The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - July 2018

Welcome to July Featured in this month’s issue are a few things you may not have heard about yet, like the fantastic Borrow Bags campaign and the brilliant new expansion to Martlesham’s RSPCA Animal Centre. I’m forever impressed by the work the volunteers do that breathe life into these projects and organisations. If you’re a family person like me, this month is just perfect - it’s finally carnival season and with plenty of fetes, fairs, festivals and extravaganzas I know you’ll be able to keep the little ones in your family busy and entertained. I wish you all a very warm and relaxing July and hope you get the opportunity to soak in the sun. Keep well!

BOOK REVIEW BY SUSAN BALDANI A review of Any Dream Will Do by Debbie Macomber People sometimes make bad choices, but this does not make them bad people who can’t atone for their mistakes and become productive members of society. This is the main message of “Any Dream Will Do.” Written by Debbie Macomber, who is known for her uplifting and sometimes spiritual books, this story is true to her style. Having lost her mother at a young age, and a father who was often drunk and violent before his death, Shay Benson is more like a parent than a sister to her little brother Caden. Though she tries her best to steer him away from trouble and make a better life for herself, he makes some bad decisions that not only affect his own life, but Shay’s as well. Trying to save him from disaster and possible death lands her behind bars for three years. She is released after serving her time, only to find that her struggles are only just beginning. As a convicted felon with little money and no place to call home, she is without hope and despairs of ever pulling herself out of the hole she has dug herself into. Luckily for Shay, she meets people who believe in her and show her the way to real freedom, where she is self-sufficient, confident and loved. In time, she obtains a job and her own apartment and also begins a healthy relationship. But when her past conspires against her, everything she has worked so hard for is threatened by the people who once brought her nothing but misery and destruction. Will Shay be able to survive and thrive, or will she lose herself and the life she has built all over again? “Any Dream Will Do,” published in 2017, shows the importance of perseverance 4

against all odds and how someone’s life can be turned around with a little help and a lot of luck. It illustrates the importance of giving people second chances while having faith that they will eventually make the right choices. Debbie Macomber, a New York Times bestselling author multiple times over, has more than 200 million copies of her books in print worldwide. Besides stand-alone books, she has written multiple series that usually take place in her home state of Washington in the U.S.A. Find out more about her and her books at: https://debbiemacomber.com/. Susan Baldani has an MA in Education and a BA in Psychology. She enjoys writing and in addition to writing articles about small town life, is currently working on her second book. suebaldani@yahoo.com, on Twitter @mywritingwall www.mywritingwall.com.

THE SPA PAVILION Hot, hot, hot entertainment for this summer at The Spa July is hotting up at the Spa starting off with the brilliant vocal performance of Fleetingwood Mac on Saturday 7th July from 7.30pm. This fresh young band bring across the live sound of Fleetwood Mac, with authentic guitar, keyboard, drums, a man on the bass and of course, those legendary vocals. They are closely followed by the Kast-off Kinks, on Friday 13th at 7.30pm and as they are all actual former members of The Kinks you can safely expect an authentic Kinks sound! The live music doesn’t end there however, the following night the stage is once again alight with the UK Pink Floyd Experience (Saturday 14th at 7.30pm). Tuesday 24th also at 7.30pm is an absolute must-see. Last year the sensational Navi: King of Pop and his incredible Michael Jackson tribute show saw a packed house. It could be due to the fact he’s just starred in a blockbuster film about the life of Michael Jackson which is due to be released here in the UK later on this year, or the fact he has 600,000 followers! Either way you’ll be glad you got to see him perform the most popular Michael Jackson mega songs. He would definitely be our one to watch for the sizzling month of July. Follow that! Well they are, in August with a traditional Seaside Special show suitable for the whole family. The Great British Seaside Special Variety Show, which features popular acts Andy Leach and Ian Larkin to name just two, returns on Thursday 2nd August at 2.30pm and early booking is advised. Friday 3rd features a hilarious comedy play written by Bobby Ball – The Dressing Room, closely followed on Saturday 4th with Thank You for the Music – an Abba Tribute night. Finally a 6

