There’s only one destination in the U.S. to experience gliding in a floatplane over snow-capped mountains, viewing the vibrant northern lights, and observing majestic wildlife all in a day’s time. INCHEON BRIDGE Connecting South Korea’s Yeongjong Island with the mainland is Incheon Bridge, a massive structure marking the route to Incheon International Airport, which serves more than 70 million passengers annually. The bridge is an outstanding example of cable-stayed construction, with steel cables strung from soaring towers to the road platform. This is a subtle variation from the true suspension design featured in the Golden Gate Bridge, where the driving surface literally hangs from the cables. The central portion of Incheon Bridge consists of two 750-foot concrete masts reinforced with state-of-the-art engineering in a seismically-active region. The towering cable-stayed section is only part of the entire 13-mile span and the winding structure is dramatically illuminated at night, appearing like a neon serpent floating across the Yellow Sea. Incheon International Airport—most people traversing the bridge arrive or depart from this world-class facility—is an attraction in its own right, constructed on reclaimed land 30 miles from central Seoul. Considered one of the world’s best, Incheon International offers a museum, movie theaters, spa, ice skating rink, ca-

sino, and surprisingly serene gardens. The airport was conceived when tourism to South Korea exploded after the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, supplementing the nation’s already robust business travel. China is well known for its massive public works projects, and this cable- stayed bridge—the product of a decade of design and four years of construction—spans a full 22 miles and was the longest open-sea crossing in the world when it opened in 2008. The bridge’s most recognizable section features diamond-shaped twin towers and the entire structure is anchored by 7,000 steel piles, an engineering and construction marvel in challenging waters. Located on an island at the midpoint of the bridge’s span is a service center that offers shopping, dining and exhibition space, as well as a nearly 500-foot-tall observation tower. The dominant tourist attraction in the area is rapidly-evolving Shanghai, one of the world’s most dynamic destinations. Viewed as China’s most Westernized city, Shanghai is where ancient temples share streets with sleek glass skyscrapers and glitzy nightclubs, and where a classic French dinner is as easy to find as a dim sum feast. If there is a trend occurring anywhere in the world, it does not take long to find its way to Shanghai.

AROUND THE GLOBE Throughout the world there are magnificent examples of innovative, inspiring bridge design. Malaysia’s Seri Wawasan Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge, but unlike many of the symmetrical megastructures in that genre, its single pylon and cables lean forward to create the illusion of a ship’s sail. The bridge, spanning Putrajaya Lake, is bathed in vibrant, rotating colors at night, providing another dimension to what is arguably, a massive piece of public art. Pedestrian bridges have become popular with world-class designers and the Zubizuri footbridge (a.k.a. Puente del Cam- po Volantin) in Bilbao, Spain was composed by legendary architect Santiago Calatrava. With slanted, soaring cables rising above the glass-decked walkway, this bridge elevates the journey over the river Nervión on foot, and the architect’s futuristic Puente de la Mujer does the same for a pedestrian crossing in Buenos Aires. Singapore’s dazzling Helix Bridge, near the city’s signature Marina Bay Sands complex, is yet another foot- bridge that pushes the envelope of design. The graceful, 2,600-foot Nescio Bridge, traversing one of Amsterdam’s canals, accommodates pedestrians and cyclists on ribbons of steel suspended by cables. Accommodating motor vehicles is Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Bridge, a series of wavelike sculpted forms—they appear to dip in and out of the water—authored by the late celebrity architect Zaha Hadid. In America, there are two extraordinary, beloved bridges who’s distinctive aesthetics never get old: the Art Deco-inspired Golden Gate in San Francisco and the 19th century Brooklyn Bridge in New York whose neo-Gothic styling is unique among suspension bridges. With a blend of engineering and artistry, these classic structures add some glamor to the daily commute. 59
