BOOK REVIEW BY SUSAN BALDANI Reviewing a new book, The Sunshine Sisters by Jane Green Relationships between mothers, daughters and sisters can be beautiful, but they can also be fraught with tension. When unexpected changes occur that upset the status quo, a lot of drama can unfold. “The Sunshine Sisters,” a novel by Jane Green, explores the intricacy of family relationships and why sometimes the people we love the most are the ones who can cause the greatest pain. It’s a fact that we can choose our friends, but family is what we are given. Ronni Sunshine is a mother, but first and foremost, she is a movie star. But it’s her daughters that steal the show in this story. There’s Nell, who is the oldest and the strong, quiet one; Meredith, the middle child who suffers from low self-esteem and turns to food for comfort; and Lizzy, the youngest, who can sweet talk just about anyone into doing whatever it is she wants. They all suffered the heartbreak of growing up with a mother who was too busy with her career to give them the love and guidance they all desperately needed, and a father who decided to leave rather than deal with it all. They all coped in different ways: Nell by bottling up her feelings, Meredith by moving far away, and Lizzy by doing whatever made her feel alive, never mind the consequences. In turn, the sisters have drifted apart over the years, in more ways than just miles. Now, Ronni is dying, and her last wish it to have all her daughters with her as the end nears. She wants to try to mend their relationships, and to strengthen the bond between her daughters so they will have family to lean on once she is gone. Will they come, and will they find their way 4

back to each other? Is it possible to forgive and forget the hurt that has been inflicted over and over again, creating long-lasting scars? Number one NY Times bestselling author Jane Green brings us all the joys and heartbreaks of a family struggling to find a connection. She’ll take you to New York City, London, and Westport, Connecticut, where the final outcome will take place. This is a story that many parents and children will be able to relate to, and one can’t help but cheer them on, and to hope that they find the happiness and peace they all deserve. Jane Green is a former journalist in the UK and a graduate of the International Culinary Center in New York. “The Sunshine Sisters,” released in May 2018, is her 19th novel. Susan Baldani has an MA in Education and a BA in Psychology. She enjoys writing and in addition to writing articles about small town life, is currently working on her second book. You can contact her at: suebaldani@yahoo.com, on Twitter @mywritingwall, or through her website at www.mywritingwall.com.

THE SPA PAVILION Echoes of Prince, The Kinks, and Pink Floyd The month of June starts off by taking you right back to the golden era of pop with Lipstick on your Collar on Saturday 9th from 7.30pm. Next up is A History of Swing on Friday 15th June, a matinee performance from 2.15pm, with a nostalgic musical trip through the heyday of Big Band Swing. Marc Anthony joins the Spa also in June – on the 16th he’s billed as the world’s best Prince tribute - not only sounding like the former pop mega star, but looking remarkably like him too! An appearance by Strictly’s gorgeous finalist Giovanni Pernice will certainly hot things up on Wednesday 20th at 7.30pm with limited tickets available for his brand new tour Born to Win then on Friday 29th June the rather excellent CBM Theatre Company bring Footloose the musical to the Spa’s stage on Thursday 28th June at 7.30, with a matinee performance also on Saturday 30th and a final evening performance that night too giving you three chances to sing along to your favourite numbers from the hit film. Next month just to give you a flavour, Fleetingwood Mac set things moving on Saturday 7th July closely followed by the Kast-off Kinks on Friday 13th. The live music doesn’t end there the following night the stage is once again alight with UK Pink Floyd Experience (Saturday 14th). Last year the sensational Navi: King of Pop and his incredible Michael Jackson tribute show saw a packed house and the Spa hope his return on Tuesday 24th will have the same effect. He would definitely be our one to watch for the sizzling month of July. Finally what would a seafront theatre be without a Seaside Special? The Great British Seaside Special Variety Show which features popular acts Andy Leach and Ian Larkin to name just two, returns on Thursday 2nd August and early booking is advised. As you can see there’s plenty at the Spa this summer to keep you entertained. 6

