Welcome to December’s edition of The Felixstowe Magazine

It is so close I can practically smell it! Christmas... and snow. Well, maybe that’s a bit of wishful thinking on my part, the snow that is, but I’d love for it to come soon.

The Town Crier have their updates on pages 10 - 11, along with the Mayor’s Christmas message and as always I feel we have some great stories to share with you throughout the mag. There are many brilliant people that come from all walks of life in Felixstowe and it’s always an honour to be able to shout about them. One of these people was Phil Hadwen. He was a great man and absolutely The Mr Felixstowe. We gave Phil a special mention because he gave a lot to Felixstowe and I hope we can all learn a little something from his dedicated nature (see page 3). This is the second Christmas we’ve had the pleasure of celebrating with you and I hope you find the read for your December issue as entertaining, interesting and inspiring as ever. I wish you everything you want for Christmas and mostly, I wish you success in all your endeavours and happiness in everything you do. A very merry Christmas to you all! Mandeep Birdy Editor

In commemoration of one of Felixstowe’s finest gems, the lovely Phil Hadwen...

In Memory of Phil

One of our Most Treasured and Loved

We were incredibly sad to have heard of the devastating news that Felixstowe’s much loved, respected and ever-popular Phil Hadwen passed away on the morning of Thursday 12th November 2015. Having only been introduced to Phil last year, we were lucky enough to have met him a good few times since, and had the pleasure of working with him at our hustings in April this year. He was an absolute joy to work with. It seemed that whenever Phil took on a role - be it professional, as a friend or as a much loved husband and father - he imbued it with everything he had - with devotion, great care, patience, responsibility and effortless grace. Always generous with how he could help others, Phil was a kind-hearted, true gentleman and always keen to entertain us in his various talks about the history of Felixstowe and when he hosted many quiz nights in Felixstowe.

We were honoured to have met such a person and so close to home. With all the worry and woes going on in the world, you tend to think that such people are too rare to meet, but they’re never too far away and we’re certain there are many, many more unique gems who set the bar for what it means to be a true Felixstownian, just as Phil did.

Though there are many things we can learn from Phil, one would be the example he set and the reminder that any one of us can be a creative and inspiring force in Felixstowe. Let’s allow the likes of Phil spearhead a way for us all to be more involved, more responsible for our community, more motivated to support the best of this town and to generate a passion for great things to come! On behalf of all of us at The Felixstowe Magazine and our wonderful readers, we’d like to extend our deepest sympathy to Phil's family, friends and colleagues. We wish you all our best in this time of loss, and hope you find comfort in the knowledge of how special Phil was, how positively he influenced so many, and the legecy he leaves behind in his wonderful books. All the best to you, Phil. You’ll be sorely missed and we thank you for everything you’ve done for our town!

Local Law More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor

Now that I’m settled in the commercial department I thought I would use this month’s update to report on some of the matters that I get the opportunity to deal with here at Jackamans. I certainly wasn’t aware of the full ins-and-outs of many of the commercial transactions that I am now involved in before joining the department, and I imagine some readers may wonder what I get up to on a daily basis.

Take commercial leases for example, which are often very different from those more user-friendly residential ones that many of you will have had dealings with. In a commercial context there is often a lot more to negotiate, and it all depends on the bargaining positions of the parties involved. Then there is the question of whether the lease is to be “fully repairing” – this means that the tenant will have to not only maintain the area, but potentially pay to fix an existing problem which was no fault of his own. Is the lease to be dependent on planning permission, or an associated business sale, or other conditions which may or may not happen? What happens if all doesn’t go to plan? I remember being horrified at the length of the

first commercial lease I saw, but now I can completely understand why it needed to cover all the aspects that it did. If the relationship between the parties were ever to break down, we could at least be certain that each would know where they stood.

