Welcome to March... God - I’m so distracted by that oat, chocolate, banana and pecan loaf on the right - focus Birdy, focus! Charlie & Anabel

BASIC Life Charity updates We’re so appreciative at BASIC for all the brilliant donations we receive, but one of the very best has to be that made by fiveyear olds Charlie Richer and Anabel Pilcher recently. They decided that any money given at their fifth birthday party should be donated to us! It was great to meet them and receive a fantastic £150! Thank you so much Charlie and Anabel and also thanks to their parents and friends who contributed. It seems the future is bright in Felixstowe!

“A regular update from this brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support” As they grow we are finding that we need more and more items – so if you have some spare (in date) canned items we’d be very grateful to receive them and we’re also looking for a very generous and communityminded fruit and veg producer!

While mentioning donations we’d also like to thank Chris Daines from Felixstowe and Walton F.C., St. Andrew’s Playgroup and all the other people who have assisted us recently.

Our Felixstowe shop has been fundraising through their tombola for a lightweight wheelchair for the use of residents and visitors in our town. We’re pleased to say they are very near their target – so watch this space!

Our Pop-Up shops, which enable all local residents to share with their community, have been going from strength to strength with a lot of new faces each week. If you haven’t tried one please come along – it’s fun!

Have a fantastic month!

We’d also like to say a massive ‘Thank You’ to all the Felixstowe volunteers who spent their bank holiday decorating their shop. It was an amazing effort and looks great.

Oat, chocolate, banana & pecan loaf If you hadn’t already guessed, we love healthy recipes! The base of this loaf is perfect for changing the main ingredients. We’ve had them with apple, blueberries and even cranberries as a filling. The loaf works beautifully as a snack, as a pudding with a dollop of ice cream, or even sliced and toasted for breakfast (although perhaps replace out the chocolate with fruit instead!). You can also do this completely gluten-free by exchanging the oats for gluten-free oats. Ingredients: 1 Large ripe banana (the riper, the sweeter) 175g oats 1 tbsp baking powder 1 tsp cinnamon 125g softened butter 125g greek yogurt 1 egg 3 tbsp agave syrup/maple syrup or 2 tbsp honey 50g cooking chocolate or chocolate chips 50g pecans Method: Preheat the oven to 200C/180C (fan)/Gas mark 6. Mash the banana with a fork and add the baking powder, cinnamon, syrup, egg and butter until smooth.

“Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best... food!” Add the oats, making sure that they are covered all over with the wet ingredients. We used chunks of chocolate and whole pecans, but these can be broken up with a rolling pin if you prefer smaller pieces in your loaf. Stir these in so that they are spread through thoroughly, adding more or less to taste, and finally add the greek yogurt to make sure that the mixture is nice and wet. Place in a greased loaf tin (or into a muffin tray if you prefer yours bite-sized), adding a few slices of banana, chocolate or the odd pecan on the top to garnish. Cook for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown on the outside - you can use a knife or skewer in the middle, which will come out clean when it is fully cooked. Reduce this cooking time for muffins to about 15-20 minutes maximum. Enjoy nice and warm from the oven or slice up and toast when needed! The Big Food Blog hello@thebigfoodblog.com

A cold call “Random ramblings by our local lad” I’m ordinarily a fairly bug-free zone but my recent diet of Monster Munch and Lemsip was indicative that Mr. Wales could become a host to acute viral rhino pharyngitis (common cold), which is fatal in most cases… well, if you’re a man, your life is almost definitely at risk from an attack from this particular organism. With the sheer volume of mucus monsters impersonating the walking dead currently, it has been an opportune time to observe the behaviour of the Kleenex brigade. Now I’m reasonably discrete if I’m at all unwell, but there are those who wish for everyone to know just how sick they are. For example there’s the ‘I’m not well’ voice. The pathetic, I’ve barely any energy left whimper, which dramatically disappears when someone announces there are birthday doughnuts in the office kitchen. On this occasion the snivelling vocal dramatically transforms into a Brian Blessed’esque “Grab me one will ya, Kevin?”… cough, cough, splutter! Then there’s the trooper. He or she’s the one who soldiers on and still comes into work spreading their viruses via doorknobs, taps and the communal staple-remover. They always want to borrow something of yours after they’ve been dabbing Vaseline on their red, flaky, nostril-gremlin infested nose. You’ve seen them doing it and they ask: “Can I borrow your TipEx?” You reluctantly say “yes” but when they return it you surreptitiously wipe