diary note for all Big O and Wilbury fans – the Roy Orbison and Travelling Wilburys Experience is coming to this seaside theatre on Friday 10th August, so as you can see there’s no let-up in the scorching entertainment at the Spa this summer. The Spa’s regular ‘Dine & Dance’ nights are proving popular too with delicious dishes and live entertainment. Saturday 21st July Laura Nicole will be entertaining the guests with her vocal talents featuring tunes from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Enjoy a set menu, choose from the regular menu or just pop in for a drink – last entry 10pm. To make a booking call 01394 336336. Tickets for all theatre shows are available from the Spa Pavilion’s box office which is open from 11am – 4pm on 01394 284962. You can also reserve your seats online, 24 hours a day, at www.felixstowespa. co.uk Both of the bar restaurants are open Sunday to Thursday from 9.30am to 6pm, from 9.30am to late on Fridays and Saturdays (last food orders at 9pm) and at least two hours before every performance. You can also follow the Spa Pavilion on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for all the latest news and show updates.

BORROW BAGS OF FELIXSTOWE Reducing bag waste in the community! Borrow Bags is a fantastic community group based in Felixstowe created with the aim to reduce the excessive use of plastic bags and plastic waste in the area. Borrow Bags are provided to local retailers for shoppers who don’t have a bag or need extra bags when they are out shopping. I’m sure we’re all familiar with the feeling of having left your reusable shopping bag at home when you’ve popped out for some groceries, or not having quite enough space in the one you’ve brought when there’s a bargain on at the local shop and you need to stock up without warning! Rather than having to buy a plastic bag in these instances, Borrow Bags can quite literally be 12 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - July 2018

borrowed and returned on your next visit, or when passing by one of the shops. And if any bags get a little dirty on their journey home with you, you are welcome to wash them before returning them. Completely run by volunteers, each bag is an upcycled product, the aim being to produce 200 bags before the summer of 2018 and officially launch the scheme across Felixstowe. Borrow Bags are also hoping to get youngsters involved in the scheme by helping to make and decorate bags too, aiming to encourage a more personal investment and care for the bags and creating an interest in where they go and and where they turn up. You can find out more about Borrow Bags and the shops that are already using them, or volunteer to make more by visiting their social media pages: facebook.com/pg/borrowbags

IMAGINE DANCE COMPANY Upcoming Summer dance camp If you have a son or daughter who is now a grown up then you’ll probably remember the “Apple Dance Company”, a well known, award winning dance group who performed at fetes, shows, pantomimes and loads more in and around the town. The Principal dance teacher Claire Fulcher was admired for her talents not only as a dancer but as a choreographer and a teacher, whilst her Mum, Sue Fulcher helped manage the group, although she was better known for her amazing dress and costume making. Sadly Claire had to move away due to work and family commitments, but a few years ago she began commuting back to Felixstowe, and has now relocated back here. With the help of her Mum and sister, Jane, she started a new dance group once again in Felixstowe. In a few short years “Imagine Dance Company” has swelled in numbers, many of the them being children of the former Apple dancers. Already Imagine Dance Company have stormed the dance competitions around Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk, returning with medals and trophies. Performing Ballet, Tap, Modern, National, Character, Song and Dance, Contemporary and own choreography categories. In June the troupe put on their production of “Peter Pan” at Felixstowe Academy where they sang, danced and narrated a captivating performance of the Disney favourite, giving it a modern and up-to-date feel. Imagine Dance Company have already performed at local fetes and open days and have supported local Charities such as the Mayor’s charities and Guide Dogs. Places are available for any child wanting to start, and we also have spaces available on our week long summer camp “princesses and villains” in August. For more Information please contact Jane Fulcher on 07791228092. 14 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - July 2018

