BOOK REVIEW BY SUSAN BALDANI A review of The She was Gone by Lisa Jewell One of the biggest fears of any parent is child abduction. In Lisa Jewell’s newest book. “Then She Was Gone,” we get to experience the heartbreak and devastation this crime can bring upon a family. Ellie Mack was a golden child: pretty, smart, loving and happy. One day, at the age of 15, she disappears on her way to the library. Her parents, Laurel and Paul, are frantic, convinced that she was taken, but the police are thinking that maybe she is just another runaway. No leads are found and no one reported seeing anything unusual that day, and pretty soon the case goes cold. As the years start to pass slowly with no sign of Ellie, sadness and frustration take their toll. Family relationships are frayed and eventually broken. Her parents and siblings drift apart, at times trying to forget and go on with their lives, but also hoping that one day Ellie will be found. Laurel may be the one who finds it the hardest to move forward; she does not want to let go of the fantasy that her daughter will return to her safe and sound. One day, a little girl comes into her life who so reminds her of her daughter. The more time she spends with her, the more convinced she is that young Poppy is almost a clone of her daughter. Other people start to notice it as well. But how could Poppy and Ellie be connected? After all, there has been no sign of her daughter for 10 years. Told from the viewpoint of each main character, the book explores the psychological turmoil that the victims and

their perpetrator experience. The pain is heartfelt, but then so is the reasoning of the kidnapper. You will get to know each character’s story and get a feel for who they are and what motivates them. Born and raised in north London, Lisa Jewell is the author of 12 bestselling novels. She lives in Swiss Cottage, a district in the London borough of Camden in England, with her husband and two daughters. To find out more about her and her other books, go to www.fantasticfiction.com/j/lisa-jewell/. Susan Baldani has an MA in Education and a BA in Psychology. She enjoys writing and in addition to writing articles about small town life, is currently working on her second book. It’s A Hattrick For The Riverside The awards just keep on coming! We received a letter from Swonderful Pictures Ltd which included some lovely “An American In Paris” ceramic coasters and key-rings, congratulating us on our fabulous box office sales for that particular event.

Eric Sedge is a Suffolk born singer/ songwriter who first appeared on the music scene as a member of the Broadside Boys. After two successful albums Eric went solo in 2017 supporting Richard Digance on his national tour and releasing his first solo album Pleased To Meet You. More recently, his song Kinder Shores is the title track of a compilation Folk album featuring Ralph McTell, Fairport Convention and Show of Hands, and he is the creator of the much-acclaimed folk musical To Look For America, Co-written with Richard Digance and Tom Leary of Feast of Fiddles and formerly Lindisfarne. In less than a year he has established himself as a highly regarded songwriter appearing at some of the country’s top festivals including Cropredy. We are delighted to be hosting Richard Digance, supported by Eric Sedge, on 28th September 2018.

BE A NAME IN OUR FRAME EACH looking for volunteers to put in the frame at Felixstowe A charity’s popular volunteer recruitment drive - that sees people add themselves to novelty frames such as the one pictured - has been relaunched after great success last year. Be a Name in our Frame aims to get people helping out at one of the 32 East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) shops across the region. EACH relies heavily on volunteers to run its shops, that collectively raise over £900,000 towards the vital care and support the good cause provides for children with lifethreatening conditions and their families. Last year EACH ran Be a Name in our Frame twice, in May and October, with 97 people signing up to help its shops. The charity’s shop in Felixstowe is specifically looking for: Treasure hunters to sift through donations and pick out high-value items for eBay. Mr or Ms Flexible! Individuals able to provide assistance at short notice. A friendly and welcoming face to operate the till on Saturdays, plus a sorting room assistant on Sundays. Peter Kingsley has been a volunteer since December 2015. He operates the till and helps sort bric-a-brac. He said: “Welcome to the madhouse! [This is the] best place to work in Felixstowe.” Hazel Dee, EACH Shop Manager, said: “We really appreciate the hard work of every single one of our volunteers, but we can always use more help to keep our shop running and I’m sure there are others like Peter.

For both families accessing care and those who have been bereaved, EACH is a lifeline at an unimaginably difficult time. The charity has to generate 84% of the money it needs to operate and relies on public support to continue its service.

“We find volunteering is a two-way process. Whilst as a charity we gain from the gift of their time, our volunteers make friends and learn new skills, too.”

