Dean’s a Go Go for a New Einstein Record

At Brackenbury Sports Centre Dean took up an amazing challenge to write from memory the Einstein Equation on Relativity (Behaviour of Space and Time) plus added workings in the fastest time. The equation consists of almost a thousand symbols numbers and letters, and even though Dean once forgot his four digit bank pin number, he still managed to write this seemingly impossible equation from memory! In front of Record Holders Republic adjudicators, Ann and Tony Lazell, Dean smashed the record in just sixty-five minutes.

This feat has never been attempted before. Dean’s other similar feat in past was to recite Pi to 1,000 decimal places which he did in 1998, in 8.14 minutes, which still stands as a world record. He also managed to write Pi to 3,000 decimal places in 1999, which earned him 11th place in the world and 6th in the UK in the Pi World Ranking List Organisation. Dean also devised The Shortest Game of Draughts in 1985, but in the 1990’s was beaten by somebody who used a computer to do one move less. Talking about this massive achievement, Dean say, “This might be my last world record, as the golden age of record breaking ended a few years ago and is not now part of today’s culture in the UK. There are now over twenty online World Record Organisations around the world. This makes record breaking so much more possible for people. Even so, my

latest record took a lot of practice beforehand and I am very proud of the achievment.” Dean owns the Record Holder’s Republic website (www.recordholdersrepublic.co.uk). He and his team are now working on another world record organisation designed to keep records standard.Their idea is to go back in time and keep both old and new records standardly recorded, as this has lapsed in recent years.

From us all at The Felixstowe Magazine, huge congrats to Dean for his stellar accomplishment!

Help Save the Royal British Legion Club In Felixstowe from Closure Not long ago the members of the Royal British Legion Club in Felixstowe were given the devestating news that their club would soon need to be closed if membership doesn’t pick up. Since then, they’ve been doing an amazing job at turning this disaster on its heels with campaigns to raise awareness of the club, explaining what the Royal British Legion do and holding some brilliant family, fun-packed events to get those funds going! So far, the local club have raised an astonishing £3100 (at the time of this writing, that was in just one week!).

The club has had a huge amount of support, but ultimately their fundraising events have been about raising awareness of the club, and trying to increase membership to avoid the very possible closure. On Saturday 27th August, (on the Bank Holiday) the club will have a huge Open Day. Not only will there be live music, stalls, BBQ and more, but you can also go and see what it’s like and become a member on the day. Incredibly, it’s only £17 (plus £5 to the local club) to join for the year, which gives you access to any club in the UK. There are many perks from joining, which include: • • • •

Reduced beer prices, just £3 a pint Reduced function room hire Live music most weekends, events and fun days We’re always family friendly!

Karlene, who works at the clubhouse says, “All we need to do is raise awareness for our plight to save the club from closure, which none of us, especially the veterans and ex-military that use it, want to see.

We are currently in the process of fund-raising thanks to Clare, who came on board right from the start, as her hubby is ex-army and served in the First Gulf War. We want to do the club up, improve the facilities and make it an even better place to come. Everyone is welcome, and we need all the help we can get. So please get involved, join in with our our events, come have a drink and enjoy the live music we put on every weekend, and help us to help save the club for everyone. Thank you.”

Aquabridge Law Moves Felixstowe When Sharon Pearson joined the firm in 2014, Aquabridge Law started to help Felixstowe move house. Since then, Sharon has led the conveyancing work for over 800 house moves, 844 to be exact! This success has led to the growth of the Conveyancing team; we now have three experienced conveyancing staff working with our clients, in addition to Sharon. In recognition of her contribution to the firm, Sharon (below) has recently been promoted to Associate at Aquabridge Law. Keith Vincent, Managing Partner, comments “We always wanted Aquabridge to be part of the community of Felixstowe and so we are delighted to help so many residents to buy and sell their homes. I am pleased to announce Sharon’s promotion; it is well deserved and recognises her

commitment to providing our clients with a high level of service.” Aquabridge has seen a 70% increase in conveyancing cases in the last year, with over 200 clients already making use of our services in the first half of 2016. Sharon’s wealth of experience in the local market and her legal qualifications are why our clients trust her to guide them through their move. As well as sales and purchases, Sharon can help with the more complex issues of residential property. Leasehold extensions are currently in high demand; mortgage companies will not lend on properties with leases with less than 70 years left. Aquabridge is currently acting for a number of property owners to extend their leases, which is essential to obtaining a mortgage offer.

