Local Business Here’s our very own Phil Harper from P.J Harper to tell us about his business...

P. J Harper Landscape Construction Ltd

I was born and raised in Felixstowe and on a part-time basis, I began gardening work from the age of twelve. This is where my passion for gardening and landscaping started.

I finished school in 1989 and from 1990 - 1993 I studied landscaping at Otley College.

Probably one of my most memorable projects was in 1993, when I went to work for The Royal Society for Nature Conservation in Jordan, in the Middle East. This was a one year placement. My work was based on the five nature reserves of wild Jordan (see photo above left). The work was so rewarding and it was here, getting my hands dirty, that I strengthened my skills as a landscaper. Luckily, I was asked to stay for a second year. I graduated from Writtle College in 1996 with a Higher National Diploma in Landscape Construction.

Other qualifications gained included The National Certificate in Horticulture - Arboriculture, The First Diploma in Landscape Studies and nearly every proficiency certificate going.

I started my landscape business in 1996 and since then, the business has gone from strength to strength. Our landscape design and construction projects are both private and commercial, the biggest to date being a design and build around a manor house in Royston costing in excess of 1.8million pounds.

Clear-View Removals

Another fun and rewarding project, was to build a show garden at the Suffolk Show. This consisted of a central water feature, black obelisks, paving, fencing and planting. I won the Perpetual Challenge Cup and came second in the garden design awards, a really lovely achievement.

Today P.J Landscape Construction Ltd has four competence and prolific landscapers, who have completed hard and soft landscaping in and around the Felixstowe area. Our reputation continues to excel and we have become very well-known in the area. Customer satisfaction is a huge part of our ethos and we pride ourselves on providing an exemplary service to our clients. If you have a garden project and you’d like to employ a reliable and ethical company to complete, just get in touch and I’d be very happy to talk to you. PJ Harper. Local Lad

5 Random ramblings by the lovely Dean Wales...

A Capital Idea

When you’re alone and life is making you lonely you can always go, downtown…well I’m sorry Petula my love, I’m not sure I would agree. I’m not so certain I’d fancy listening to the music of the traffic in the city either, or indeed do any lingering on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty. In actual fact, the flashing of that gargantuan red and white neon sign in Piccadilly Circus (did your nan ever say… blimey it’s like Piccadilly Circus in here?) is always a threat to me having one of my heads. I’m very sensitive you know. I often think I love London, but in reality I feel it is more that I’m in love with the concept of London? The excitement, the street entertainers and the diverse choice of food. That reminds me, I’ll never have another hot dog and onions from that grubby tin cart in Camden again. I knew his (a dodgy geezer; squat, unshaven, greasy locks and wearing a mucky Calvin Klein – with the K and C subtly switched – sweatshirt) food hygiene certificate was photocopied and coloured in in crayon. I was belching up frankfurter and mustard for three days after that little episode.

Yes, when one is wrapped up in a day trip to the capital to see a show, or being treated to the Harry Potter Studio Tour (I’ve never actually been to the Harry Potter Studio Tour but as my significant other is an avid reader of my column, this

is a vulgar and barefaced hint for a fabulous birthday gift idea – there’s still time to book!) London is an all-absorbing hullabaloo of loveliness. But then there are the days you have to go there for work. Those awful drawn-out hours of torment when you experience our glorious capital for what it really is.

The Tube. Euughh! Hell on tracks in my opinion. You’re already rammed in like sardines when a vest-clad mutant squeezes his way on the train to stand beside you. It has been a sticky day and the carriage already smells of a teenager’s football sock. He lifts his arm to grab the handrail exposing a hirsute armpit, resembling the Amazonian Basin. If you’re lucky you’ll be alighting at the next stop; if not, you’re facing this micro biosphere until you reach Turnham Green (or should that be Turn ‘em Green!). If you’re off to London, have a great day! Oh and have an eggscellent (it had to be done) Easter break.

Local Nature It’s the season for swifts to fly in all their glory in our skies...

Fascinating Facts about Swifts by Dr Adrian Cooper

Felixstowe’s Community Nature Reserve is going to spend the whole of April campaigning with Suffolk Wildlife Trust to try and help local populations of swifts. Here are some fascinating facts about swifts from Dr Adrian Cooper. The average weight of a swift is fourty grams – that’s about the same weight as a Cadbury’s Crème egg or a Crunchie bar. Swifts are related to humming birds.

