BEFORE YOU SAY “I DO”
W
hat is marriage? Social media has got us all mistakenly perceiving marriage for what it’s not. You scroll through Facebook and Instagram to spot all these pictureperfect relationships with cute captions then you pause for a while to think and if your relationship doesn’t look the same, you think something is missing. You fall in a delusional trap that marriage and relationships have to always be rainbows and butterflies, and if the happiness curve isn’t always going up you start doubting your whole relationship. Let me tell you one thing, you’re not less lucky, other couples aren’t necessarily more privileged, you just need a reality check. Marriage is the most complex mix of contradicting things all together, but it is still beautiful in its own way. It is about candlelit dinners and romantic getaways, yes, but it’s also about getting exposed to one another’s dark side. Marriage is about jokes, laughter, a movie night with your favorite pizza, but it is also about dealing with one another’s grumpiness and frustrations. Marriage is intolerable, crazy and sometimes impossible to handle, but so is everything else in life and it is always your choice whether to make the best out of things or just falsely belief you are destined to live miserably. Marriage is all about choices; making reasonable, responsible, and proper choices. It begins with choosing the right person, to choosing to sacrifice, to commit, to compromise, to forgive, and to give genuinely from the heart. So before you say “I do”, ask yourself…. Is this the person you want to spend the rest of your life with? Do you accept your partner as is, or are you trying to change this character to become the image of a partner you have in mind? Are you willing to commit, sacrifice, and compromise? Are you really in love, or do you miss the feeling of being loved? One thing I know for sure, marriage isn’t for those who just want to settle. Get married only if your partner is the one you feel you can be your real self with; no secrets, no lies and no hidden doors. Get married to the one who sees the best in you, who makes you feel comfortable in your own skin. Don’t settle for little, be with the one you feel proud to call your partner, the one who takes you a step forward every day, the one you want to grow old with. And most importantly, don’t get married unless you can vow to be together through thick and thin, in sickness and in health, for better, and for worse. Respect one another, support one another, have faith in one another; that’s the real “happily ever after”!

n an insightful talk with Dina Naeem, Area Director of Communications of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Egypt, she takes us through her inspiring journey of success and breaking free from all limitations. Allow us to take you through her story on how to live life with passion and eagerness

1. WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO ENTER THE HOTEL INDUSTRY? Let me start telling you my story with something I learnt; brilliant things happen when you least expect it. For me, entering the hotel and hospitality industry was by mere chance. At an earlier stage of my life I used to be a child psychologist in a specialized mental hospital in Helwan and I have to say it requires a lot of effort to cope with this job especially when you start to feel it is affecting you on a personal level. I’ve dealt with different cases and every time I felt a part of me being affected. I knew by then it was my time to quit. I’ve spent a couple of years at home with my girls but boredom started taking over, which is a normal feeling for someone who used to lead a working life. Like every other person who wants to start over with their career; I’ve been looking and searching through the magazines and newspaper not sure what is it I want to do and I came across a vacancy of a PR Coordinator at Le Meridien Pyramids. I was sure that this field is new to me of which I have no previous experiences but I believe that one should always try and seize the opportunities because you never know where life can take you the next minute. I didn’t hesitate for a second to apply and sooner than expected I was selected for an interview with Aly Abdel Aziz but that is not the surprising part, I was accepted the same day! From a coordinator I worked my way up through promotions till I became Area Director of Communications.

This is considered as a one-of-a kind deal of worldwide renowned hotels and the most massive acquisition. With the completion of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. acquisition, Marriott International created the world’s largest and best hotel company. Marriott now offers in total 30 of the most comprehensive portfolio of brands including leading lifestyle brands, a significant global footprint, and leadership in the luxury and select-service tiers as well as the convention and resort segment to create the largest hotel chain in the world with more than 5,800 properties and 1.1 million rooms in more than 110 countries. That’s more than 1 out of every 15 hotel room around the globe.