Protecting Your Investments Buying property is often the investment of a lifetime so you should ensure that investment is protected for the future, and for your family. Sue Carlile has recently joined Aquabridge, bringing over 20 years’ experience advising individuals and families on wills, probate, trusts and estate planning. Sue has worked with generations of families, giving them peace of mind that their affairs are in order and that their wishes are clearly set out to protect their loved ones. She can also advise on inheritance tax, paying for care should you need it, and retaining control of your finances in later life. Sharon is a licensed conveyancer and a safe pair of hands to advise on your house move, or other property matters such as lease extensions, re-mortgages or title issues.

Sue is a solicitor and member of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners and draws on her experience to advise on wills, trusts, tax and probate.

‘The Big Conversation’ About All The Little Things Last year, an incredible 73% of British adults admitted they had not talked to someone about their funeral wishes. Martin Foster, a Funeral Director for The East of England Co-op Funeral Services, wants this to change and is encouraging people to have The Big Conversation about all the little things that make a funeral special.

Having spent 17 years working at Felixstowe docks before realising his vocation in life, Martin has followed in the footsteps of his father who was a Funeral Conductor for a number of years. Martin was appointed at the East of England Co-op Funeral branch on Walton High Street in Felixstowe back in 2014 and feels honoured to be supporting his hometown by providing a service he feels passionate about.

Working closely with local families, Martin ensures the service is arranged to reflect people’s passions, interests and hobbies in a more personalised ceremony. Recently, Martin and his colleagues across the region have seen a rise in more unique tributes, including up-beat songs, the releasing of doves or bespoke veneered coffins featuring a montage of treasured photographs.

Martin explains: “I like to encourage families to think of funerals as celebrations of life that are as unique and individual as the person they are dedicated to. This is often

reflected by music, poems, readings and unique requests such as asking guests to wear bright, bold colours. “Talking about the little things can make the conversation less scary and can put minds at rest that all aspects of the funeral, from the travel to the service, to a final resting place, will be exactly what that person wanted.

“Families sometimes say they wish they had discussed things in advance as it can be distressing for people when they are unsure of their loved one’s final wishes. I want people to know that we are here to help provide support and guidance to people so they can have these kinds of conversations ahead of time.

“Having lived in Felixstowe all of my life, it is a privilege to be able to support members of my local community and help families to fulfil unique funeral wishes for their loved ones.”

THE FELIXSTOWE TOWN CRIER UPDATES Felixstowe Town and Around News

Lioness Club of Felixstowe

Suffolk Coastal Councillors voted to send the Devolution process on to the next stage at a full Council meeting in July. I am not sure that I am fully behind this initiative, but listened to the debate and to the questions being asked and felt I could support moving to the next stage knowing that it comes back to Council in October. There will be a public consultation in the intervening period by MORI via phone calls. The main sticking point for many of my colleagues including myself is the Elected Mayor role which gives that individual a great deal of power. SCDC and the County council put in an additional resolution in the decision, questioning the need for this role. As it is it seems that another layer of administration will be needed if Devolution does go ahead. However, who knows what might happen when a new Prime Minister is finally selected with the whole idea of devolvement?

The month of June began well with our 26th Certification Anniversary Lunch. This was held at the Holiday Inn IpswichOrwell and was attended by over fifty members and guests. After a pleasant lunch entertainment was provided by several members of Felixstowe Lioness Club reading humorous poems; this included President Val, who read the famous poem by Jenny Joseph, ‘Warning’, complete with purple scarf and red hat.The following Saturday several members joined the Felixstowe Lions for a garden party to celebrate the Queen’s ninetieth birthday. Tea, sandwiches, sausage rolls and cake went down well, along with a glass of champagne to toast Her Majesty. We all enjoyed this lovely social occasion and the rain held off too! On July 2nd we supported the Friends of Felixstowe Hospital by serving refreshments at their annual Summer Bazaar and we are looking forward to our next fundraising events after the summer break.

The new events area developing on the old yacht pond site is looking very good. I understand interest is already being shown in holding events on it when it is completed – hopefully in August I am told.

The Town Council’s Youth Forum was invited to hold its last meeting of the present year at the Spa Pavilion. Felixstowe Forward had requested the young people of the forum to put forward ideas of what they would like to see in the Town and amongst some great ideas was a list of things they would like to see happen at the Spa. These were forwarded to the owners of the theatre who have taken some of these ideas forward, but also invited the members of the forum to have their meeting in the theatre. Everyone really enjoyed being there and also going up on stage to present their reports. The crisps and drinks given to them all were much appreciated too! All for now. Doreen Savage.