The eyes of a swift are sunken, and have bristles around them to serve the swift as a type of sun-glasses.

Swifts are the fastest bird in the world in level flight. Their maximum speed in level flight, which has been scientifically measured, is 69.3mph. The colouring of swifts varies according to where they prefer to live. So, swifts which live in wetter areas tend to have a darker colouring than swifts which prefer drier habitats.

The fleas and parasites which live within the feathers of swifts are different to almost every other type of bird. This suggests that swifts started to evolve on their own a very long time ago. Their fleas and parasites started to evolve with them. Scientists believe that swifts started to go their own way in evolutionary development up to seventy million years ago – during Cretaceous times. British swifts are only with us for about three months of the year. For the rest of the time, they prefer to live in Africa. For their size, they have surprisingly powerful claws.

Their toes are arranged into twos. Each pair of toes points sideways, instead of forwards like most other birds. Although their long slender wings are great for fast flying,

Please mention

swifts are much less manoeuvrable when they need to fly more slowly.

The average life-span of a swift lasts over five years – surprisingly long for such a small bird. The oldest recorded age of a swift has been estimated to be eighteen years.

British swifts eat a greater variety of insects than any other British bird – up to 312 different species. Swifts can hunt for their food at speeds of up to 25mph. The promotion of these incredible charities and groups is made entirely possible by the support of our wonderful advertisers. Please use their services when you can.

A new book from local author, J.M Hewitt...

New Book by J.M Hewitt - Exclusion Zone I have explored many genres over the years, but writing psychological and suspense thrillers seems to come naturally. I write about the dark side of the human psyche and like to incorporate 20th century historical events in my work. Most recently I have been working on my latest novel, Exclusion Zone. It is set in 2015 in Chernobyl, a town that should be deserted after the 1986 nuclear disaster. On 26th April 1986, reactor four exploded at the factory in Pripyat, Chernobyl. At the same time teenager Afia Bello vanished from her home without a trace.

Almost thirty years after the nuclear disaster, people are still going missing from Chernobyl, but with no law enforcement willing to go into the Exclusion Zone, a spate of murders are going almost unnoticed... Though previously published, Exclusion Zone is my debut crime fiction novel. Crime thrillers have always been a passion, and winning a national pitch competition during last year’s BritCrime Festival was the boost I needed to get the novel off the ground. I always wanted to write about the Chernobyl disaster, it’s in living memory and the effects are still felt today. Who wouldn’t be intrigued by a place so geographically within reach, but completely off limits? The parallel between a man-made disaster and the subsequent reclamation of nature are endlessly fascinating. I knew that if my novel were to have the required impact, it needed to be released around the anniversary. The paperback launch of Exclusion Zone will be held at local independent bookstore, Stillwater Books in April, but the Kindle version is on sale now at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Exclusion-Zone-J-M-Hewittebook/dp/B01BSOQHTE/ I have a slot booked to discuss the novel alongside the

Felixstowe’s Cultural Food Corner Cut-Outs Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best...food!

French Onion Soup

No wine, no herbs, no broth. Just a good, hearty, traditional French onion soup. Done right, it’s magic! Meanwhile put two litres of water in another pot and slowly bring it to the boil.

Ingredients (serves 4) 1 kilogram small onion

50 grams unsalted butter 2 teaspoons flour

12 slices of toasted baguette

200 grams of grated gruyere cheese if you can get your hands on it, or any good quality cheese. Method

Peel and slice the onions. Here’s a little tip for you: peel them under running water to prevent you from crying if they’re powerful onions.

In a stainless steel pot, heat the butter until it melts and add the onions. This soup doesn’t yet require any seasoning, so don’t add any salt, pepper or anything else till the end. Put a lid on and let them sweat at medium low heat for about ten minutes, stirring occasionally. You do not want them to burn.

After the first ten minutes, take the lid off the first pot and continue cooking the onions until they are brown and caramelised. Stir often to caramelise them evenly and make sure to scrape the bottom of the pot to keep anything from burning. After about twenty minutes they should be beautifully dark brown and caramelised.

