Welcome to June... Last month I took a little trip over to Barbados for an incredible business and charity convention. Not only were the views breathtaking, the weather to die for and the food so good it’s given enough material for our Big Food Blogger to last the year, but the convention really opened my eyes about creating value and help to others. It’s got me thinking...

And in terms of maximizing a town’s assets, Felixstowe does pretty brilliantly - now seeing how other countries make the most of their coastline in local festivals and events, it’s always impressive to see what we pull out of the bag! On that note, a huge congrats to all involved in last month’s Car Rally - it was amazing! Enjoy your month folks!!

That lovina g feline T.S. Eliot (and later Lord Lloyd Webber) said of Skimbleshanks the cat that: ‘He establishes control by a regular patrol and he’d know at once if anything occurred.’ Now, I’ve always been a considerable admirer of our feline friends but, like recently, it’s when I’ve been away from home for a spell that I notice mine and the little yet really annoying… er I mean endearing, things they do a tad more than usual. Well for starters, as in the aforementioned quote from the esteemed Thomas Stearns, my boys (with the sensible cat monikers of Charlie Barnaby and Frederick Quentin; yes they have middle names) own me, my partner, the house and the paraphernalia in it and frequently perambulate the premises to confirm everything is in order. If anything is out of place, you can be sure you’ll receive the stony death stare. And yes, I don’t mind confessing I am amongst those who genuinely believe our cats are planning to eradicate us. But come on, they can be cute can’t they…? Can’t they? For instance there are those lovely moments when you’ve placed the newly washed throw on your sofa (autumn oatmeal in colour) and you’re ready to immerse yourself in the refreshing calm and soft enduring fragrance of spring’s first rain, because you’ve washed it using Lenor’s ‘Unstoppables’ (aren’t they just great?). You place your derriere on the

4

“Random ramblings by our local lad” supportive yet sumptuous cushioning, curl your legs up and around and lift the mug of Mint Options to your lips. Your cherished puss enters the room, looks adoringly up at you, gently blinks, jumps up to join you and...brutally headbutts the hand holding the scorching hot chocolate drink, which is consequently scattered over your bare arms and over every exposed square centimetre of throw. And what is it with the padding for Pete’s sake?! Who is Pete anyway? One thing I am certain of is that the timing for this curious pursuit is meticulously planned. My Frederick is a master at this. I can spend the entire day in tough, impenetrable denim jeans. The moment I relax in the evening on the sofa (minus the throw because it’s back in the wash) in a pair of lightweight seersucker One Direction lounge pants, Fred’s on my lap, sharpened claws fully extended and the padding commences. Aaaaaggghhhhhhhh!!! What’s worse he’s looking me square on in the face that suggests he’s saying: “Look at me daddy, aren’t I cute?” But I’m not fooled, I know what that grin really means.

Felixstowe town and around Headline news as I write centres around the question of whether or not dogs will be banned from the beach! I have had several concerned dog owners contact me on this topic and I have to say that at the time I was unaware of some of the comments that had appeared in the press regarding this. The subject has arisen as part of an overall look at areas where it might be considered expedient to bring in Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO). These are new orders that can be established to protect certain areas against anti-social behaviour of all kinds, which includes dog fouling. The matter was discussed at a committee meeting at the Town Council recently and a working party has been established to look at the areas where it might be deemed to be beneficial to have these orders. Some years ago a similar exercise was carried out and orders known as ASBO’s were made in areas where it was considered necessary. Enforcement then became a challenge and some ASBO’s were removed after a time. The new PSPO’s will look at a range of antisocial issues, including drinking alcohol in public areas and control of dogs and dog fouling, to see if the current rules work or new solutions are needed. One of the benefits of the PSPOs is that fixed penalty notices can be issued for offences. When the working party do meet I am sure they will consider the sensitivity of dog bans generally carefully. Some interesting facts came out of the latest Safer Neighbourhood Team meeting recently. There has been a spate of commercial burglaries and dealing with these became a priority for the SNT alongside anti-social behaviour on the seafront.

Here for you every hour of every day

A suspect was arrested and since then there have been no further burglaries. Level Two are looking at an outreach programme to help with the anti-social behaviour issue. The plan is to use their minibus with adaptations to enable the vehicle to visit areas where young people are gathering and problems are being encountered and to have a set up that will provide WiFi, refreshments and an opportunity for young people to chat and seek advice. If this scheme becomes reality and there looks to be every chance that it will, it should help greatly with ongoing problems in certain areas. There were no statistics regarding the issue of parking fines as the PCSO who carries out this role has been away. However, he is now back on patrol – so watch out where you park – you could end up with a ticket as I did when I parked in Victoria Street to “nip” into Iceland! An expensive visit! The new priorities have been set as Trespassing at Anzani House. Removal of a bench near Albany Villas (ASB) and ASB on the seafront. Town Councillors were invited to have a look round the new pier building in May to see the progress that has been made thus far. It was impressive to seeing the structure from the inside! Have a great month! Doreen Savage.