3. WHAT IS THE ADVICE YOU’D GIVE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO SUCCEED IN THE HOTEL INDUSTRY? To be honest I was lucky to learn from the pioneers of this industry like Aly Abdel Aziz, Ibrahim Fahmy, Barry Curran, and Suzy Naga. They taught me all the secrets behind their very rich knowledge, a heritage in this industry. Hospitality is a talent and a spirit that you have to own first, and then you take it from there. If I am to give an advice to anyone who wants to pursue a career in this industry, I’d say work with passion and good spirit. Speaking of passion in work, I remember an incident, one day I was travelling for a business trip with my manager and as we sat for coffee at the airport, I remember a staff member whose spirit of hospitality was all over the place. He wasn’t only doing his job; he was doing it with passion that my manager passed him his business card and offered him an immediate job at one of the hotel chains he’s operating. This is exactly what I mean when I said work with passion. Aim to learn, develop and grow. Read a lot and above all be creative. Don’t be mediocre. Dare to be different, dare to be creative!
4. A WOMAN WHO HOLDS A HIGH POSITION LIKE YOURS MIGHT FIND IT DIFFICULT TO KEEP A WORK-LIFE BALANCE SO HOW DO YOU MANAGE THAT? I’ll be very frank with you, there’s no such thing as the perfect work-life balance. But I’ve learnt how to manage and give every aspect of my life the time needed. Yes it gets tough and hectic especially that my job can get very demanding at times in terms of late working nights, sleeping over at the hotel, travelling, yet through all that I know how to fit in the proper time for my daughters in my busy schedule. I’m blessed with two daughters Malak who is 24 years old and nine-year-old Tamara. There have been days when I had to work three nights in a row out of home, but I always made sure I had my little daughter around and I took all needed measures to make her happy and never feel bored. So in the middle of my busy days, I book her a room to enjoy the pool and show her some fun at the Kids’ Club. All this is to make sure I can compensate my daughters for the time I spend away from them. OCTOBER 2017 | 39
taking risks and trying something new. Surprisingly, the thing you fear the most can be the best you’ve ever tried and you will really regret spending your life in fear of facing the unknown.

Throughout my life I feared being in the middle of the deep sea especially if it’s a cruise that will take more than a day. One day I decided to take the risk and went on a yoga trip in Greece on a cruise ship, totally alone, with not a single person I know. YOUR BODY & WORK ON A BETTER VERSION OF IT BY: ZEINA KASSAS Standing at the airport looking at magazine headlines, I found myself, once again, sick to the stomach by all the headlines about weight loss. “How to Lose 100 pounds Without Trying”, “The Biggest Loser Loses More”, “ Jane Superstar Magically Gets Her Body Back After Baby”, “Gorgeous Supermodel Has A Muffin Top” Oh No! It’s enough to make a girl want feel down. Yes, maintaining a healthy weight is part of owning your health. Yes, obesity is endemic in this country. So I get it. Lots of people would benefit from losing weight. But it guts me to see how much pressure people are under to get skinny. While I believe it doesn’t have to be so hard. As a nutritionist and a coach, the responsibility to help people achieve a healthy weight often lands on my shoulders, but i always agree on my clients on one important point: Love your body the way it is and let’s work together to get the best version of it. I believe that you will never achieve and maintain a healthy weight until you learn to love yourself, fat and all. If your weight loss is fueled by negative mind chatter and self-hatred, weight loss becomes punishment. You know what I’m talking about.

