I’d love to ‘hear’ from you “Random ramblings by our local lad” Other than having to don my reading glasses (two for the price of one with coated lenses thrown in - bargain… although they wouldn’t let me have one of those little Larry Grayson chains for free) to read the preparation instructions of an Angel Delight, I consider myself very fortunate that I face few other physical challenges. Now, although I try and keep my article light and witty (well I make myself laugh at least), I wanted to shine a light on my slightly more serious side to launch the New Year. For those who don’t know me beyond the lovely Felixstowe Magazine, I work as a PR and journalist in the realms of what’s ‘poshly’ referred to as TV access services; that’s subtitling to the likes of most folk. Yes I’m afraid I work in the industry sector responsible for caption faux pas such as referring to the famous singer “engle Bert humper distinct” and the request for “a minute’s violence” instead of “silence” following the solemn announcement that the dear old Queen Mother had passed away. And there are the captioned sound descriptions such as “[loudly implied cannibalism]” and “[sobbing mathematically]”, erm, what’s that’s supposed to sound like? However humorous the gaffes in news and live TV subtitles can sometimes be (switch them

4

on for a giggle), captions open up a raft of entertainment and information to people who are deaf or suffer a degree of hearing loss. TV, cinemas, theatres and museum and other cultural venues all offer captioning for people who may otherwise find it difficult to follow spoken dialogue. One aspect of my job I’m really very thankful for is the number of deaf people I’ve met and become friends with… and their wicked sense of humour. But possibly what I’m even more grateful for is what I’ve learned as a result; things I’d never considered before, such as the many challenges faced by people with hearing loss. It’s because of this I learned British Sign Language (used by around 50,000 deaf people in the UK) and trained as a Community Fundraising Ambassador for the charity Action on Hearing Loss. Now, not wanting to be too dry, but did you know that there are around 11 million deaf or hard-of-hearing people here in the UK? At the moment that’s about 1 in 6 people and the number is continually growing. As well as funding scientific research projects and lobbying, for example, for better subtitling, Action on Hearing Loss support people with hearing loss and work towards reducing the isolation they may experience. So if your business, organisation or group would like to know about the charity and its work, or you’re looking at supporting an important charity in 2017, drop me a line at dean.wales@btinternet.com. Thanks and have a very happy and loving New Year.

Setting the pace for championing the very best in the community, The Felixstowe Magazine has grown from strength to strength, quickly fulfilling the needs of the local people and local businesses. Last year we bought the Town Crier, Felixstowe’s oldest magazine, launched our gorgeous new online events and business directory, neyuu.com, and established a thriving online community with our popular social media and website hitting on average 100,000 hits per month. This staggering success enabled us to launch our Woodbridge magazine, which is proving to follow suit in popularity as a local resource for businesses and the community. So what is it about our magazines that makes us so different? Here are just a few things: • We are dedicated to promoting the best news and stories about local businesses, people, events and community. • We’ve worked out the best balance of quality to still keep advertising reasonable and cost effective. • Everything we do is geared to help you with brand recognition. • By survey, the unique size of our magazines, lovely quality and such content as recipes and event listings are popular with readers, meaning the retainership numbers are consistently high due to the valued content. This retainership is significant as a means for business promotion.

BASIC Life Charity updates As a New Year beckons, maybe it’s a good time to reflect on all that happened in 2016 while anticipating some exciting events to come. In the last year BASIC have been involved in many aspects of community life around Felixstowe and Walton. Of course, our major project has been our unique method of food redistribution locally. Our idea of a ‘Community Pop-Up Shop’ has gained the attention of local media such as BBC Radio and ITV News. We’ve received enquiries from all over the country and it was wonderful to welcome Bishop Mike Harrison during November. The Bishop was more than impressed with the simple yet extremely effective system and said he would ‘be delighted if the model was adopted throughout the churches in the East of England’. Of course, the idea isn’t limited to churches and we would welcome enquiries from any group who wish to open their own ‘Pop-Up’. During November we opened at St.Philips in

Cheering on Andrew It’s not often that Felixstowe can boast of having an Olympic Athlete, but we’re pleased to say that local lad, Andrew Brooks has been selected for the Special Olympics Great Britain National Games being held in Sheffield next year! Andrew, 41, who has Down’s syndrome, is very excited about representing the Eastern Region and has been chosen for the Shot-Put, Discus and Javelin events all of which may lead to his selection to represent Great Britain in the 2018 Euro Games and the 2019 World Summer Games. The cost for each athlete to attend is £565 p/p. The BASIC Life Charity has very kindly sponsored Andrew for the full amount so that his carers and coach can attend to cheer him along! BASIC’s founder Graham Denny says, “We received a request for assistance and were delighted to be able to cover the cost of Andrew’s amazing achievement. We feel Felixstowe should be very proud of Andrew and we’re sure he’ll do very well at next year’s games.” We at The Felixstowe Magazine, would like to congratulate Andrew on his stellar achievement and wish him huge success in the years to come.

