Welcome to April... This month’s issue has to be one of my favourites - not only do we get to hear from the artist who created The Wickers (p.13) but we also publish our first official Food Review for The Big Food Blog (p.10). As a good friend of mine said, “It’s all in the name of science... or something!” This month, Felixstowe hosts its Easter Fun Fair starting from 14th April on the seafront, don’t miss out. There are also plenty of other events you can view on our What’s On page.

Here’s to a great April!

Flying in the face of air travel Flying is said to be the safest form of travel. You arrive at your destination (whether that is the Seychelles or the Costa Del Hangover) in superquick time, giving you those crucial extra hours to slap on the factor 50 and hit the bar for a pickled egg and a jug of sangria. But come on, isn’t flying just loathsome? Firstly, most of us fly with the low-cost airlines. That means we stuff a tiny suitcase with 15 pairs of shorts, 7 pairs of jeans, 10 t-shirts (mostly with pug motifs or printed with Nigel Farage depicted as a muppet), 5 pairs of flip-flops, 4 pairs of pants (turning them inside out half way through the week will make them last) and a pair of Addinuff trainers. This ritual is all so we don’t have to pay the hold-luggage charge. But you see that in itself has a knock-on effect. The trouble with this strategy is that you have to put the said case in the overhead locker. So, you arrive at the airport 9 hours before boarding because you’ve been smug and checked in online and you don’t now need to attend the bag-drop. You cram the pocket on the side of your cabin bag with your belt, watch, phone and loose change and holding up your Sponge Bob Squarepants shorts (because you’ve now removed your belt and ordered the wrong waist size from Ebay) you waddle over to security. You pass through the arch-of-shame and it bleeps. The security guy the other side

6

“Random ramblings by our local lad” asks you to raise your arms in readiness for a pat down. You do so; your shorts fall to the ground. You’re finally in the main terminal stinking of the 7 types of aftershave you’ve squirted on your neck from the duty-free shop and you head for a full-English which costs 30 times more than you’d pay in the high street. Right, you’re rammed with sausage, egg, bacon, hash-brown, toast, black-pudding (what really is that?) etc. and you’ve planted yourself in front of the departure board waiting for your gate to be announced. And… there it is! You’re legging it to the gate barging the folk with sprogs and zimmer-frames aside so you can get to the front of the queue just so you can secure a space above your seat for your tiny case (well it does contain that bag of Pickled Onion flavoured Monster Munch and you may get peckish on the flight). Well, my word budget is tight so it may have to be another time we ponder the guy sitting next to you on the flight with halitosis, smelly feet and who insists on sneezing in your direction. And don’t get me started on the toilets...

BASIC Life Charity updates March was a really busy month at BASIC, with both of our shops proving to be popular with customers and our online sales on Ebay and Amazon reaching new heights. The result has been our opportunity to assist many local people with problems ranging from helping with emergency gas/electric supplies to offering assistance to families, often with the need being to support the welfare of local children. Our pop-up shops at St. Edmunds Church, Langer Road and at St. Philips Church Hall, Wadgate Road (both on Tuesdays from 11am) are also welcoming more and more visitors each week. Following the recent problems with food production in Europe we're pleased to see the normal range of food being donated by the brilliant community-minded supermarkets, Tesco and Morrisons, together with Anchor Bakery.

“A regular update from this brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support It would be fantastic if any of the other local supermarkets or independents would join in sharing food destined for waste with the community. Finally we're so pleased to announce that BASIC have been chosen as the Felixstowe Trades and Labour Club 'Charity of the Year'. This is a great honour for us and we hope you will join us in attending many of the events The Labour Club hold during the year, often with profits being passed to charity. Have a great April!

Chocolate avocado dessert The perfect treat for Easter! This recipe is gluten, dairy, egg and refined-sugar free! We love avocado. Not only is it full of amazingly good fat, one of your five a day and has more fibre and potassium in it than a banana, it’s also extremely versatile. We’ve whipped up this chocolate avocado dessert to cure your sweet cravings whilst still being a healthy alternative to sugary puds - and we won’t tell the kids how good it is for you if you don’t! Ingredients 3 x ripe avocados 4 tbsp pure cocoa powder (unsweetened) 4 tbsp agave syrup or honey 125ml coconut milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp sea salt 1 tbsp cocoa nibs Method Halve the avocados as neatly as possible, remove the seed and scoop the insides into a blender. Put the halved skins to one side as you may want to use these later. Add the cocoa

