The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - September 2018

WELCOME TO

September

It’s time for most people to go back to work or school (although there are some of us who haven’t been away!). There’s plenty going on in September if you do have some free time, though. We are very excited about our good friends, the Jive Aces (UK’s number 1 jive and jazz band, and Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalists), performing in Felixstowe this month (p.28)!

There’s also our much-loved Art on the Prom (see What’s On) and the fun-filled Felixstowe Heritage Weekend (p.27) and we also have news of plans for the upcoming youth and arts centre in the heart of Woodbridge. We’re excited to announce that our new Ipswich publication launches this month! Check it out on our website, birdypublications.com. Lots going on as ever, so pop the kettle on and enjoy your read!

Book Review

A review of The Cast by Danielle Steel

Women are strong. They can raise families, succeed in business, and have fulfilling lives, as long as they’re willing to work hard. This is the focus of Danielle Steel’s book “The Cast,” published in May of 2018. Kait Whittier comes from tough stock. Her grandmother was left a single mother of four after her husband committed suicide during the Depression. Not only did she find a way to support her own children, but also to build an empire to pass down to future generations. Following in her grandmother’s footsteps, Kait manages to raise three independent children by herself while writing for a wellknown magazine in New York City. Now that they are grown and live far away, she misses them dearly but tells herself she is perfectly happy with her life as it is. One night at a party, Kait meets Zack, a television producer from Los Angeles, and tells him about her grandmother and the legacy she left behind. He finds himself captivated by her story and tells her she should write about her, or someone like her, for a new show. She dismisses the idea and tells herself that he was only being polite. Stuck indoors during a terrible blizzard, Kait sits down at her computer and starts to write. Before she knows it, 15 hours have passed and she finds herself immersed in the lives of three fictional women who are determined to succeed against all odds. Sending her manuscript off to Zack on a whim, she doesn’t expect much to come from it, but a short time later Kait is in Hollywood living a life she had never dreamed about. All is not perfect though as she wrestles with celebrity egos and deals with the tragedies that befall both her and her new-found friends. 4

The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - September 2018

“The Cast” really gets to the heart of family relationships and the new connections that are made as we make our way through life. It explores the unexpected events that occur without warning, both the happy and the sad, and how people can adapt to almost anything. But most of all, it celebrates the strength of women now and in the past, and how their decisions have changed the paths of those who have followed in their wakes. To find out more about this book and New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel, please visit http://daniellesteel.com/. Reveiw by Susan Baldani. Susan has an MA in Education and a BA in Psychology. She enjoys writing and in addition to writing articles about small town life, is currently working on her second book. Fabulous evening at The Riverside Film Feast launch

Our thanks also to Michael Palin who was a delight to interview and spend an evening with.

In October we are hosting our first ever film festival, Film Feast Suffolk, which will screen feature films, documentaries and short films from all around the world on the subject of food and drink. The festival is a fringe event of the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival and will also involve pop-up screenings at our partner cafes in town - The Fire Station, The Tea Hut and Honey & Harvey. At the end of each day a three-course meal from one of our feature films screened will be recreated at our partner restaurants - The Riverside, The Table and The Galley.

Many thanks also to those who helped to make the night such a success, from our sponsors to the photographers and all technical personnel on hand. We couldn’t have wished for a better launch night and guest to kick-start our festival.

Tickets for each event and screening are on sale now via our new festival website www.filmfeast.co.uk and The Riverside website.

Please go through the programme and start booking your tickets filmfeast.co.uk.

Many thanks to all who came to The Riverside to support our launch night of this fantastic event. We had a full house and the chefs pulled out all the stops with a three-course meal inspired by our screening of A PRIVATE FUNCTION.

A local film production are looking for actors and extras: If you are or know of any budding film stars, then take a look at the link below and see if you fit the bill.

FUNDRAISING BEGINS ON LANDMARK WOODBRIDGE YOUTH, COMMUNITY AND ARTS CENTRE Jetty Lane launches website for donations that will leave a legacy for future generations Suffolk organisation Jetty Lane CIC has begun fundraising for its planned new youth and arts centre in the heart of Woodbridge. Woodbridge is in desperate need of community space since the Woodbridge Youth Club was demolished in 2017, leaving many local youth, arts and community initiatives homeless. As the town continues to expand with new housing developments, Jetty Lane CIC was set up to build a new space for community and local groups - many of which have not been able to find a permanent home in the town. Following incredibly positive feedback at various meetings and public consultations, Jetty Lane CIC has launched a new website to provide more information on the project and as a portal for donations towards the £188,821 needed to keep the company running until construction begins next year. Jetty Lane was founded by County Councillor for Woodbridge Caroline Page, Caroline Rutherford from local youth charity Just42, Group Scout leader, 1st Woodbridge - Adam Thorpe, and local resident Cordelia Richman. The planned building will be located near the River Deben and will comprise eight individual studios for artists, two halls, hireable space for community groups to use at an affordable rent, as well as hotdesking and office facilities provided on a commercial basis. The company have been delighted to be granted a long lease of 125 years on the land at a peppercorn rent by the local County Council. Jetty Lane will provide much-needed space for theatre groups, martial arts and exercise classes, Woodbridge 14 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - September 2018