The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - June 2018

The Spa’s regular ‘Dine & Dance’ nights are proving popular too with delicious dishes and live entertainment. Friday 22nd June - Shane’s Rock n’ Roll Show (Shane from ‘Shane & the Korrados’) and Saturday 21st July - Laura Nicole will be entertaining the guests with her vocal talents featuring tunes from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Enjoy a set menu or choose from the regular menu or just pop in for a drink – last entry 10pm. To make a booking call 01394 336336. Tickets for all shows are available from the Spa Pavilion’s box office which is open from 11am – 4pm 01394 284962. You can also reserve your seats on line, 24 hours a day, at www.felixstowespa.co.uk. Both of the bar restaurants are open every day from 9.30am to 5pm and two hours before performances for pre-show dining. You can also follow the Spa Pavilion on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news and show updates.

THE RIVERSIDE THEATRE The Riverside Musical Theatre Company presents “Showstoppers” The Riverside Musical Theatre Company (formally known as the R100 Choir) are back performing at The Riverside Theatre on Saturday 23rd June to light up the stage with ‘Showstoppers’, a show full of songs from the world of musical theatre. Featuring favourites from “Phantom of the Opera,” “Oliver,” “The Greatest Showman,” “Me and my Girl” and “We Will Rock You.” A section of the show is dedicated to the wonderful classics of Rodgers and Hammerstein, another to the late, great, Frank Sinatra and back by popular demand more from Les Miserables. With some wellknown Disney tunes thrown in the mix, there really is a song for everyone! Through their concerts the company has raised a considerable amount of money for local charities and organisations and in the past two years have raised £5000.00 in support of The Friends of St Mary’s Church, Woodbridge, £1020.00 for Heartbeat (Ipswich), and as a supporting act for the annual ‘Brass on The Grass’ Concert at Bredfield raising £2,300.00 for the Samaritans.

The company’s chosen charity for all of their performances this year will be the Jetty Lane Project, Woodbridge’s proposed new community centre for youth and arts. Stuart Saunders, owner of The Riverside Theatre says, “I’m privileged to have Mike Warden overseeing The Riverside Musical Theatre Company (RMTC) and can’t wait to see the show myself. The Riverside itself is a unique venue, in that many of the performers now singing with RMTC have worked at the venue either selling ice-cream or working in the restaurant before going on to perform in musicals in the West End. I was lucky enough to meet Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber when he dined at the restaurant and looked round the theatre commenting ‘Bravo Stuart, Bravo !’ and am delighted that RMTC will be singing a medley of songs from one of his most popular musicals – Phantom of the Opera.” Always thinking about future musical productions, the RMTC are looking for additional male voices, bass, tenor and baritone. If you are interested please contact Mike Warden on 01394 384587 or via their Facebook page, The Riverside Musical Theatre Company Woodbridge. Tickets are £12.50 for matinee and evening show available from The Riverside Box Office 01394 382174 or online at: www.theriverside.co.uk Don’t miss this incredible show, it really is a Showstopper! UPCOMING EVENT LANDGUARD FORT Celebrate the Royal Marines first land battle at Landguard Fort 1667 saw the last opposed invasion of England when the Dutch landed at Felixstowe. Their mission was to attack Harwich with their mighty naval fleet, but first they had to take Landguard Fort which guarded the entrance to the Harwich Haven. It was the forerunners of the Royal Marines that garrisoned the fort that day 351 years ago, commanded by Captain Darell, and the subsequent action was to become the Royal Marines first land battle. Every year the Royal Marines Association and Landguard Fort Trust commemorate the event at the Fort with displays, Living History and the opportunity to meet and chat to the veterans. This year the event will be held on Sunday the 24th June in the Fort starting at 10am and finishing at 4pm. Food, drink and refreshments will be available so visitors 12 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - June 2018

can stay all day to enjoy exploring the Fort, museum and Landguard, as well as watching the displays. Additional parking will be available at Landguard, or you can use Manor Terrace car park, which is free, and include a pleasant walk across the Nature Reserve to the fort in your day out. It has fantastic views of the port, fort and sea and is not too far. For more information on the fort please visit our website www.landguard.com where you can also see a film of last year’s 350th anniversary signature grand event. You can also find more information on Landguard at www.discoverlandguard.org.uk As an aside, although 1667 was the last opposed invasion when the Duke of York’s Maritime Regiment of Foot (Royal Marines) successfully defended Landguard Fort; in 1693 the Dutch Prince William of Orange was invited by the protestant English to invade with a Dutch army to depose the catholic King James II. This time the Dutch were successful, without a shot being fired! Funny how things turn out.