RUSSIAN ‘OLIVYE’ POTATO SALAD

At the heart of every great community... is great food! Being both the Russian World Cup footie season and barbecue season, we thought this fantastic authentic Russian ‘Olivye’ potato salad was the way to go. Russian potato salad conventionally contains cocktail sausages or turkey meat, but we’ve gone for a simple ham option, although you are welcome to adapt it to your family’s tastes! To serve 4 as a side. Ingredients: • 4 medium potatoes, skin on (or salad potatoes of your choice) • 2 large eggs • 150g chopped cooked ham (or meat of your choice) • 3 large carrots, chopped • 100g garden peas • 1 sprig of spring onion, chopped • 1 handful of capers or dill pickles • parsley or dill to garnish • 150g mayonnaise • salt & pepper to taste

the heat and simmer until the potatoes are easily pierced with a knife, about 20 to 40 minutes depending on the size of the potatoes. Drain, transfer to a bowl, and allow to cool. They can be placed in the refrigerator to make sure they are cold enough by the time they are needed. While the potatoes are cooking, prepare the eggs by boiling for 2 minutes and then allowing to simmer for 10 minutes. Drain the hot water and cover in cold water until ready to be peeled. Place the chopped carrots in a small saucepan and cover with enough cold water to cover by 1 inch. Bring to a boil. Add the peas, lower the heat, and simmer until the carrots and peas are tender, about 3 minutes for frozen, 6 minutes for fresh peas. Drain and rinse with cold water immediately. Place the drained carrots, peas and spring onion, capers or pickles to a large bowl. Peel and chop the eggs into quarters adding these to the mix. Remove the potatoes from the fridge and chop them to the desired size. Add them along with the chopped ham, then bringing in the mayonnaise, salt and pepper. Toss gently until all of the ingredients are mixed. Garnish with dill or parsley and serve!

Method Place the potatoes (with their skins on) in a large pot. Cover with 2 inches of cold water, and bring to a boil. Reduce

BASIC LIFE CHARITY A regular update from a brilliant local charity, providing financial, practical and general support Mayor’s Charity Lots has been happening over the last month or so and we’re so happy to see our charity progressing. Firstly, we’re delighted to have been chosen as one of the new Mayor, Graham Newman’s, Charities for the year. This means we’ll be involved in many events over the next twelve months and we’re excited about working with Graham and his team. Watch this space for news of the events and the dates. Pop-Up Shops Our pop-up shops continue to be extremely popular and have been causing a great deal of interest in other towns. We’re hoping to expand over the next few months. During June we were delighted to have been selected by both Lidl and Marks and Spencer in Felixstowe to receive excess stock for redistribution. Their generosity coupled with that of Tesco, Morrisons and Fare Share will ensure that we are always stocked up each week. Borrow Bags Like most of the country (if not the world!), Felixstowe people are doing their best to cut down the use of plastic. 18 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - July 2018

At BASIC we’ve joined the excellent ‘Borrow Bags’ scheme which is run by local people. The idea is that, should you forget a bag when shopping, you can borrow a bag which has been made from products which are much friendlier to the environment and can be used over and over again. So, if you’re shopping and have forgotten your usual bag please ask for a borrow bag from our shop – or any other local shop which displays the Borrow Bag symbol. Finally, we’d like to thank you for your amazing continued support – it means the world to us! Have a great July!

