Pop Chorus

Welcome to our February issue... I hope you are all getting into the swing of 2017! Of course February is the month of romance with Valentine’s Day falling on the 14th, but did you know some of the more obscure dates that also fall in February…? First Saturday of the month is ‘Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day’. The 8th February is ‘Kite Flying Day’, followed closely on the 11th by ‘Make a Friend Day’. Mostly ridiculous, there are actually loads of these days listed online, so no excuses for getting bored!

Felixstowe goes pop! Soon, the people of Felixstowe will be able to indulge in singing chart hits and favourite pop tunes together as quirky local choir Pop Chorus which launched in the town in January following success in Ipswich, Framlingham and Kesgrave. The Suffolk-based feel-good singing groups are open to adults of all abilities, unashamedly singing

The Orwell Art Group Now running for 15 years, our painting group is looking for new members to join The group runs on the first Monday of the month, from 1-3pm in St Macy's Church Hall Walton. Have a go at painting, even if you haven't painted for years. Be our guest, we will provide you with paints paper etc. There will be people there to help you, whether it be painting flowers, beaches or boats and we sometimes have a professional artist come along to give demonstrations which we can take part in. We are a mixed group of various ages and paint in different media, water colours, acrylics, oils and pastels so come along and see what you can do. You could be very surprised with lovely results. The hall is easily accessible for disabled people, with the car park behind the Church.

great pop songs in harmony to backing tracks. There’s no audition and members don’t need to read music or have any experience. Recent repertoire has included Take That, The Beach Boys and Beyoncé. Rehearsals are very informal, with an emphasis on fun and gently developing members’ singing skills. Regular performances continue the relaxed vibe and members can choose whether to take part or not. Pop Chorus was founded by professional singer and vocal coach Yula Andrews. She started the first group in Framlingham in 2012, and the entire choir has now grown to over 150 members, with groups also in Kesgrave and Ipswich. The choir are proud community partners with St Elizabeth Hospice, and fundraise year-round on behalf of this vital local charitable organisation. “When I started Pop Chorus with just 8 singers in 2012, I never imagined it would grow in this way. I’m passionate about how good singing is for people and can’t believe how lucky I am to run such an amazing choir, full of the loveliest people you could hope to meet. My mum lives in the town, so I’m very excited to be launching the Felixstowe daytime group in January with my colleague Jen. I hope people come along and give us a try - we can’t wait to tackle some catchy songs next term,” said Yula. The new choir will meet 10am-12pm on Thursday mornings in term time starting 12th January 2017 in the church hall at St John’s Church, Orwell Road, Felixstowe, IP11 7PW. The first session is free with no obligation to join, and a full term (January to Easter) costs only £75 (concessionary rate £50). For more information visit www.popchorus.org, email sing@popchorus.org or call Yula on 07788 585441.

BASIC Life Charity updates “A regular update from this brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support” Ah February – the month of romance! At BASIC we have lots of items with which you can charm that love of your life. Come into our shops in Hamilton Road or on Walton High Street and see if you can find a real bargain! During January we were pleased to assist many local people in extreme need with either items from our stock or with small financial donations. We’ve also been extremely busy with our online sales – we have around 350 items listed on Ebay at any time and around 1000 books on Amazon. If you’re a local person and you win any of our Ebay items they can be collected from our Walton store the day after purchase and, of course, you save the postage costs!

Quite a few local people have caught on to this idea and buy absolute bargains every week! Graham and Sarah do regular ‘live’ broadcasts on Facebook to show a selection of items which are listed – so if you use Facebook be sure to look us up at Basic Life Charity. Both of our shops started running tombolas before Christmas and they have proved to be so popular that we’ve carried on with them. The prizes come from our stock and we’ve made it that the chances of winning are really good with probably one ticket in three winning a prize. Our Felixstowe shop is saving up for another lightweight wheelchair for the use of local residents. Our Pop-Up shops at St. Edmund’s and St. Philips continue to flourish and it is lovely to see so many new faces. If you like the idea but are a little worried about coming – please come along. There are no questions or qualifications or anything like that – you simply join the queue, pay £1 for a bag and then help yourself! Simple! Have a great February – we look forward to seeing you!