Scouts, services for the elderly, local businesspeople and more. “Woodbridge is a thriving town, but when the youth club closed down last year it lost a huge part of its soul,” said Caroline Page. “A town is more than just a collection of houses and shops; it needs a space for the whole community - young, old and everyone in between. We’re dedicated to providing a facility for all, and we need the community’s help to turn the dream into reality. “Any donation to Jetty Lane is an investment in the future of the community for our young people, for artists, for groups and for workers too. Jetty Lane will leave a lasting legacy for future generations of all ages and backgrounds.” To learn more about Jetty Lane or to donate to the project, visit: https://www.jettylane.com/

Creamy Chicken Curry At the heart of every great community... is great food! This homemade version of a takeaway favourite is fantastic for a weeknight meal, taking on flavours of the traditional korma dish. Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely grated 1 garlic clove, finely grated 1 inch piece fresh ginger, finely grated 4 tbsp korma curry paste 4 skinless chicken breasts, each sliced into 5 pieces 50g ground almonds 50g sultanas 500ml chicken stock 200g basmati rice, to serve 100g frozen peas, defrosted 125g natural yogurt 6 spring onions, thinly sliced on the diagonal small bunch fresh coriander, leaves chopped 3 tbsp flaked almonds, toasted

Method Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add the onion, garlic and ginger and cook for 5 minutes or until softened. Stir in the curry paste and fry for 1-2 minutes, then add the chicken, ground almonds, sultanas and stock; season well. Bring to the boil, then simmer, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. Meanwhile, put the rice in a pan with 400ml cold water and a little seasoning. Bring to the boil, then cover and simmer for 8 minutes. Add the peas, cover again and continue cooking for 4 minutes or until the rice and peas are tender. Remove the chicken from the heat and stir in the yogurt. To serve, arrange the chicken and rice on 4 plates and scatter over the spring onion, coriander and flaked almonds.

BASIC LIFE

Charity

A regular update from a brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support Phew – at the time of writing it’s been a bit of a scorcher with record temperatures and everybody trying to find ways to cool down! Maybe it’ll be chilly by the time you read this but, if so, there’s plenty to keep you entertained in Felixstowe as autumn approaches. Mayor’s Charity We’re very proud to have been selected as one of the Mayor’s charities for this year with our friends from The Layden’s Community Café. One date for your diaries is Friday 7th September which promises to be a very entertaining night. The event, starting at 7pm at the Orwell Hotel will include a fashion show using clothes donated to BASIC and, yes modelled by BASIC and Layden’s staff! We’ll also have a raffle and some stalls with fantastic items available to buy. Tickets are just £5 and are available from both BASIC shops, The Laydens and The Town Hall. We suspect it’ll be best to get those tickets early as the demand is likely to be high. Pop-Up Shops From a tiny seed of an idea three years ago our pop-up shop idea has really blossomed and we’re so grateful for the support of St.John’s church, St.Marys Walton and 18 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - September 2018

Trimley Free Church who allow us to use their buildings each week. The latest news is that it’s extremely likely that a fourth pop-up will soon be up and running in Felixstowe. We wanted to make sure that at least one shop per week is accessible to residents who may not have access to transport. Of course, the pop-ups are also a great place to make new friends and to keep in touch with your community. It’s great to have witnessed so many new friendships develop from them. Watch this space for details! In addition, we’re now signed up as charity partners with Waitrose in Ipswich! We feel we’re making great strides in championing the use of food destined for destruction and Waitrose are the latest to join us along with Tesco, Morrisons, Lidl, Marks and Spencer and more! We’re determined to ensure that excellent food is made available to all members of the community without unnecessary restrictions. There is more than enough food produced to feed everybody and, to us, it’s just a matter of matching the excess with the need. Have a great September!

town and around FELIXSTOWE

Well dear readers, this is my final missive to you. I have decided after many, many years of writing for various magazines – mainly the Town Crier – that the time has come to say “farewell”. In this age of social media and instantaneous news and comment, the news that I impart is, in the main retrospective, although given from my personal view. I know that many of you have enjoyed reading what I have written and have appreciated my efforts at imparting news and I shall still be available on the end of the phone or email to answer any queries any of you might have regarding current affairs in the town. The big item at the moment is the draft Local Plan that Suffolk Coastal has out for consultation. I would urge anyone who is interested to respond to this consultation with your views. Local councillors, including myself, will be keeping a watchful eye on this document and feeding in their views via the Town Council as well as individually. With the amazing weather we are experiencing (too hot for me sometimes) – and the thousands of visitors to the town the problem of food and other litter is causing a huge headache for the waste services team at Norse. The problem of rats has arisen and the following are some of the steps that have been taken to deal with them: Norse have cut back vegetation where rodents can harbour, laid bait traps along Sea Road which are checked and re-set regularly by the pest control officers and bins are being emptied every day with some being emptied 2-3 times daily.

