s skilful use of both spring and exotic flowers and foliage from her garden was a joy to watch. Her containers were interesting and unusual (often coming from T. K. Maxx) and her designs were varied, moving from Modern to Traditional. Throughout, the evening we were told about her interest in wine and wine tasting; her love of foliage and her garden, as well as giving us tips on growing, manipulating and using foliage. Helen has a wide ranging knowledge of many things and she made it a very interesting evening for everyone. By the end of the demonstration the stage was full of stunning arrangements ranging in colour from pale spring yellow daffodils to deep red anthuriums. We all had our favourites and were more than pleased if our raffle tickets let us take one of them home. Why not come along to our next meeting on 19 May when we will have a members meeting showing an unusual way to use Christmas decorations. I hope you will come along for what promises to be a very interesting evening. We meet in the Old Felixstowe Community Centre, Ferry Road, IP11 9NB at 7.30pm. Members free, visitors £4.00. For more information call me on 01394 282468. Margaret Miller

Felixstowe Recorded Music Society Before our 2015-2016 programme draws to a close with our AGM on June 1st, we look forward to more music in May with our final two presentations of the season. On May 4th we shall be showcasing a very mixed selection of favourites, old and new, with our evening of “Members’ Choice”, and then on May 18th Carol Shaftoe will take us on “A Trip to the Continent”. Our Meetings are held at the United Reformed Church Hall in Tomline Road, Felixstowe and the music commences at 7.30pm. We are always pleased to see visitors and offer a warm welcome – do come and give us a try. Felixstowe Waves Swimming Club

Our next meeting is on Wednesday May 4th when Tobias Capwell will talk on 'Heroes from the Ancient Past: Renaissance Knighthood and the Art of the Classical World'. Tobias Capwell is curator of Arms and Armour at the Wallace Collection in London.

The club held its annual Presentation night on Saturday 5th March. The evening started with a fun session in the pool with inflatables for swimmers (and a few brave parents). The fun session was followed with a medal ceremony in the Sports Hall. Cups and medals were given to swimmers who competed in the club gala’s during 2016 by the Lady Mayor Doreen Savage. They included awards for the Club Championships as well as awards for the distance events that took place later in the year. There were also a number of special awards for swimmers who did particularly well in their squads or those who overcame particular obstacles.

At our meeting on March 6th, Dr Sam Newton showed how the significant time around the month of April in preChristian England was incorporated into the Christian calendar and linked with the great feast of Easter. We even got to hear some Anglo=Saxon poetry played musically on the lyre. Join us as a member. We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months. Lectures last about an hour, are wonderfully illustrated and are presented by national and international lecturers. Guests and nonmembers welcome, provided we have available space. A £5 donation is requested. For more info tel. Jean Bradberry on 01473-710921 or email odfasmemsec@btinternet. com. Visit our website at http://www.orwelldfas.org.uk/ for latest events and news. Lioness Club of Felixstowe Having enjoyed the Lionesses’ Conference in February, several hardy Lions and Lionesses also attended the Lions’ Convention in March, which was held at the Stoke-byNayland Hotel. A great ‘hoe-down’ was held on the Friday evening, with most people appropriately attired in blue jeans and checked shirts. On Saturday morning, three Lionesses carried out the ‘meet and greet’ duties, before spending the rest of the day attending the Convention itself. That evening, a formal Banquet and Ball was held, with somewhat different outfits in evidence. All enjoyed a splendid meal and live Big Band music. An interesting feedback session was held on Sunday morning, before everyone made their way home. We are now looking forward to next year’s event. For details of events and information about Lionesses, please email Val: vijinks880@hotmail.com Jennie Roome

Faye Hermon and Stuart Evans were unveiled as the new Club Captains for the forthcoming year and we are sure they will carry on the good work from Brooke Flower and Thomas Boyt who represented the club last year. Also well done to all our club swimmers who took part in the Swimathon last month, we entered two teams this year each swimming 5km as a relay. Altogether our swimmers have so far raised a total of £248 for Sport Relief.

Felixstowe Waves is your local community swimming club. Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise for children due to its non-impact nature and low risk of injury. The club provides teaching and coaching for all levels of competitive swimming at Felixstowe Leisure Centre 4 nights a week. Our groups cater for all levels of swimming and training for ages 5 years and upwards. Teachers and coaches are all ASA qualified. For further information on joining our club, please email Sam on membership@felixstowe-waves.com or visit our website at www.felixstowe-waves.com and send us an enquiry.

Local Law More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor As always, time is marching on and there are now less than three months to go before I qualify as a solicitor, if all goes to plan. My training period really has flown by, and now that I have completed all of the required elements of the Professional Skills Course, the end is very much in sight.