To become a name in the EACH frame at Felixstowe, drop by or call Hazel on 01394 279224. For more information about EACH, go to www.each.org.uk. August 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 13

LAUNCH OF 2018’S FELIXSTOWE IN FLOWER

The buzz is in the air! Families flocked to Felixstowe town centre to see a special display created to celebrate the launch of the annual floral competition by Felixstowe Town Council. The event, which encourages Felixstowe residents to get green fingered over the summer, has opened its annual floral display competition that includes a special ‘tallest sunflower’ category. The East of England Co-op Funeral Services sponsors the community scheme and donated sunflower seeds and balloons, which were handed out by Guides and local volunteers dressed up as flower fairies and bumblebees at the event. Sunflower seeds, plant pots and grow bags have also been donated by the East of England Co-op to nurseries and schools involved in the scheme. Officially opened by the Mayor of Felixstowe, Cllr Graham Newman, the event included relaxing music organised by Fresh Gold Radio and a bake sale organised by the Guides for local residents to enjoy as they viewed the floral displays in the town centre. Tanya Carlton-Smith from East of England Co-op Funeral Services, has been judging the nursery and primary school displays in 14 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - August 2018

Felixstowe in Flower for the past four years. She commented: “For over 30 years Felixstowe in Flower has helped bolster community spirit locally, particularly in our schools, and we are very proud to support a scheme that gets children interested in gardening.” Cllr Graham commented: “Every summer since 1985, the Town Council has promoted Felixstowe in Flower as a way to transform the town with floral displays and colour throughout the season. I am delighted to see just how many local businesses are supporting the scheme alongside the local community this year. It really makes such a difference to see all these superb flowers along our streets and in all the local gardens.” Felixstowe residents are being encouraged to take part in the community scheme, whether it’s creating an impressive window box or a spectacular front garden, everyone can get involved. To participate in Felixstowe in Flower, visit Felixstowe.gov.uk for further details. A competition entry form is available on the Felixstowe Council website, which includes all of the categories available to enter this year. Felixstowe Town Council has been organising and running the initiative for over 30 years, putting up floral baskets and displays each year and awarding prizes to community participants at the end of the summer.

GOLDEN HOMEMADE PORK SCHNITZEL

At the heart of every great community... is great food! My other half and children will insist that ‘everything tastes better in breadcrumbs’. Well, this is an absolute gem of a recipe for a quick dinner that will go down faster than it takes for you to make it!

Place your flour on a plate and season; put the beaten egg in a bowl next to it and the breadcrumbs on a separate plate next to that so that you have an easy flow line between chopping board and frying pan. Heat the frying pan with oil and turn to a medium heat.

Ingredients:

Coat the pork with flour, then dip in the egg and then lastly a coat in the breadcrumbs. Place each piece in the frying pan, in batches for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden and cooked through.

8x Pork Medallions or 450g pork cut into 8 pieces

Transfer to a plate lined with kitchen paper before serving.

1 tbsp plain flower

Best served with a side of coleslaw, salad, your favourite fries and a squeeze of lemon.

1 egg, beaten 100g breadcrumbs (natural, Panko or gluten free) Salt & pepper to taste Method: Place your pork on a chopping board and lay over a piece of cling film or foil. Use a rolling pin to bash each piece until it is no thicker than 1cm.

FELIXSTOWE TOWN AND AROUND Flaming June has gone and it is now flaming July! As a gardener I am longing for some rain as the gardens really need it. Someone of the radio today jokingly asked when the schools break up for summer as that will be the sign for the weather to change! Along with 139 other people I attended the 3rd Annual event staged by the Felixstowe Forward team at the Orwell Hotel. This year’s event was especially interesting as the format was for presentations on four topics that will have a far reaching effect on the future of Felixstowe if they all go ahead. The presentations were on (a) How can a Business Improvement District help businesses thrive in Felixstowe? (b) Felixstowe – new horizons. An iconic Leisure Centre in Felixstowe. (c) New housing and infrastructure and (d) South Seafront. This is the area from the Pier down to Manor End. It will be up to the businesses in Felixstowe as to whether there is enthusiasm to become a BID. Those businesses who are involved will pay a levy based on the rateable value of their premises and the money raised will then be invested into the Town in any way that the businesses choose. A party of us from Felixstowe visited Bury St. Edmunds before Christmas last year to hear about how the BID in Bury is benefitting the Town. As you are probably aware the idea of a new Leisure Centre on the North side of Felixstowe is out to consultation which can be found on the District council’s website. There is a clear preference to have a new build Centre – the question being where? Views expressed at the event included the need for accessibility on foot and by cycle from the Town as not everyone – especially young people – will have the use of a car!