The scenario goes something like this; something’s missing your life, so you go to the fridge and pull out a carton of ice cream. Maybe this will fill you up. You take one bite, but then you remember about Jenny Craig (or Weight Watchers or The Zone Diet or the South Beach Diet- or whatever). While the ice cream melts in your mouth, you start berating yourself. “You’re such a loser. You have no willpower. I can’t believe you just took that bite of ice cream. That’s your whole fat allocation for the day. You can’t do anything right. And if you can’t follow this diet, you’ll be fat and ugly for the rest of your life and nobody will ever love you. You suck. I hate you.” You feel so awful that you dig your spoon in and finish the whole crate of the ice cream. Start by thinking of your weight within the context of your overall wellbeing. That means widening your focus to encompass more than just the numbers on the scale, the way your jeans fit and yes, even what you see in the mirror. Embarking on a healthy weight loss program should inspire you, energize you and make you feel proud of yourself. It also takes time and patience. This can be a tall order for many, but remember—when you begin a weight loss process
from a place of self-love and acceptance, you are more likely to set realistic goals and allow for the little setbacks and disappointments that are a common stumbling block for many. 3 MOVES FOR A SLIMMER WAIST BEFORE
A perfectly toned body is every woman’s dream. Getting in shape is a challenge that requires effort and commitment, for miracles don’t happen overnight. Being a bride-tobe can add a lot more pressure; you have a pile of planning that needs your undivided attention yet you still need to look your best on such a big day. What is commonly seen in supermodels is that they have slim waists, so maybe that is all you need to nail it in your white dress. Needless to say, refraining from sugary and processed food will help in speeding up the process, but you still need to exercise to get the desired results and there are effective and easy moves that’ll guarantee getting you there.
SIDE CRUNCH
This exercise is known to be powerful in giving you a shapely waist and defined oblique. How to do it? Lie on one of your left side and have your legs extended while placing your right hand on the opposite side of your waist. Have your left elbow pointed up, tighten your abs, and start lifting your left leg. Hold it up for a couple of seconds before returning to the starting position. Repeat the same with the opposite leg and aim for 5 reps at least on each side.
RUSSIAN TWIST
The Russian Twist is an effective exercise as it gets your entire core engaged, including the abdominal muscles and the obliques. How to do it? Sit on the floor and rest your heels on it with your knees bent. Make sure your back is straight and tilt your torso slightly backwards. Keep your arms hanging in the air and start tilting to the left and to the right while tightening your abs.

The side plank-up can tone up your body as it targets several
muscles, including the obliques, abdomen, and inner thighs. How to do it? Lie on one of your sides having your upper foot placed over the lower one. Make sure your elbow is aligned with your shoulder. Now that you’re in the right position, raise your leg and keep yourself balanced. Hold your leg up for as long as you can then go back to the starting position. Repeat the same with the opposite side.

DELICIOUS RECIPES TO SAVOR BY: RAMY SOLIMAN
BALSAMIC CARAMELIZED ONIONS BURGER SLIDERS INGREDIENTS: 1/4 kg of minced beef 1 tablespoon of butter 1 medium red onion 2 teaspoons of sugar 1 teaspoon of vegetables oil 3 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar Handful of Arugula 3 teaspoons of mayonnaise Salt and pepper to taste 4 Brioche burger buns OPTIONAL AND RECOMMENDED TOPPINGS: Sautéed mushrooms Cheddar cheese STEPS: 1. In a bowl, seasoned the minced beef with salt and pepper and shape it equally into four mini patties, and let it chill in the fridge till everything is ready. The key to a good juicy burger is using good quality ground beef with 80% lean and 20% fat. 2. Cut the onion into thin slices. On medium heat pan, add the oil and the onions with some salt and keep stirring constantly. 5 minutes later, add the sugar and balsamic vinegar and keep stirring until the onions are softened. The red onions are sweet already, so this is a great recipe if you’re into sweet and savory flavors. 3. On high heat pan, place the butter in it and cook the four patties for 5 minutes on each side. If you’re adding cheese, place it on top of the patties and cover the pan to melt perfectly while cooking the 2nd side. 4. Butter- toast the buns and now you’re ready to assemble your sliders. 5. Spread some mayo at the bottom and then place some fresh arugula below the patty. And finally top that patty with a generous amount of balsamic caramelized onions. 6. Serve it with oven baked potato wedges.

