BASIC Life Charity

Since registering as an independent Charitable Trust in 2000, BASIC has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. Christmas donations At BASIC it’s a busy time for us as we pack our Santa bags with lots of seasonal food and other items for local residents, who might be alone or vulnerable over the festive season. We started doing this about ten years ago and the number of referrals from social services and other groups has steadily grown. We expect this year to prepare at least 100 sacks and, together with the shoe boxes which were introduced this year, we should have enough to make lots of people feel loved and valued in our community.

We’d like to publicly thank Janet Forrest who came up with the idea of shoe boxes for local children and older people – great idea Janet!

Pop-Up Shops Our BASIC Community Pop-Up Shops are going really well and we’re pleased to confirm that our second local shop opened at St. Phillips Hall, Wadgate Road on 22nd November. Working in conjunction with the churches of St.Mary’s, Walton, Maidstone Road, Baptist Church and Seaton

Road, Methodists, it really is a community effort.

If you’d like to get involved or want to find out more about what’s involved please get in contact via the details below.

Overall the pop-up’s are gaining more interest and we plan to spread the idea into other area’s over the next few months. The Leytonstone one is proving to be very successful with over 150 people assisted within the first few weeks.

Celebrations We hope to be able to expand our services in the community over the next twelve months as we continue in our quest to help Felixstowe and the surrounding villages to become an ever better place to live. We wish you a happy and peaceful Christmas! The BASIC Team.

Mystery Shopper Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

Beach Bites Café

It’s no surprise that Beach Bites Café, a relatively new addition to Beach Station Road shops, has been awarded a gold standard by the Eat Out, Eat Well scheme, making them the only establishment in the town to receive this top award! Pictured right are the two that run the café, Matt Howe and Caroline Stafford (the yummy mummy we featured last April, who ran the London Marathon to raise money for Meningitis Now). This lovely pair has created a gorgeous atmosphere in their café and a cosy space to relax in. Beach Bites has fast become known as a friendly, affordable, healthy local café. Having lunched here a fair few times now, I’ve always found both the hot and cold menu to be generous, fresh and great for veggies too! My personal fave is the veggie sandwich sensation... homemade humous with crunchy peppers. Mmm!

And get this - Beach Bites was awarded its top rating for its commitment to providing healthy options as part of its daily menu with the goal to keep levels of fat, salt and sugar to a minimum and offer choices such as fresh fruit salad, dry fried breakfast, healthy snacks, smoothies and homemade soup during winter months. Pretty cool right?! So if you haven’t yet ventured down to Beach Station Road’s little corner of heaven, get yourself there, swing open the door to Beach Bites, get ready to be greated with

a hearty hello and indulge in some lovely grub!

Well done to Caroline and Matt - you’ve done a stellar job. I’ll be sure to pop in for another slice of that divine carrot cake! Beach Bites 12 Beach Station Road, Felixstowe, IP11 2DR 01394 278797

Christmas Dip for St Elizabeth Hospice

Are you brave enough to take a dip in the cold North Sea on Christmas morning for your local hospice? Join hundreds of other supporters as they take a dip in the icy waters of Felixstowe seafront on Christmas morning to raise vital funds for St Elizabeth Hospice. Catherine Sheppard, St Elizabeth Hospice’s events and challenges fundraiser, said: “The Christmas Day Dip is in its thirteenth year and it’s still such a popular event, with around four-hundred people lining the beach each Christmas morning ready to take the icy plunge!

“There’s always such a great atmosphere at the event, not only with the hundreds of people taking part, but with the thousands who turn out to watch. A lot of people do it in memory of their loved ones who were cared for by the hospice, and all the sponsorship money raised from the event goes towards improving life for local people living with a progressive illness.”

Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Cut-Outs Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best... food!

Soup-er Simple Squash and Sweet Potato Soup Colder months and long nights are destined for comfort food, so here’s a lovely and simple recipe that you can try at home to keep you cosy and warm.

Even the most reluctant cook will be able to master this one. We’ve used squash and sweet potato for ours but you can substitute this with pumpkin or a combination of all three! Ingredients: 1x butternut squash, peeled, de-seeded and chopped 500g sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped 1x large onion chopped 1 litre vegetable or chicken stock 1 tbsp olive oil to drizzle 1 tbsp honey 1 pinch cinnamon and nutmeg (or mixed spice) 100ml double cream Chives, thyme or coriander for a little garnish

2. Meanwhile, fry the onions in a little extra olive oil until they are soft but not browned and add the chicken stock and spices. Bring to the boil and allow it to simmer for five minutes.