FELIXSTOWE TOWN AND AROUND Some months when I start to write this article I find myself wondering what the topic will be. However, this month I find it has come to me without any thought necessary in the form of volunteering. This is a word we hear used daily in so many respects and let’s face it, without volunteers many of the organisations and groups of which we are aware would not operate without the work of the volunteer. My train of thought was started on the 5th June when I was asked to take part in an interview on volunteering. I met up with a group of staff members from Community Action Suffolk who are all involved with promoting and training volunteers and they were on a staff day out to do some volunteering themselves and to meet other volunteers in the town. The Mayor, Graham Newman, himself a volunteer at the TIC hut on the seafront, also joined the group and we had a chat with them before they departed to do some weeding and tidying up in the Spa Gardens in the morning, to be followed by a litter pick in the afternoon. Now that really is putting your money where your mouth is! A couple of days later I received a letter from the Felixstowe Volunteer Centre seeking some funding as the funding they had received from the County Council had ceased. Felixstowe Volunteer Centre was set up some 35 years ago with the express aim of introducing people in need of help to volunteers willing to give their time to help. The help needed can take many forms from befriending, shopping, family support, emergency gardening all things to help people continue independent living. The centre operates out of 108 Queens Road, Felixstowe and is open two days a week. The Centre has averaged over 900 jobs per annum.

Update from Felixstowe’s town councillor District councillors have a Community Enabling budget which they can use to support worthwhile causes and I hope that some of our local councillors will support the FVC. I certainly shall be doing so as I consider it imperative that people in need have somewhere they can go to seek help. A competition started last year for all town councillors to take part in Felixstowe in Flower. We were all provided with a 10” pot filled with compost (courtesy of the East of England Co-op) and had to plant it up ourselves. At the launch all the pots are on display and the public can vote for the one they prefer! As you can imagine the competition amongst councillors is always fierce – and the winner is usually cock-ahoop at winning! Last year all the pots were taken down to the Town Hall gardens and planted around the flag pole there and they made a wonderful display all through the Summer. Councillors are also planning to be on hand for a tea and cake event to celebrate Suffolk Day by having some tables and chairs outside the Town Hall and inviting anyone who wishes to have a cuppa and a slice of cake all served by them – free of charge! Just hope the weather will be kind so that lots of people can take advantage of this event. Isn’t the year going by quickly? Can’t believe we are half way through it already. Doreen Savage. SUFFOLK ARTIST LANE MATHIAS Inspired by the beauty of Suffolk landscape, here is a local artist to tell us her story I’m Lane Mathias, a Suffolk-based artist now living in Ipswich. After living in London for many years, working as a college lecturer, I made the move to Suffolk with my husband and two daughters sixteen years ago. It was the best decision as I’d returned to painting full-time having studied it at university many years ago. I’d heard about the beautiful Suffolk landscapes and big skies but it wasn’t until we visited my parents who were then living in Woodbridge that

22 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - July 2018

I realised the area had it all. Sumptuous countryside, a wonderful coastline, a great mix of architecture and yes, big skies! I knew that here, I would never be short of inspiration. When our elder daughter left home, we converted her bedroom into a studio and now I split my time between painting out and about ‘en plein air’ and working in the studio completing commissions, mainly of houses. I work in a variety of mediums, specialising in watercolour and pen and wash. I love the vibrancy of watercolour and the way one small, seemingly innocuous tube of paint is capable of so much depth and texture. Watercolour lends itself so well to painting in the great outdoors and last year I spent several weeks painting throughout Andalucia in Spain and Gibraltar. Watercolour is eminently portable. Back in the studio I also like to work with acrylic and collage. I love to paint local landmarks and I’m particularly interested in church architecture. Our area is abundant with wonderful churches!

