Architectural design is no longer dictated by form with structure following. Structures have become an integral part of the form-finding process and the same can be said for materiality. Architecture has always relied on craftsmanship as an integral part of their knowledge. Now, innovation has demanded a reflection on past techniques. Today, the range of possibilities that we are faced with has become so vast that we cannot ignore the possibility to reverse the current trend in design process. This project started with a one week workshop of RhinoVault, hosted by Matthias Rippman&Silvan Oesterle and followed by 3 months of robotic fabrication (styrofoam lasercutting) and manually putting together the structure at the RDM campus in Rotterdam.

CURTAIN UP!

STATUS: BSC STUDIO PROJECT / exhibited PERIOD: SEPTEMBER 2010-JANUARY 2011 LOCATION: VIENNA, AT TEAM: arh. ALEXANDER NANU, arh. BIANCA TAMASAN

The task of this studio was to reanimate the Burgtor in the historical centre of Vienna, a building that almost goes unnoticed, despite its monumentality, as it is cloed off to the public and it is perceived more as a passage. The idea of the project was to open up the Burgtor, so it is not perceived as a transition gate between the Heldenplatz and the Maria Theresia Platz anymore, but as an active actor of the historic ensemble. Therefore, our proposal was to lift the curtains and stage a play, let the passanger move through the building and make the stage move itself, so that it becomes dynamic and always sets a different scene. To fulfill this scenographic concept, the interior, with its conflicting and unseen monuments, is emptied and all the objects that are installed are light and moveable: flights of stairs, exhibition panels, a mobile bar and a mobile exhibition box. The only static element is the box containing the sanitary units. In order to ensure the flexibility ofthe space as well as the theatrical experience, the ceiling bekomes and extensive steel framework from which all the element will hang and be moved on the complementary trails,

EXPLORING UNCONSCIOUS

STATUS: MSC GRADUATION PROJECT / explore lab / winery PERIOD: MARCH 2013-JANUARY 2014 LOCATION: UNSPECIFIED COORDINATORS: dr. arh. SANG LEE, dr. ir. ANDREJ RADMAN, prof. ing. HUIB PLOMP INDIVIDUAL WORK

Explore lab studio had no brief, I was free to elaborate my own task for this project. The starting point was my fascination with the subconscious mind and the way it is essential in our decision making, be it in our everyday life or when it comes to designing, even though we often portray architecture as the conscious, rational making of space. We don`t see things as they are, we see things as we are When making decisions, our brains are called upon to integrate extremely isparate types of information and we seem to beliebe that this information is processed logically, but in fact, our brains are not taturally equipped to do a good job at integrating complex quantitative facts, probably because it primarily evolved to negotiate social situations and survive natural threats, not do quantitative puzzles. The tension of the project relies in the clash between the irrational, gestural approach and the tendency to bring the abstract into actuality. The product is only an instant of that fluid and continuous process, an instant of the gesture that was captured into a physical object. Certain moments of the buildings are characterized by a higher degree of randomness, sometimes redundancy, but precisely through this friction they receive additional affordances and are available for the viewer to interpret and process them in a subject specific way.

GESTURE AS DESIGN APPROACH

SURREALISM - Psychic automatism in its pure state, by which one proposes to express — verbally, by means of the written word, or in any other manner — the actual functioning of thought. Dictated by the thought, in the absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern. André Breton, Surrealist Manifesto

BULLETISM

THREAD ON PAPER

Even though my gestures were uncontrolled, free movements, in a way, they were already constrained by the way the movement of my body developed in a certain way, over a certain amount of time, due to certain experiences and due to the certain environment i found myself being at the moment of conception (tools, medium, lights, time, etc.)

GESTURE AS DESIGN APPROACH

FROTTAGE

TEXTILE TENSION

LASER SCRATCHES, PAPER, WIRE

Determined by how I understood the gesture, I encounter surfaces that intertwine in an illogical way to create spaces offering them additional qualities such as light-shadow plays, seeming to sometimes question gravity or grant a very specific view point through two walls that stand close to each other, where you can look through but not move through.

CONCEPT DESIGN JANUARY 2015 TARGU MURES, RO REEA

TEAM: arh. KLAUS BIRTHLER, arh. BIANCA TAMASAN PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION: MEASUREMENTS, SURVEY, CONCEPT DESIGN, PLANS, VIZUALISATIONS

Award winning web development and new media agency Reea wishes to refurbish its cantine into a space that becomes a multi-purpose room after the lunch hours. The design challange was to reanimate the interior of the 19th century building in order for it to become a noticeable presence in the center of Targu Mures, where it is located. The design process started with a survey of the companies employees, in order to understand what wishes they had for their lunch room, which were considered for the design, along with the expectations of the client. In order to attract the attention of the passerby in the street, the proposed solution was to focus on the ceiling, which would be covered by a wave-like cnc-milled plywood structure, that would create an intriguing texture as viewed from the street level, as well as from the inside. At the same time, the proposal offered a solution for the desired number of seats, but in different configurations, to fit the needs of the employees as well as the dynamics of a contemporary event space.

INDIVIDUAL WORK WEB: www.liliac.com

Transylvania, the land of ”gold and grape juice”, as the saxon hymn ”Siebenbürgen” (Transylvania, literary: seven fortresses) describes it, hides the most fascinating cultural and natural landscapes. On top of the curvy hills of the Baros-Lechinta area, one can find the Liliac winery, established in 2012 to fructify the generous soil of this almost forgotten place, sheltered by the carpathian belt, which produces its whine from some of the finest grapes. Every year Liliac hosts a competition for the design of the label of the first wine that is produced in the respective year, Young.Liliac. The brief of the competition is to design a fresh label, for a cuvee made out of sauvignon blanc & pinot gris.

REALISED / competition AUGUST 2015 - MAY 2016 REGHIN, RO CARTURESTI / ROD

TEAM: arh. BIANCA TAMASAN, ing, CRISTINA PURCAR PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION: IDEA, DESIGN, FABRICATION, LOGO, PACKAGE WEB: www.facebook.com/semndinreghin

The brief of the competition was to design an object that would make the life of a reader easier. At the same time, one of the main requirements was for the product to be locally produced. =semn= is a concept that was born after thousands of memorable lines, marked by permanent ink, eyeliners, fluorescent markers or whatever was handy while reading a book on the go. =semn= is an extention of the reflex to underline outstanding quotes, essential passages or unknown terms, when all you have on you is a book and the bookmark. =semn= is inspired by the carpenter pencil, but is much flatter and softer, so it can work as a booksign as well. =semn= is made in Reghin, Romania, from lasercut cherry wood veneer and 2mm cylindrical graphite. Because of its flat shape, it is sharpened by rubbing it against the sand paper included in the package.

DEALURILE UILEI INDIVIDUAL WORK

WEB: www.facebook.com/DealurileUilei

Not far from the Liliac winery, in the Batos area, the hills are filled with orchards, famous for giving some of the best fruit in the country. Dealurile Uilei is a family enterprise, that produces fruit and canned goods from fruit and vegetables, mainly syrup, jam and a Romanian speciality, called zacusca. The farm has been on the market since about 2011, and although the products were of very high quality, a fresh, appealing image had to be created. A brand was created, together with the logo and the look of the products changed entirely, to become an eye-catcher on the shelf.