Tomato and spinach egg muffins “Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best... food!” In each muffin case evenly divide the spinach leaves and chopped tomatoes. Grate the cheese and equally distribute amongst the muffins covering the lower ingredients with cheese. With no wheat or gluten in them, this easy recipe is perfect for a protein-packed breakfast or light lunch. You can add different fillings to these tasty omelette-like bakes - try mushrooms, tofu, ham or chopped bacon. We’ve gone for the veggie option of tomato and spinach. Ingredients (to make six muffins): 4 eggs 1 handful of chopped spinach - stalks removed 6 baby tomatoes, chopped 50g cheese (cheddar or parmesan) Salt and pepper for seasoning Method: Preheat the oven to 200C (180 fan)/Gas Mark 6 and place six greased muffin cases in a baking tray, or grease the muffin tray directly if you have no cases.

6

Whisk the eggs (if you’re going for low cholesterol, use only egg whites for this recipe) and pour the mixture over each muffin case until they are filled almost to the top. Make sure all of the ingredients are well covered with egg, and then season with salt and pepper. Place in the oven for 15-20 minutes until they have set and the cheese is bubbling nicely. Without burning your fingers remove them from their cases and serve immediately. These work best when eaten right away with a nice slice of seeded loaf or salad, but can also be prepared the night before for breakfast the following day or served alongside a main meal. John Durrell “Local painter and decorator” How long have you lived in Felixstowe and what is your favourite thing about the town? I have lived in Felixstowe for the last six months since moving from Ipswich where I have lived since I was born. My favourite things about Felixstowe are the community spirit and being so close to the sea. What is your current profession? I am a self-employed painter and decorator (interior and exterior). I started my apprenticeship when I was seventeen and have been working now for thirty-nine years! Tell us about your experience. I have done City and Guilds and advanced City and Guilds. I started as an apprentice for Cubitt and Gotts and once qualified went on to work with Ingram Smith of Woodbridge. Since becoming self employed, I have obtained a large and regular client base extending as far

as East Bergholt and Grundisburgh. I prefer to concentrate on decorating individual homes as opposed to commercial premises but have done a few shops in Woodbridge too. Any jobs you are particularly proud of? Whilst with Cubitt and Gotts and Ingram Smith, I worked at Ipswich Town Football Club (in Bobby Robson’s time) and also at Hintlesham and Seckford Hall, as well as the Royal Hospital Naval School in Holbrook. Diversely I have worked in churches and on the other end of the scale, in pubs! What makes you different from other painters and decorators? A difficult question! But my wide range of experience and the length of time in the profession makes me very qualified for any job. My customers always tell me how they’re grateful for the personal service I give them. How can readers get in touch with you? Readers can get in touch with me on: 01394 766357 or 07909558931 or else my email: johndurrell008@gmail.com.

Trim Your ‘Sales’ “Random ramblings by our local lad” At the time of writing this I had just graced the New Year sales with my presence and battered (that’s battered as in ‘hammered’ and not that of the crispy golden variety; that would be just plain daft) debit card. It wasn’t, however, my intention to go ‘sales shopping’; I headed out initially for an Earl Grey, slab of tiffin and a read of CrossStitch Monthly… er, I mean The Economist, but it just kind of happened. Why is it, pray tell, that although one neither craves nor indeed requires a sequinned readingspectacles holder in the shape of a Staffordshire bull terrier that you fight off elderly ladies in dayglow shell suits and woolly hats to grab the only one still in its box? I’ll tell you: it’s because it has 75% off!

8

Just because folk have missed making an entry on them for 5 or 6 days, they don’t want to know. I managed to pick up one for 2 quid of meerkats dressed as members of UKIP (that’s for the toilet) and another for the pantry for 72p. This one charts Cliff Richard’s tour of pencil factories from around the world; a different country and workshop for each month, although December just featured Cliff wearing a Scandi Knit turtle-neck whilst flambéing a Christmas log. Even the pound shops had a sale; up to half price. Yes dear reader, I swear that there is not an ounce of flannel in my last claim… actually saying that I managed to procure a 10 pack of tasteful Katie Hopkins flannels in the sale for 50p; get in there!!! Mind you, I have enough face cloths so I’ll have to find another use for those.