around the cap with a HandyAndy soaked in anti-bac gel. And there is always the solitary soul who hasn’t caught it and is a little miffed they’re not getting any time off. You know the one. They walk in the office with squinty eyes and will force a cough the moment they’re noticed by colleagues. When asked if they’re okay they courageously respond with a, “Yeah, I’m not sure where that came from.” Twenty minutes into the day they’ll interrupt Deirdre’s call to the wholesalers to order doilies for the executive biscuits to ask, “Is it dry in here? Has everyone got a sore throat?” At that point you can guarantee by the end of the day they’ll be acting like they’re at death’s door and won’t be in the following day. Every office has the person who you can never tell if they’ve caught the lurgy or not because they always walked around clutching a clump of toilet paper and dabbing their nose. The one who has always sniffed all the way through meetings to discuss important matters like the colour of the new pedestal mat for the ladies’ loo or constantly sneezes on the photocopier glass rendering every subsequent copy blurry. Gemma Smith Yoaa g Coming to a yoga class for the first time may seem daunting which is why Gemma’s informal home studio is ideal. She teaches in small groups, where everyone can participate. Gemma has a gentle, thoughtful way about her and cares deeply about people nurturing themselves whilst practising yoga. This gentle approach is by no means easy though; in fact, it can be quite demanding. The body is however

Gemma invited me for an informal chat where I saw the airy light studio and she talked about how the class was structured. This made me feel more able to give it a try as she offers the first lesson free, to see if people like it.

never under any stress or strain. The beauty of the class is that people can do it at their own pace and feel comfortable. Within the class we may consider floor exercises, standing exercises, balances, breathing exercises, meditation and relaxation; the main purpose being to support ourselves in our daily lives. Gemma practises yoga herself as it enables her to do all sorts of different dancing, walking, gardening and household jobs without any lower back pain. Some people have the misconception that one has to be flexible or a certain shape, weight or age to do yoga, but this is not the case. The reason why people practise yoga is to feel better in themselves; the beauty of this tradition is that it affects both the body and the mind positively. As a professional yoga teacher, Gemma has extensive knowledge and understanding of the way our bodies move and function. She has spent the past 6 years studying movement, anatomy and physiology, injury treatment and prevention, obtaining a 1st class honours degree, a Diploma in the treatment and prevention of injuries, as well as the British Wheel of Yoga 500 hour Diploma. Gemma has lived in Felixstowe for 23 years and thinks that it is a wonderful place to live. She used to teach dance and fitness here in her twenties before having 3 children. Gemma now enjoys her return to work and loves helping people to feel relaxed, refreshed and energised. A snippet from one of her clients: “I have been attending Gemma’s yoga classes for a year now and I know that they have helped to improve my posture, strength and flexibility. In addition I have recently become aware that her style of yoga has also helped my breathing, encouraged me to be less anxious and to let go of things that I cannot control.” You can contact Gemma for an informal chat using her details in her advert to the left.

The Wharf - back at home A year ago now we turned up to work to find an unexpected set of customers outside our doors - firemen. Overnight someone had broken into our store and decided in his infinite wisdom that he had to cover his tracks of burglary by sending the place on fire. Unfortunately what wasn’t destroyed was damaged by smoke or water and every item of stock and all the fixtures and fittings had to be thrown away.