Felixstowe Recorded Music Society The society was founded over sixty years ago as the Felixstowe and District Gramophone Society. Now another change of title – Music to Enjoy. Originally formed to enable people to pool resources when recordings and equipment were scarce and expensive, we still have the same purpose today - namely, sharing the enjoyment of music.

Come along to our meetings where an enthusiastic advocate of some particular composer or performer will – we hope – persuade you to explore something unfamiliar. Our next season begins on the 7th September 2016 at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church Hall in Tomline Road, Felixstowe. Meetings held on the first Wednesday of the month thereafter. A friendly welcome assured.

Orwell Decorative & Fine Arts Society The Society is now on summer holiday. Next season's programme begins on Sept 7 with Tony Faber telling us about the history of his family publishing firm Faber & Faber through its cover designs and illustrations. Season 2016-17 looks really good with lectures on Camouflage and British Artists, Fine Cell Work in British Prisons, Georgian Conjurers, David Hockney, Antony Penrose will talk to us about his mother, photographer Lee Miller, and her dealings with Picasso and others. The season continues with a talk on Street Art, on Sacred Silver, and ends with a spy story set in London.

We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months. Lectures last about an hour, are wonderfully illustrated and are presented by national and international lecturers. Guests and non-members welcome, provided we have available space. A £5 donation is asked. For info call Jean Bradberry on 01473 710921 or email odfasmemsec@btinternet.com. Visit our website at http://www.orwelldfas.org.uk/ for latest events and news. Colneis Flower Club Wendy Munnion from Maldon gave us a wonderful, colourful demonstration as well as a fascinating history lesson and a reminder of the great days we celebrate in England. The Chelsea Flower Show, started in 1862, began life as the ‘Great Spring Show’ in Kensington and Wendy created a garden design in mauves and oranges. Next, Ascot depicted as a fascinator in a hat box using purple, pink and cream. We learnt that in 1171 Queen Anne went for a carriage ride in East Cote, felt it was an ideal spot for racing, bought the land for £588 and developed the course. George IV organised a carriage ride around the course to let people see him and now it takes place every year. Wimbledon brought an innovative arrangement using two placements to represent the players; medolina sticks showed the speed of the balls; the balls were Kermit Chrysanthemums and the rackets were green Anthuriums. The English Lawn Tennis Association was founded in 1877 and the first championship was a Gentlemen’s Singles. 200 spectators paid 5 old pence to get in. The ladies were allowed to play in 1884. The Queen’s Palace Garden Party was represented by an extravaganza of bright pink alstroemeria, roses and pale pink spray of carnations. Queen Victoria began the event in 1860 and Queen Elizabeth increased the number of parties to four to ensure those serving the country could be recognised. A froth of eucalyptus, single white chrysanthemums, blue iris, eryngium and gypsophila represented Cowes Week. The finale was the Last Night at the proms using red, white and blue flowers of course! The whole evening was very interesting and the audience was spellbound by the ease with which Wendy created her arrangements. If you would like an unusual evening of entertainment, come along to our meeting on 15 September when Jo Poulter from Peterborough will be demonstrating with the theme ‘Picture This’. The Practice Piece is ‘Still Life’. We meet in the Old Felixstowe Community Centre, Ferry Road, Felixstowe IP11 9NB at 7.30pm. Members free, visitors £4. For more information call 01394 282 468.

The final ten days of rehearsals for Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime were almost more tense and dramatic than any play. One of our principal actors unfortunately lost his mother and had to withdraw at very short notice. We were very fortunate that Alan Dix, who was doing the set, lights and sound, had done the part before and agreed to step into the breach. This left me, as director, faced with the prospect of operating the technology, while prompting at the same time from the back of the hall! I was petrified, but Ruth Miller heroically stepped into the tech role and disaster was averted. We had wonderful audiences who certainly appeared to be enjoying themselves. They seem to appreciate the intimate atmosphere at Fados House, and we are celebrating a happy outcome.

We have recently been joined by several new members, one of whom will make his directorial debut with us for our next production. He has a lot of experience to bring to us and l am keeping my fingers crossed there may be a part for me next time. We haven’t decided on the play yet, or an exact date, as committee members are taking a break away but it will be our winter production, and when you get the details please book early as the demand last time was quite unprecedented. Thank you all for your support.

Inner Wheel Club of Felixstowe

At our June meeting President Pauline introduced Mr Bryan Boreham who gave us interesting information about FACTS, the Felixstowe Community Transport Charity. About 13001500 passengers are able to use and escorts. He was thanked by Yvonne Yule and also given a cheque. The clubs A.G.M. was held at the end of June but started with the sad news that Eileen Sherlock had died the previous day. Although Eileen had moved away to be near her family she still kept up her Inner Wheel membership and enjoyed receiving all our news sent to her. She was twice President and was a constant friend and member of the Club. We remembered her with affection during a few quiet moments.