Wadgate Road and already the feedback has been extremely positive. Looking forward to 2017 we are excited about local Downs Syndrome man Andrew Brooks, who is the only Felixstowe athlete to have been selected for the Special Olympics which will be held in Sheffield in the summer. He has been selected for three events – Discus, Shot-Put and Javelin. BASIC have been pleased to sponsor the entire cost of Andrew’s appearance and we know the Felixstowe people will offer their warmest encouragement. Finally, can we say a massive ‘Thank You’ to all those lovely people who donated items for our Christmas sacks and shoe boxes. At the time of writing they are all ready to be packed – but by now they will have been delivered to people who will be really delighted. A Happy New Year to everybody. We hope 2017 proves to be a wonderful year for all in every way.

Stars of stage and screen flock to seaside theatre

Spiced satsumas with pomegranate & pistachio

“Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best... food! “ After celebrating 12 months in business, the Spa Pavilion Theatre in Felixstowe is looking forward to another bumper year with top-name acts flocking to the seaside to perform on their stage in 2017. The theatre has a wide variety of shows booked up as far as November 2017. Some of the highlights include: Back by popular demand this month Marshall King’s The Only Way is Elvis on Saturday 14th January from 7.30pm. Also this month Derek Acorah comes to Felixstowe with his Whispers from Heaven Tour on Saturday 21st January from 7.30pm. From Thursday 26th January the theatre plays host to the Eastern Edge Theatre Company who bring their fabulous production of Guys & Dolls to The Spa until Saturday 28th with matinee and evening performances available. Looking ahead to just one of their shows in February you have the chance to step back in time to the golden era of pop music where the jukebox roared and feet didn’t touch the floor with Lipstick on your Collar on Friday 10th February at 7.30pm. Other big names coming to Felixstowe in the New Year we can reveal are the Legendary Bay City Rollers, The Manfreds and TRextasy who have been performing all around the world now for an incredible 25 years. Finally, if you loved Pride & Prejudice don’t miss Noel & Gertie which chronicles the legendary lifelong friendship of playwright Noel Coward and actress Gertrude Lawrence. Featuring songs, sketches and scenes from some of Coward’s finest works, Noel and Gertie is on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th March with matinee and evening performances available. To be the first to hear of all shows in 2017 by signing up for the Spa’s newsletter go to: www.felixstowespa.co.uk or for tickets call the Box Office open Tue-Sun 11am-4pm 01394 284962.

By now you’ve probably had your fill of turkey and Christmas pud, so we have a deliciously easy recipe which works nicely for dessert or even for a healthy breakfast. Another excellent excuse to take advantage of this yummy dish is that satsumas are also in season in January - all the better! If you are preparing a breakfast we recommend substituting the ice cream with greek yogurt for a protein boost. To make a two-person serving of caramelised satsumas here’s what to do. Ingredients: 4 satsumas (or oranges), peeled and halved Honey 1 tbsp cinnamon 1 tbsp nutmeg 1/2 pomegranate 1 handful of unshelled pistachios Ice cream (or yogurt) to serve. Method: Place your halved satsumas or oranges into an oven-proof dish - the beauty of cooking fruits from the orange family is that they become juicier when cooked, so be sure to keep the juice for serving as it makes a delicious ‘sauce’. Drizzle honey over the satsumas and sprinkle the cinnamon and nutmeg on top, then place under a high grill for about 10 minutes until the tops are just starting to go black at the edges. Once the satsumas are done place them into an appropriate serving dish, ensuring you pour their juice over the top. Scoop out and scatter over the pomegranate seeds and a few pistachios. Finish off with a generous scoop of ice cream or, for breakfast, greek yogurt. Enjoy! The Big Food Blog hello@thebigfoodblog.com