For this month’s update, I wanted to share a few of the points which came up in the most recent elective part of the course that I attended. The session was all about estate administration, from the initial steps of establishing which assets make up the estate of someone who has passed away to distributing monies to the beneficiaries and concluding the matter. Whilst I have been dealing with estate administration matters for some time now, it proved a useful reminder that those not so accustomed to the process may find it a bit confusing.

You may not know, for example, that the value of jointly owned property still has to be taken into account for inheritance tax purposes, but rather than passing as set out in person’s will it goes directly to the surviving joint owner

if it is held by ‘joint tenants’. Making a gift of the property to someone else in a will is therefore ineffective, and alternative arrangements should be made such as severing the joint tenancy which will involve notice being given to the other owner. The treatment of life insurance policies is also commonly misunderstood, as those held in trust for the benefit of other people do not form part of the estate of the deceased and, again, pass directly to those named on the policy rather than beneficiaries under a will. We’ve never posted an article about mobile phone apps before, but this one is a bit special as it’s produced by a small development house from Felixstowe and has in mind folks with little ones who are in need of public baby changing facilities when they’re out and about!

Baby Pit Stop

The Local App for Parents Purple Goat Development have, as their recent brain child, the Baby Pit Stop app, which is currently available on the Google Play Store, and soon the Apple Store. Baby Pit Stop was born out of a request from a recent mother local to the area, who always found that baby changing facilities varied in their quality. The key for her was to be able to locate nearby changing facilities that were clean and safe, and not just in Felixstowe but the wider Suffolk region and beyond. The team at Purple Goat Development took on board the challenge and Baby Pit Stop was created.

Just like the community spirit of The Felixstowe Magazine, Baby Pit Stop relies on members to register facilities, comment and rate them. We already have a number of locations identified in Felixstowe, but the team would really like readers to register and upload more. As part of adding a new facility you’ll be able to upload a photo, add the address and provide some basic information. What’s great is that the app is tied into Google Maps, so once the location has been added anyone will be able to use the app to find the new location and instantaneously be provided with directions to its location. The initial data set supports the UK, US, Canada, Australia and some parts of Europe, though the team do acknowledge they haven’t captured all sites and this is where you can help.

The app is completely free to users, with the plan to add new features based on the feedback received. So please do send us your review of the app.

Examples of future updates include tracking locations that have play facilities. The team has also been working with supermarkets, major retailers and government groups

to add locations periodically. Recently they added all the Sainsbury’s and Asda locations through the UK and Australian public changing facilities, with more being added periodically. This commitment to maintaining an update database of locations is what sets this project apart, and I think you’ll find that they are one of the few apps on the market that includes locations for the UK and other geographical regions. The app is available immediately on the android store, so go ahead and download it. Join the community, comment and rate locations and if you’re feeling adventurous, upload a few new ones too. The promotion of all this great community news is made entirely possible by the support of our advertisers. Please use their services and mention their advert in our magazine whne calling them...

Local Theatre More events from our very own theatre, The Spa Pavilion...

Kicking Country Music Weekend at the Spa This month the Spa Pavilion is kicking off with a special Country Music weekend with ever-popular Brendan Shine on Saturday 14th. And keeping it country on Sunday they have Gary Perkins and the Breeze with special guests the Hayley Sisters on Sunday 15th May.

Jethro rolls into town on Wednesday 18th to celebrate his 40th year in comedy. Probably the greatest comic storyteller ever to grace the stage. Jethro beguiles and befuddles his audience with the endless stream of irreverent twaddle that has created a comedy genius. A few tickets for this memorable performance by this comedy legend are still available. Next, Shakespeare comes to the Spa for the first time ever! It’s being performed by the Odd Socks Theatre Company giving it a very modern and entertaining twist, making it accessible to families and students studying Much Ado About Nothing and Macbeth. There are teacher’s packs available and the cast will do a Q&A session after each performance with the students free of charge if booked in advance. The performances are on Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th both at 2pm.

Please mention

Finally to round off the month of May the theatre is hosting The Bee Gees Story – Nights on Broadway on Saturday 28th May at 7.30pm. A tribute to the Bee Gees through a fantastic live performance, featuring the Gibb brothers' incredible songs from over four decades - from the 60’s to the 90’s. The show gives the full experience of being at a Bee Gees concert, with a unique blend of classic hits, acoustic medleys and dance floor favourites.

