The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - January 2018

Happy New Year! I hope you had a lovely Christmas and found a bit of time to relax with family and friends and enjoy a break. So 2018 is here and with it the exciting, (or dreaded) New Year’s resolutions! The way to go is to actually make resolutions that are realistic and one can actually give oneself a fair chance of achieving. So I wish you the best with yours! I have a few in mind I’d like to knuckle down with... you might get to hear about them soon ;) Let’s see if I’m successful in them first! One thing I can tell you is that I wish for a bright 2018, one where we have the opportunity to share far more great news about locals and our town. A very Happy New Year to you all!

BOOK RELEASE

“The day began after being woken by the ever annoying sound of the alarm clock. Once showered and dressed I was sat at the kitchen table drinking my second cup of tea pondering the events of last night, a dark mood hanging over me as the morning brought the realisation of losing my best friend...” Through the form of several hilarious diary entries spaced over one year, Mid-Life Crisis explores the sometimes-aggravating, often-hysterical life of Debbie. A simple, down-to-earth mum and housewife approaching forty, Debbie is still young enough at heart not to realise that the way she is feeling or why others grate on her could be the onset of – horrors – a mid-life crisis. As T. Jessop explains, it all began with a pair of scissors: “I couldn’t find one pair of scissors, even though there are over 10 pairs in the house. All offenders claimed they hadn’t had them, yet said missing items were found in so-called non-offenders’ rooms.” This led her to realise just how many aggravating incidents occur in everyday life and how both these and certain individuals can be viewed with warped perception as we age. More, how that was a perfect springboard for a novel. 4

The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - January 2018

Sneak a peek in Debbie’s diary in Suffolk author, T. Jessop’s hilarious and relatable novel! With themes of life, sex, family and relationships, Mid-Life Crisis offers a humorous and honest viewpoint on a certain time in our lives that everybody – at some point – can relate to. Cost: £7.99

IN THE GARDEN “Tips to keep your garden beautiful” The wet and cold days of winter are not always conducive to pottering about in the garden so this is a good month to do some planning for the new year ahead. Here are some pointers to revamp existing beds... Reflect on how you would like to improve the bed - more colour through the year, a greater variety of textures, a larger array of heights? Make a plan of the bed, marking the location of plants that you want to keep. A scaled plan is really useful as it shows exactly where plants are and how big the spaces are but that is only achievable if you go outside to measure the bed, measure where the plants are and then plot your findings onto a piece of graph paper at an appropriate scale, which can all be a bit timeconsuming so an approximate plan will probably be good enough for general improvements! Assess the characteristics of the bed. How much sunlight does it get? What direction does the bed face? How dry is the soil: dry, moist or wet? When does the bed look good? Which months/seasons could it be improved? Assessing these features helps you to make informed decisions about whether a plant is suitable for the bed. Now comes the best part - browse books, catalogues and websites to find plants that meet your criteria. Websites such as the RHS and Crocus provide plant databases which are useful starting points. Looking at pictures of different plant combinations is always very helpful. Try to select a mixture of flower forms as well as a variety of leaf shapes. As you choose your plants, pencil them onto your plan, taking care

to use information about plant spread so that you don’t try to put too many plants onto the plan. Review heights, colours and flowering months. When you are happy with your choices, create a finalised list to store with your plan, ready for plant buying in the spring. Feature plant for January Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ The fragrance of the flowers on this deciduous shrub often captures your attention before you have even noticed the shrub. Through the winter months, clusters of small pink flowers are held on bare branches making this a great plant for adding winter interest to your garden. Height 3m x 2m width. Happy gardening!

BRUSSEL SPROUT & PANCETTA MAC’N’CHEESE

14 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - January 2018

Celebrating our many cultural delights with what we love best... food! We’re not done with sprouts just yet! When I discovered this recipe I couldn’t help but fall in love with it. It’s a crowd pleasure, a child pleasure and works wonderfully for those who aren’t usually partial to sprouts. For the vegetarians dining with you this festive season be sure to check that the cheese you use is vegetarian and skip the pancetta. Ingredients: 300g Brussels sprouts 200g cooked pancetta 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 300g favourite short pasta (brown rice pasta is a favourite glutenfree option in our household) 2 tablespoons butter 1 clove garlic, minced 200ml Greek yogurt 200ml milk 500g shredded cheddar cheese 4 oz. fresh mozzarella in water, drained and cut into 1/2” pieces pinch of salt and freshly cracked pepper 150g breadcrumbs - panko breadcrumbs are best for a crispy topping Method: Preheat your oven to Gas Mark 5/190°/180°fan. Remove the brussels sprouts from the stalk and cut into quarters lengthwise. Place on a rimmed baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Roast until fork tender, about 30-40 minutes. Meanwhile, cook pasta in boiling salted water according to package directions until al dente and drain. Place your pot over a medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter until melted, and then add the garlic. Sauté for one minute, then add the yogurt, milk, two-thirds of the the shredded cheese, mozzarella cheese and salt and pepper to taste. Finally add your cooked pasta, pancetta and roasted Brussels sprouts. Stir to combine and transfer to a large casserole dish. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup cheese and breadcrumbs over the top. With your remaining tablespoon of butter, gently dot the butter over the top of the breadcrumbs for a crispy finish. Bake for 30 minutes until bubbly and slightly browned on the top. Enjoy!