Local photographer Mr Skits Photography Tell us your name and what kind of photography you do... My Name is Adam McCallum. I do a mixture of landscape photography, nature and gaming photography. How did your photography take this direction? Well when I was around 16 I started going for a lot of walks in the Felixstowe and Trimley countryside - when I would come across a view I liked the look of, I’d just snap a quick photo with my phone. After doing that for a few months I found myself putting more thought into what I was taking a picture of and I just seemed to have a grown a talent for it over time. It was only last year that I really decided to take things with my photography further with making my Facebook and Instagram pages because of the positive feedback I was being given from friends and family. What inspires your photography? The positive feedback I get, it really motivates me. That and the rest of the photographers that I follow on Facebook and Instagram. We’re praising one another’s work and it’s a great community to be a part of. Is there anything about Felixstowe that inspires your photography? Something I tell myself and others in photography is there are those who see a puddle and only think of rain and keep walking and then there are those who see a puddle and can admire the clarity of it’s reflection. Felixstowe is full of natural beauty. One of my favourite places to go is the Trimley Marshland area, the River Orwell always has something to offer. What project have you been particularly proud of? I think what I’m mostly proud of is how I’ve kept going and continue to keep trying. My Instagram page has been growing pretty well with over 800 followers - to some that may not sound a lot but to me it means a lot. Any claims to fame? Haha, well I don’t know anyone famous but my one of my photos was featured on the front cover of The Felixstowe Magazine earlier this year and now here I am with another amazing opportunity. Anything else you’d like readers to know? I don’t want to sound cheesy or anything and I know I’m not one of the greatest examples but for those who have a dream but don’t think they can make it, you won’t know until you try. I didn’t think I’d ever come this far with my photography when I first started but here I am being offered amazing opportunities such as writing for this brilliant local magazine. Don’t give up in what you want, if you want something chase it. Nice! How can readers contact you? My email is adam.skits@hotmail.com. Readers can also follow me on my social media: Facebook: Mr Skits Photography and Instagram: Mr_Skits_Photography This article was sponsored by Kerseys Solicitors www.kerseys.co.uk. Felixstowe town and around The festive season has started. The town looks lovely with the Christmas lights – great work from The Lions – the shops are displaying delicious Christmas food – late night shopping on the Fridays leading up to Christmas about to start and a pile of Christmas cards sitting on my dining room table waiting to be written! The headline news this month is the report about to go before Suffolk Coastal Cabinet to approve a new scheme of charging and tenancies that will have a detrimental effect on many beach hut owners if it goes ahead. The rental charges are scheduled to increase by 10% year on year reaching a maximum of £7k at the end of the suggested 1 year license and 9 year lease period. There will be many, many hut owners who cannot meet this type of financial demand as many are pensioners but add to this the change from the £32.60 transfer fee when a hut is sold now to 3 times the annual rent for the same service again if this scheme is approved. As you can imagine the inboxes of all Felixstowe Councillors are full of angry comments at the proposals as well as letters coming through the post in a similar vein. Those of us on the District council will be doing our best to persuade Cabinet members against voting for these proposals. By the time you read this it will have happened one way or the other. The subject of the indiscriminate parking in the town was discussed at a Safer Neighbourhood meeting in December. The Police agreed with all the comments made but admitted that lack of staff made it impossible to “police” the town on a regular basis. However, when possible, special constables and a PCSO are doing their best to monitor the situation. I got

caught up in a gridlock situation trying to exit Victoria Street into Hamilton Road to be faced with a large lorry parked on the corner by the café. A stream of cars – including a taxi – parked on the left hand side (not allowed) and restricting the flow of cars trying to turn into Hamilton Road from Wolsey Gardens, with traffic trying to drive down the road to Bent Hill unable to move! Some drivers are so thoughtless at times. An online conversation has started about the condition of the shelters on the seafront. I hear that there is some plan to do work on these in the future – but what that is and what it entails I have no knowledge. An update on the Wetherspoons site from that which I gave you last month is that it is not just the gas main across the site that is holding up progress but certain planning requirements that have yet to be agreed with the District Council. The Post Office has now moved into W.H. Smith. A controversial planning application was received to remove the doors and replace with automated bi-fold doors painted white. This application was vehemently opposed by Felixstowe Town Council as the shop is in a conservation area and the proposals would be intrusive, out of character and the insertion of a proposed ATM would combine to destroy the very essence of the current frontage. We have already lost some of our traditional shop fronts – most famously Westbrooks (now Hughes). I hope we win this battle. Happy New Year to everyone. Doreen Savage