Other matters I have dealt with involved option agreements (giving the option to buy at a later date), pre-emption agreements (giving the right of first refusal if the property is ever sold) and overage agreements (where additional amounts are payable if certain conditions are met). These are just a few examples on the commercial property side of things, not to mention more corporate matters! There’s never a dull moment, that’s for sure! Fiona Mann

Mystery Shopper

Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

The Triangle

I wish I could convince you that I had a full life that didn’t just relate to eating! My husband and I took a detour into town for lunch on our day off. This was my husband’s immediate and wise response to my threat of coming close to being ‘hangry’. You know that horrible feeling when you’ve waited too long to eat and any little thing makes you feel scratchy and irritated. We decided to go to The Triangle, which was one of our old haunts when we lived closer to town. If you recall, my husband is a carnivore with a particular fondness for bacon! He can fit in a breakfast at any time of the day and ordered a brunch – result! The sausages at The Triangle are really nice and meaty. I am particularly fascinated by their fried eggs. No matter how I try, I cannot reproduce the glossy, perfect white and yellow loveliness with runny yolks. And I have tried! I really like the bubble and squeak at The Triangle, which has the buttery mashed potatoes with green vegetables that are still green and tender. I continue to follow a healthy eating plan and although I could have made a breakfast work for me, I would have found it hard to resist the fried eggs. I opted for a jacket potato with chilli con carne. It was a really good choice, the chilli was obviously fresh and homemade. It has just the right amount of spice without having to arm yourself with a beer, and the salad was really fresh as well.

Remember, the visitors may have gone home after the summer sun, but Felixstowe’s shops and eateries are still there to be enjoyed! The Triangle 103-105 Hamilton Rd, Felixstowe IP11 7BL 01394 278723

Local Lad Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

Don’t get your Tinsel in a Twist! I love Christmas. No, I do. I know some of my chums would probably tell you otherwise, but it’s the lead-up to the festive season, which drives me completely loopy. It’s just so drawn out.

Don’t get me wrong, when I finally get going, hunting down an Ant and Dec novelty cruet set for instance, or that Simon Cowell pin-cushion I spotted in the dentist’s copy of Country Living for that special someone in my life, I really lapse into the festive spirit. It’s just I don’t want to do that before December kicks in.

I suppose it’s the fact I can buy a Jocelyn Wildenstein mask for Halloween, a ‘Morning after Madras’ firework for bonfire night and a tea cosy in the shape of Nigel Farage as a tasteful Christmas gift all on the same shopping trip. Can we do one at a time please?

And then there are the edgy challenges of Christmas gift buying, requiring precise forethought and honed instinct. Come on, I’m sure you’ve been there.

You dismissively purchase a reed diffuser which faithfully recreates the ambience of the All Black’s changing room for Hilda round the corner, only to receive an impressively sized and elegantly wrapped parcel from her before you

have time to stride round to her semi-detached bungalow with your gift. This is when panic sets in.

Should you open her present to you early? What if you don’t and it’s something exceedingly stylish? What will she think of you then? You can’t bear it! Without delay you dart into town (still in your trackies, Crocs and ‘Pull My Finger’ tee-shirt), pick up a sophisticated cafetiere with an insulating sleeve that resembles a Harris Tweed duffle coat and have it gift wrapped. Phew! You smugly hand it to her and wish her a very merry Christmas. Come the big day, palms sweaty with anticipation, you open Hilda’s present to find…..a three-dimensional William and Kate toilet brush holder in resin complete with dishwasher-proof drip-tray! How very thoughtful.

Have a very peaceful, healthy and loving Christmas everyone. @deanwales

Local Charity

7 Updates from one of Felixstowe’s most popular youth charities...

Level Two Youth Project Most of you will be familiar with the work of Level Two Youth Project. This is a local charity who offer services and facilities for young people aged 10 - 25. Our youth hub is based above Tesco in the town centre. We had a successful programme of half-term activities which included a trip to Strikes at Sudbury for bowling and Laser Quest and also a trip to the Hippodrome Circus for Halloween Spectacular. We have made strong links with Felixstowe International College. Their students enjoyed a social evening at our youth hub, and they also participated in our October halfterm activities.

Our young people are actively encouraged to take on local fundraising initiatives, and they will go bag-packing in Morrisons supermarket on Saturday 28th November from 10am-3pm. We have also organised a fundraising event at the Trimley Memorial Hall on Saturday 19th December – see poster for details. So far this year we have had a total 570 individual young people access our services, with a total number of contacts of 4200, this is a great achievement.