THE BENEFITS OF MASSAGE It has long been accepted that massage therapy has a positive impact on our health. Millions of people all over the world in different cultures have relied on it for many years for it’s beneficial effects. As we all know, stress is major risk factor for chronic diseases including heart failure, diabetes and cancer. Regular massage treatments can significantly reduce your cortisol levels (stress hormones) and promote heart health by reducing diastolic and systolic blood pressure. If you are hunched over a computer all day, standing or sitting for long periods, your muscles will feel as though they

The perfect pick-me-up for the New Year are seizing up, resulting in aches and pains. Massage can help relieve the pressure in your muscles, allowing nutrients in your body to replenish damaged tissues and break down lactic acid that causes stiffness. Massage can also help if you have trouble sleeping, instilling calmness and relaxation. So ladies and gents if you haven’t ever had a massage before get on over to your local massage therapist for a little new year treat.

LONG DISTANCE RUNNING: HOW TO TALK THE TALK

The marathon season is looming, so make sure you’re fluent in run-speak.

Course profile - A diagram which shows the elevations of the race. Warning! Any event with a profile probably has a lot of elevation. Consider carefully whether you really want to see it beforehand!

Gait - How your feet strike the ground when you run, i.e. she’s got the gait of a gazelle/inebriated donkey.

PB - A personal best time. Note, never assume a PB is current. They have no time limit, so could date from the last decade.

LSD - Unrelated to hallucinogens, or 60s culture, but long slow runs: the staple of every marathon runner.

PW - A personal worst time. Will trigger endless performance analysis, deep depression and another race entry.

Fartlek - Not as rude as it sounds. It’s Swedish, and means randomly changing your run pace.

Bonked - Not what you might be thinking, and not a reason to take up running. This means running out of energy during a race due to inadequate fuelling.

Here’s to a fit 2018!

Intervals - A training approach that involves running a number of repetitions of determinate duration with fixed recovery intervals. Yes, it can be as tedious as it sounds. Recovery - Not rehab for runners, but rest between intervals. Always welcome, never long enough! Negative Split - Denotes a pacing strategy in which the second half of a run is faster than the first half. It’s generally a positive thing in the running fraternity. Elevation - The total vertical distance of any route, i.e. how hilly. Top tip - if you convert to metres it sounds much lower, i.e. 458 metres or 1502 feet.

Fuelling - Note, unlike ordinary folk, runners don’t eat and drink, they fuel and hydrate... and they carb load. Carb loading - Sounds scientific but actually means eating a lot of things you wouldn’t ordinarily eat for a few days before an event to increase your body’s energy reserves. Bring on the cake! Tapering - Aka pre-event rest. During the taper, training is reduced and fuelling, hydration, inactivity and carb loading are increased proportionately. A runner must be granted the freedom of the sofa and the fridge during this period. Enjoy your training! January 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 17

ROSELEA NURSERY FARM SHOP Our farm shop was opened by John Coles on July 6th 1983 and we sold our own grown salad and vegetables supplemented by fruit from all over the world. The building itself was a secondhand army hut which we transported on to the site. Due to the great support and loyalty from our customers, the business grew over the years and the range of produce we were able to offer those customers increased so that we were able to go to local farmers and growers who provided us with a bigger range of produce. This was much appreciated by our growing number of customers. In 2004 the old Dutch light glasshouse was demolished and a new one was erected on the site. This allowed us to grow a far greater range of bedding, salad and vegetable plants and be more self-sufficient in growing tomatoes and cucumbers for sale in the farm shop. By 2006 we had outgrown our converted army hut and set about planning a purpose-built farm shop. Once again we consulted our customers who gave us lots of good ideas and on August 15th 2007 the shop was opened. This allowed us to further increase our range of stock so we could offer local bread and home-made cakes, milk, jams and

18 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - January 2018

A little news from one of our yummiest outlets marmalade. We also increased the range of pet food and wild bird feeds which, again, proved very popular. Sadly, in November 2015 the founder and owner of the business John Coles passed away. This meant the business moved into another new phase with the three full time employees taking on the running of Roselea Nursery. We carry on and maintain John’s values and his ethos. We believe we provide “the freshest crops with the friendliest service” which have not travelled thousands of air miles and which are priced competitively and offer great value. This is the philosophy we have adopted and are promoting today. We always welcome new customers as well as our present loyal customers. We are also a proud outlet for The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine, and sell copies each month, so come over to pay us a visit, pick up your magazine and browse through selection of fresh local produce. Wishing you all a very happy New Year.