My favourite spot to paint is Landguard Point. I’m a regular visitor who has passed many happy hours painting the cranes and container ships and drinking tea. The light there is amazing. I’m fascinated by the comings and goings of the ships and the movement of the blue cranes against that big Suffolk sky! I sell my work online through the Etsy website, but mainly through word of mouth. People are more than welcome to contact me via my website or my facebook or Instagram pages to discuss sales or commissions. I will also be part of a group exhibition at Great Glemham Church on 29th/30th September. THE CHANGING FACE OF FELIXSTOWE Anecdotes of Felixstowe, then and now, by Brian Blackmore As a child growing up in Ipswich my parents often brought me to Felixstowe for a day out, being that we weren’t too far from the railway station. In those days the trains were steam engines; the old ‘black 5’s’, with their bench-type seats, taking five on either side, no corridors and no loos! If one needed to ‘go’ they’d have to wait until they reached the next station, much to our dismay. Felixstowe town station was where the Coop is today and the train would come in and disconnect from its carriages, while another engine would hook in from the rear and finish the journey to the beach station before unloading and coming back. Sunday nights in the summer the queue for the train back to Ipswich would be from beach station up to the traffic lights and round the corner, almost to where the infant school is, more than half of those waiting for the train with their fish and chips in hand. The scenic railway was beautiful - on a clear day you could see ships miles out at sea. Back then you could find an RAF camp with sea planes at the docks end of the sea front. On one occasion I even witnessed a Spitfire landing, with a pair of giant water skis on it to help it float. It was quite a sight to behold. The opposite end held the pier, the men taking their fishing rods along there to fish for hours on end. Because food was on rationing until the early fifties and there were no supermarkets (although there was the good-old Co-op), fishing, keeping allotments and your own small livestock was quite common. We had our own chickens and one of my neighbours kept pigs. The ‘weekly food shop’ could take three hours, between the grocers, the butchers, bakers and so on. Quite a change from the online click-and-deliver systems that are available to us today.

Felixstowe was much smaller in those days there were no big housing estates like we have today, and only the rich could afford a car. Other than our family outings to the Sunday fair we’d play outside, kick the ball about, and only have to stop once or twice in an afternoon for cars. Interestingly, all the cars were painted black, other than military vehicles, which didn’t change until the late forties. Our only main road out of the town was the A45 which began here in Felixstowe and ended in Birmingham, which would take an all-day drive. You would pass through every village and town en-route, whereas today we can do that same run in a few hours. But despite all this Felixstowe hasn’t changed in spirit. It is still very much the quaint seaside resort that it has always been. Certainly we’ve lost the beach station and the bus depot has been replaced by a Lidl; the RAF has gone and only the old married quarters are left as evidence that they were ever there. The docks has become one of the biggest container ports in the UK and I hear that sixty percent of the working population is now connected with the port, whereas in my younger years it was the holiday trade, finding work wherever people could during the off-peak season. Thanks to the kindness and friendliness of the people, the low crime rate and the fact that folk come from all over to live here, Felixstowe is still a nice place to live without a doubt. Now if we could fix the potholes I think we’d be perfect! 27 July 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 29

DOGS DAYS ARE COMING! A thriving rescue centre for animals ready to house more of our four-legged friends Excitement is electric at the RSPCA Animal Centre at Martlesham as work starts on six replacement kennels that will help the centre continue its work in rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming all sorts of animals, especially dogs, from the local area. Dogs like Zeke who, with his siblings Alula, Mildred and Arlo were left orphaned at just 2 days old when their mother died. Natalie and Zoe, staff from the centre, became their foster mums, hand rearing the puppies with feeds every two hours – day and night! The lively bundles of mischief grew quickly and the centre had some fantastic families apply to adopt the little darlings. Zeke was 28

adopted by a family in Felixstowe and is thriving in their loving care. The new kennels will help staff and volunteers continue to care for all shapes and sizes of dogs. Dogs like Winston, after whom the £420,000+ rebuild is named. Jean Short, Honorary Chairman of the Branch says, “As half the new kennels will be bigger than normal, to provide better accommodation for bigger dogs, we’ve named the rebuild Project Winston after Winston, a sweet Newfoundland dog who came into the centre as a cruelty case. He finally found his forever home with a family that loved him dearly, so it seemed appropriate to put his name to a project that will help many more dogs find the thing they want most – a loving forever home.” In addition to replacing six of the animal centre’s oldest dog kennels with new, upto-date facilities, Project Winston will create a new support block to include a cattery

sluice room, and will refit the old staff room into a dog grooming room. Each local RSPCA branch is a separately registered charity and as such has to raise the money it needs to pay for its animal welfare work primarily through its own fundraising efforts. Jean says, “We have already raised over £300,000 in grants, donations and legacies for Project Winston, and we’re raising additional funds through activities, including collections, events, a sponsorship scheme and asking our supporters to organise fundraising events on our behalf.”