Level Two Youth Project welcomes visits by members of the local community, who would like to find out more about the

services we provide. Further information can be found on our website www.leveltwo.org or phone 01394-272521 to arrange a visit. Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Cut-Outs Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best...food!

Rocky Road Fudge

This rocky road fudge is really quick and easy to make. It can be made in the microwave or on the hob and is great fun for children to have a go in the kitchen. Everyone will think you have worked hours in the kitchen with a sugar thermometer. Ingredients;

350g chocolate (milk or white, expensive or budget version all work). 1 tin condensed milk. 30g tablespoons butter.

150g mixed nuts or biscuits or pecans.

100g mini marshmallows – or large ones chopped up. Bar of Turkish Delight, Mars bar or Snickers.

50g glace cherries or a handful of mixed sweets. Method;

On the Hob:

In a saucepan on low heat, melt your 350g of chocolate, condensed milk and butter together, stir to combine. You can also do this in the microwave: In a large microwave jug or bowl melt the ingredients together in 30 second bursts, stirring after each 30

second interval until the mixture is combined and there are no lumps of chocolate. Add nuts or biscuits or pecans and mini marshmallows. Chop up your chocolate bar or Turkish Delight (whichever you chose) into small pieces, add this to the mixture.

Take your glace cherries or sweets and stir into mixture. Be careful not to over stir. As a note, at Christmas you could use crushed candy canes and at Easter you could use mini eggs or even dolly mixtures.

Line a large tin or three loaf tins with baking parchment and spread fudge out. Add red and green Christmas Tree sprinkles and spray the fudge with an edible gold spray to get that extra Christmas bling. (You can find these in the baking aisle.) Leave to set, then cut into squares and enjoy! If you’re feeling generous enough to share, pack into Christmas bags or boxes to make a lovely gift.

You can try this delicious treat at Stennets Community Cafe in Trimley St Martin. 01394 671554

Doing something great for Christmas...

Be a Santa to a Senior

Ever since I spotted a warning on a box of fireworks which cautioned “Do not put in mouth” – phew, I’m so glad I spied that before I began chomping on that Catherine Wheel – I’ve always considered our behaviour on bonfire night to be giggle fuel. A couple of months ago, we featured this fantastic scheme set by the folks from local at-home care company, Home Instead Senior Care.

The purpose of the scheme is to reach out to elderly people in our community who, perhaps, don’t receive many visitors and who would really appreciate knowing that local people are thinking about them this Christmas. The team began this brilliant gift-giving where they joined forces with many organisations in Felixstowe including Queen’s Road Day Centre, The Salvation Army, HOPE Trust, The Hand in Hand Club and Parkinson’s Society and Age UK Suffolk, in order to find local older people who otherwise might not receive a gift at Christmas.

Last year, the ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ scheme received 280 presents to give to local elderly people! Similar to last year, there will be a Christmas tree in the Marks & Spencer shop on Hamilton Road, decorated with gift tags each representing an elderly person living in the local community, who may not receive a gift this Christmas.

THE FELIXSTOWE TOWN CRIER UPDATES Felixstowe Town and Around News It’s a very dark, wet Wednesday in November as I start to write this article. Really miserable! Hope the following words might be cheering if the weather is still the same when you read these words!

As you will all probably know, the Felixstowe Area Action plan is now out for public consultation and everyone is invited to comment on the proposals within the plan. Felixstowe Town Council’s planning committee have spent hours perusing this document and making changes that it considers necessary for the future of the town. I think the document is a good one as it covers many aspects – not just housing and suggested housing sites. Tourism, employment, the environment and coastal change management and flooding are included. Housing will, of course, be the subject upon which the public will comment the most – and I have read on social media some of the comments being made already. There is a housing need in Felixstowe but of the right type. We need smaller units for young people and families as well as bungalows and smaller units for older residents. So many of the young people who work in the town live in other areas and commute into work here. How much better to provide housing here for them that is affordable and apposite, giving the town the opportunity to flourish further and maintain a good economy.