FELIXSTOWE TOWN AND AROUND Reflecting a little on 2017, one event which took place at the end of November. This was a “thank you” event held at the Seafarers Centre and organised by the manager, Anita Mazur and her staff for the many volunteers associated with the centre. There were 130 people in attendance and whilst the majority of those do not have a daily/weekly connection with the centre, they are part of the great army of people who support it by way of knitting woolly hats and visiting the centre with other gifts for the seamen who call there during their short stay as crew members of visiting ships to the Port. When you enter the Seafarers Centre there is a huge wicker basket that is overflowing with knitted hats of all colours to which any seamen can help themselves as they leave. As you can imagine in the winter hats are an essential on board ship. Anita and her staff also wrapped up 1500 Christmas gifts for seamen and made sure they were distributed to the ships visiting the Port. Many people are unaware of the centre and the work done there to offer seafarers some comfort and respite, food and games as well as a shop and bar and WiFi connection. Whilst I was at the event, Paul Taylor from the Hope Trust came in with two lovely pictures donated by a member of the Trust who had been connected with the sea during his working life. The big news to hit the headlines is the Felixstowe Leisure Vision prepared on behalf of Suffolk Coastal to identify opportunities for leisure and sports hub led development in and around Felixstowe and prepared for the Council as landowner and provider of leisure services in Felixstowe. The document has been published on SCDC’s website and demonstrates the potential for a multi-million pound sports and leisure development, and as a result of the decision by the Secretary of State to allow

Update from Felixstowe’s town councillor development on the Candlet/Gulpher Road land, has opened up the potential for further development on the north side of the town. It is a document worth reading and a statement made in it reads: “This document has been prepared to take forward a masterplanned approach to development in and around Felixstowe that can deliver modern Leisure Centre and Sports Hub facilities, new homes, education, open space and employment opportunities. “Fear has been expressed over the future of The Grove and Abbey Wood.” The document clearly states “At the heart of the northern development area The Grove provides a natural recreational asset and a link from town to country.” In other words it is to remain as the beautiful area that it is now. Abbey Grove is owned by The Woodland Trust – so is also excluded from the Vision. Other land ownership in the area includes the allotments owned by Felixstowe Town Council. An interesting document which is part of the Issues and Options consultation process now available on the District council’s website. There will also be ongoing engagement with communities, local landowners, Felixstowe Town Council and other stakeholders. I am sure there will be many views expressed over this document before the final document forms part of the new Local Plan to be published during 2018. Keep warm and healthy in 2018. A FERRY TALE I’m rather fond of a hop over to the continent to spend a moment or two in the company of our Crème Brûlée gorging neighbours and must confess that mine and my significant other’s favourite mode of travel is a ferry. Yep, the romantic way to elegantly glide across ‘La Manche’ (that’s The English Channel to those not versed in français,) is undoubtedly by ship... I mean who’d want to go through that tunnel? Actually, the ferries aren’t always quite as idealistic as one first imagines. Okay so you arrive at, let’s say, Dover. You approach the French Fontier Control where a homme agréable smiles and pleasantly asks for your ‘pass-por’ (it’s harder than I thought to phonetically write the French accent!). He hands it back, still with a smile and wishes you a ‘bon voyage’. You move a few metres forward to the British Border control where a geezer snatches your passport from you and grunts. He looks out of his booth expressionless and snaps: “Goin’ to France for fags I assume.” Me: “Er no, instant Crème Anglais and Chestnut Puree actually.” For some unknown reason they never believe me! You queue for the ship with countless other cars, lorries, vans and motorhomes. The ritual for all other than the HGVs it appears, is the same. Dad is trying to work out where to stick the headlamp adapters (what do they actually do?) whilst the bratty teenager is round by the boot trying

Random ramblings by our local lad to find a metal part of the car to apply the magnetic GB sticker to, only for it to slide off and him to proclaim, “It’s so unfair”. You’re on the ship. You’ve avoided the rush from other passengers to join the queue in the canteen for the dried up lasagne and you head for the shop. Now because everyone’s got up before it’s light to make it on the early crossing, they’ve also decided to forgo showering, so it’s inevitable they head for the fragrance samples in the shop – which is always called something unsuitable like ‘The Titanic Boutique’. So at this point you’re holding a wet hankie to your mouth so you can breathe through the Mélange of Dior, Calvin Kline, Versace and Old Spice (mmm my favourite) as you make your way to the Toblerone counter. Can someone please tell me what the relevance of Toblerones in ship shops is? Why? Why do they have to sell them? So, you’ve purchased your cuddly toy version of the Pride of Calais and sea sickness wrist bands because you’re sure you saw a wave out of the toilet window and you head for the car deck as instructed. The bow doors open and all those Brits spill out into the gastronomic centre of the world as you watch them head straight... for the MacDonalds Drive-Thru.

