ur furry friends deserve nothing but the best. Pets are our living, breathing companions in life; often our greatest pairs of listening ears. When it comes to enriching their lives, there are plenty of experiences, clothes, toys, and treats that can provide a high-end lifestyle for your prized pooch. The world of luxury pet accessories is no longer a niche market — thousands of companies exist to serve the tiny friends in your life. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices spoke to three giants in this industry, boasting specialty food, clothes, and images that even the fussiest feline would be proud to own. First up is food. When you think of a farm-to-table dining experience,

you’re not often thinking of the pets in your life. But Atlanta-based Farm Hounds Treats intends to feed dogs across the globe with locally and transparently sourced treats. Founder and co-owner Jean Finney says she values high-quality farms that treat animals as if they were raised in the wild. “All animals are not the same. Just like humans, dogs are what they eat.” Finney says. “Allowing the animals to follow their Natural proclivities throughout their life results in a happier, healthier animal.” Finney discovered “regenerative agriculture” after her first business partnership with the farm White Oak Pastures. Together, they produced high-quality dog chews to support

better dental health for animals. The idea was to benefit the animals and the earth by creating not just sustainable food, but also zero-waste that won’t damage the environment. Jumping to the present day, Farm Hounds now offers all kinds of treats made with 100-percent farm-fresh beef: chews, hides, and toppers (“sprinkle onto any meal to add extra nutrition and excitement!”). They also offer a subscription box for your pets — sent on the first of every month, an array of goodies awaits your pet right at the front door. Nicknamed “Maya the Dox,” (her same handle on Instagram,) she’s classy, flashy, and above all, sassy. Herdog-mom,Christine Chang,founded Sassy Woof, the spunky dog clothing company taking the world by storm. The company is based out of Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., and offers everything from hands-free leashes and collars, to harnesses and matching sweaters for you and your pets. They don’t skimp on quality either: the fabric is light and breathable, the styles can be custom-printed, and the hair bows are on par with the most stylish trends. “We know every dog has a different personality, but deep down, every dog has a little ‘sass’ in their walk. We want to bring out the character and pawsitive vibes that dogs bring into our lives!” Chang says. She recalls starting her brand out of necessity, wanting to highlight the personal style of the audacious Maya the Dox. “It was challenging to find modern and affordable products for my petfluencer, Maya. There were virtually no options in the market, and yet many parents like myself were facing the same issues,” Chang says. “Three years later, Sassy Woof is an e-commerce leader and the place for dog owners looking for comfortable and stylish everyday gear without breaking the bank.” But style is not the only priority for this founder and entrepreneur. Just as important as fashion is comfortability, 30


efficiency, and safety, Chang says. Especially in dog harnesses and leashes, Chang ensures that every product is reliable/independently tested for durability. The products are available for purchase in more than 100 stores in the U.S. and even in stores around the globe. Circling to a different part of that globe is Ralph Hargarten, a professional pet photographer based in Hamburg, Germany. Hargarten is skilled in bringing out the wild side of the wildlife in his portraits. Ralph photographs everything from pouting pugs, delicate butterflies, slithering snakes, cheesing puppies, and age-old rhinoceros. What you might ponder, however, is the process of snapping these pictures: how does he do it? What does it take to tame a wild animal?

“Unsurprisingly, this is often a test of patience,” Hargarten remarks. He says he works closely with the trainers to learn the abilities of the specific animal. “Armed with this knowledge, I look for a suitable camera position to photograph them at eye level from the front. Only a few animals actually stand still; most of them move or move their heads.