FELIXSTOWE’S NEW MAYOR Mayor of Felixstowe for 2018/19 elected At its Annual Meeting of 16th May, Felixstowe Town Council elected Councillor Graham Newman as the Mayor of Felixstowe for the Municipal Year 2018/19. On the same evening Cllr Tracey Green was appointed as the Deputy Mayor. On accepting the office of Mayor, Cllr Graham Newman, who has been Member of the Town Council since 2009, said: “I am humbled and privileged to have been elected by my fellow councillors to serve a second term as Mayor for this coming Civic Year, 2018/19. I am also delighted that my colleague Cllr Tracey Green - an established Town & District Councillor - has been elected Deputy Mayor. Having said that, I know I am stepping into huge boots left by my predecessor, Cllr Nick Barber, who has done a fantastic job over the past year - representing Felixstowe all over the county and beyond - and raising a huge amount of money for his three charities.

So yes, 2018/19 will be a different type of mayoral year but I hope one which consolidates and builds upon the many aspects of our town’s growing success. Equally I want to focus on supporting those who have yet to be touched by that success - for instance those facing the challenges daily such as loneliness and/or ‘where is the next £ coming from’. To that end, I will be supporting two charities that make it their business to help... The Laydens Community Café in Langley Avenue and The BASIC Life Charity. As we commemorate 100 years of cessation of World War 1’s hostilities, there will be an intensive programme of events in the town over the fortnight leading up to Remembrance Sunday. Many of these activities will be facilitated by the Town Council itself, so watch out for further details over the next few months. Added to that, we have a growing programme of events throughout the summer season for the whole town to enjoy as hopefully we welcome thousands of visitors.” If you would like the Mayor to attend a function in Felixstowe, or to simply ask him a question, please contact mayor@felixstowe.gov.uk 13

TIMINOLOGY An update from Tim’s book launch Local author Tim Leach – who was brought up near Woodbridge and attended Framlingham College – held a launch party for his book Timinology on the evening of Saturday 31st March at The Aldeburgh Bookshop. It was an event packed with Tim’s family and friends, as well as local well-wishers, all eager to find out more about his first book, which explains how Tim has developed the tools to lead a happy life. Timinology is part biography and part self-help book in which Tim uses his own life experiences to offer tools to others. Tim tracks his life from his school days – when his prime focus was to have fun and secure a job which paid lots of money – through a freak skiing accident which almost killed him, to today, where he has recently set up as a life coach. The book also covers Tim’s introduction to meditation which has now become a huge part of his life – which came during a dating course. That day he was also introduced to the fact that he wouldn’t be able to find true love until he discovered how to love himself. Tim now says: “I’ve hit rock bottom both mentally and physically before and, if the depressed guy that I used to be can now see the potential beauty in everyone and everything, you’ve got a pretty strong chance of reaching your goals with an affirmed, enlightened, real-life case study by your side, who believes wholeheartedly in you.” Tim is now offering a life consultancy service and runs eight-week mindfulness courses. WOODBRIDGE INVENTOR CREATES RECYCLABLE COFFEE CUP

Martin Myerscough’s invention helps to bring a solution to a global problem There has been no shortage of news regarding disposable coffee cups of late. 2.5 billion coffee cups are binned in the UK each year, 99.7% of which are not recycled as they are made of a combination of card and plastic laminate that is fused together and very difficult to separate. Recent TV programs, including BBC’s Blue Planet II, have highlighted the destruction that our disposable plastic is causing to the environment, with naturalist Sir David Attenborough

drawing everyone’s attention to the fact that we need to change our habits of using ‘functionless’ plastic. Martin Myerscough, from our very own Woodbridge, hopes that his solution ‘Frugal Cups’ will provide a solution to the problem, allowing his cups to be recycled using existing systems. Martin’s cup is made from recycled cardboard with a thin layer of plastic that can easily be separated from the inside, meaning that it can be recycled at any plant, rather than just the few specialists. Frugalpac, the Ipswich-based company, are doing their bit to help the environment and have been featured on the BBC and represented at Parliament. If you have a business that you believe could benefit from Frugal Cups, or wish to find out more, visit: https://www.frugalpac.com/frugal-cup/ June 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 17