Trimley Open Gardens This year’s Open Gardens Event, in aid of St. Martin’s Church, promises to be a real treat for all garden lovers and particularly to those looking for inspiration for their own little patch of heaven. Of course we have some exquisite large gardens on view, some for the first time of opening, but we are particularly pleased to have open this year a range of smaller gardens. How many times have you admired a garden feature but wondered just how you could fit it in back home?! Well, wonder no more - come and see how our garden owners have achieved their vision in their own plots. As well as viewing the gardens and talking to the gardeners, visitors will have the opportunity to buy plants for their own gardens, enjoy craft displays and sales, fortify themselves at the barbecue or with a cream tea and home-made

“Featuring the Little Gardens of Trimley” cakes, or enjoy a special Open Gardens lunch at one of the village pubs. And, especially for younger visitors, there will be the great ‘Butterfly’ Hunt. Trimley Open Gardens takes place on: Saturday 17th June (10am – 5pm) Sunday 18th (12.00pm – 5.00pm). Gardens and car parking will be clearly signed in the village. Admission £5 (children free) covers both days, so you can linger in the gardens, take your pick of the food options on offer and take lots of photos to inspire your own garden ideas. We look forward to seeing you.

Knit and Chat Last September The John Le Vay Cancer Information and Support Centre at Ipswich Hospital started a Knit and Chat Group for cancer patients, which meets every Thursday morning from 10am until midday at Trinity Methodist Church. The rationale behind setting up the group was to provide a therapeutic as well as a social group for patients and to provide an opportunity for them to do something for other people, who are also having a difficult time. Consequently, the Ipswich Refugee Centre was contacted and asked if they would welcome knitted articles of clothing for their clients. They were very pleased with the offer and, since the inception of the group, we have provided them with several packages of children’s clothes. The Seafarers’ Centre at Felixstowe Dock were also contacted and asked if they would want hats and scarves made by our knitters. Again, they were pleased with the offer and we have now provided them with many hats and scarves. The group started with two volunteers from the Cancer Centre (Brenda Shelley and Debbie Peck) and about four patients. Since September

“A fantastic therapeutic and social group at The John LeVay Cancer Information Centre” the group has grown and we now have about a dozen regular knitters on Thursday mornings. Becky, one of the knitters, says: “An informal group of this nature is invaluable to those who have been through treatment. The group offers each member mutual support and good friendships have been formed over the months. There is much laughter as well as discussion and it is rewarding to know that we are collectively bringing comfort and support to those for whom we knit.” Pat, another knitter, feels that by knitting for seafarers and refugees, we are giving something back, and Hazel says that the group has helped her overcome her sense of loneliness and isolation. Finally, Doris believes that the group has bonded so well, as members have all travelled through the experience of cancer.

BASIC Life Charity At the time of writing it’s beautiful sunny weather in Felixstowe – let’s hope is stays like this! In May BASIC were extremely proud to receive the award for ‘Exceptional Service to the Community’ from our retiring mayor Jan Garfield, at Felixstowe Town Hall. After seventeen years of ‘front line service’ to the community it was lovely to be recognised for our work. Many thanks to the Revd. Mark Reid for nominating us. At the presentation it was nice to see others who received awards – particularly Mary Wyatt and her husband for their work with Art on the Prom and the amazing Aimee Powell who was nominated by three people independently for the youth award! While in a celebratory mood we were delighted to mark our first year anniversary of our pop-up shop at St. Edmunds! Time has flown by but a lot has happened in the last year – including Tesco now bringing the smaller stores into the Fare Share donation scheme.

“A regular update from this brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support” Ben Leclerc, the Manager at our Hamilton Road store has been really supportive in what we do and he even came along to St. Edmund’s to see the work for himself. Ben has also introduced a basket into the store so customers can donate items to the popups if they wish. This will make a tremendous difference to our stock and with the additional generosity of Morrisons and Anchor Bakery we feel we can really make a change. While we’ve had the usual month of assisting those in need locally it was great to receive a donation from Sarah Fitch and the team who ran the Felixstowe Rotary Fun Run in complete fancy dress. Thank you to all involved! Have a wonderful sun-kissed June!

Do it Yourself Halloumi Fries These are all the rage in Camden at the moment, but if you’re not planning a trip to the capital why not try them at home? Ingredients: 170g pot Greek yogurt 1 lemon zested, then cut into wedges for squeezing 1 tbsp rose harissa 3 tbsp za’atar (or thyme) 75g plain flour 2 x 250g blocks halloumi, cut into fries oil, for frying handful torn mint leaves 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds

“Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best... food!” heavy-bottomed pan or casserole dish until 180C on a cooking thermometer, or a piece of bread browns in 20 secs. Working in batches, carefully lower the halloumi into the oil and cook for 2 mins until crisp and golden, then drain on kitchen paper. 3. Sprinkle over the mint and a pinch more za’atar, throw on the pomegranate seeds and serve with the lemon wedges and the spicy yogurt for dipping. Yum!

Method: 1. Mix the yogurt with the lemon zest and some seasoning, then swirl through the harissa so that you have pockets of hot and cool in the dip. 2. On a plate, stir the za’atar into the flour, then roll the halloumi in the mixture so that it’s evenly coated. Heat the oil in a shallow,