STEAK AU POIVRE INGREDIENTS: 2 pieces of your favorite steak cut, I used beef fillet 1 tablespoon of butter A handful of crushes peppercorns 200ml of of cooking cream Salt to taste STEPS: 1. On a board, spread the crushed peppercorns and the coat the steak with it perfectly and then season the steak with salt. 2. On high heat pan, place the butter in it and cook the steak for 5 minutes on each side for a perfect medium-rare steak. 3. Time to make the french pepper sauce while letting your steak rest. All you have to do is scratch all the burnt and sticky flavors in the pan by pouring the cooking cream in it and stir well until it thickens up nicely. 4. Cut the steak, drizzle some of that flavorful sauce on it, and serve it with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach.
CHOCOLATE (LINDT) LAVA CAKE INGREDIENTS: 80 grams of chocolate, I used Lindt with almonds and cranberries to add a crunch and unique flavours 1 and 1/2 tablespoon of unsalted butter 1 egg 1 egg yolk 1/8 cup of flour 1/4 cup of powdered sugar Pinch of salt STEPS: 1. Preheat your oven to 210C. 2. Coat your 2 ramekins with butter and then dust it with coco powder. 3. Chop the chocolate into smaller pieces to melt easier. 4. In a double boiler, melt the chocolate and the butter until the mixture is completely smooth. You can also use the microwave. Just don’t let it set more than 15 seconds without stirring it so it doesn’t burn. 5. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, powdered sugar, and salt. 6. Whisk the egg and the egg yolk in a separate bowl. 7. Now that you’ve got everything ready, you’ll slowly pour the egg mixture and the dry ingredients into the chocolate bowl and gently mix everything together. 8. Divide your mixture equally into the 2 ramekins and bake it for 14 minutes exactly. 9. Let it cool off for a minute then invert it in a plate and serve it with ice cream. OCTOBER 2017 | 57
PIZZA SOUP INGREDIENTS: For the soup: 1 small onion 1 clove of garlic 4 mushrooms 4 slices of pepperoni 2 tablespoons of butter 1 can of diced tomato 3/4 tablespoon of sugar 1/2 teaspoon of oregano 1/2 cube of vegetables bouillon 1/4 cup of cooking cream Handful of fresh basil Salt and pepper to taste FOR THE CROSTINI: 1/4 cup of melted butter 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon of grated Parmesan cheese Mozzarella cheese Mini Pepperoni, or you can use cookie cutter to make it mini Sliced baguette Salt and pepper to taste STEPS: 1. Finely chop the onion, garlic, pepperoni, and mushroom into mini bit-sized pieces. 2. Melt the butter in a large pot and then place the mini bits mixture and sautÊ it for 8 minutes. 3. Pour the tomato in the pot and stir well, and then sprinkle the sugar and mix again. The sugar is used to balance the acidity of the tomatoes. 4. Add the bouillon, oregano, cream salt, and pepper and mix well. Let it simmer for 10 minutes. 5. Time to make the crostini while the soup is simmering. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with the garlicky powder, parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper, and then brush the sliced baguette with that mixture. Top it with mozzarella cheese and pepperoni, and then bake it in a preheated oven at 210C for 8 minutes or until the cheese melted perfectly. 6. After the soup is all thickened and simmered perfectly, add the fresh basil and mix. Serve the soup in bowls and top it with the crostini and you’re ready to go.

Our concept of marriage today is different from what it was a hundred years ago. In the past, women married for financial security and to have a provider for their children. In modern marriages most women no longer marry for economic reasons; they are better educated, pursue well-paying careers and are financially independent. For lots of people the traditional model marriage isn’t working anymore, so when you give it some thought, how can there be a perfect one-size-fits-all model for a relationship when we all have different needs, tastes and wants? We all accept that not everyone likes the same clothes, food, cars, houses and careers and we agree that lying on a secluded beach is one person’s idea of heaven and another’s idea of a no way. We meet a lot of people in our everyday life, and there you can find someone overtly satisfied with his marriage while another will be suffocating and gasping for air; so what happens now? 60 | OCTOBER 2017
THE ART OF MODERN MARRIAGE starts off by knowing yourself really well first followed by identifying your exact needs, wants and aspirations, then comparing these criteria versus your partner’s criteria. The goal here is to reach a common ground along with an honest understanding of what you are both looking for. In order to adapt your marriage to a model that would suit you both for a happily ever after, let’s take a look at some marriage models:
THE APERITIVO MARRIAGE: This is agreeing to a marriage minus kids for a certain period of time to give both of you a chance to see if you are harmonious together. This is usually followed for the first two years or more; in order not to overburden the relationship until you are settled and fully comfortable with each other.