FELIXSTOWE TOWN AND AROUND At the time of writing the bank holiday has just passed and was spent gardening - it is a relief to sit at my laptop ready to write this month’s offering for The Felixstowe and Woodbridge Magazine! What an amazing weekend it was with everything needed to make a visit to the seaside a “must” and people did in their thousands! Felixstowe was packed from early morning through to late evening with visitors and residents out enjoying all there was to offer and that included The Historic Vehicles Run which again saw hundreds of beautiful old cars lining the promenade to be admired and to bring back fond memories for many people! Felixstowe Rotary also staged the annual fun run on Bank Holiday Monday and as always this was another major success with hundreds of people running to raise money for charity. And the sun shone out of a cloudless sky all weekend! The Suffolk Coastal garden waste scheme is now up and running and at the end of April some 20,240 households had signed up to having their brown bins emptied. This equates to 20,558 bins with the aim of getting 50% of households to join the scheme. Those of you who, like me, have signed up to the scheme will have received the sticker that identifies that you have paid to have your bin emptied and this helps the refuse crews to distinguish between those who have paid and those who haven’t! Apparently on the first week of the scheme bins were out for collection that did not have stickers and were emptied as a goodwill gesture, but this will not continue. So, if you haven’t already and you have as much garden waste as me – signing up is a good option. I was invited to visit the new Community Café set up in the River of Life Church in Langer Road. The café that was in Hamilton Road closed down some time

Update from Felixstowe’s town councillor ago and this new venture in the entrance to the building is to some extent a replacement of that facility. The café is light, airy, colourful and welcoming and is open on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of each week from 10am-3pm. There is a menu of light bite style food and the coffee is excellent! Worth a visit as everyone is welcome. I was really pleased to hear that the Men’s Sheds venture that opened a few months ago at The Cabin in the grounds of Sanctuary Housing in Langley Avenue is proving to be a great success with more members joining all the time. Man’s Sheds provide sharing of skills, friendship and lots of laughter I am told! There is a website if you are interested! Following the storms we had earlier in the year some 63 beach huts have been standing on the promenade because beach levels have eroded and it is not safe to return the huts to their original sites. SCDC have written to all the affected hut owners having listened to their views and concerns suggesting that as a short term solution the huts be positioned on the two grassed areas beyond the Pier that have the Trim Trail and volley ball net on them at the moment. Not an ideal solution I know, but I understand the need to free up the promenade for the summer and work is continuing to develop some longer term options for the future siting of the affected huts and hut owners are being kept up to date with what is happening. IN THE

garden

Our gardens can be a constant reward if we tend them throughout the year. There’s no shortage of work from pruning, weeding, tidying or sowing, so here are some top tips for what you can do on those sunny June afternoons, whether you’ve a flower bed, a vegetable patch or hanging baskets.

Now that the risk of frost has passed you can plant out annual summer bedding plants as well as planting up your containers or hanging baskets. Plants growing in greenhouses can be moved out and plants that are ready to be moved outdoors from in the house can be put in their final position. Any newly planted trees, shrubs and flowers should be kept well-watered during dry periods to help them establish. If you’re thinking of sowing, you can look at biennials that will come out next year, but there are also some annual plants that can be sowed even in June, 22 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - June 2018

including: Calendula, Larkspur, Nasturtiums and Sunflowers. If you’ve got a veggie patch there are plenty of vegetables that can be directly sown outdoors, provided they are wellprotected from nasties, such as: beetroot, broccoli, carrots, fast-growing herbs like coriander, dill and parsley, salad leaves, swede, sweetcorn and turnips. Pinch/dead-head Sweet peas, repeatflowering roses, geraniums and poppies which will encourage more flowering. If you’ve been growing climbers be sure to stake or secure them to a trellis (this goes for any tall plants that haven’t finished flowering yet), to get the most out of them. Have a wonderful June in your garden!

