The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - February 2018

Editor’s Note With Shrove Tuesday on the 13th and Valentine’s Day on the 14th, this month just can’t get any better by splurging on two things I love most... food and love! As you may know by now, I’m a sucker for romance and have included some lovely photography and stories in this month’s issue. I’d like to give a special mention to my friend Stephen and his new wife, Nijole for tying the knot recently. This month’s cover is a little ‘Hoorah!’ to them both. I was particularly honoured to interview one of Radio Caroline’s original Djs, Johnny Lewis, which you can read on page 32-33. We also have an extensive amount of local exclusive offers for our readers, so have a good look through your February issue and make use of these fantastic local businesses!

SINGING SAFARI Can’t sing? Don’t be so sure! Join choir master Chris Rowbury on a six-week Singing Safari. Collect songs from around the world to build a choir from scratch to perform in Woodbridge in March. Anyone from 16 to 80 who loves to sing is welcome – whether you only sing in the bath or are already in a choir. Come to fun rehearsals each Thursday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The project starts on Thursday 15th February at Woodbridge Methodist Church. Research has shown that singing together is brilliant for your health: it reduces stress, boosts the immune system, helps those with breathing problems, improves mood, and cures baldness (well, maybe not the last one!). There are no auditions, no need to read music and nobody has to sing solo. Learn songs from Africa, Eastern Europe, America, the South Seas and beyond. All in glorious, unaccompanied harmony. 4

The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - February 2018

Instant choir – just add people! There will be a small charge of £35 for the series of six workshops, final rehearsal and performance. Try the first rehearsal free to see if you like it before paying for the six sessions. Chris is well known for his informal singing workshops across the UK. He has proven time and again that anyone can enjoy singing together, whatever their background or experience. Join the Woodbridge Singing Safari and be part of a supportive group. Have fun and a bit of a laugh, find your natural voice and discover new songs from other cultures. Feel the joy of creating rich and vibrant harmonies, sing your heart out and make some new friends along the way.

Building on the strength of the previous two Festivals, Felixstowe Sewing School are delighted to announce that the Festival of Fabric III will take place on the 3rd March 2018. Prestigious fashion historian, Dr Chris Boydell, principal lecturer in Design History at De Montfort University, will be giving a lecture on one of her speciality subjects: the wonderment which is 1940s and 1950s ‘Horrockses’. Could it get any more exciting? Of course it could! To help visitors achieve the perfect ‘look’ Hair Raid Shelter are coming to town! With years of experience in recreating the hair and beauty styles of bygone days, the team are providing demonstrations and entertainment in a two-hour long session at the Festival, so you can finish off your whole look beautifully.

TIMINOLOGY Finding love, hope and inspiration On 10 February 2007, Tim Leach’s life changed forever when a freak skiing accident almost killed him. Until that point, Tim – who was born and brought up in Woodbridge and attended Framlingham College - had planned on becoming a lawyer and was filling the time after completing his degree living a care-free existence. He was, in his own words, a ‘negative, hopeless layabout’! While enjoying a ski season in France, Tim, an experienced skier, skied off a cliff. He broke his neck and back, snapped his cruciate ligament, shattered his left ankle and smashed his head so hard that his only hope of survival was to be placed into an induced coma, where he remained for three weeks. “I genuinely believed I was the unluckiest person on Earth – however, my injuries could have been significantly worse,” says Tim. “I now view the accident as a blessing in an extraordinary disguise and something that has led me to a place I probably would never have reached, had it not occurred.” In the years after his accident, Tim was aware that his friends were beginning to settle down. Deciding that not having found true love was hindering his happiness, on a whim, he signedup for a day’s course with a pick-up artist in London. The morning began on the streets of London, with Tim being encouraged to approach women and ask for directions. “I managed that without a problem,” remembers Tim. “Then we were told to compliment some lucky lady and I managed to tell a very attractive young woman what a lovely hat she was wearing.”

Having explained to the organisers that he wanted to develop his ability to meet and talk to his ‘perfect match’, Tim was told that the final speaker would be able to help him. He was intrigued… “A young man entered the room,” remembers Tim. “His opening line, ‘none of you will successfully find your perfect match until you completely understand and find yourself’, reverberated within me; before leading us through a brief guided meditation.” It was a day which catapulted Tim’s life in a different direction and, since then, he has developed a daily meditation practice and through this he’s pulled together the tools by which he lives a more fulfilled life. Tim is now ready to share what he’s discovered with his book, Timinology (to be published on Monday 12th March 2018; you can pre-order it on Amazon).