Foot Station, a domiciliary service for foot health care, was born in the Spring of 2015 when local lady and retired community nurse Sue Hutchings was looking for a new challenge. With her family grown, a long career in the NHS and an earlier qualification as a reflexologist Sue was keen to grow further her interest in feet and their influences on health. Her passion has developed and she is keen that her business enthuses the need to cherish, not abuse our feet. Sue studied at the SMAE Institute in Maidenhead, a long established college with a history of training Podiatrists, Chiropodists and in more recent years Foot Health Professionals. Coming from a health clinic environment and with a specialist knowledge in lower limb disorders, including Lymphoedema and Diabetes, providing a foot care service to her local community appeared a logical decision. Sue also highly values the ongoing support and courses provided by the college on a variety of health topics that impact on our feet and is able to keep abreast of new research and advances shaping the future of foot health care. Prevention is key with foot health and advising on foot care maintenance is as essential as is the treatment. There can be numerous potential causes for pain and discomfort in the foot and it is important to identify and

Local business woman and the art of foot care resolve the problem as soon as possible. Ignoring any soreness or persistent pain can lead to more serious complications. Sue offers a service direct to the client's home which is a convenient, timely service personalised to a client’s needs at a reasonable and competitive rate. Evening and weekend appointments are available on request for working families and Sue encourages friends and neighbours to come together offering a discount. At initial visit a medical assessment is undertaken with circulatory, and sensory testing if indicated. Cleanliness is of high importance and treatment is provided with consideration for infection control procedures. Skin care, hosiery, foot wear and orthotic aids will be discussed as indicated and, with a knowledge of local health services available, Sue can advise should a referral on to other health services be indicated. If you would like to know more on how Sue could help you please give her a call 07707651398 or email her at: hutchings_s@yahoo.co.uk. January 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 29

THE RIVERSIDE THEATRE Rigoletto Live Broadcast from the ROH Tuesday 16th January @7.15pm Tickets £15/Students £12.50 (ID req)

Live showings from the Royal Opera House and reflections of an artist’s life, in Woodbridge

Cezanne Portraits of a Life - Exhibition on Screen Sunday 28th January @3pm Tickets £12.50/Students £10 (ID Req)

Rigoletto, court jester, to the libertine Duke of Mantua, is cursed by the father of one of the Duke’s victims for his irreverent laughter. When the Duke seduces Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, it seems the curse is taking effect. Rigoletto arranges to have the Duke killed and sacrifices herself in his place. Rigoletto eagrely uncovers the corpse only to find instead his fatally wounded daughter, who dies in his arms.

Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musee d’Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cezanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least-known of all the impressionists until now.

LOCAL ARTIST - DEE SMITH

32 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - January 2018

A wonderful take on Felixstowe and Walton’s iconic buildings How long have you lived in Felixstowe? I have lived in Felixstowe for most of my life. My Dad was in the RAF so our first home was at Adastral Close, when it was still surrounded by the common. What inspires your art? I have a huge interest in the history of Walton and Felixstowe, which has inspired me to create paintings of local buildings and landscapes. I started creating paintings in the summer 2017. I work with acrylics on canvas and my first piece was St Marys Church in Walton. What do you consider is your best work? My best work was a commision request to create a painting of Framlingham College. I also like my sunscape of Landguard. Both can be seen on my facebook page. I am hoping to build up my portfolio with collections of paintings from around Suffolk, including wedding venues and historical places of interest as well as landscapes. How can readers get in touch with you? I have a facebook page called DeesArtuk, I can be contacted through the page, or readers can email me at DeesArtuk@gmail.com I am available for commissions and can take print order requests.

SUDUKO

JANUARY FACTS January is named after the Roman god Janus, who was always shown as having two heads. He looked back to the last year and forward to the new one. In January 1964 Top of the Pops first aired on the BBC. Russian Sputnik I, the first man-made object to orbit the earth, fell back into the atmosphere and disintegrated, after 92 days in space, in January 1958. The trial of Guy Fawkes and other conspirators began for the Gunpowder Plot, ending with their execution on January 31. In Czech this month is called leden, meaning ice month. The only Shakespeare plays that mention January are Much Ado About Nothing and Winter’s Tale. There is a variety of cold-tolerant winter cabbage grown in England known as January King.