Suffolk Open Studios Suffolk Open Studios celebrates the county’s thriving artistic community with participating artists opening their studios to the public at weekends, giving visitors a unique opportunity to take a look “behind the scenes” and see them in action. For 2018, the programme runs over the first 4 weekends of June, commencing Saturday 2nd June. Over 100 artists and galleries are taking part, showing work across a wide range of media covering every aspect of art today, including painting, ceramics, glassware, pottery, sculpture and more. Suffolk Open Studios Chairperson Cally James commented, “This year’s programme promises to be one of the most exciting yet. We’re expanding and diversifying the Open Studios concept but keeping the intimacy that visitors like, of being able to see and ask about artists’ work within their own studios.” “With such a broad range of artists and galleries showing work across the entire visual art spectrum, there’s no better way to see and understand the state of art practice in Suffolk today.” Felixstowe Trail For your delight, Felixstowe Art Trail 2018 offers you glass art, ceramics, pine needle weaving and mixed media painting and photography. You will be welcome to chat to the artists about their work and explore their studios with pieces on display. There will be some demonstrations for you to see during your visit. There are plenty of places for refreshment as you travel along the trail and car parking at or near to the artists’ studios. We look forward to welcoming you.

Newson, who has a shop and studio in Leiston, is mentored by another Suffolk artist, the highly acclaimed Maggi Hambling, who will open the show at an invitation only private view on 8th June. The New Beginnings exhibition will feature a range of work by the artist who will donate 20% of the proceeds from sales to the Friends of St Mary’s and Marie Curie. Maggi Hambling, who has supported and encouraged Newson for a number of years, has likened his art to that of the artist Francis Bacon. ‘There is in the same way a kind of raw urgency in his work’, she says. FRUIT SORBET At the heart of every great community... is great food! This recipe is a serious crowd-pleaser. It has fruit to help you reach your five a day, it’s dairy, gluten and refined-sugar free, plus it’s almost too simple to make and tastes delicious. Sorbet has long been a pallet cleanser to enjoy before meals, but is also wonderful as an afternoon treat on a hot day, or dessert. This recipe requires a small amount of preparation, so whenever you see reduced fruit in the supermarket or grocer’s you can buy it and freeze it for later!

Method: Wash the summer fruits - we’ve opted for strawberries, blueberries and raspberries for ours, but you can add anything you like. Pat dry, chop up the strawberries into quarters, break the banana into loose chunks and place all the fruit in a freezer bag or tupperware. Freeze for minimally 2 hours or until required. When you are ready to make your sorbet place the fruit and lemon juice in a food processor and add the apple juice. TIP: When blending the ingredients together be sure to use the processor in small bursts, as otherwise the blades will heat up and melt the frozen fruit too quickly. Once all of the fruit is blended together, scoop up and serve!

Serves 4 Ingredients: 500g mixed summer fruits 1x ripe banana Juice of 1x lemon 100ml apple juice (to sweeten)

At the event the Mayor also announced that a total of £17,346 had been raised in support of his three chosen charities: Felixstowe Area Community Transport (FACTS); Level Two Youth Project and Felixstowe & Walton Football Club Each charity was presented with a cheque for £5,782 Felixstowe Town Mayor, Cllr Nick Barber, said, “It was great to see so many people attend our new style Annual Town Meeting at the Academy, incorporating the Civic Awards and the presentation of cheques to my chosen charities. Felixstowe has had a brilliant year. Without people like our Civic Award winners and all the nominees, the town would not be the wonderful place we know and love. My charities were thrilled with the total raised. I must once again thank everyone involved for their efforts and making it such a memorable time for me as your Mayor.” If you would like to nominate a Felixstowe resident for outstanding community service to the town of Felixstowe details of the Civic Awards for 2019 will be published on the Town Council website in due course. www.felixstowe.gov.uk