10

Now after the builders, electricians, decorators and plumbers have worked their wonders we are pleased to settle back to where we belong. Over the next coming months we hope to get back all the fabulous clothing, wonderful gifts and extensive card range for our customers to peruse. A big thank you goes out to all our customers who have continually supported us over the past year and kept us going throughout the chaos.

g Mirth and more at the Spa this month Maaic, “Updates from our local theatre” Spring brings a host of new shows announced at the Spa Pavilion theatre. There’s no better time to come to the coast and support this landmark, independent theatre. This month alone there’s David Walliams’ The First Hippo on the Moon on Friday 3rd at 2.15pm for the little ones. Then there’s Cilla and the Shades on Saturday 4th, starring Liverpool-born singer Victoria Jones, singing songs including ‘You’re My World’, ‘Anyone who has a heart’ with the Shades trio swinging through a decade of hits such as ‘I Only Want to Be With You’ and ‘River Deep Mountain High’. Saturday 18th March it’s time for the Bon Jovi Experience, the world’s finest Bon Jovi Tribute band, with over 20 years of touring the world. March is also mixed with mirth on Friday 24th & Saturday 25th with Noel and Gertie. Based on the original which ran for nine years in the West End, this show has met with rave reviews everywhere. The following weekend it’s Frankie’s Guys, a celebration of Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons; they’ll be putting their own charismatic stamp on timeless classics such as, ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’, ‘Walk Like A Man’, ‘Sherry’ & ‘Oh What A Night’ - let the boys take you on a nostalgic trip down memory lane!

Looking ahead to April the Spa brings you The Upbeat Beatles on Saturday 1st and then a week later a dose of incredible magic direct from a hit season in London’s West End, the world-class illusionists that make up the Champions Of Magic team - a spectacular night of mystery that’ll keep you guessing for a long time to come. To ensure you are the first to hear of all shows in 2017 sign up for the Spa’s free newsletter via www.felixstowespa.co.uk. Book tickets by calling the Box Office, open Tue-Sun 11am-4pm on 01394 284962, or call into their two restaurants open every day until 5pm (plus two hours before each show) and enjoy a roast, a glass of something chilled in one of their bars or simply a leisurely latte at the seaside.

Competition winner! So you thought Dean’s uncrackable code from February’s issue was truly uncrackable right? Did you have a go? We did and failed miserably, however, several Felixstownians did an almighty job and cracked the code in no time at all! The name of a lucky entrant to the competition was drawn from a hat, and we’re happy to announce that our winner is... drum roll... Matthew Robertson! Well done, Matthew. Dean will be sending his signed beer mats and trophy to you soon. To put the rest of you out of your misery - the coded message was: JOHN LENNON.

Ishieya Holistic Beauty Salon “Reviewing the greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town” The lovely Ashley Scott is a qualified medical herbalist, reflexology, holistic massage and beauty therapist with half the alphabet after her name to describe all her qualifications. I heard about Ishieya Holistic Beauty on the grapevine and (as you all know) I love a little pamper, I opted for the 120 minute Classic Rhythmic Treatment (using Dr. Hauschka products), which is a full body treatment with a bit of reflexology, a facial and some treatments on the lymphatic system. You might remember the last time I visited a reflexologist... I just slip away into la la land. But this was a little different. Ashley’s treatment was very gentle but somehow it was not only relaxing (I did inevitably nod off) but it was surprisingly invigorating. The salon space is is attached to Ashley’s lovely seaside home. In the corner of the room is an electric sauna! I had a little go in that after my treatment... if the cold gets to your bones in the winter months, this infrared sauna is the perfect remedy. With gentle music and a large sprig of rosemary it’s the perfect recipe for relaxation. You must give it a go! I learnt that as a child, Ashley had always been interested in healthcare and hands-on healing. She has worked in healthcare, complementary medicine and herbal medicine.

In 2002, Ashley began to get more involved with the Dr.Hauschka range (these are the products she used on me!). Dr. Hauschka in a nutshell: he was an Austrian physician who discovered a procedure for producing natural medicines without using alcohol as a preservative, and creams with no synthetic or chemical base and scented with fragrance mixes with natural essential oils as opposed to chemical perfume. He also developed a makeup range using the above principles. This was for sure quite a selling point for me, as ‘smelly’ products always give me headaches. I can’t say for sure, but my guess is that these products would also be good for those who suffer with allergies. Ashley offers a whole host of herbal and complementary therapies as well as the more traditional body and face treatments you’d expect from any professional beauty salon. I left her salon feeling light as a feather and ready to roll into bed, though at the same time, a little more rejuvenated. If you’ve not yet tried Ishieya Holistic Beauty, do make yourself an appointment and give yourself a well-deserved treat!