“Celebrating Felixstowe’s many cultural delights with what we love best... food!” powder, syrup or honey, milk, vanilla and sea salt and blend thoroughly (depending on your blender and how it deals with thick mixtures you may need to add more coconut milk to help it all blend together). Once it is smooth and there are absolutely no lumps, add the cocoa nibs and mix through with a spoon. They make a lovely crunchy texture to the dessert but if you have fussy eaters you can always skip this step. You can then put the mixture back into the avocado halves, or an appropriate dessert bowl and chill for 30 minutes. Add a scattering of cocoa nibs to the top for a garnish, serve and enjoy! The Artisan Smokehouse “A food review of a truly hidden little gem in Falkenham.” When you first walk in to The Artisan Smokehouse at Goose Barn, you are instantly welcomed by a cosy atmosphere and the most incredible smell of delicately smoked ingredients. I have to say, I only came across this place accidentally - and I’m so glad I did. Readers, you would be a nutter not to visit this little gem. The huge glass doors at the back of a barn act as the perfect live painting to a beautiful field with it’s own resident horses, and a unique view of Felixstowe’s water tower. Something I’ve not seen locally before is the sheer variety of smoked ingredients; from garlic and chillies to home-made duck and salmon. The Artisan stock an amazing range of exotic pantry fillers, from Chipotle Morita Chillies (great in stews or casseroles), smoked oils, spices and cheese, to apple butter, rosemary crackers and Suffolk-made honey, not forgetting the roasted coffee from The Firestation Coffee Roasters in Woodbridge, made from coffee beans from the most exotic corners of the world. Tim and Gill, owners of this small multi award-winning smokehouse, began their passion with a semi-professional smoker. This attempt to satiate Tim’s passion for food completely changed both their lives. After much experimentation, this little love of food turned into a business in 2010. Hard work has won the couple many Great Taste Awards, Young British Foodies Meat Champion, Suffolk Food & Drink Awards Pride of Suffolk, along with the odd ‘Best in Show’ rosette here and there! The Artisan Smokehouse take pride in the quality of ingredients they use and are dedicated to using ethically sourced products, prioritising local British producers. All their smoked meats and fish are traditionally dry cured using no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. They use maple wood to smoke their products, which accounts for that delicious delicate flavour. And get this, if you want to take a bit of Artisan magic home with you, you can buy one of their gorgeous luxurious hampers. When I made my visit I opted for the newly introduced 3 course lunch with wine for a very reasonable £19. It all started with a lovely crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc and a starter of smoked stilton and pecan nut paté, served with fresh bread from The Bread Basket in Walton. Mmm... I’ve never been the best of fans of stilton but this was amazing - so subtle and not overbearing at all. For my main course I thought I’d try the Seafood Platter. This was where Tim got to really show off his talents; with two types of smoked salmon, salad and fresh bread, I really couldn’t fault anything. The smell was amazing and the fish was divine. Every bit tasted of a sunny holiday far away from the day-to-day hustle and bustle of life. With a scoop of luxurious chocolate and vanilla ice cream to complete my meal, I felt both rejuvenated and energised to carry on with the day! Well done to Tim, Gill and the team. If I didn’t have a home of my own and the need to earn a living, I think I could quite easily move in with you permanently!

Felixstowe town and around Having just returned from a visit to the Town Hall I was delighted to see that the frame of the structure of the new pier head is now in position. It really looks impressive and by the time you read this article more of it will have taken shape, signifying an exciting future for the pier and the resort. It’s that “in between” time of the year when there are lots of things being planned for the coming months, but as I write we seem to be stuck in a cold, wet, early Spring! You will be reading and hearing much about two exciting events that are taking place later in the year. The first is the Armed Forces Day, incorporating Darrells Day at Landguard Fort which takes place over the weekend of the 24th & 25th June. This will be a mega weekend for entertainment of all kinds and for Felixstowe to be hosting Armed Forces Day on the 24th is a real coup for the resort. The second event is a Multi-Cultural day on the 12th August which will be centred around the Triangle and shared space. It is planned to bring together all the various communities that live in the town and display the best of their individual cultures. We used to have an event in the Leisure Centre every year on the same theme, but this hasn’t happened for some time. Watch out for all the publicity and information about these two events in the future. The beach hut consultation period has now ended with over 700 responses being received regarding the process. (I found it impossible to give a definitive answer to some of the questions when I looked at the document and I know I wasn’t alone!) The responses are being collated and it will be interesting to read the outcomes and how these will influence the thinking of the Cabinet at Suffolk Coastal regarding the future management of the beach huts.