“Timinology is my approach to leading a happier life; no matter what life throws at you,” says Tim. “Today, I love myself, which means that I can now wholeheartedly love other people and be loved in return, making me the happiest I have ever been.” Tim is now in a happy relationship with a young lady called Whitney. “This amazing girl has consistently stuck by me and her love for herself has indeed transferred itself onto me and has systematically opened up a spot in my heart for her,” says Tim. “Whitney has taught me to love in ways I never thought possible.” Tim is now offering a life consultancy service and runs eight-week mindfulness courses for anyone wishing to become more affiliated with it. He also gives talks to students, teachers and parents about living a happier life.

BUBBLE & SQUEAK WITH SPRING GREENS & BACON

Spring greens are in season this month, so although this may not be your first choice of veg for the dining table it is packed with vitamins and minerals and incredibly versatile for mains and side dishes, plus it’s easy to cook. As a tip, don’t discard the stems of the leaves - instead slice them up very thinly and include in your recipe as they will taste slightly sweeter than the leaves themselves. Bubble and Squeak dates back in the UK as early as 1809 and is a firm favourite for using up leftover veg, so if you’re not a big fan of spring greens you can substitute it for peas, cabbage, carrots or sprouts if you prefer. Ingredients: 100g chopped, cooked spring greens (or similar veg) 100g cooked white potatoes 1/2 chopped onion 100g of chopped bacon/pancetta 1x poached egg

Celebrating our many cultural delights with what we love best... food! until soft. Add the spring greens and soft potatoes, any other veg you might be using and your chopped bacon or pancetta, pushing the ingredients into small round patty shapes as they cook. Keep the pan on a medium heat and fry until they form a nice crust underneath. Turn over the patties and fry the other side so that both sides are crispy. Meanwhile, poach your egg and once the patties are brown and crispy on both sides serve together for a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner!

Method: Add a little oil to a frying pan, or use a non-stick pan to lightly fry the onion 14 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - February 2018

IMPROVE YOUR HEARING: CHANGE YOUR LIFE! Did you know that tackling your hearing loss can change your life? It’s no grand boast: we hear these words all the time from patients who enjoy the benefits hearing aids bring. They tells us of the joy of again hearing all the sounds that make up everyday life, birds singing, raindrops on the windowpane and leaves rustling in the breeze. Gone is the embarrassment of constantly having to ask people to repeat what they said, and the red-faced moments when they thought they did hear, but in fact, mis-heard. And they say they can once more enjoy the TV or listen to radio or music because their partners stop complaining that the volume is far too loud. But most of all, they lose the sense of isolation they had felt because they weren’t able to communicate with family and friends. They no longer avoid social gatherings because they don’t have to struggle to hear, and take part in, conversations because of the background noise. The first step in enjoying all these benefits is to make an appointment have a hearing test and discuss the dozens of options that are available to you to help with your hearing loss. Our range of hearing instruments is wide and our audiologists are highly trained to

By Karen Finch, Managing Director and audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre Ltd help you make the right choice to suit your hearing needs, lifestyle and pocket. But most important of all, once your new hearing aids are programmed for you and fitted, you can try them out for a while with a refund if you don’t agree that they HAVE changed your life. Free hearing assessments in Felixstowe & Woodbridge This month my team and I are encouraging anyone struggling with their hearing to come for a free hearing assessment in a relaxed atmosphere, have a coffee with us and simply see what help there is available. Join us at our Woodbridge clinic (Framfield Medical Centre) on either Wednesday 14th or Thursday 15th February (9am-5pm), or join us at our Felixstowe clinic (Grove Medical Centre) on either Monday 26th or Tuesday 27th February (9am-5pm) and save yourself having to pay our normal consultation fee of £20. Appointments are essential and can be booked by calling 01473 230330.

BASIC LIFE CHARITY Hello again from your local Charity! This month we thought it would be good to share a little of what goes on with BASIC in the background away from the shops. We always try to make as much money as we can so that we can help as many local people as possible – every single book, DVD and CD together with other items which look like they may sell well on eBay are collected very early each morning from both shops and taken to our depot. Each day we’re ready to start at 7:30am! Believe it or not we check every single one of the books, DVDs and CDs using a barcode scanner and we make up boxes for our list of seven different online purchasers. A courier either collects the boxes or we drop them off at the Post Office or collection shops.