Add the flour and stir quickly to keep it from sticking. After a minute or so, add a ladle or two of the boiling water and continue stirring. Once integrated, add the rest of the water. Simmer the soup until it has reduced by about a quarter. Now is the point to add salt and pepper to taste.

Pour the soup into four oven-proof bowls. Sprinkle the cheese evenly over each bowl of soup and melt the cheese under the grill until bubbly. Serve right away with a few slices of toasted baguette. Now enjoy this warm bowl of heaven!

Mystery Shopper

Reviewing the latest and greatest of Felixstowe, here’s our Mystery Shopper to bring you her take on the best of our town...

Tea and Kate

I’m a child of the Sixties/Seventies, and my parents, in the spirit of the times, turned their backs on old fashioned ‘Americana’ and embraced all things Scandanavian…Danish teak to eat our smorgasbord on. Smorgasbord in our house was leftovers on Friday night long before the eve of the microwave oven.

I’ve recently come across the the Danish word ‘hygge', which is about creating a warm atmosphere, the warm glow of an evening spent with friends; a good word for winter, but perhaps a word that’s more about a way to live your life, rather than the name of a season. It was happenstance that son-number-two saw the Tea and Kate shop out of the corner of his eye and we popped in to have a look! This little gem of a shop is tucked up on Victoria Street, off Orwell Road. It’s fresh, white walls with whitewashed floorboards – it’s a blank canvas to allow Kate Bradbury’s merchandise to shine. She has described her shop as a ‘concept shop’ and a ‘small emporium’ and although these appear to be very different ideas, both are applicable to ‘Tea and Kate’.

It’s a joy to just wander around and look at the finely made, simple, quirky items from mainly Scandinavia and Japan: small perfectly formed dollhouse pieces sit harmoniously next to vintage teak and industrial signage.

and furniture. It is equally the place to pop in to pick up a hand printed card as it is to choose a Danish design classic for your home. The shop supports an online shop, which makes sense in today’s market and has an engaging presence in social media. Kate herself was very warm and welcoming – the epitome of ‘hygge’! My only disappointment? I was hoping for a cup of tea as the name suggested! Tea and Kate 10a Victoria Street Felixstowe Suffolk

Felixstowe Town and Around News

Felixstowe Waves Swimming Club

A lot of initiatives are being launched to support the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations in April. One such is the Clean for the Queen idea and the Town Council is supporting this idea in a practical way. Councillors are involved in cleaning up the footpath running behind the houses in Highfield Road which at the time of writing is littered with detritus. This could be a lovely area if cared for properly and we hope to start that process on the 5th March. We are being joined by some Sea Cadets and an officer – so we should be able to achieve a good clean up. Other events to celebrate the Queen’s birthday are being planned in Felixstowe and details of these will be forthcoming soon.

Congratulations to all our swimmers who represented the club at this year’s Suffolk Championships Gala held at Crown Pools in Ipswich. Overall Felixstowe had considerable success with some amazing performances over the three weekends. We had representation from Felixstowe Swimming Club in ninety-seven of the races and sixteen swimmers progressed to reach the main competition.

The Town Council is also supporting the Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth programme. A flag has been supplied and I will be raising this on the 14th March (Commonwealth Day) on the flag pole on the promenade at the end of Arwela Road. It will be good for the town to be part of an international event of this kind. We hear so much about Europe at the moment that an opportunity to remember the Commonwealth of which we are part of, is good. The District Council raised the basic council tax rate by 1.99% in February which will add a small sum to all council tax bills for the coming year.

By the time you read this article, I hope that work on the long awaited yacht pond demolition will have commenced. The date given for the start is the 4th April and when completed will feature a grassed open space, a mix of hard standing car parking for seventy vehicles and a reinforced grassed events area for multi-purpose activity that could attract fairs, markets and exhibitions. Also included will be two sites for kiosks, a cycle lane through the area, landscaping and lighting. The completion date of all this work is sometime in August. Consideration is being given to the closure of our recycling centre in Carr Road on Wednesday of each week, but opening for longer hours at weekends and Bank Holidays when use of the centre is at its highest demand. My first reaction to this news was concern, but having investigated further it would seem that the demand for longer opening hours at weekends outweighs the Wednesday closure. A shop selling recycled goods will be opened at Foxhall – I think we should have one in Felixstowe but I am told there is not enough room on the site. The one we used to have was very popular.