So what is it about a bargain that sends the senses soaring? I mean to say, you return home with your gaudy acquisition and it ends up replacing the missing foot on the spin-dryer instead of being employed for its intended use. And whilst we’re on the subject of reading glasses, why is it you can never feel them when you’re wearing them as an Alice-band whilst scouring the house for them?!

One of my more intriguing observations during ‘sale time’ was in the shoe shops. For some reason, these seem to attract the more frenzied variety of bargain hunting. Greeting me with an odour of leather and warm Camembert, my footwear boutique of choice had a floor awash with left foot sling-backs and brogues. When I finally found the size 6 ½ rack (yes I have small feet but it’s useful for avoiding paying VAT on footwear) all that was really left was a faded sandal and deck shoe which upon reaching inside for the price label was, I discovered still warm and slightly damp from the previous potential purchaser.

I’ll tell you what is a New Year bargain though. Calendars.

Anyway I’m off now to try out my new ultrasonic bellybutton-fluff remover.

Felixstowe town and around “Update from our local town councillor So here we are into 2017! I hope everyone who reads this article will have a year that brings you joy and peace and not too much of all the other stuff that makes up our lives! Last month I wrote about the draconian report that had come out regarding the future of beach hut management and the uproar that, quite rightly, was being voiced by the beach hut owners. 200 very concerned hut owners attended the December Cabinet meeting at SCDC where the report was to be debated. You will be pleased to read that there was an almost 100% turnout of Felixstowe District Councillors to support the hut owners as well as many others from other areas who have people within their wards that are hut owners across the district. We were all given the opportunity to speak and the outcome was that a recommendation was made to produce a consultation document that will be on the SCDC website encouraging responses from all SCDC residents and also Town and Parish Councils in the District. A paper copy of this document will be sent to all beach hut owners too. Members of the FBHCA met with Cabinet members and officers on the 16th December (this had been a scheduled meeting) to debate the proposals in the original report. The outcome from this and the public meeting resulted in (1) A decision on the way forward will not be taken by 1st April 2017 and any new system will not come

into effect until 1st April 2018. (2) The threat of removal of huts from sites if owners did not sign up to the proposed new system has been removed. (3) Licence fees will not go up by 10% this year but will rise in line with the proposed increase in Council Tax which is expected to be 3.25%. (4) Manor End licences will not be increased by more than other huts this year. All in all a sensible outcome and breathing space for all interested parties to respond to proposals as they arise in the coming months. Well done to all concerned. High on the agenda for this year is the proposed merger with Waveney DC. The results of the telephone survey carried out on this proposal (1000 calls) were discussed by cabinet members of both councils when they met in January with a report that came to all members for a full council meeting on 26th January. At this moment in time I am far from enthusiastic at this proposal as I fear that decision making will be remote (not sure where any new authority will meet) and representation will be diluted as the number of councillors will be reduced. Planning applications for new housing in Felixstowe will feature strongly in the coming year. Outline planning permissions exist on the field behind Walton Hall and Ferry Road and making sure that the impact of any new development on existing residential housing is kept to a minimum is proving challenging. Changes to the Ferry Road layout seen by Felixstowe Town Council members gave rise to concern with the request that this application comes back to the Council for further debate. A decision on this is awaited. Doreen Savage.

Theatre Company. Finally for the grown ups Rick McKay & Starkville bring their totally authentic Johnny Cash show to The Spa... on Saturday 25th February at 7.30pm. A complete look at the life and music of the Man in Black, Rick and his band perform all of the hits live and in the style intended for them. So much attention to detail has gone into this show that WS ‘Fluke’ Holland, Johnny’s drummer in The Tennessee Three and who has played with Starkville, said, “Rick McKay and Starkville are doing an excellent job of keeping Johnny’s music alive.” Looking ahead to Spring don’t miss the Legendary Bay City Rollers and Legends of Magic – in fact there’s far too much in the Spa’s new season schedule to fit into this month’s column. The American Dinner “Reviewing the greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town” As I am a naturally curious type I just had to try the American Diner which opened its doors in Felixstowe in December 2016. With my son as my dining companion we made our way into a little piece of vintage America. The first thing that struck me was the décor. With bright red padded chairs, some booth style seating and extra wide shiny black tables, this establishment could easily be in a scene in the movie ‘Grease.’ The wallpaper is fascinating, with images and symbols we associate with 1950’s America; Route 66 and Cadillacs for example. Another positive feature is that you can see the chefs prepare your food while you wait, as the kitchen is in front of you, not tucked away at the back of the building. But what about the quality of the food and dining experience I hear you ask? Well, quite simply there is a welcoming and friendly team of staff who are