A final update from Felixstowe’s town councillor, Doreen Savage The main culprits are the people who discard food waste inappropriately, even though there are ample bins provided. Were you part of the audience at the wonderful open air concert that was the prelude to Carnival this year? I was, and like everyone who was there got absolutely soaked to the skin! I have never experienced a storm like the one that broke that evening and so suddenly – and driving home was the scariest experience with every road being flooded with water. Such a shame for the Carnival organisers that such a great evening was ruined by the much-awaited rain and similarly on the Sunday when the events had to be cancelled because of the weather. So much work and planning goes into an event like Carnival – and we can only thank all concerned for their dedication. Well that really is it! I have enjoyed being able to impart news and information to you over the years and as I have said already, if you need help with anything, I am available through the usual channels. Take care of yourselves and our wonderful town. Doreen Savage. On behalf of all the team at The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine, thank you Doreen, for all your efforts and writing for us the past 3 years. We wish you the very best! LOCAL PERSON

Chris Mapey Tell our readers a little bit about yourself, where you’re from and how you ended up in Woodbridge. I’m lucky enough to have been born near Woodbridge, in the Phyllis Memorial Maternity home in Melton. I went to school in the town, and have spent most of my life here. I left Woodbridge to study in London, returning in the late 1990’s. I’ve always been interested in photography, (I still have the first Polaroid I took, on Christmas Day 1979!) and the first camera I used (my fathers old Zeiss Contessa) I still have and use occasionally. Photography has always been a hobby, and it’s only recently in the past decade that I have decided to increase my knowledge and skills by undertaking some formal training. I enrolled for a full-time degree course at the University of Ipswich in 2013 and I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Photography in 2016, and now am undertaking an MA, 22 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - September 2018

also in Photography, via online distance learning at Falmouth University. I am lucky enough to have had work shortlisted and presented by the Royal Photographic Society as part of their International Print Exhibition, work exhibited in London as part of ‘PhotoMonth’, and more recently I enjoyed seeing some of my work selected for the #ibelong series at this years PhotoEast, as well as winning an award in the 2018 Ipswich Ginnel FotoFest. Living in Woodbridge, on the East Coast of Suffolk, is a real benefit for a photographer; the skies, landscape and the light here are superb, and have attracted artists for centuries. I feel drawn to the North Sea, and have generated many works pointing my camera out towards the horizon; most likely trying to find some moment of peace and tranquility in an otherwise hectic day! What sort of photography do you do (genre/style)? I now class myself as an ‘art photographer’ generating work based in series around a

topic that interests me. I’m currently working on a project that has me documenting all the WWII runways across Suffolk - this project I started on the 70th anniversary of VE day, and I hope to have it completed by the 75th Anniversary of D-Day (6th June next year).

across the breakwater as well as point your camera across the Felixstowe coast towards the docks. In Woodbridge I find being near the river very therapeutic, and can often be found near Kyson Point when time allows.

I love shooting landscapes, but have recently rediscovered a love of shooting people and portraits, so that’s forming a larger part of my current work.

Where can people buy your images?

What do you consider inspires you most about the local area? The landscape, the light and the people. There are some stunningly talented creative folk in this area, and hopefully I’m planning to work with a few of them moving forward. The draw of the North Sea coast is always irresistible to me, so I fully expect to create more work based on our coast. Is there any spot in Woodbridge or Felixstowe you would consider your favourite?