I had a sneak preview of one of the rooms at the Premier Inn. It was lovely with every comfort needed to make a stay at the Inn an enjoyable experience. Must pay the in-house restaurant a visit soon. Enjoy Spring!

Doreen Savage.

Please mention

We reached the finals in eight of the races and brought home three bronze and three silver medals which is a tremendous result. Individually our swimmers achieved sixty-three personal best times, which demonstrates the huge improvements they have made during the season. Indeed we also had eight qualification times for the East of England regional championships to be held in May. A special mention goes to Faye Hermon and Beth Young who were both selected to swim for Suffolk following their fantastic performances.

Finally, a big thank you to our Head Coach, David Treliving and his coaching team for the efforts to get the swimmers ready for the gala and to our dedicated team of helpers and parents for looking after our swimmers during the championships.

Colneis Flower Club For our first meeting of our new year, we were lucky to have Linda Kingcott from Leigh-on-Sea who demonstrated with the theme ‘Fascinating Rhythm’. Linda’s first arrangement was based on Ginger Rogers’ green ‘feather’ dress which she loved and Fred Astaire hated because the feathers spoilt his black suit! Pale pink tulips represented Fred and green carnations for Ginger. Perfect. Continuing with old musicals, we had ‘Thank heaven for little girls’ from Gigi. A modern parallel, created using variegated foliage with gorgeous Avalanche roses representing the ‘little girls’. Beautiful. My Fair Lady, renowned for its black and white race scene, was a very pretty ‘hat’ using manipulated aspidistra leaves sprayed black for the bow and white roses and carnations for the wide brim. Next, South Pacific was a sunset using red anthuriums, yellow tulips and yellow orchids while the snow scene in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was depicted by variegated foliage and white flowers. Linda’s finale ‘The March of the Siamese Children’ from the King and I used lovely foliage, red anthuriums, anastasia chrysanthemums and a cymbidium orchid. Well known musical shows were brought to life and throughout we were given tips on growing her foliage from cuttings and how to manipulate different types of foliage creating unusual effects. A memorable evening. Why not join us for another memorable evening on Thursday 21 April. David Thomson will demonstrate the theme ‘I.T.M.A.’. The Practice Piece is IKEBANA. We meet at 7.30pm in the Old Felixstowe Community Centre, Ferry Road, Felixstowe, IP11 9NB. There are comfortable seats

Lioness Club of Felixstowe In February, eight Felixstowe Lionesses and five supporting Lions spent an enjoyable and interesting weekend at the Mercure Letchworth Hall Hotel for the annual Lionesses Conference. A real feeling of solidarity prevailed as discussions were held concerning the future of Lioness Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland. Reports on display from the various clubs showed just how much Lionesses contribute to their local communities. At the end of the afternoon, we were delighted to listen to Trisha Stewart, ‘Miss October’ in the original Alternative WI Calendar (played by Helen Mirren in the film). Her talk was extremely funny and even slightly risqué at times! Two Lionesses were persuaded to have their photo taken with Trisha, much to her amusement that anybody would want to do so… We had more fun in the evening with a Dinner Dance and an Abba Tribute Band. Unfortunately we had to cancel the planned Chocolate Bingo due to lack of support, but would like to thank those who did apply for tickets. We now look forward to our next fundraisers, a Clairvoyant Evening and a Quiz Night, both in April, and in the meantime we wish everybody a Happy Easter. For details of events and information about Lionesses, please email Val: vijinks880@hotmail.com.

Lions Club of Felixstowe The Club was busy last month with the Pig Race which was held at the Felixstowe Trades and Labour Club on the 27th February. We would like to thank our Race Sponsors; - Banham Dark, Nick Barber Auctions, Fred Olsen Travel, Ivan Pike, Simone’s Hair Salon, The Bounty Fisheries, Scott Beckett and Deben Butchers who got us off to a great start. Ian took us through his life and works, illustrating how this multi-talented artist has such a unique view of life and art. So why not join us as a member. We meet at Tower Hall, Broadlands Way, Rushmere St Andrew on the first Wednesday of most months. Lectures last about an hour, are wonderfully illustrated and are presented by national and international lecturers. Guests and nonmembers welcome, provided we have available space. The performances are at Fados House opposite the Half Moon Walton, on June 16th, 17th and 18th. Enquiries ring 01394 671306. We always welcome new members with open arms. Contact Su on the number quoted! Interest in the Casino Evening has not been forthcoming so it will not now take place. Pity – but we will do something else at a later date.