Preserving precious family stories Many of us have family stories which we would love to pass on to our children and grandchildren. But how many actually get around to writing them down? Two Suffolk women are helping people save their stories in professionally written and designed keepsake books. Family Stories is a local business set up by Caroline Putus and Elizabeth Aldridge who have been friends for over 30 years and have

worked together on many writing and publishing projects. This experience, combined with an interest in people’s histories fuelled by stories of strong women in their own families, led to the creation of the business. “It was my great aunt who sparked my interest in family stories,” explained Elizabeth. “At the end of the Second World War, Grace gave up her teaching job to run a 3-acre smallholding in Rutland, where she kept pigs, chickens, ducks and geese. But at the age of 44, her dreams were shattered when she developed a life-changing illness and became too disabled for heavy work. She wrote a book about her experiences, and I found it fascinating to learn about the past life of the elderly lady I remember from my childhood.” Caroline added, “We know from our research that there’s a tremendous interest in personal histories but people often don’t really know how to record their stories in a way that makes them interesting and readable for others. We listen to people’s stories and help them sort through their memories. We write their story, add photographs and family mementoes and put everything together in a full colour, beautifully designed coffee table book.” Family Stories customer Peter W commented, “Our family book is a very personal window on history and is so attractive that it’s easy to either browse through the highlights or read from cover to cover.” Prices start at £750 for writing, designing and printing three copies of a Family Stories book. SPECIAL READER OFFER! Five extra copies of your book free of charge, for orders placed before 15 March 2017. Claire Barr Reflexology “Reviewing the greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...” Claire Barr Reflexology is an independent holistic treatment service in Felixstowe. Having limited knowledge about reflexology, but always hearing about great results, I decided to book myself in for a ninety minute session with Claire. For those of you who don’t know much about reflexology, it’s a non-invasive complementary therapy working through gentle massage techniques of the feet which helps you to relax. Just some of the symptoms reflexology can help with include reduction of stress, pain and digestive problems, increased immunity, circulation and, in my case, some amazing and well-needed sleep! When I arrived, Claire offered me a hot cup of herbal tea and took me to the lovely treatment room where she went through a series of questions so she could recommend the best treatment for me. As we talked Claire told me about her passion for reflexology, which grew out of her own medical troubles which significantly improved through the reflexology techniques she now in offers in her own practice.

As the treatment on my feet began, I was thoroughly impressed - Claire’s perfect combination of experience in her craft, natural air of calm and wonderful healing hands set me off to sleep within ten minutes - I was well and truly knocked out! That was without a doubt, the fastest ninety minutes I’ve ever experienced. How I wish it was more! When it comes to genuine care and helping a customer feel comfortable, while giving an effective treatment, Claire goes above and beyond. I highly recommend Claire, and know she’ll do a great service for you.

Local author

JM Hewitt “An update from talented local author” One year after the success of my debut crime fiction novel, Exclusion Zone, I’m pleased to announce a further two-book publication deal. The first of these, The Hunger Within, was published on 23rd October by Endeavour Press in Kindle format, with paperbacks hitting the shelves in time for Christmas. I had it in my mind as I set to work that any research wouldn’t be as interesting as that of my Chernobyl based thriller, Exclusion Zone. I was wrong! The Hunger Within is based around the hunger strikes of the prisoners in HMP Maze in 1981. As soon as I began to write the novel I knew that factual correctness and authenticity were going to be absolutely vital. I also knew that of the 23 men who took part in the hunger strikes, 13 of them survived, and chances were they were still alive today, so I set about tracking them down - before long I had made contact with an original, surviving, hunger striker called Laurence McKeown. In 1981 Laurence, a former I.R.A gunman was serving a life sentence in Maze prison. He was happy to share his story with me, and what a tale it was. Laurence didn’t back away from any details about the physical side effects of the hunger strikes, even though they made for uncomfortable reading. These protests and the ramifications were raw and very real. The protests also bought up many questions for me, both as a reader and a writer. Could I believe in a cause

so much that I would die for it? I didn’t think so, but as a novelist I had to make the writing true and to do this meant that my own feelings had to be put aside to enable the emotions of my characters to come through. It is much the same dilemma in the second book that Endeavour Press are publishing. The Duty is slightly more angled towards the Domestic Noir genre, with a woman, Kate, who realises just how trapped she is by the boundaries set by her husband, in the home and life that they share. This is an unfamiliar setting for me, that of mental abuse and restriction, and I’ve put a lot of time into discovering the depths that desperate people will go to for an escape. For both The Hunger Within and The Duty, I enlisted the mentorship of friend and award winning local author, Ruth Dugdall - to have the expertise of somebody who has a decades worth of experience in this industry is priceless. I also had a short story published in a horror anthology, entitled Twisted. Twisted became practically an overnight success, going straight into the charts and knocking Stephen King off the number 1 spot. Exclusion Zone, The Hunger Within and Twisted are all on sale in both Kindle and paperback via amazon.co.uk. On 26th April 2017, I will be appearing at Ipswich County Library to talk about my novels and my publishing journey over the last year. I hope to see you there.