THE LONG-DISTANCE MARRIAGE: You’re married but don’t live together, or only do part-time. The old saying ‘Can’t live with them, can’t live without them’ rings true for a lot of couples. If you’re hugely attracted to each other but with very different personalities, this can make the everyday negotiation of living together difficult. There’s lots of freedom for both to do other things – like pursue demanding careers – with the bonus that you tend to plan the time you do have together more creatively, but you need a high degree of trust with both partners.

In concept, it’s less about love and more about choosing a partner for practical reasons like friendship and wanting the same things out of life. In reality, this can be a highly successful and satisfying option. It actually has more chance of lasting than marriages based on intense passion with little else to go with it. It is basically about spending more time doing ‘friend-type’ things with our partners than ‘love-type’ things.
This marriage is about security and mutual benefit: agreeing to offer someone what they want, in return for what you want. It might be about financial or emotional security and instead of being delusional and thinking it’s about love, you’re honest about the reasons within yourselves. You just might be happy to marry someone who’s less attractive than you in return for longed-for devotion and a promise that they will never cheat.
THE PARENTING MARRIAGE:
Whether you like all these ideas or none of them, the basic takeaway is that no marriage has it all. However, it’s absolutely sound: it’s your marriage. Make your own rules rather than adopting a model that doesn’t fit and always remember that your life is in your hands. It’s completely up to you on how you will embrace and nurture any of these styles!

Some people commit to parenting marriages if they are having some challenges with one another.The upside: you don’t need to be in love to bring up a happy, healthy child as long as you are both good friends and happy to put your children first. SELENA GOMEZ UNDERWENT A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT The Bad Liar singer posted a photo on Instagram, revealing that she underwent a kidney transplant where the donor was her close friend- Francia Raisa. She shared with her fans that she had to undergo the operation due to suffering from Lupus- an autoimmune disease that caused her a kidney failure. RASHA RASHAD: “The Fashion Rebel” 1.COULD YOU TELL US HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR WAY INTO THE FASHION INDUSTRY? I’ll take you back in time to where the story began. My passion has always been for fashion, in the sense that I have always kept up with latest Runway shows, fashion magazines, and had my eyes on the top designers’ latest collections. I always wanted to take my love for fashion to another level so I started off with a simple idea yet very different back then. During my travels, I loved to buy unique pieces to which I hosted an open day party at my place. It was more of a social event for all the fashion-addicts who love to own unique statement pieces. Later on as I started my career in the corporate life, never had I put aside my love for fashion till one day my life took a new turn. I’m a type of person who always seeks to evolve and to have an exposure to new things, new people, and new cultures. On my search for a change, I moved to Barcelona where I started looking for jobs in the fashion industry. It wasn’t the easiest thing to be honest so I thought why not starting my own business then? Spain is full of emerging talents that just needed to be known and recognized not only in Spain, but abroad as well. Taking into consideration the language barrier, it wasn’t the easiest thing for them to showcase their designs on an international level which inspired me to come up with a new idea. I started my own website – www. rebelliousrasha.com- which included a big database of very talented designers from Spain, Italy, and France.