Gainsborough Club On Tuesday March 1st we held our monthly meeting and AGM at the St Felix Hall in Gainsborough Road. The meeting was as quick, smooth and stressfree as always and we were able to present a substantial cheque to our charity of the year the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service. As well we had an excellent illustrated talk about the work of the purely voluntary service of the SARS. Next month Mr C Cushing will give a talk called ‘How to Steal a Picture’ (Art History). Sounds promising! This will be at 7.30pm on Tuesday 5th April, at the Felix Hall. Local Event In preparation for the Felixstowe Carnival 2016, here’s Sally Gallant with some information...

Felixstowe Carnival

by Sally Gallant, Chairwomen of the Carnival Committee

According to Chinese Horoscope 2016, is the year of the Monkey which supposedly is the year of ‘competition and challenge,’ which is very apt for me and the fellow Felixstowe Carnival Committee. There is an incredible amount of work involved in putting on a carnival the size of ours. One thing is for sure, it is a challenge! The committee give their time freely and it is largely through experience, trial and error and the help of supporters that we are able to continue to put on an event of this size.

The theme this year is Rio Carnival, so if you want to join the procession by building a float, there is great scope for some bright colours, flamboyant dressing up, dancing and razzamatazz! Or maybe for you, Rio 2016 is about the Olympics in which case you can grab your lycra and your leotard and theme your float around something energetic and inspiring. Why not compete to build the best float of 2016? We have already signed a number of local bands and artists

for both our main stage and community performance area; there is something to suit all tastes, genres and age groups.

By the time you read this we will have selected the Carnival Royalty 2016 and will be busy sorting out their outfits, hair and make-up and their transport for the procession to present them to you! There is still time to reserve a trade stall if you are a local business, advertise in our programme, sponsor us or in other ways become involved with the carnival. Please visit our website for further details or see our facebook page: www.felixstowecarnival.org facebook: Felixstowe Carnival

Local Holidays

Local person, Brian Blackmore has some great tips when it comes to caravaning. Here he is to tell you some of them...

Holidaying with a Caravan

Holiday time is once again heading our way and as caravaning is becoming very popular as a holiday home favourite, here are a few tips you might like to consider before taking that big step: 1. Buy a second hand one. Why? Because caravans do not hold their price very well, so if after the first year you decide that this sort of holiday is not for you then you won’t lose too much money when you come to sell the van.

2. Consider what sort of site you want to be on. There are sites that are open for most of the year, meaning you can spend Christmas and New Year in it. These sites usually have a club house and swimming pool. There are different types of site: an owner’s only site, which is great as you get to know other owners and you can personalise your space to make it special. Then there are the sites with a mixture of owner’s and holiday makers. If you have friends that own a caravan, then these sites are great as you can rent a van for them at reduced rates. Peewit Park, which is a family run site, is brilliant when it comes to buying, selling or exchanging your van and also have two recently refurbished static homes to rent.

3. Site fees - Most of the sites are reasonable and including water and rates, work out at about £3600 per year for all the year openings Down South or in Cornwall they can be as much as £5000. Before buying a van read the rules first.

They vary from site to site. The site I am on will only allow plastic decking but not plastic sheds. Some sites will only allow one car per van and other vehicles to be put onto the site a car park. Some won’t allow commercial vans on their site. Some sites won’t allow you to keep a van more than ten years, then you either get off the site or part exchange, where as others allow you to over-run your lease providing you keep your area nice and pay any bills on time, which I have found the case to be here in Felixstowe. 4. If you do decide to buy a van then I like to wish you all the very best and I hope you enjoy your new found way of leisure time as I have done for many years.

As with any holiday, research it well and above all, enjoy it! Brian Blackmore, van owner and local author.