Update from Felixstowe’s town councillor The most exciting presentation for me was that relating to South Felixstowe. This is an area of the Town that has been somewhat neglected over the years – although getting rid of the eyesore of a yacht pond and creating the events area plus the new Pier building has seen that area become attractive and popular. The North Sea Hotel has had a demolition order made on it – so, hopefully, that will be removed from our seafront in the not-too-distant future. Some work is taking place on the shelters – but it is the garden areas that were of interest and presented with a concept design of “rooms”. Volleyball and games on the area adjacent to Stan Harris’s outlets – a dune garden, formal garden, play landscape/sculpture (a place to gather, entertain and play), a parklet around the Arwela Road shelter, another dune garden and finally an artisan street (a place to shop, saunter and eat). All of this would involve removal of the Tamarisk hedge and wall which act as a barrier linking the promenade and the gardens at the present time. And finally, a restaurant on the site of the car park that was part of the Bloor sales office when the Martello Place development was taking place. This was always a scheduled part of the development. Felixstowe is developing and regenerating fast, there really is a positive buzz around the resort and all of the above will continue this positivity. WOODBRIDGE ART CLUB Janice Murray

Celebrating fifty years! Woodbridge Art Club was born in March 1968 and held its first exhibition in August that year. Having no suitable premises in which to hold an exhibition they hung their paintings on the railway station railings at the Town Quay. It proved so popular with the public that they continued to hang exhibitions there for several years. In 1973 Mrs Jean Gardner, who’d bought the Tide Mill and the surrounding buildings, offered the lower granary to the club on a peppercorn rent for 28 years. Using the funds they’d raised to buy materials, the club members did all the building work to renovate the granary, with the help of family and friends. They were very fortunate in having two members with building expertise, Alf Leech and Jack Lloyd. The programme of talks, demonstrations and workshops continued with more space to spread out. The club grew and thrived so much over the next decade or so that there wasn’t enough room for all the activities and no new members could be accommodated. A waiting list was growing. Something had to be done. The members decided to build an extension on the back garden and as it happened, a new member, Don Tucker, was a retired architect and he was happy to draw up plans and get the necessary building permissions. A new light and airy studio was opened in 1998. To celebrate its 50th anniversary the club has arranged a number of activities. Firstly a competition was held for paintings to be included in a calendar for 2019, now on sale. An anniversary dinner was held in the club in March and greatly enjoyed by all including three or four of the original members who were still around in Woodbridge. On the weekend of August 11th and 12th the club is holding an outdoor exhibition 22 The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine - August 2018

to celebrate that first one held in 1968. Club members will be mounting the exhibition in Whisstocks Square, outside the Long Shed. It will include pottery and lace as well as paintings, and the Woodbridge Camera Club will be holding their exhibition outside as well. A book is being produced chronicling the club’s history, complete with many interesting photos. The exhibition will be open from 10am – 5pm both days. All in all it will be a fabulous weekend of art and photography on the riverside. Shiona Hardie

NOW OPEN! A successful launch to Aqua Park Suffolk Aqua Park opened at Alton Water for its first super soaking season with special guest Michaela Doherty of Jimmy’s Farm and a pledge to support local charity, The East Anglian Air Ambulance. On 6th July 2018, Aqua Park Suffolk welcomed more than 150 people from local groups, businesses and schools to be the first to splash out on the brand new water course. Michaela Doherty cut the ribbon to officially open the park and The East Anglian Air Ambulance, Aqua Park Suffolk’s chosen charity, attended with a critical care paramedic (CCP) to show support for the event and offer some first aid training. Michaela Doherty, Managing Director of Jimmy’s Farm, said: “As a fellow local business, I was delighted to support the launch of Aqua Park Suffolk. The park is ideal for families and I’m sure the park will attract lots of local people looking for something a little bit different during the school holidays.” Mark Milsom, Critical Care Paramedic and Training Manager at EAAA, said; “We are so honoured to have been chosen as the charity to support by Aqua Park Suffolk.