2.WHAT ARE THE DESIGN STYLES YOU PROMOTE AND ARE THESE DESIGNS FOR EVERY WOMAN? The designs you can find on the website are for the artistic women who have a good taste in everything in life, it is for those who want to stand out with character. The style we showcase is Boho-chic; you will find those very iconic pieces with embellishments and embroidery where each piece is unique in its own way. I would say the designs we promote are for women who like to dress up in statement pieces.
3.IN YOUR OPINION WHAT’S THE BEST FASHION ERA AND HOW DO YOU SEE THE EVOLUTION OF THIS INDUSTRY IN GENERAL? For me definitely the 70s! The 70s are a mix of everything, a truly wild era. Fashion back then wasn’t just about some garments; it was a reflection of art, politics and ideology that you can see in the designs. In my opinion fashion evolution is a rotation. Trends from 60s and 70s come back now but with a fresher take. If you take a look at Runway latest trends, you will notice a lot of the trends that have been seen earlier in the fashion scene but have come back with a refined modern twist.
4.WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE INTERNATIONAL DESIGNERS? My top favorites are Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, and Prada. I also love Yves Saint Laurent for being very eccentric in addition to the artsy designs of Miu Miu
5.DO YOU HAVE PLANS FOR FUTURE EXPANSION? Something really brilliant is in the making.We will announce our point of sale in Egypt soon. Moreover, I’ll be participating in Dubai Fashion Event and the big news is I’ll be launching my own design brand soon enough. All the event’s tickets and donations went directly to save and mend hearts of those who need it most. The fundraising event was attended by Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, Dr. Magdy Ishak, Chairman of Board of Trustees, in addition to the members of the Board of Trustees and guests of the most important and well-known figures in Egypt. The event included a number of special musical performances, with a special Arabian Musical performance from Music Hall all the way from Beirut with its cultural flavors as it is described by international media as the place where the heart of world fusion music beats. During the event, a donation purposed auction was held by the famous Sotheby’s Team all the way from London. Mr. Maarten Ten Holder led the auction that entailed a number of selected jewelry pieces, artistic paintings and personal items of Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub which were all donated to the foundation. The whole return of the auction was for the benefit of the Foundation and its heart patients.

NISSAN TO CONFIRM NEW PATROL AND QASHQAI FOR EGYPT AT AUTOMECH-FORMULA 2017 Nissan reaffirms its strong and long-term commitment to Egypt at the 2017 Automech Show in Cairo by announcing the launch of two new models. Speaking at the exhibition, regarded as one of the leading automotive events across North Africa and the Middle East, Nissan’s Motor Egypt Marketing & Sales Director, Ahmed Abdel Ghani, confirms the immediate launch of the iconic Patrol 4x4, which will be followed in October by the latest Qashqai crossover. The two new models will be on display in the Nissan Pavilion alongside the company’s two locally-produced cars – Sunny and Sentra. Also on the stand, for the first time in Egypt, will be the latest generation GT-R supercar which is sure to attract a host of sports car enthusiasts. The Automech Show comes at a time Nissan has increased half year calendar sales in Egypt by 13% versus 2016 and is positioned as the second highest-selling brand in the country. Nissan also have succeeded recently to lead the automotive sales for passenger cars with 26% market share until the end of June 2017. Sales are being driven by Nissan’s two sedans – Sunny and Sentra- which are produced locally in Nissan’s 6th October City plant in Giza. Nissan introduces the new Patrol for the first time at the show. The car is characterized by an attractive, modern design that hints at its powerful 5.6 litre, 400
horsepower engine. This is supported by a seven-speed automatic transmission to accommodate various rough roads and difficult driving conditions as well as on-road performance. Nissan will also delight speed fans visiting its pavilion with the very latest generation GT-R. The GT-R perfectly captures the essence of speed, thanks to its streamlined exterior and intersected sports line. Its dramatic appearance is brought to life by a very powerful, handbuilt V6, 3.8 litre engine which works with a double turbocharged fuel pump including 24 valves. Qashqai, considered the best car in the medium-sized multi-tasking family car category will also be on the stand. The newest Qashqai comes well-equipped with luxurious features and options such as Bluetooth connectivity, multifunctional steering wheel, cruise control, AUX, USB ports and folding mirrors. Thus, Nissan brings premium features into a new level where the car is equipped with around view monitor, front and rear Sonar, D-shape steering wheel for ease of accessibility, dual zone A/C, leather seats, push to start engine, 19 inch sporty look alloy wheels along with a panoramic roof. Furthermore, the new Qashqai is powered by a 1.2-liter, four-cylinder engine capable of generating 117 horsepower at 4,500 Revs per Minute (RPM) and fueling 92, making the car the most fuel efficient in its range while offering the highest level of stability and safety. Nissan also added an optional control system to the vehicle body to help maneuver safely in narrow streets.