15 More news from Jackamans’ budding Solicitor...

A Day in the Life of a Trainee Solicitor I thought I would use this month’s update to highlight something that we suggest to most of our clients – Lasting Powers of Attorney. Few people want to think about what will happen if they become unable to manage their financial affairs or make decisions about their own welfare.

Some assume that this will never happen to them, with others believing that their relatives or partner would somehow automatically have the right to take on this role. Unfortunately, this simply isn’t the case – there is no guarantee that financial institutions or medical staff will consult or take instruction from these people, even if there is agreement between the relatives and friends who may wish to have their say. This is why we have Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). These come in two forms: the Property and Financial Affairs document allows attorneys to perform tasks such as selling property, making investments and running bank accounts, and the Health and Welfare document gives attorneys decision-making powers regarding the

individual’s care once they have lost mental capacity. Without these documents, managing the affairs of someone who has lost the capacity to make their own decisions becomes far more complicated, and the more complex and costly Court of Protection application process may have to be followed. Jackamans Solicitors are always happy to assist with the preparation of LPAs, although the documents can also be found online. Think of them as an insurance policy – whilst you may never need to use them, knowing that they are in place can be a real comfort. This article provides only a general summary and is not intended to be comprehensive.

Special legal advice should be taken in any individual situation. For further information do contact our conveyancing department on 01394 279636

Sponsored Page It’s amazing how many artists there are in Felixstowe. To help showcase them, Kerseys Solicitors have kindly sponsored this page...

Local Artist

Cherrie Stevens Cherrie learning a weaving technique in Laos

In my studio, on Felixstowe seafront, I practice a type of free art weaving called SAORI.... a Zen term roughly meaning ‘finding the beauty in all things...’ I love to use findings from the beach and countryside as well as all the beautiful yarns now available. Saori style weaving is all about colour and texture and the combination of the two to create something unique and exciting. Every year I try to travel somewhere that informs and inspires my work, looking forward to new ideas and inspiration from the traditional weavers. I have just returned from my travels to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam where I learnt a great deal.

Preferred transportation while touring Vietnam

I travelled to the highlands of North Vietnam, which is about 200km from the Chinese border. The people there are called the Flower H’Mong people who still wear their traditional dress, which you can see in the photos to the left. They move freely between China and Vietnam. It was a great experience. All my travelling is always inspirational, which is why you’ll find photos of my trips on my facebook page (see below for details). There are textiles everywhere and I always relate that back to my practice. There are some places where I’ve had the opportunity to learn traditional methods of weaving, for example on Loas, they use their feet to hold the tension (that’s me having a go in the top photo).

Thriving markets in the highlands of Vietnam

Some of Cherrie’s students at her studio

For those of you who would like to try free weaving and learn about the philosphy behind it, feel free to contact me about tutorials. I run classes in my seafront studio in Felixstowe, throughout the year and in just two and half days you could complete something as lovely as a wall hanging, a table runner, a scarf or personalised gift, such as the ones you see my students holding in the photo to the left. Classes are fun and creative and you are all very much welcome.

Although you can contact me any time to view or buy my work, the Suffolk Open Studios event provides as lovely way to tour other local artists’ studios too. The Suffolk Open Studio (www.suffolkopenstudios.org), is in June. In my studio, I have many unusual and interesting yarns from around the world, some of which are for sale. Also on display are wearables and jewellery I make, which are also for sale. I will have a loom ready for visitors of all ages to use. So if you would like to try weaving, come along, grab a handful of yarn and add your creativity to create your unique and bespoke weaving. I look forward to meeting you and do have a look at my various online pages to see more examples of my work and the places I travel for inspiration. 07577 828666 cherrie55uk@yahoo.co.uk www.facebook.com/WeaverbyrdHandWeavingAndTextileArtStudio www.suffolkopenstudios.org/component/comprofiler/userprofile/cstevens

Admiral Lord Nelson, English naval hero, is said to have formed a friendship with the composer, Joseph Haydn, in the early C19th Vienna, when his Mass in D minor was performed to honour Nelson, who was hailed as the “Saviour of Europe” after defeating Napoleon. Local Theatre More events from our very own theatre, The Spa Pavilion...