Next month don’t miss The Astor Big Band, Singers and the Strictly Miller Dancers presenting a host of Glenn Miller No 1 Hits. For all of next month’s shows and the Spa’s new season line up check out their Facebook page and website. Tickets can be booked on line www.felixstowespa.co.uk or call in their box office (Thursday to Saturday 11am – 4pm) downstairs within the brand new Terrace Café. The café is open 7 days a week from 9am – 4pm and one hour before each performance too.

BASIC Life Charity

Since registering as an independent Charitable Trust in 2000, BASIC has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. For some time now we’ve been searching for a new major project to undertake. We’ve already assisted most of the care support groups and organisations in the town and also provided assistance to a large number of individuals in need. So, the challenge has been to find a service we can provide which will benefit a lot of people, be sustainable for the long term and will fill a gap in our community. After a lot of thought and deliberation we came up with a Parish Nurse for Felixstowe – employed by BASIC!

We have been long time admirers and supporters of the wonderful work done by Walton Parish Nursing and have watched them grow to their current status of having three nurses and providing an indispensable service to Walton residents. They receive referrals for low-level medical care from GP’s and hospitals and adopt a Christian approach to their work with an interest in the ‘whole person’ and not just helping with their medical condition. Their work is however, restricted to Walton residents.

We would hope to provide a similar service to the people of Felixstowe and, while we won’t be able to cover the entire town with one nurse, if could be the starting point and we shall at least be able to deal with the more vulnerable residents. So – what does this involve? Well we’ve had all sorts of meetings, research and assessments and we know that we will need to raise in the region of £20,000 to make the project a living, breathing reality. We will also need a team of volunteers who would be willing to help with any practical requests made via the nurse’s visits – such as collecting shopping etc. We are working in partnership with members of St.John’s

Local News Mother of three on a mission to raise funds and awareness for a hereditary disease...

Sophie’s Skydive for Charity In November last year, Sophie found her biological father whom she had never met before. Sadly he had recently passed from a hereditary disease known as ‘mahado joesph’ disease. Since discovering this sad news, Sophie is now on a mission to promote awareness of the disease and to raise funds to help find a cure. Over to you, Sophie. It was devastating news to find out about my father. To finally trace him only to then find out he recently passed away. The disease he had is something 1 in 150 people will have and at the moment there is no cure. So what is mahado joesph disease?

This is one of approximately thirty recognized, dominantly inherited forms of ataxia. Ataxia is a general term meaning lack of muscle control or co-ordination. Mahado joesph disease is characterized by slowly progressive clumsiness in the arms and legs, a staggering lurching gait that can be mistaken for drunkenness, difficulty with speech and swallowing, impaired eye movements, sometimes accompanied by double vision or bulging eyes, and lower limb spasticity. Some individuals develop dystonia (sustained muscle contractions that cause twisting of the body and limbs, repetitive movements, and abnormal postures) or symptoms similar to those of Parkinson’s Disease. Others may develop twitching of the face or tongue, neuropathy, or problems with urination and the autonomic nervous system.

In most individuals with mahado joesph disease, symptoms typically begin in the third to fifth decade of life but can start as early as young childhood or as late as seventy years of age. It is a progressive disease, meaning that symptoms worsen with time.

The name “Machado-Joseph” comes from two families of Portuguese/Azorean descent who were among the first families described with the unique symptoms of the disease in the 1970’s. The prevalence of the disease is highest among people of Portuguese/Azorean descent. Ataxia UK is the leading national charity for people with ataxia, their families and carers. They provide support for

those who have just been diagnosed and for those who need an ongoing shoulder to lean on. They also aim to find treatments and cures.

I believe strongly in this charity and will be doing a charity skydive at end of this September to help raise funds to find a cure for future generations. I would hugely appreciate any donations toward this.

If you would like to show your support for this charity, please make your donation on my gofundme page: www.gofundme.com/3wvtqcxg To find out more about the various forms of ataxia and how you can get support if you have ataxia in your family, visit the Ataxia UK website: https://www.ataxia.org.uk Well done Sophie - we wish you the best of luck with your fundraising and have fun with the dive!

17 New book by local author...

‘Triple Tease’ by Tony Flood Formerly Controller of Information at Sky Television, Fleet Street journalist and Editor of Football Monthly magazine, Tony Flood’s work as a leisure writer, critic and sports editor led to an array of other feats - learning to dance with Strictly Come Dancing star Erin Boag, becoming a stand-up comedian and playing football with the late George Best and Bobby Moore. Tony has interviewed some of the biggest names in entertainment and in the sporting world - Muhammad Ali, Linda Gray, Britt Ekland, Frankie Howerd, Patsy Kensit, Petula Clark, Joe Pasquale, Seb Coe, Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Bobby Robson and top comedy writers Galton and Simpson.