We are a community funded charity so every donation made helps us keep our helicopters in the sky. It’s been great to see everyone out here having so much fun enjoying this fantastic facility.” Open now until the 9th September 2018, Aqua Park Suffolk is a staggering 8000 square metres and features 72 exciting obstacles, including climbing walls, trampolines, balance bars, rockers, rollers and the UK’s biggest slides. Whatever the weather, Aqua Park Suffolk will offer one of the most entertaining ways to enjoy the Great British outdoors this summer. Due to the high interest already received, visitors are encouraged to pre-book at www.aquaparksuffolk.co.uk to avoid disappointment. Tickets for the park are priced at £20 for a 50-minute session on the water. As an active attraction, visitors to Aqua Park Suffolk need to be ready for the physical challenge and must be aged eight and over 1.2m tall and able to swim 50 metres unaided in a buoyancy vest to take part. Buoyancy vests are provided, and wetsuits are included in the ticket price. TAKE THE LEAD Dogs - you’ve got to love them Keeping dogs as pets is said to have huge health benefits, not the least because it gets you out and about with them each and every day, come rain or shine. Guide dogs are no different, and it’s becoming sadly common to hear of attacks on them from other dogs, with a staggering 12 reports of attacks each month currently. 60% of these come from dogs off the lead and guide dogs that would otherwise be working can even be forced into early retirement due to injuries.

Campaign Events Launch at Jollyes Saturday 4th August 10am-3pm Jollyes – The Pet Superstore, Commercial Park, Commercial Rd, Ipswich IP1 1UZ

In addition to the emotional and physical trauma of an attack, for the dog and owner, this issue has cost the Guide Dog charity over £1.3 million since 2010 – the equivalent of 90,000 guide dog leads.

We’ll be launching our campaign and offering advice to dog owners. Come and collect one of our limited goodie bags for your dog! The Mayor will be attending at 11am to say a few words.

Today, the charity is launching their Take the Lead campaign, calling for the public to put their dog on a lead when they see a guide dog working. Canine researchers from the charity say this simple action could be the key to preventing future attacks.

Ipswich Market Awareness Days

This year Ipswich council are participating in Take the Lead, and residents from all over Suffolk are welcome to get involved, including residents of the Felixstowe and Woodbridge area. Guide Dogs Researcher, Rachel Moxon, says, “Guide dogs are life-changing for those living with sight loss, helping their owners live life to the full. Attacks on our dogs destroy confidence and can mean a guide dog owner once again loses their freedom and independence. Putting your dog on a lead when you see a guide dog working allows you to have more control over the situation. Even if you know your dog is well-behaved, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.” For more information about the campaign and the upcoming events visit: https:// www.guidedogs.org.uk/news/news/#lead

Tuesday 7th, Thursday 9th, Saturday 11th August Come along to our stall at Ipswich Market to find out more about guide dogs and preventing attacks on guide dogs, assistance dogs and working dogs. Blindfold Walk Thursday 9th August Starting at Giles Statue Join MP Sandy Martin for a blindfold walk around the town centre. The aim of the walk is to help people understand the mobility issues blind and partially sighted people face. #TakeTheLead Dog Walk Sunday 12th August 11am Christchurch Park Get involved in Ipswich’s big dog walk! Bring along your dog for a short walk around Christchurch Park to support the campaign. There will be two length walks to cater for all. Arrive at 10.30am for registration. A suggested donation is £5 to Guide Dogs. Come along and be part of a great community. 27 August 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 29

ART ON THE PROM Starting at the beginning of September, here’s all you need to know about the upcoming event!