Gerry Crosses The Mersey to Play at Spa In the early sixties, Gerry and the Pacemakers worked the same Liverpool/Hamburg circuit as the Beatles and many other groups before being signed in 1962 by manager Brian Epstein, as his second group after the Beatles. The following year, under the direction of producer George Martin, they burst on the scene with three consecutive No.1 hits –“How Do You Do It”, “I Like It” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” – proving themselves serious competitors to the Beatles. Over the next few years, most of the Pacemakers subsequent hits were actually written by Gerry Marsden, including “”It’s All Right”, “I’m the One”, “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Cryin’” and “Ferry Cross the Mersey”(also the name of a film in which they starred).

“Gerry Cross The Mersey” comes to the Spa this month and is a journey down memory lane with Gerry performing all the great songs from his repertoire interspersed with stories and anecdotes from his days on the road. Gerry says “I simply love performing this show as it gives me the opportunity to really connect with my audience.” Gerry and his band will be at the Spa Pavilion on Friday 15th April from 7.30pm.

Local Charity & Their News

BASIC Life Charity

Since registering as an independent Charitable Trust in 2000, BASIC has been able to assist many groups, organisations and individuals with financial, practical and general support. We are a ‘people’ charity and believe our mission is to support those in need and to provide assistance for those who are otherwise prevented from realising their own charitable goals. At the time of writing, the writer had just cleared a large amount of frost from his windscreen before heading into work – we hope by the time The Felixstowe Magazine pops through your door the weather will be a bit more ‘spring like!’

March was a very busy time for BASIC. Here’s what we did: Ralph Ryder

Ralph was a well-known local resident who passed away suddenly during early March. His family, who were unable to pay for his funeral, approached Amanda at Stressless, Walton for assistance.

Amanda in turn approached us and we opened a Just Giving page where we requested assistance from the community. Our opening target of £1500 was reached in just THREE days! We raised it to £2000 and again this new target was reached just TWO days later!

We also received donations at both of our shops and some were made directly to the undertaker, David Button, Walton (who had offered a much-reduced service) – making a total to date of close to £3000! It is so touching to see our wonderful community at work to help each other and we know Ralph’s family are so very touched. We wonder what Ralph himself would have thought and we’re sure he would have been surprised to know how highly he was thought of by those who knew him – and those who didn’t. The Anchor Bakery

Jake and the staff at Anchor Bakery on High Road East, approached us with the offer of free, yes FREE, bakery products! These are items which have been freshly baked but unsold and are still in great condition. We have been collecting and distributing them twice a week and passing on to those in need in our community.

The slight dilemma had been ‘how can we pass on fresh produce to those in the most need’. Hmm – well we have started to register users of our food bank and have formed an ‘information tree’ so when fresh produce is available we can advise those customers. If you are a food bank user please register with us, we only need a first name and telephone number or email address, and we’ll add you. We will also advise when bakery products are available via our Facebook page. At the moment we can only offer the bakery products at our Walton shop. Trimley Carnival

The fantastic people who make up the Trimley Carnival Committee are working hard to make this year’s event another success. BASIC were selected to receive a donation from the 2015 event at their open day on March 12th – a massive thank you for selecting us! Please support the 2016 event which will be on Saturday 9th July with a theme of ‘Rule Britannia – Queen and Country’ in celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. If you haven’t been involved why not contact one of the committee members and offer your help? Contact trimleycarnival@gmail.com BASIC Fashion Show!

We will be holding our first BASIC fashion show on Saturday 28th May at Seaton Road Church Hall – The items modelled will all have been donated and we’ll have refreshments, a raffle and much more. Tickets will be just £3 and will be available at both of our shops or via Sarah on 07454 812078. The models themselves will be our staff including Angela, Becki and yes, Graham too! So if you fancy a fun night out please get in touch. More details next month. Have a great April!

Orwell Connection Choir is looking for a new conductor. Are you interested? Orwell Connection Choir was established in 1986 in Felixstowe and continues to thrive. However, our current conductor is moving away and we are therefore looking for someone to take his place, from August.

The choir is adults only and we perform a varied range of music of all genres, usually in 3 or 4 part harmonies. We have concerts in June and December each year for local charities with all proceeds going to those charities.

Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings in central Felixstowe. If you feel that you could help us we would love to hear from you. Please contact Jan on 01394 211120.