attentive and upbeat. The service is prompt and the food really tasty. We decided to ‘build our own burgers’ and have 2 side dishes. My son, who likes to order food he hasn’t had before, was eager to try the red beans with pork as a side dish. He wasn’t disappointed. Our burgers came stacked in a brioche bun with cheese, tomato and rocket; just delicious, and our milkshakes were everything a good milkshake should be. It is delightful to see another new business in our town and having a ‘themed eatery’ is just great. With a choice from a breakfast menu as well as a main menu, I truly believe most people would be happy dining here. At a time when there is a newly elected U.S. president, it is perhaps fitting to try a new American dining experience in Felixstowe. Well worth a visit.

The uncrackable code

“Win local legend, Dean Gould, trophy and signed beermats”

Dean has recently devised the world’s longest uncrackable secret code sent by email. The code has 800 numbers to decode and 1200 jumbled letters. Why the fascination with secret codes? After Dean’s recent world record of memorising and writing Einstein’s equation on relativity, Dean put together his fascination of secret messages, like those used by spies during WWII, and the intricate decoding of them, like the use of the famous Enigma Typewriter.

The first 4 letters of your secret code are put in random. For example, “iyek.” Then the first digit of the random number is where the coded message starts. If the message for example is Meet Me On Sunday, the “M” is used for the number 5 but there is also another plus (+) number, or minus (-) number, for each digit in your series of numbers. (You can choose what these plus and minus numbers are. Just make sure you write them down.) For example if it is minus -4, you go back 4 places in the alphabet from the letter “M”. This would be the letter “I”, which begins the coded message. You continue in this method moving along the sequence of numbers as they relate to the coded message. The coded message can be written in groups of letters like below, to make it look like words and make it seem harder to crack. HRYAG TUJ UIOP BF EWSD JELY

To make this a record for the longest uncrackable secret code sent by email, it would have to be sent by email… and where else would be appropriate than to send it to Colditz Castle in Germany? Colditz Castle gained international fame as a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II for “incorrigible” Allied officers who had repeatedly escaped from other camps. The castle was well-known for the amount of coded messages being sent to and from the castle – to loved ones, to prisoner’s girlfriends etc.

This may all seem complicated but it is a very simple system to use.

The copyrighted code developed by Dean has been named the Carrington Code – another mystery for people to work out where he got the name from.

XPL VLNBT JLQJ SI VLMJ PB LSXKQ CA DEM LR

Dean said, “Imagine a code that can be used by millions of people whereby each person’s code can be different – with this unique code I’ve devised, no one else would be able to crack anyone else’s code as everyone has a different sequence of secret numbers.” So how do you encode a message?

When emailing the secret code, only the sender and receiver has that random sequence of numbers. This sequence of numbers is the key to decoding the secret message. Dean, a known local record-breaking legend, has set a challenge for you. He is giving away one of his trophies to any reader who can decode the secret message below using an abridged version of his Carrington Code. Here is the code: Use this number to crack the code. 3 2 4 3 2 4 3 4 5 2 +2 -3 +2 -4 -3 +5 -2 +3 -2 +4 The name of those who email in the correct answer will be put in a hat and the lucky winner drawn on January 12th. Those who were not lucky enough to win the trophy will still win one of Dean’s signed beermat’s which he used to win his Beermat Flipping World Record.

Each person has a random number, which can be endless. This number must be long enough to hold all the information in the secret code. This code is in the form of a series of random letters. These are written below a series of random numbers.

Send in your answers by February 15th to: info@thefelixstowemagazine.com

For example let’s take the series of numbers as follows: 5728649281736495836274364518462734572

You can see all his records on his website: www.recordholdersrepublic.co.uk.

Dean holds over thirty world records, mainly known for beermat flipping, coin snatching as well as many other dexterous feats across the world.