I’m looking to sort a gallery show for later in 2018. At present, have a look at my website and get in touch if there’s anything that appeals. I always have a selection of framed works on the wall of my pub (The Angel in Woodbridge). Where can they find out more/social media links? My website is www.mapey.com. I’m on Facebook at Facebook.com/ APictureOfSuffolk Instagram is @chrismapey

FELIXSTOWE

remembers A beautiful homage to those that fought for our country The Royal British Legion (Felixstowe Branch), in conjunction with Felixstowe Town Council, has installed two ‘Tommy’ silhouettes to begin the town’s centenary commemoration of the end of the 1914-1918 First World War. The figures, part of a series called ‘There But Not There’ represent the 888,246 British and Commonwealth service personnel who lost their lives as a result of the conflict. The installation has been supported by the Armed Forces Weekend Legacy Grant Fund, made possible by contributions from Suffolk Coastal District Council and others who contributed to the 2017 Suffolk Armed Forces Weekend event. One silhouette is in the Town Hall Gardens, opposite the War Memorial, with the other having been placed at the Triangle in Felixstowe town centre prior to being moved to watch over the War Graves at Felixstowe Cemetery from November. This year, a number of events are planned to mark the centenary of the end of WWI. In August, representatives from the Felixstowe Branch of The Royal British Legion joined thousands on a pilgrimage of Remembrance to Ypres to lay a wreath from the town at the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing.

Armistice Day, 11th November 2018 falls on Remembrance Sunday and, in addition to the Civic Remembrance service, the town will be paying a special tribute this centenary year at Felixstowe War Memorial from 6pm-7pm that evening. Volunteers are being sought to represent each of the 163 First World War servicemen named on the War Memorial before a beacon is lit at 7pm, joining a chain of 1,000 beacons around the UK and beyond to mark ‘Battles Over’. Anyone who wishes to volunteer for the event should contact felixstoweremembers@gmail.com or visit the Felixstowe Remembers Facebook page to find out more. A poster listing all the events is also available on the Town Council’s website: www.felixstowe.gov.uk. Main image: Volunteers and representatives from the Royal British Legion (Felixstowe Branch) and Felixstowe Town Council welcome Tommy to the Town Hall Gardens. Inset: Tommy and War Memorial.

On 27th October the town centre will host the launch of the Poppy Appeal in the lead up to local Remembrance events in November. September 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 29

When the parade passes by... Random ramblings by our local lad Every year I thoroughly look forward to Carnival season. Whatever size, from the tiniest village fete to the largest of processions. We’re incredibly fortunate here in Felixstowe of course as we enjoy a real weekend long treat when it comes to our Carnival; providing mother nature doesn’t decide to water the crops on the same three days that is! And as with any festival or party, folk tend to put any reservations they may have behind them and really go for it. I enjoy watching the young dads who line the procession route. Why? Well, have you ever watched the single and unmarried ladies at the wedding when the bouquet is thrown? You the know the ones. They’re usual mild and meek, possibly librarians. They’ll always step aside to let you by. They will hold both your hands and give you gentle advice in your less joyful moments and to top off their unequalled kindness, they’ll recommend Avon’s Skin So Soft for your working hands. Yet, when they’re in the group of singleton ladies at a wedding they transform into someone akin to Jonny Wilkinson. In a tone of voice never used before in their lives, a bit like Regan at her peak in the Exorcist, they yell: “That handtied cascade of pansies and freesias... IS MINE!”. As the bouquet is lobbed by the bride, her elbows will be extended to barge any contender out of the way, her skirt will be tucked in her knicker-legs, Brantano faux leather sling-backs kicked off and she’s in there before she springs four feet in the air to catch the floral spray. Well that’s what the dads are like when someone from a Carnival float flings out a Haribo MAOM chew. They spy Burt (72 years old and dressed as Cher) standing on the beautifully dressed lorry trailer and they lock eyes. Burt’s hand is in the bag of

sugar-based goodies and the young dad is determined this one’s for his boy (aged 7 and ¾). He watches it as it’s propelled towards the crowd, he runs and before his missus can shout, “Not the red ones as they’ll make him hyperactive,” he’s on his knees sliding through the legs of those in the horde of revellers to emerge on the curb side. He reaches up and shouts in pure elation: “Get in!” as he grabs the fruit flavoured morsel for little Heston. My ultimate favourite has to be, however, the mobility scooter owners who put in as much effort as the float participants. Clearly, one year an old fella considered his to resemble the Pope mobile (it was one of those covered ones) as inside he was dressed as His Holiness Pope Francis and swinging incense, with a very convincing model of The Vatican as an adornment hanging off the back. But the winner for me has got to be the old lady who wrapped hers in cut-outs of New York City skyscrapers and dressed herself as Superman. She had stuffed blue tights sticking out the back giving the impression she was flying. Now that’s the spirit! Before I sign off, please join me in thanking the Felixstowe Carnival! Brilliant job as always! Dean Wales September 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 33

September is the ninth month and the only month with the same number of letters in its name in English as the number of the month. In 1752 in Britain, September had only 19 days as we changed from Julian to Gregorian calendar. The last day of September in any year always falls on a different day of the week from the last day of any other month. “My favourite poem is the one that starts ‘Thirty days hath September’ because it actually tells you something” (Groucho Marx). At least six films have had the title ‘September’, which is more than any other month.