The fourteenth annual Art on the Prom will take place on Sunday September 3rd from 10am-4.30pm on the sea front from the pier to the Spa Gardens. The layout is expected to be the same as in the last two years, using the approach road to the Spa Theatre for entertainment and some art stalls and bringing the art activity tents into the heart of the event. Art on the Prom is a free contemporary art fair where professional and hobby artists display and sell original artwork. The beautiful setting adds an extra dimension. In 2016 over 100 artists were featured, covering a wide range of media including painting, ceramics, photography, glass, jewellery and textiles. Photographs of artists’ works for 2017 are on the Studio page of this website. Art on the Prom is a free community event which attracts over 20,000 people. As well as the opportunity to browse or buy original artworks the free art activity tents, which run throughout the day, provide young and old with the chance to have a go at creating their own piece in one of the many media available. This year we have a new opportunity for those aged 15 and above to join a Drawing Workshop led by experienced artist and teacher, Malcolm Cudmore. These are free and will be repeated at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm. Places are limited. Please contact Malcolm to book a place on 01986893291 or email at info@malcolm-cudmore.com

Art on the Prom works with local schools and at the event a display of local children’s artwork is featured . A variety of bands and entertainers perform throughout the day to add to the enjoyment of the occasion. Why not put the date in your diary now? Art on the Prom is supported by grants from local councils as well as sponsorship from local businesses. It is a non-profit making organisation which aims to promote economic well-being, provide cultural and leisure opportunities and foster a pride in our community. WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS & MEN WILL NEVER SAY NO TO A MARS BAR Random ramblings by our local lad Victoria Wood once said, “Women can’t fold maps and men can’t get interested in headboards,” and I have to say she had a point. Now I know I’m going to be treading on potential thin ice over the next 450 words or so and I’ve no doubt I’ll be carefully considering every chunk of prose and making frequent use of the backspace key whilst scribing this month’s ramble. It’s a fact though, men and women are different and I’m not referring to the obvious anatomical dissimilarities. Let’s start with bags. Ladies, firstly why does your bag have to match your shoes? And why give yourself that impossible choice. Okay I’ll qualify that. You’ll have in your arsenal a Day Satchel, a Day Clutch, the indispensable Cross-Body, ooh let’s not forget the Evening Clutch, Straw Basket, the Medium Sized Shoulder Bag, Chic Tote and a Casual Day Bag and I’m bound to have missed some. Blokes on the other hand will have a rucksack. Erm, let me think, oh yeah and a screwed up plastic Lidl bag. Job done! Neither will match our trainers or flip-flops I have to add. Am I in trouble yet? No? Then let’s move on to the bathroom. So let’s think about this. Fellas will have, let’s say, 6 items in the bathroom at most. There’ll be a toothbrush (very possibly older than the recommended 3 months), toothpaste (squeezed from the middle), razor (if the wet variety it’ll likely be clogged with benign protein matter), shampoo (whatever was on offer), shower gel or soap (if a few days old the latter will resemble Chewbacca) and a towel (I’m not expanding on this item). Ladies on the other hand will have on average

312 different items, 92% of which will be unidentifiable by men but possibly tried out by them in secret at some point. But a word of warning, don’t experiment with anything called ‘Veet’ gents, if you do you’ll end up looking like a Peruvian Inca Orchid! If Sharon, Amanda and Kirsty go out for the evening, guess what? They’ll refer to each other as Sharon, Amanda and Kirsty. Now, if Dave, John and Richard share a lad’s night out on the town, for the entire evening they’ll be called Smiffy, Skids and Frogger! Holidays. That’s simple. The guys will book a low-cost airline ticket with cabin luggage only, which they pack the night before. Why? Well he’ll shove in a single roll-on deodorant (they last longer), 2 pairs of shorts (beach and evening), flip flops as they’ll do for all day and there’ll be no need to pack socks. A few tee shirts which can be sponged down if he drops any chilli sauce from his kebab and novelty pants. The ladies will write a list a month ahead, stage the packing by category and log on to the airline website to order two extra hold bags. The list will be revisited up until the evening before departing only to spend the night without sleep through worrying about what she’s forgotten. Then there’s driving…oh darn, I’ve run out of words! By Dean Wales August 2018 - The Felixstowe & Woodbridge Magazine 33

Surprise, surprise, August was named in honour of Augustus Caesar. It has 31 days because Augustus wanted as many days as Julius Caesar’s month of July*. Previously named Sextilis in Latin, it was the sixth month of the Roman calendar. *They took that extra day from February. August loans itself to some momentous historic events, including the eruption of Vesuvius in Pompeii in AD 79, the opening of the restored Sistine Chapel in Rome in 1483, and both Ferdinand Magellan (1519) and Christopher Columbus (1492) setting sail. August is the only month this year that begins on a Thursday. In a leap year, February begins on the same day of the week as August.