3. When the vegetables are done add these to the mixture and blend with hand blender until smooth. Add the cream and bring back to simmer, adding salt and pepper to taste. Now it’s ready to serve with your favourite sour dough, oatcakes or gluten-free bread. Just add a little garnish or store in the freezer for up to seven weeks. Voila!

Making Tracks for a Drug-Free World

9

Last year, we featured an article on a local drug-awarness group. Here’s an update and news of a seriously cool new addition to their team! Image courtesy of alexjamesphoto.com.

Biker and drugs educator, Stewart Cambridge, has combined his two passions by having his motorbike decorated with the colours and insignia of “Foundation for a Drug-Free World”, an award-winning, international organisation devoted to drug education and awareness.

The motorbike made its debut on Tuesday 27th September when Stewart unveiled his kitted-out motorbike at his favourite racetrack, the world famous East Anglian racetrack at Snetterton near Thetford. He explained how Foundation for a Drug-Free World supply teaching aide materials free to educators: a campaign called The Truth About Drugs which gives the raw information on what drugs do - covering each key drug specifically - and contains frank interviews with ex-users. These are the same materials Stewart used together with yours truly, Mandeep Birdy, on their Marathon for a DrugFree UK tour, a multi-marathon travelling from Brighton to Edinburgh which we featured a couple of years ago. With drugs and alcohol use being at an all-time high and gateway drugs like marijuana being so commonly accepted, Stewart hopes to use his motorbike to reach youth and get the message out about drugs awareness.

“The bike is almost 20 years old. I figured she was due for some new fairing and rather than go for a re-spray I decided to upgrade her look to something much more special! I’m really pleased with the way she’s come out. She may be old, but she still kicks!” said Stewart. “The bike attracts attention. Travelling through London on the way up to Snetterton I’ve had a drugs counsellor tap me on the shoulder at Elephant & Castle to ask me all about the bike and what the Truth About Drugs campaign is, and I’ve had “death stares” from “tough guys” standing on street corners in Hackney. So hopefully when students see that

bike parked up in their school it will pique interest. Down-toearth knowledge about drugs is vital to raising awareness and responsibility among youth - it can be done in a way that captures imagination.”

The idea first came to Stewart during the marathon. “We were visiting so many schools up and down the country, I just wanted a cooler way to announce ourselves.”

Stewart’s concept behind both the marathon and the bike is to contrast drugs with sports and action. “I’m not saying everyone has to become a biker or take up sports, but people who are active or have a goal are more alive to that degree - whether it’s sports, artistic, academic or business. And drugs will destroy that. Ambition and drugs don’t mix.

“Unveiling the bike at Snetterton is a bit of a celebration to be honest and I’m proud and excited about the effect it can achieve.” For more information contact: info@drugfreeworld.org.uk - www.drugfreeworld.org

THE FELIXSTOWE TOWN CRIER UPDATES

From January 2017 issue, all Town Crier news will be found on our website: www.thefelixstowemagazine.com. How

Felixstowe Town and Around News November 2nd and I have just returned from a weekend in our twin town of Wesel along with other members of the civic party. Great weekend, lovely weather and generous hospitality as always and a chance to renew old friendships. Wesel is twinned with Salzwedel, Hagerstown USA, Felixstowe and Ketrzyn in Poland. All had sent representatives to Wesel for the Hansafest weekend which was a special one this year celebrating 775 years of the Hansa. Meeting people from other countries is very interesting even though language can be a slight problem at times. The Felixstowe Society is looking for 6 new committee members and a Treasurer! There are 620 members of the Society which has been in existence since 1978. The Society is very popular with large numbers of members attending their events. However, unless some willing people step up to the plate there is a possibility that after all this time the Society might fold. If you are interested in helping, please phone the Chairman Roger Baker on 282526. He really will welcome your call.

A planning application for a second Lidl store was approved by the Town Council recently. It is to be built on the site of the original ASDA application adjoining Maritime House behind McDonalds. It will be a larger store than the one at the Ordnance and the entrance will be off Walton Avenue with HGV vehicles using the road off the roundabout by Dock Gate 1. The existing store will be retained for the time being and I hope this will be for a long time as I know many people in the immediate area use the store. I am told that the Wetherspoons development will start sometime in the new year. The reason for the hold up was the discovery of a gas main across the site and whilst dealing with that the “building” slot scheduled for Felixstowe was lost. To put an end to rumours that seem to be abounding, Wetherspoons are still using the Hamilton Road site and are not, repeat not, buying the Conservative Club! The trial period of a year to allow cycling along the prom was launched in October. Hopefully, those who do so will cycle with consideration for pedestrians and the trial will prove to be a success.