“Update from our local town councillor” Another controversial matter also reached the end of its process in late February. This was the proposed development of the land at the end of Ferry Road. A long and hard-fought battle had been waged against this development – not regarding the fact that houses were being built, but the inclusion of five threestorey blocks of flats and the siting of some of the housing adjacent to existing properties did cause great concern. The planning meeting at SCDC was attended by many residents and the ward councillors – Steve Gallant and I. Representations were made to the committee by several speakers and the debate lasted several hours. However, at the end the members of the committee decided to approve the application before them. Huge disappointment felt by those who had fought so hard and long against this development. Congratulations to The Leydens Community Centre which celebrated its 1st birthday during March. I had the pleasure of performing the opening ceremony as Mayor last year, and was delighted to attend the birthday lunch at the centre this year. It is managed by Alex who has a team of incredibly hardworking volunteers who prepare and serve delicious food at very reasonable prices to anyone who wishes to use the centre any day of the week. Well done everyone! Doreen Savage.

New ad for next editions:

Caroline said, “Even ordinary lives can be surprising. I remember my grandmother, Lily, but it was only when my father told me her story that I came to admire her great strength.

by your great grandmother, telling you about her friends, family and day-to-day life in a time so very different from today? Great grandmother’s stories may be lost forever, but you can make sure that yours live on for future generations. At Family Stories, Caroline and Elizabeth make it easy to turn stories into beautiful books.

Are you sitting on the family archives?

“Lily married a young architect and had a child, but her husband died, forcing her to move back to her parent’s pub, where two extra mouths to feed were not welcome. She worked hard, but was desperate to escape the life of drudgery. Arthur needed a housekeeper and so they married and had two children. But Arthur was a controlling, bad-tempered man and Lily feared him, telling her neighbour, ‘If I disappear, look down the well because that’s where I’ll be.’ “Nevertheless, Lily was always a rebel. In older age, when her hair became thin and she wanted a wig, Arthur refused to allow it. Lily simply took a taxi to the nearest town and bought herself not one but two wigs, each in a different colour!”

Tracy Barritt-Brown Have you ever wondered who was the creator of our beautiful Spa Gardens sculptures? Well, here she is, the lovely Tracy Barritt-Brown. Tell our readers about you I would describe myself as a Guernsey-girl of mid 1960’s vintage, married to Michael and mother to Daisy aged 8 1/4. I make art in varied forms such as clay and willow sculptures, ceramic objects or decorated glassware, as well as painting. I am also part of the Associate of the Society of Equestrian Artists. I have lived in Felixstowe on and off for the last 6 years. Felixstowe has a thriving arts scene and I am a great fan of Art on the Prom and Suffolk Open Studios. The opportunities for learning new skills are abundant in Felixstowe. Felixstowe and East Anglia have a great artistic heritage which can be seen every day. Tell us more about the photo above This is a willow installation in the Spa Gardens which has been dubbed "the Wickers". I am so pleased people are using it as intended to take photographs of their own grand day out, much as Victorian families would have had a day at the seaside in the original gardens. I had not anticipated they would become so popular with people dressing them up for Christmas and Valentine’s Day!

I was asked to create this primarily as the installation artist for Art on the Prom, however, when I provided the drawings to Felixstowe Forward director Helen Greengrass, further funds were provided for materials, willow and steel rods, and the family was born over several months. I did forage additional material from all around Felixstowe and added some shells from my native island of Guernsey for good measure. I used the artist fee to rent studio space for which I am extremely grateful to another local ceramic artist, Louise Greenwood, for putting up with me and my twigs! I decided early on in the inception of the project to donate the finished work to the gardens to be enjoyed by all visitors. It has survived Storm Doris with barely a hair out of place and I hope it will be around for several years to come. If readers would like to meet me, I’ll be at Art on the Prom on 3rd September. How can readers contact you? They can call me on 07497099946, or email me at tracybarrittbrown@yahoo.co.uk. FB: tracybarrittbrown - www.tracybarrittbrown.com Work is also available from Suffolk Living on Orwell, Pixie Jo’s Emporium near Woodbridge and Brett Gallery near Lavenham.