March to If you haven’t yet heard, Suffolk Coastal District Council has dealt a devastating blow to beach hut owners - there is a proposed introduction of a lease premium and serious hikes to their annual beach hut rent. The propsed new charges are 100% higher, pro rata, than those paid by beach hut owners in Southwold, and 700% higher, pro rata, than those paid in the Tendring district, just a few miles south of Felixstowe. In terms of hard-earned cash, this is in excess of £8,400 for a 10-year lease! Apologies for our miffed mood on this one, but, it’s just a little crazy! As you can imagine, many beach hut owners who have had their treasured beach huts through many family generations, will no longer be able to afford them. So the Felixstowe Beach Hut and Chalet Association has organised a protest march, starting at Manor End at 10.30am on Sunday March 12th.

Beach huts are a huge part of Felixstowe’s beach culture and holiday experience, so making them so much harder to keep really does make quite an impact on those who have had these lovely little retreats in their lives for so long. We decided to collect together some stories from local people and include some fun photos. (Our personal favourite - that cheeky black-and-white photo on the right hand page!) “It was 1974 and I was expecting my first baby. That’s the end of our holidays for a bit,” said my husband before adding: “I will buy you a beach hut.” We found one on the Wireless Green for £90, fixtures and fittings included. What an investment! Family fun and long, hot summers (well, not always). But every day we spend in Felixstowe is great. The sea regularly crashed in and washed the huts away, but we survived. Look at us now, 42 years on. Wonderful sea view, amenities, all landscaped, regularly enjoyed with the extended family. Still sea swimming after all this time, sometimes by the light of the moon. Followed by fish and chips, washed down by cup of tea.” - Christine Wright, Ipswich “Last summer my grandsons were having their customary summer break with me. Oscar, who is just 5 years old, and I were walking back to the hut having collected water, when in a very serious voice he says ‘Grandma?’ ‘Yes, Oscar.’ ‘When I am VERY old and you’re dead, do

o save Felixstowe’s beach huts years! The very years we had hoped to find some peace and quiet after living very busy lives would now have the stress of the rent increase each year as well as the fact that we knew we would NOT be able to afford the proposed 10-year licence fee at anything like £8,400. As a result, should we decide to sell, the capital value of our hut would fall to a very low figure, even if we could find anyone to buy it with the lease premium having to be paid up front.

you want me to look after the beach hut for you?’” Joy Reeve, Felixstowe “We have had our beach hut for 30 years. We enjoy many happy hours with family and friends and celebrate different events, like the one shown getting the hut ready for the Queens 90th Birthday (photo above). We dressed Mum up as Her Majesty, which entertained people and put a smile on the faces of all who passed by. Family and friends dropped in all day, even the bad weather didn’t deter us. The SCDC scandalous proposal will destroy the affordability of the beach huts for lots of people. Old photographs show beach huts on the promenade in 1875. Why should SCDC be allowed to destroy that in 2017?”- Julie Downton, Felixstowe “My wife Hilary and I were passing the huts at Brackenbury Cliffs three summers ago, en route to lunch at the Ferry Inn – one of our regular jaunts. As inhabitants of Bury St Edmunds, and both having been brought up by the sea in Kent and Norfolk, we always try to visit the sea whenever we can. Noticing a ‘for sale’ sign on a hut we went and had a look. Three hours later, having met the owner and seen inside, we had decided to clean out our meagre savings and buy it. Looking back, the key thing was that we could just about afford it at around £10,000. Having recently retired we had no other savings, but decided that this chance was too good to miss. We had many happy days thereafter at the hut and while we realised that rents were a lot higher than they had been in the recent past, we settled down to add a bit of Felixstowe into our lives, regularly visiting the town and spending money in the shops. When the letter arrived proposing the new lease terms, in December, we were in shock. We read the proposals several times to make sure we had not misunderstood. But no – our recent dream had been shattered. As pensioners we would have to find huge increases in rent for the same services, such as they are, for the next eight