Reports were given recounting various events during the year, in which we have also supported a number of charities, especially the Eve Appeal, a women’s cancer charity. A short business meeting followed during which President Pauline Hume handed over the chain of office to Jennie Roome who has planned an interesting and varied programme for 20162017. Anne Poole continues as treasurer and Wendy Tolliday after three busy years as secretary handed over to Jean Leitch.

Local Group

The Felixstowe Art Group It all began in 1951 with a group of people attending R.A. Campbell’s evening class, who, when local government funding was cut, decided they would like Bob Campbell to continue running outdoor classes. The Art Group was founded on Monday 28th April 1952 when a public meeting was held at 220 High Road West. The ground floor of the house was Makinsons Framing and Art Shop and Mr and Mrs Makinson were among the founder members of the group.

Initially the group was called the Deben Art Group. The first Chairperson was a lady interested in art but did not paint, O. D. MacDonald was Vice Chair and Howard Burnett, Secretary. MacDonald knew the famous cartoonist, Carl Giles, very well and persuaded him to become Vice President and who held that position until his death in August 1995, aged 78. Some of his cartoon originals appeared at many of the group’s Annual Exhibitions.

Miss Joyce Havell, a descendent of the Havells who printed Audebons Birds of South America, was the first President of the group. Following Miss Havell’s move from Felixstowe Bob Campbell was elected President in 1956. In September 1952 the group’s first exhibition was held, and in Bob Campbell’s words, was “a very ad-hoc affair!” The Annual Exhibition expanded and members of the Rangers Art Club, now called the Orwell Art Group of Ipswich, were invited to exhibit as guests, a connection which lasted for some years.

In 1957 the exhibition contained a section devoted to nine oils plus drawings by two students from Bradford Art School, as one had won a scholarship (they never said who). These two scruffy lads, with little money, turned out later to be internationally known artists; John Loker, who settled in the Norfolk/Suffolk border exhibiting nationally and more notably, David Hockney.

Years later, some people who had bought Hockney’s works for £2 – £5 or so realised £1200!

please mention The Felixstowe

For many years two stalwart members of the group were Elsie and Decima Hobbs, who were known as the Bloomsbury painters.

Later, John Constable, great great grandson of the famous Suffolk-born painter, was elected President in 1974.

In 2001 the group was proud to celebrate its 50th Anniversary by a dinner at what is now the Elizabeth Hotel.

The aim of the Felixstowe Art Group continues to encourage art in the community, accepting as members complete beginners as well as experienced artists. To this end, as well as the Gallery and Annual Exhibition, the provide group members with the option to showcase their work. The group provides twice monthly talks, demonstrations, workshops etc. and space so members can work on their own projects with advice on painting if requested. A window exhibition at the bottom of Bent Hill exhibits and sells member’s artwork. 13 More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor Occasionally I get to represent Jackamans outside of the office and it does make a nice change! I recently helped man our stand at the Anglia Business Exhibition at Trinity Park, where our Wimbledon-theme was very well received. Many people entered our Spot the Ball contest for the chance to win three months’ membership of Felixstowe Lawn Tennis Club which involved placing a Jackamans’ pink tennis ball sticker where they thought the ball would be. We served a refreshing glass of Pimms to people visiting the stand and perhaps that’s why it was so busy!

Jackamans also regularly sponsors events in Suffolk and Norfolk. At the end of June each year Felixstowe Book Festival takes place, and this time we sponsored the Laura Thompson event on the Sunday afternoon. Laura spoke about her two most recent biographies, one on the Mitford sisters and the other on Agatha Christie. Laura’s talk was absolutely fascinating - particularly when she described her meetings with two of the Mitford sisters. Laura was very ably interviewed by thriller writer Nicola Upson. A Friends of the Festival scheme has been launched and if you would like to join, do contact Meg Reid, the Festival Director. Also, if you attended any of the events at this

year’s Book Festival and didn’t complete a feedback form at the time, Meg and the organising committee would very much welcome your feedback. Please email meg@ megreid.co.uk or fill in the contact form on the www. felixstowebookfestival.co.uk website. Thank you.