A party of seven representatives (of which I was one) enjoyed a fabulous weekend in Wesel at the end of October. As always, we were warmly welcomed by our German hosts and took part in the Hansafest celebrations and parade. At a civic reception which celebrated 25 years of twinning between Wesel and Salzwedel (our other partner Town) I presented a photograph showing the newly refurbished Spa Gardens which was warmly received. A sobering part of the visit was to a refugee centre where 250 families and 650 young men were being accommodated. We were shown a reception centre where 130 new arrivals were expected for registration and health checks before onward movement to other parts of Germany. All local authorities have to accept 850 immigrants and at the moment are picking up 70% of the cost. This is under review by the German Central Government. As I said, a sobering experience. Christmas is hurtling towards us all and there are some fabulous things coming up to help the town celebrate in style. The Christmas lights (thanks to the Lions) an Ice Rink (funded by District Councillors, The Town Council and the Co-op), a new event at Landguard Fort which will include a Carol Service and much more. VisitFelixstowe website has all the details. Space precludes me from writing more but suffice it to say, it has been a very busy month with an even busier one to come. My sincere wishes for the happiness and enjoyment of you and your families at Christmas and into the New Year. Doreen Savage

Colneis Flower Club

We were very lucky to have Adele Kent as a last minute replacement for our advertised demonstrator. Adele’s theme was ‘I’ve got a little list’ and as she created her arrangements she described how she made lists for everything from shopping to ‘places to visit’. Her first arrangement used a posy pad, covered in moss, set in a beautiful bowl. Using unusual grasses, ferns and ivy from her garden and pale pink gerbera (conditioned in water containing a little bleach) she created her version of a meadow which reminded her of the East Ruston Gardens. Adele continued with a modern arrangement which included a ‘trellis’, lovely foliage from her garden, complimented with green chrysanthemums and red roses. This was followed by memories of the Bishop’s garden in Norwich, her interpretation of a classical garden and a stunning Hogarth Curve. The finale was a tropical garden. Throughout, Adele gave us tips, interesting ideas for mechanics and funny stories which caused lots of laughter. We don’t have a meeting in December so on behalf of Colneis Flower Club Committee I would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and hope you will join us in 2016 for some happy, interesting and colourful demonstrations. We have some excellent demonstrators who will be able to give you lots of ideas for your own flower arranging and I look forward to welcoming you. For more information about our club, please call 01394 282 468.

Felixstowe Recorded Music Society With Christmas rapidly approaching, our final meeting of 2015 will take the form of a selection of music on the theme of the festive season chosen by our committee members.

11 In the past their choice has ranged from Enya and Pink Martini to Tchaikovsky and Bach – something for every mood and taste. If you would like to make an early start at getting into the Christmas spirit, do come along and join us on Wednesday December 2nd at 7.30pm in the United Reformed Church Hall, Tomline Road, Felixstowe. Our first meeting in the New Year will be on the 20th January when Rosalie Thomas will present “Musical Beginnings” and we look forward to seeing you again then. Visitors pay £2.50 including tea/coffee and biscuits. Further information from Mike Fowle on 01394 275098 or mike@thorndyke.fsbusiness.co.uk. Alternatively, do call into Stillwater Books in Hamilton Road and pick up a copy of our latest Newsletter and Programme.

Lioness Club of Felixstowe Our meeting at the beginning of November was an exciting one! After enjoying our usual meal, we were delighted to welcome Hannah and Cyril from EACH; Past-President Jill presented them with a substantial cheque, the proceeds from the recent Quiz Night. Hannah then told us a little bit about the charity and how the money might be used. We were also pleased to welcome to this meeting Angela Howard, MD105 Lioness Chairman, and Sandy and Kay, two prospective members. Our next fundraising efforts will be on Light-Up day on November 28th, when we will be running a chocolate tombola and also a cake stall.

Unfortunately the Clairvoyant Evening last month had to be cancelled due to illness, but we are hoping to reschedule this for some time next spring.