Tony is now retired and happily writing books and theatre reviews. We had the pleasure of meeting Tony, who has just launched a new book and here he is to tell us more... What got you into writing?

I was a Fleet Street journalist and a Sky Television executive so I have a writing background. My first book, a fantasy adventure called, The Secret Potion, was recommended by actress June Whitfield as the ideal read for Harry Potter fans.

I then wrote a celebrity book, My Life With The Stars, which contains anecdotes about Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Joan Collins, Britt Ekland, George Best, Muhammad Ali

and a host of other big names I interviewed as a journalist. What’s your new book about?

Triple Tease tells how gorgeous heroine Katrina takes revenge for the assault on her sister and comes under suspicion by the police. She then challenges compassionate copper DCI Livermore to ignore the rule book and offers to help him nail a serial killer by acting as the bait in a honey trap.

Katrina goes on a date with the main suspect, and there’s another murder as the plot twists and turns to reach a totally unexpected - and pulsating - climax. How has the book been received?

Triple Tease has received glowing reviews from actor Brian Capron (serial killer Richard Hillman in Coronation Street), The Sun newspaper’s Stuart Pink and best selling authors Peter James and Tamara McKinley. Stuart calls it, “A sexy addictive thriller that’s a real gem”, while director-producer Patric Kearns from talking Scarlet Productions says, “Triple Tease is a brilliant thriller. It’s also wickedly funny, steamily sexy and impossible to put down.” Where can you buy it from?

Triple Tease is available from Amazon as a paperback, hardback and e-version hardback. You can also find the book on the Xlibris website on: bookstore.xlibris.com/ Where can we bump into you?

Those who go to Felixstowe or Eastbourne on holiday - or better still, live in one of these lovely seaside locations - are likely to bump into me at local eateries, hotels - The Orwell Hotel, Felixstowe, is of my favourites - and theatres! I love popping down to Felixstowe Ferry where my relatives have worked and lived for over three hundred years. How do we keep up to date on your news?

You can follow me on my facebook pages: www.facebook.com/tony.flood.334 www.facebook.com/Tony-Flood-books-celebrity-sexythriller-fantasy-adventure-598099816930862/?fref=ts Brilliant stuff! Local Lad

19 Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

Windbreak Eavesdropping Picnics always tend to spark fond memories for me. There was the time my better half and I, plus a handful of close chums, pitched up on the side of a country road in the South of France with a chunk of bread, cheese, farmhouse ham and a chilled bottle of Vin Blanc; Perrier for the driver - absolute bliss. Then there was the unforgettable occasion in Beccles when...

...a duck flying overhead launched one (I’m not going to be any more explicit than that) which landed squarely on a Spam bap whilst it was open, having low-calorie coleslaw applied. Needless to say, it ended up in the empty Sunblest bag uneaten...because of the Mallard doo, not the lowcalorie coleslaw you understand, although I suspect they both have the same woody notes about them.

There’s something glorious about returning to nature, flinging out a blanket (praying it’s not the one covered in dog hair), flicking off the Crocs and munching on a Scotch egg, a cheese straw and a fig roll chaser, all washed down with a FruitShoot – a flavour of which rarely resembles that suggested on the bottle. Although if you’re my age, you’ll remember those little ribbed plastic cups, the lid of which you eagerly punctured with a lethally sharp straw, only to discover the insipid liquid contained within tasted of... plastic! Oh well, mum’s homemade pilchard scones soon got rid of the taste. Other people on picnics often make me laugh though because they tend to forget they’re in public.

We enjoyed a lunch ‘al fresco’ during a balmy Sunday the other week, out in the wilds of Suffolk, although the spot we considered to be secluded, was pretty rammed with other countryside revellers. We set up beside a group of folk who hadn’t considered that a windbreak doth not a soundproof wall make. Possibly upon being handed a tuna ’n’ sweetcorn sandwich, what sounded like an elderly lady spluttered: “Euughh I can’t eat sweetcorn anymore, I went right off it after seeing a picture of Des O’Connor in ‘Let’s Talk’ squatting down in a pair of trunks.” I’m still trying to work out the connection there; I think I must have missed something. What topped off the picnic eavesdropping for me though was a little lad all of six years old who returned to the family group after a kick about with his little sister. His grandma was in full natter mode with who I can only assume was his mum. Desperate to convey his tale, he yelled, “Shut up!” upon which he was firmly told that was rude. He was then asked what he should have said instead. Looking to the heavens for inspiration he responded with a polite: “Silence you peasant!”