In summary we cannot afford the lease fee and our enjoyment in using the hut, and indeed visits to Felixstowe, have already been impacted negatively. Councillors, if they accept these proposals or anything like them, will have misjudged the situation badly. Yes, local government needs to find additional funds, but it needs to identify how to do this in a sustainable way – not by relying on some half-baked scheme dreamed up by consultants who think that we can be compared with Southwold!” - Ian Wallis, Bury St Edmunds

A 100 year-old watercolour of Brackenbury Cliffs with six huts in view. Supplied by Janet Botham, a beach hut owner from Felixstowe. Black-and-white photo supplied by Eileen Vinyard (story below).

“Our original beach hut was built by my grandfather, who was a carpenter, around 100 years ago (I am now 83 years old). So we have never bought a beach hut. Originally it was placed on the Wireless Green, close to Beach Station. We travelled to it at weekends plus a week’s holiday when I was a child (like so many other Ipswich people). Great memories over 5 generations of games and overseas relatives. But SCDC gave notice to the beach hut owners to move. We were one of fortunate ones to receive a plot near the pier. In the mid 1990s storm, it was sadly swept out to sea. A standard beach hut was its replacement on the plot allocated. The beach hut was and still is my holiday. They hold great memories and expectations for future generations! I only live on a state pension, and with these proposals, this time it will not be the beach hut being swept out to sea, but a mournful ending being swept away.” - Eileen Vinyard (Ipswich resident) If you would like to support the FBHCA, please join the march at 10.30am on March 12th.

Felixstowe town and around “Update from our local town councillor” January has gone, February has almost gone and on a dreary, dull Sunday I am sitting here thinking that when you read this article it will be March – and hey, Spring will be around the corner! At a recent Safer Neighbourhood Team meeting two priorities were carried forward for attention by the Police: drug activity (which is happening in Felixstowe) and anti-social behaviour along the seafront. This priority follows a spate of damage to beach huts last year and is now happening this year but this time involving The Hut and the chalets where youths have been seen climbing on the roofs of those buildings. Despite reporting this to the police, it appears no response occurred and no one turned up to deal with the situation. I know police resources are limited, but ignoring calls such as this does not reflect well on them or the call by the police for help from the community! Still on crime, it appears that during December the Felixstowe SNT had 258 recorded investigations. These figures cover the whole of Felixstowe and included burglary, drug dealing, arson, anti-social behaviour and assault! Whilst at a Landguard Partnership meeting also in February there was a report on the success of the foot ferry across to Harwich last year. As you are probably aware the new owner invested in a larger vessel and as a consequence made a total of 30,000 trips. This is double the figure of the previous year. This year the ferry is expanding its operating times every Friday and Saturday from June to September operating until 10pm. In November and December the ferry will operate

at weekends and school holidays for the first time. An amazing example of hard work, investment and great customer service. There is a full programme of events happening at Landguard Fort during the coming season, so do visit the website to find out more and also try the link to the Ranger’s blog which is fascinating. One of the continuing problems that the Ranger is experiencing is the disregard by some dog owners of clearing up after their animals with the consequence that Landguard Common is covered in dog mess. There is also the ongoing problem of some dog owners failing to keep their dogs on leads when accessing the nature reserve with some devastating results to the wildlife there. Two contentious issues continue to dominate my mailbox. The beach hut consultation process and its outcome, and the development proposals for Ferry Road where 198 houses are to be built. I must praise the work of the Beach Hut Association and its members ably led by the Chairman, Jo Woodward. The presentation and proposals put forward by the association in response to the cabinet report from SCDC was professional in every way. The lukewarm response from members of SCDC Cabinet was, to say the least, disappointing. The battle continues. The planning meeting to discuss the Ferry Road proposals that was deferred early in February will be back again undoubtedly, but it remains to be seen whether the very professional objections made to the proposals will have carried any weight. Road works abound around the Town but pot holes are still prevalent everywhere! Doreen Savage