Update from Felixstowe-based charity We collect from Tesco’s at Martlesham and in Hamilton Road on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. We collect bread from our friends at Anchor Bakery on Fridays and Mondays and we also collect from Morrisons on Mondays. We also have our major collection from Fare Share in Ipswich on a Monday afternoon.

We also check books with Amazon and we usually have over 1000 books listed for sale with them at any time.

The food is sorted at our depot and then we deliver to the pop-up at Trimley Free Church each Monday morning and then also to St.Philips Hall, Wadgate Road and St.Edmunds Church, Langer Road each Tuesday.

With eBay our team photograph the items and list them each day. We have well over 700 items listed at any given time with around 50 items ending each and every day – yes, seven days a week!

Most of the collecting, sorting and delivering is done in our spare time and sometimes we’re working to the limit – but it’s worth it to see the difference the work is making locally.

As we’re sure you can see sorting, packaging, addressing and posting all of these items is quite a logistics exercise!

We’re so grateful to the local community for donating such wonderful items. We’re always amazed at what we find among the black bags and boxes and it’s lovely to be able to turn the items into cash which can, in turn, make a real difference in people’s lives.

Then we have the food! Our food banks are always operational at each shop but in addition we have a continual need for new food to service our three pop-up shops which are held weekly. 18 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - February 2018

FELIXSTOWE TOWN AND AROUND What lies ahead for Felixstowe as we go into 2018? Well, increases in Council Tax are a certainty. It appears that all authorities, town, district, county and police will be levying an increase in the amounts we will be required to pay to support the various services we receive through those organisations and what that will amount to for us all personally remains to be seen. The decision to increase taxes is never taken lightly, although for many people on fixed incomes finding additional outgoings is not easy. That said, we require the services we receive from the various organisations mentioned so “biting bullet” springs to mind. One additional charge that we will be facing will be that to be levied for the first time in Suffolk Coastal on garden waste. The charge is to be £43 per annum for 2018/19. Since 2015 SCDC has maintained the “free” garden waste collection service and borne the cost of the reduced Recycling Performance Payment support. Now, however, SCDC is under increasing financial pressure with dwindling central Government support, and providing the organic waste collection and composting service currently costs SCDC over £1.2m a year. This cost has further been increased by £200,000 p.a. following a reduction in support for recycling organic waste previously provided by the County Council. The new service will be entirely voluntary with residents having to “opt in” and register to receive the service. Thinking about it on a personal level, I have decided that I will “opt in” as it will cost more than £43 p.a. in petrol to run up and down to the recycling centre in Carr Road with all the garden waste I accumulate during the gardening season and having a bin is so much easier. A timetable for introducing the charge is being drawn up which will include details of how and when