PARKRUN

Felixstowe’s latest way to keep fit! If you’ve been down the prom on a Saturday morning just recently you may have noticed a lot of activity with dozens of people running and walking their way up and down the seafront. This is parkrun, Felixstowe’s latest way of keeping fit, getting active and meeting new people and it’s totally free. Just register and print out your number at www.parkrun.co.uk/ felixstowe and come and join in. The parkruns are held across the UK and beyond, all organised by volunteers. Volunteering is a really friendly social aspect of parkrun and is at the heart of the parkrun ethos. The course is 5km and can be tackled at your own speed - we have sprinters, walkers, old people, young people, kids (under 11s must be accompanied) and dogs all joining in. It’s not a race, more of a timed run so no one needs to feel they can’t do it. Most towns in the UK have a parkrun, Ipswich has two if you count Kesgrave, and a lot of people had been driving there from Felixstowe every week. Now local people can just nip down to the prom. At our first event we had 443 runners and walkers and to my relief numbers

have stayed healthy at around 300 which shows that there really is a demand. Although the event is free to all participants there were a few start-up costs which were met by The Rotary Club of Felixstowe and Suffolk County Council’s most active county program, with an additional top-up grant from Felixstowe Town Council. This funding was then matched by parkrun who supplied all the equipment that we need (stopwatches, flags, cones, laptop) and supported me through the set-up process to help it become the well oiled-machine it is today! I have been amazed and moved by the people who have turned up at parkrun. The look of determination on peoples faces as they cross that finish line has moved me to tears on more than one occasion; it is a joy to see. I am sure over time we will see people going from walking some of the way to running all the way and doing it faster and faster. Please come and join us either as a runner or as a volunteer, or both! It starts around the back of the leisure centre - we have a briefing for first timers just before 9am each Saturday. Every Saturday at 9am. Felixstowe Prom (meet at the Pier). To register for this 5km timed run, register online. Free entry. www.parkrun.org/felixstowe Sarah Fitch - Event Director June 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 29

A HOSPITAL HOOT! Random ramblings by our local lad I suppose I better begin by pointing out that I have enormous respect for the NHS and for everybody who works in it; my niece is a nurse and I’m so very proud of her choice of career. However, following a little time recently popping backwards and forwards to the local hospital I realised what amusing places they also are. People inadvertently do the funniest things. Let’s start with a slightly sensitive issue. The ‘specimen’ – now, my 81-year-old mum would mouth that word without actually saying it, the same way she would with the words bottom, pass-wind and gullgroper (you’re going to look that last one up aren’t you?). There comes a time in everyone’s life when we are asked to part with a… erm… number 1 for testing. Clinical staff have no issues with this but have you ever watched anyone who has been asked for a ‘s.p.e.c.i.m.e.n’ {mouthed not spoken}? Firstly there’s shock then total and utter embarrassment. Then comes the realisation of how small the top of the vessel is. This is comical enough but it’s the methods folk concoct in giving it back without it being seen that makes me chuckle. There’s the ‘keep it in the pocket until asked for it’ method but however great it is as a hand warmer on chillier days, there’s always the risk of the top not being screwed down well enough. There’s the ‘peering round the lav door for the nurse’ technique but that’s not great if there’s a queue forming and the nurse has gone walk about. But I learned that the ‘wrap the phial in enough toilet paper to disguise what it is’ system is the favourite. Although those I witnessed were taken from the patient and instantly unwrapped in full view apart from the one that resembled an origami

penguin that was placed on the tea trolley as decoration and the patient was asked to squeeze another one out. Then there’s those in A&E. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trivialising what they’ve been rushed in for but boy, some of the people really ought to have changed before arriving. Although not wanting to be seen dead in it in public myself, there was the obligatory pyjama bottom / animal foot slippers / Norwich City Football Club top combo. Take the Norwich City top out the equation then of course I don’t see anything offensive about that at all unless he was just going in for a splinter. Moreover there’s always the lad who has hurt himself whilst out on a stag do. So inevitably you’re going to have a Shaun as Donatello from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with a sprained wrist, a Luke as Mr Bean with a bumped head and a Vincent as Anne Widecombe with a liberal opinion; okay the last one was a bit farfetched. And finally what is it about injections. Okay I’m not keen on them but the rugby-player type hyperventilating at just the cotton wool ball dabbing bit was a surprise the other day. Then there was the poor fella who I can only assume had just given blood for a test who passed out when he spotted the nurse who took it, sipping at a cranberry juice.