We have been very busy making Lioness-themed decorations and are pleased to be taking part in the annual Christmas Tree Festival at the Salvation Army Citadel. Like most groups, we have a very busy time over the next few weeks, with several social events planned. We would like to wish all residents of Felixstowe a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. For details of any events and information about Lionesses, please email Val: vijinks880@hotmail.com.

Felixstowe Swimming Club

Felixstowe Swimming Club has appointed a new Head Coach to manage and develop its swimming program. Mr David Treliving took up the post following his recent move to the area upon his appointment to the position of Pastoral Support Manager at Felixstowe Academy. David previously coached at Stanway Swimming Club near Colchester and has progressed swimmers through to regional and national level.

David’s initial focus is to develop and improve the training the Club offers and to ensure continuity in the delivery. The Club regularly gets individual swimmers competing at County and Regional levels as well as its team competing in the regional leagues and it is his intention to build upon this record. November’s meeting heard Dr Susan Owens recounting how Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother did much to promote contemporary British art by buying and commissioning during her reign, especially during WW2. A lovely talk, well received by all.

We welcome new members. The lectures last about an hour, are wonderfully illustrated and are presented by national and international lecturers. Guests and nonmembers welcome, provided we have available space. A £5 donation is asked. For more info tel. Jean Bradberry on 01473-710921 or email odfasmemsec@btinternet. com. BASIC Life Charity

From the initial idea in 1997, through our acceptance as a registered Charitable Trust in 2000, Felixstowe-based BASIC, an independent Charitable Trust, has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. It’s December!

While it seems most of the children in the town are promising to ‘be good’ (at least until the 25th), their parents are rushing around trying not to forget anything before the big day! As usual we know the town will be busy and have that lovely seasonal atmosphere that only Christmas can bring. While there will be lots to celebrate, we also know that for some people, Christmas can be a difficult time. At BASIC we’ll be hoping to spread some extra cheer with our sacks of goodies for those alone or vulnerable, as mentioned in the last edition.

We’re also going to be having a raffle at each of our shops with some fantastic prizes. Tickets are on sale now and the draw will take place on 15th December.

Looking back over November - we had a great quiz night on Halloween at Felixstowe Labour Club. Proceeds were split between BASIC and the Brew for Blake appeal which supports the children of David and Lucy Ainsley. An amazing £503 was raised! Lucy has been a star for charity – even resorting to throwing herself out of a plane as seen in the last edition of The Felixstowe Mag! We also had the great news during November that BASIC have been selected as one of the three charities to whom tokens can be given at the local Co-Ops!

We hope you will support us by dropping your green token into our box. As you will know all profits from BASIC are used exclusively in Felixstowe and the surrounding area and we’d like to use any funds raised from the community scheme to assist with shelving for storage of our food bank items.

All that is left is to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all of our volunteers who work so hard each year, also to the amazing people who have held fundraising events for us throughout the year and of course, to the customers who donate and those who purchase. Together, as a community, we’re making a really significant, positive difference to the lives of many of our neighbours. Now surely that is a big part of what Christmas is really all about! Local Shopping

Yippee! The stunning art, craft and boutique shops on Orwell Road have a late night shopping day - See you there!

Christmas Late Night Shopping on Orwell Road Thursday 10th December until 9pm

Felixstowe may not be top of most people’s list for Christmas shopping, however a new ‘Bohemian/Artistic Quarter’ is flourishing in Orwell Road and fast becoming a favourite shopping destination for locals.

Several small independents have recently opened up between Hamilton Road and the convenient Ranelagh Road car park, breathing new life into the area and creating a buzz for the discerning shopper looking for something different in the town centre. With Christmas around the corner, these new independents have got together to organise a festive late shopping evening on Thursday 10th December (until 9pm). Why not join them for a glass of fizz, or mulled wine, and see what they have to offer? Some street entertainment is also planned, so if you are looking for welcoming, stress-free shopping this Xmas, where you will find unique products, this small corner of Felixstowe is the place to go! Suffolk Living After starting off as ‘Hideaway Hut’, Karen Law has moved across Orwell Road next to the Gas Shop to create “Suffolk Living”, where she stocks Xmas stocking-fillers, cards, plants, some ladies’ fashion items, home accessories, local craft-work and a vintage section.