Update from Felixstowe’s town councillor residents can join and pay should they wish to receive the service. On the 31st January it will be 65 years since that terrible night in 1953 when 41 people died in the Langer Road area when the river bank was breached along the Orwell and the wall of water that had built up as a result of extremely high tides all down the Suffolk coast burst through the river wall. The resulting deluge of water came across what is now the Port of Felixstowe land and flooded the whole area of Carr Road, Langer Road and many of the side roads leading up to the seafront from Langer Road. However, as many of these side roads have a 1.3m rise from Langer to Sea Road those properties that were at the higher level remained dry. At the time I was living with my parents in Manor Terrace and none of the houses there were flooded, although those half way up Manor Road were. The only thing I can remember of that terrible night was the gale force wind that blew tiles off the roof and which came through my parent’s conservatory roof. The height that the water reached in Langer Road can be seen by the line of dark blue tiles that runs along the top of the wall of the Memorial Garden in Langer Road. A memorial concert at St. Johns Church and Service at the flood memorial garden was held at the end of January to remember those who died that terrible night. EASTCLIFF CARPETS Celebrating 17 years serving Felixstowe and Woodbridge Eastcliff Carpets was established in 2000 as a independent Carpet and flooring retailer working out of a Van, taking samples to people’s homes and work places. In 2002 Gareth Cook decided to set up his shop in a small unit in Trimley St Mary village, and soon after moved to 109 High Road West where Eastcliff Carpets Showroom is today. In the last 17 years Gareth has seen his business grow and has built a reputation in and around his home town of Felixstowe but Ipswich Kesgrave Martlesham Woodbridge and Framlingham too. Eastcliff expansion and reputation has been built on honest, friendly advice and Gareth says it’s something he asks the staff to continue. Staff at Eastcliff Carpets boast a combined experience of over 100 years and a good mix of different types of flooring is offered. As an independent retailer Gareth works closely with suppliers to offer the best service available. Eastcliff Carpets look to continue to move forward in 2018, and keeping up with the ever changing trends is important, but continuing to provide a quality of service with good old-fashion customer service is vital and this is what we aim to do throughout the Suffolk coastal area. GETTING PLASTERED AT THE POOL Ooh yes, the smell of the chlorine, the sensation of the rough little mosaic tiles under your verruca, there is nothing like hitting the swimming pool (or local baths as my dear old mum would say) to keep fit. Now although my corner bath (in white now but I understand following Brexit we’re all going to have to revert back to popular British Avocado) is large, I can complete a length simply by laying down in it which besides being daft, when I tried it I ended up with a mixer tap up one nostril… it could’ve been worse. So the public pool it is. There is something about entering a building housing a commercially sized pool. As I mentioned in my opening there’s the smell, but also they have a sound about them too don’t they? That reverberation of screaming children making your toes recoil with the thought of contracting something fungus-based. Fit looking, smiling folk jogging around in the latest gym gear; all of it just kind of gives you that motivated, I’m-goingto-do-this feeling, doesn’t it? Doesn’t it? To be honest, approaching fift— erm, being a man of a certain age, I have somewhat contorted views of pools based on what they used to be like. Remember the changing rooms? Apart from being shared by the local butcher as a chiller, I’m not sure they’d ever seen a mop, J-Cloth or Cillit Bang (Bang! And the dirt is gone). The 3 second rule would certainly not have applied when dropping a Murray

Random ramblings by our local lad Mint on the floor back then. And there was always the chewed up tissue bits hanging from the ceiling like little Kleenex-based stalactites. I never actually saw anyone do it but could be assured there’d always be more the next time I went along. The foot bath. I don’t know if personal hygiene was any worse back when I was a kid but nowadays you walk through a narrowed section of corridor leading to the pool with luke-warm, wispy jets of gently chlorinated water aimed at your tootsies. I remember, and I’m sure some of you do, the half a mile sunken section of floor containing a brownish/orange fluid leading from the frozen wilderness of the changing rooms. You’d glare at it with a sense of doom. For one it would be icy cold and secondly, you’d just know if you didn’t make it to the other end in time you’d lose three layers of skin or indeed an entire limb if you lingered too long. Then there was the pool itself. If the tangle of someone else’s moulted hair didn’t get you, the stray Corn-Plaster would. It was an encounter with the latter when I was a mere boy that taught me to swim for the rest of my life with my mouth closed!

THE RIVERSIDE THEATRE Whilst you may think panto season is well and truly over, the Company of Four Musical Theatre Society are busy rehearsing and putting the final touches to their traditional family pantomime which is taking place at The Riverside Theatre in Woodbridge, during February half term from the 9th–17th February. With a 13 show run there is still time to grab those tickets – but don’t leave it too late as their panto always sells out, especially the matinees! This year the well renowned company present their latest version of a beautiful and classic fairy story. It’s the tale of Cinderella, who works in the house of her overbearing Stepmother and her larger-than-life twin Stepsisters. With the help of her dear friend Buttons, she gets through each day in the town of Lower Uppingham, dreaming of a much better life. One day, Prince Charming comes to town accompanied by his friend Dandini and a couple of his entourage called Bitz & Bobz and, by a strange quirk of fate, they meet and instantly fall in love. But as with panto tradition the course of true love doesn’t run smoothly – the Prince forgets to ask for her name, Cinderella’s ticket to the ball suffers a misadventure and, despite the instructions of her Fairy Godmother, Cinderella loses track of time