I was invited to an award ceremony at SCDC to collect a Quality of Place award for the seafront gardens – in particular the shelter in the Town Hall gardens in my capacity as Chairman of the Friends of the Gardens. Many of us joined up with Felixstowe Rotarians in October to help plant 5000 purple crocus bulbs. This event was to highlight the work that Rotary is doing to help eradicate polio across the world and purple is the colour of the campaign. The planting was achieved very quickly with so many people all taking part.

Please mention

The proposals for Devolution drag on and we are told that it will now be the end of November when Councillors will be asked to consider a draft Devolution Order. Most people I have spoken to are open minded about devolution but sceptical about an elected Mayor – me included! Christmas is coming fast – so may I wish you all a Happy and Healthy one. Enjoy! Doreen Savage.

Orwell Decorative & Fine Arts Society The Society held its November meeting on 2nd November. Jo Walton gave an interesting talk with wonderful illustrations on the origins and uses of camouflage, how scientists, designers and artists pooled their talents to help the war effort. It enabled ships, airfields, factories and soldiers to be hidden from enemy eyes. Next month on 7th December we host Ian Keable with a lecture entitled ‘The Corked Conjurer: Comedy and Credulity in Georgian England’. Ian Keable is a lecturer and has been a professional magician. Our Christmas talk should be fun.

So why not come along and enjoy good company and an interesting talk? We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months. Lectures start at 2.15pm and last about an hour. Guests and non-members welcome, provided we have available space. A £6 donation is asked. For more info tel. Colneis Flower Club Sandra Price’s theme ‘Potty about Pots’ was as much about her containers (pots) as the flowers. Her flowers were, of course, beautiful, her foliage interesting and well conditioned, and her ‘pots’ were extremely varied in colour, shape and material. Sandra’s arrangements were traditional, using Anthuriums, Roses, Carnations and Gerbera. She stated she normally went to a wholesaler for flowers which meant buying in quantity. This also meant that although she used the same flowers throughout she used different combinations. Her foliage came mainly from various gardens and she thanked the members who had contributed some unusual and interesting pieces. The fact she did not necessarily know what she would receive meant her arrangements were always different. Sandra’s containers complimented her flowers either in texture or colour and ranged from a large purple jug to a huge, elongated, copper kettle which proved we should never say we do not have the right container! During her demonstration she gave us the names of most of the foliage being used and advised on how it should be

Felixstowe Waves were extremely proud to have Faye Hermon and Thomas Boyt selected to swim for Suffolk in the ASA National County Team Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield on 23rd October. Thomas swam in the 100m backstroke and gained a personal best time (“pb”), and also competed in the 50 backstroke leg of the team relay, again bettering his pb. Faye swam the freestyle leg of the relay, also in a pb time. We are thrilled that Suffolk will be in Division 1 again next year. On 29 October a team from the Club competed at the first round of the Winter League in Leiston. They managed a whopping 197 points, coming 2nd out of 5 teams. Across the whole event Felixstowe achieved 70% P.B.s, 10 wins and 0 disqualifications. We are always delighted to welcome new members. To find out more contact Mrs Sue Crowe (secretary) on 01394 448 604. The Committee

Local Theatre

Spa Ends 2016 with Family Fun-Packed Shows The Spa has a hugely busy December as we begin with Everlasting Light from 3rd-11th December. This is a show of festive music new and old, woven together with a fun retelling of the Christmas story. Each show features children from different local primary schools – with around two-hundred youngsters on stage every evening. Details of which school is performing are on the event details page of our website. Along with the children will be a live ten-piece band with soloists, dancers, videos and seasonal sketches for a great live musical experience. The concert is raising money for water and sanitation projects in south west Uganda through the charity Tearfund and The Everlasting Light CD & DVD featuring all of the children will be on sale at each concert.