The next major event in the calendar will be Art on the Prom. Jackamans co-sponsors this each year and the artistic among our partners and staff really enjoy producing artworks for it. Do visit our stand. Laura Thompson attended stage school and at the age of sixteen won a competition to read English at Oxford. In 2003 she wrote “Life in a cold climate,” a biography of Nancy Mitford, which was reissued in early 2015. This was followed by “Agatha Christie: An English mystery”, the first major biography of Christie for more than twenty years. Then her most recent book about all six of the Mitford sisters, “Take six girls”.

DIGITAL ACCOUNTANTS! Cloud accounting software is similar to traditional desktop personal computer software, and has huge benefits for our clients: • More flexible and accessible • Provide financial reports in real-time • Reduce capital expenditure costs on servers and licences, as business grows • Reduces backup and update costs (usually built into the subscription)

With a bounty of technology at our fingertips there is an opportunity for businesses to be able to assess, design and implement solutions for their organisation.

The software industry’s marketing techniques are effective because there’s a tremendous thirst for technology amongst business owners, but also an abiding confusion over how to implement them effectively.

Please mention

As AccountingWEB’s editor, John Stokdyk, pointed out in an article, accountants’ “professional training taught accountants not to approach complex situations without a full understanding of the situation and a command of the skills needed to address them.” We can assist in understanding how to curate it and consult with small and medium size businesses on how www.accountwryteltd.co.uk Tel: 01394 672562 to use cloud accounting software most effectively. Mystery Shopper

Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

Kitchens Continental Ltd Giving another dimension to professionalism! Sounds a bit over the top right? Well, not in this case. I know I can get a little prone to over-excitement about amazing local businesses, but I feel Kitchens Continental surpass all viewpoints of what true professionalism is. Owned and run by the brilliant and very much hands-on Gavin Flatman, Kitchens Continental go above and beyond what the customer needs and wants, and provide an outstanding customer experience again and again. So when they say, “customer satisfaction means everything to us” - they really mean it! Kitchens Continental have been going since 2007 and supply only the best in kitchen furniture, from Sheraton to Omega and incorporate appliances by top brands like Neff. Even personal touches like a unique glass backsplash can be made so your kitchen is just as individual as you are. As part of the amazing team behind Kitchens Continental, there are only the best when it comes to kitchen fitters and granite specialists for your worktops - there’s no cutting corners on quality. Infact, I believe that attention to detail is the hallmark of Kitchens Contentinal. I cannot compliment Gavin and his staff highly enough.

They are without a doubt, one of the most impressive local companies I’ve come across. Kitchen Continental Ltd 26 Orwell Road, Felixstowe IP11 7DB 01394 279056 www.kitchenscontinentalsuffolk.co.uk

Local Lad Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

An Englishman’s Home is His Sandcastle I count my blessings every time I peer out my windows at home, not because I catch my reflection or anything, but because I’m fortunate enough to look directly out at Felixstowe’s glorious beaches. And boy aren’t they sandy at the moment? It makes it a lot easier to negotiate the route from towel to water’s edge whilst preserving some degree of dignity.

I recall various occasions previously when we still had the sharp shingle. I’d whip off my vest and kick off the flipflops. I’d then stand, survey the shore for onlookers before discretely flexing the old muscles (which are somewhat ‘relaxed’ these days) and, stomach sucked in, begin my descent down to the old briny. From the point your bare soles reach the pebbles to the time you finally feel the sting of the 12°C North Sea, any thread left of your masculinity is wrecked. Instead of resembling a Baywatch cast member, you smack more of Rylan Clark doing a hot coal walk accompanied by a chorus of: “Ouch, ow ow ow….”.

And then there are the young dads. They strut onto the beach with their toddler, mum lagging behind laden down with pushchair, nappy changing bag and other paraphernalia. Shielding his eyes from the sun with his hand the twenty-something dad appraises the strand with a scrutiny akin to surveying a plot of land for the construction

of a multi-storey carpark; nodding approvingly he stakes his claim in the sand.

When mum catches up, dad helps with the unpacking of nothing... other than the bucket and spade. He then sets to work to fabricate something Norman Foster would envy in his mind. He sits, spade in hand, tongue poking out the corner of his mouth and he begins.

The toddler, who is already bored with fetching sea water for his engrossed father, has joined mum for a bag of ‘Pom Bears’ and a custard cream, but dad persists.

Scraping, sculpting, dampening then patting down, dad ensures the sandy edifice rises from the beach, all of… thirty centimetres. Not taking his eyes off his creation, he reaches behind, hand outstretched he gestures to his significant other to hand him a homemade paper flag attached to a cocktail stick. Gently does it he stabs it in one of the four turrets! Finally allowing his nipper within touching distance of his bastion of manhood, the toddler promptly stamps on it!