Upcoming in Woodbridge... It’s Panto time again — Oh, yes it is! when she gets there… will everything turn out alright in the end? You’ll have to come along and find out! Cinderella opens on Friday 9th February and runs through every day (apart from Monday 12th) to the 17th. Performance times are 7.30pm for the evening and 2.30pm matinees on Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th, Wednesday 14th, Friday 16th and Saturday 17th. MAKING HISTORY RADIO CAROLINE An interview with Johnny Lewis Given the recent licensing of the once pirate radio station, Radio Caroline, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to interview one of her legendary DJs. Born and bred in Ipswich, Johnny Lewis grew up around farming. In his teens he founds his way to Hertfordshire where he first encountered the Radio Caroline team. Johnny was soon promoted from a general dogs body, expediting jobs like finding new generators for the ship to finally becoming a DJ on 17th December 1977. “I was always interested in off-shore stations. The first ever radio I did was at The Stable Club in ‘76, in Woodbridge. I loved radio. I remember my granddad had a beach hut in Felixstowe, so I was always looking out for Radio Caroline which at the time was being broadcast from the ship, Mi Amigo. Listening to the excitement of the stations growing up in the 60s was incredible. I always listened to Radio Caroline and also Radio North Sea International. There was a buzz in radio in those days. That lacks a bit these days. It’s a job now as opposed to a bit of fun and you can really feel that difference. Radio Caroline is a fun station to be on! It’s like a hobby and I always look forward to DJ’ing. “Radio Caroline has a fantastic history; by autumn of 1964 Caroline had more listeners than the 3 BBC networks combined. Alan Crawford, founder of Radio Atlanta, was furious about this and aired right next to Caroline’s wavelength. As Caroline had the audience, a merger was seen to be inevitable. Crawford’s ship soon became Caroline South, while the original Caroline became Caroline North. In the ‘80s it broadcast from The Ross Revenge (named by her previous owners at 32 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - February 2018

Ross Fishers), originally a trawler. In fact, that ship was the biggest side trawler ever built and was involved in the Iceland-UK Cod War around 1973.” When the authorities favoured Icelandic law to protect its fishing zone, the Ross Revenge went into a period of idleness. After years, a 300 foot transmission mast was fitted, the body was painted bright red, and the ship set sail to broadcast in international waters in 1983 as the station for its new owner, Radio Caroline. Johnny says, “We grew so popular, but as a pirate radio station, we were condemned by the government. In 1985, the government actually tried to stop us by cutting our supply lines, but we still kept on going. We hit the news because of this… it was like 20 million free ads… we were front page of every paper in the UK and Europe!”

At 12 noon on December 22nd 2017, Radio Caroline was back on air for a ten-hour special, broadcast from the radio-ship, Ross Revenge. After 53 years of hard work, the station is now a full-time AM channel! When asking about the plans for Caroline, Johnny said, “Now that the station is licensed we stay on the ship and broadcast from the ship Friday to Sunday. “The one thing that we really enjoy is the freedom you get, which you don’t get on other stations. People still listen to it as they haven’t heard the songs for such a long time. It’s not predictable like other radio stations and we can let our personalities shine. “Time is passing and us old-timers are getting on… we’d like to encourage fresh blood, so younger people are involved to come to the ship and broadcast. We do tours on the ship and one thing youngsters always say is that it isn’t what they thought and it’s amazing on the ship – the buzz and atmosphere.

“We’d like to give lessons on how to do radio and the history on radio… and do this on the ship! We’d make it as fun as possible. There’s new technology and also there’s the lovely old technology like vinyl records and reel to reel tapes. It’s fun to show the kids the old technology as well as new. “I’ve actually taught media in Margate, and with no qualifications except life experience on board Caroline! It’s great how young people love our story. I think that’s the way forward with Radio Caroline – by taking kids who want to learn about radio to the ship itself. It’s something totally different. “I’d like to thank everyone who has been part of Caroline all these years, and more recently in supporting her licensing. It’s a moment that’ll live with me for the rest of my life.” www.roundsandsounds.co.uk www.radiocaroline.co.uk Photos courtesy of Johnny Lewis and friends. Trinity Players @7.30 pm Trinity Players are performing The Silhouette by Simon Brett at Trinity Methodist Church. In Act 1 of this ingenious thriller, actress Celia is questioned by the police about the murder of her husband. But Act 2 takes place before the murder, and all our expectations are turned on their heads! Who is silhouetted? This original play will surprise and perplex! Published by Samuel French.