Next is the Dennis Lowe Theatre Company’s Jack & the Beanstalk – oh yes it is! The Dennis Lowe Theatre Company return to The Spa from 15th December 2016 - 7th January 2017 with another family favourite. Follow Jack and his family as they try to make ends meet in this fabulous new production of one of our best loved fairy tales. Great pantomime humour is blended with some new twists and a highly talented cast to make this a show to remember. Friday 16th December is the Osmonds – SOLD OUT – however, families don’t miss on Wednesday 21st – Santa Saves Christmas. Join Fairy Flossy and Pompom the Penguin as they meet Father Christmas himself at his home in the North Pole and help Santa Save Christmas! Plus

every child will receive a present from Father Christmas in our special meet, greet and treat, after the most Christmassy Christmas show ever – HO-HO-HO! Two shows 11.00am and 1.30pm ideal for all the family.

Finally, a sneak peek at the New Year and Sat 14th January sees Marshall King’s The Only Way is Elvis back by popular demand after his hugely entertaining show in January 2016. For details of all shows in 2016 and up to April 2017 go to www.felixstowespa.co.uk or call the Box Office open Tue – Sun 11am – 4pm 01394 284962.

14 Local Lad Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

Automobile Autonomy Cars. Not only do they transport us humans around at impressive speeds and in unbelievable comfort these days (my friend’s car not only warms your posterior on colder mornings but has a handy clip on the dashboard to hold your copy of Toothpick Collector’s Gazette so as a passenger you can read hands-free) but I’ve noticed something else about them. In spite of these technology laden vehicles having every labour-saving device under the sun, do you find that they also have the ability to alter people’s personalities when driving alone?

I wondered for the rest of the day if the song continued to play in her head whilst innocently sorting through cruet sets and Velcro-fastened slippers in charity shops.

A meek little old lady pulled up beside me at a set of traffic lights the other day. She was driving a silver Ford Fusion wearing a home-knitted bobble hat and scarf and the obligatory driving gloves. I gathered from the fact we both laughed at the same time that we were listening to the same radio station. This was only confirmed when The Prodigy’s ‘Firestarter’ began playing and the head banging began. I thought for a horrible moment she was choking on the Fig Roll I’d spied her ramming in her mouth thirty seconds prior but no, every lyric was mouthed perfectly synchronised: “…filth infatuated, yeah I’m the pain you tasted, fell intoxicated.”

It doesn’t matter how elegant or classy your fellow driver happens to be. Without thinking that anyone might be watching, they slow down, clutch is depressed and they change down a gear. Brake applied harder they stop and into neutral they go. Hand brake is applied and without hesitation the bejewelled left hand is raised and, index finger extended, the quest to remove the irritating nose goblin commences. It’s only when, in horror they notice you’re watching them do they avoid diving in and instead pretend to scratch. You just know they’ll have another attempt once they pull away; I just hope they anti-bac before having a go at the pick-n-mix!

I’ll give you an example.

And have you clocked what also happens all too frequently at traffic lights?

Local Person

Local Person’s Charity Christmas Cards Local artist Ann Faiers has been working with local art groups in Felixstowe and the surrounds for over two decades - here she is to tell us more about herself and her fantastic charity Christmas Cards project. I have been a member of the Felixstowe Art group for over twenty years and am also a member of the Felixstowe Orwell Art group and the Martlesham Art Group.

When I was a child all I ever wanted for Christmas or birthdays was a drawing pad, coloured pencils and paints; this love for art continued all through school untill I left at the age of fifteen and gave it up to make my own clothes. During the eighties my life changed over night with a back injury so I turned to sketching and painting after years of knitting and making clothes for my two daughters. I became a member of the Ipswich Orwell Art group and became involved with exhibiting and selling my work.

The love of painting has helped me through many very difficult times in my life. It is an excellent release and thoroughly enjoyable to spend my time working on my passion. You can view my art each year at ‘Art on the Prom’ and I welcome commissioned work of local scenes. Most of my work I produce into cards and every autumn I paint a Christmas card. Over the years I have done quite a lot of work for different charities by making cards for them. Last year, The Card Centre at the top of Bent Hill had three of my designs printed with the profits going to our local

community hospital. Because these were so successful we’ve decided to do this again with another three local scenes. The cards will be sold in packets of six, with two of each design priced at £3.25 for a pack.

I have also made cards for the Fire Service Charity and the Retreat Quiet Waters at Bungay, as well as doing art workshops at the retreat - if you are wanting to rekindle your love for painting it’s well worth attending. It gives me a great pleasure to see people enjoy painting again when they haven’t painted a picture for years! If you would like to support a local charity and purchase a pack of Ann’s cards, pop into The Card Centre, 6 Hamilton Road, Felixstowe, IP11 7AU.