SUMMER MADNESS Random ramblings by our local lad We all love summer don’t we? Except, I suppose, purveyors of cardies, scarves and woolly gloves; I say diversify into knitted trunks! That’ll keep the coffers topped up during the warmer months. Actually, did knitted trunks ever exist? I am fortunate that I’ve never had to endure such apparel. I have, however, heard tales from ever so slightly older folk than I of skipping into the sea in their garter stitched swimming attire and watch the water level drop by a couple of inches as their gusset takes on 40 gallons of saline! As they retract from the ocean the backside of their trunks drag in the sand which, looking on the brighter side, is particularly handy if you’re thinking of digging a moat around your sandcastle. That aside, I have heard this balmy time of year referred to as the silly season and for good reason I reckon. Whether it’s the heat, the sun or just the care-free nature of people during the holidays or indeed a combination of all three, folk can go a little crazy. There’s the Strawberry Mivi gorging wasp batter for starters. ‘Leave it alone and it won’t bother you,’ I was told by my mother and I suspect they were too but no, that advice goes right out of the window if you’re enjoying a frozen morsel from Walls. There they are licking their fingers because the ice cream centre has started to melt quicker than the strawberry ice outer jacket and they hear it. That ominous low drone we all dread. The chav of the insect world has made its way in front to meet the aforementioned ice lolly gourmet eyeto-eye. It’s as if it’s saying: ‘Go on then if you think you’re hard enough’ as it comes at them from the sun like some fighter pilot. The Strawberry Mivi hits the prom

(now being enjoyed by a Jack Russel and a Greater Black Back Gull) as its previous owner screams, arms flailing like Mike Tyson’s. The only thing to do now… is run! It’s only at this point does gran pipe up and announce: ‘I don’t know what the fuss is all about, it’s only a hoverfly!’ Then there’s men. Lads, call them what you like. The moment the temperature reaches a rash-inducing 17 degrees, the vests, sliders, Ray Bans (more often than not ripped-off versions from Tenerife) and shorts are out. Really boys? One, it’s not hot enough and secondly have some dignity. I don’t mean you need to look like a geezer off Love Island to pull it off but consider this. Do your legs resemble white pipe-cleaners (usually with the odd zit and scabbed over scratch)? Do you have a black toenail or worse a fungal infection? And finally can you plait your armpit hair? If so linen slacks, boat shoes and a light shirt might be a better option. Then of course there are those who WILL have a barbecue whether the mercury has dropped to 12 degrees or not and old blighty experiences even for a couple of hours what it’s like to endure monsoon season. There’s nothing finer than witnessing that father of three trying to encourage his 4-year-old to down that soggy, limp Birds Eye burger that’s blacker than the charcoal itself. Sunday 15th July

Talk by James Henry @7.30pm Having written the bestselling prequels to the DI Frost novels of RD Wingfield, James has now embarked on his own police thriller series. ‘Yellowhammer’ is his second and, while set in Essex in the 1980s, the action also moves into the Suffolk countryside. James first visited us at Browsers a couple of years ago when he launched this series with ‘Blackwater’, a moody, atmospheric read that we all loved. It was this visit, and a later return for a talk at Hollesley for Suffolk Libraries, that inspired James to feature our corner of Suffolk in this new book. He will tell us all about this as well as his love of birdwatching and his other life working in publishing, in what will be a relaxed, fun and entertaining evening. Tickets are £8, available from Browsers Bookshop, 60 Thoroughfare, Woodbridge. 01394 388890.
