I timidly handed Jonah his gift, wishing we were alone or that at least Dad wouldn’t watch us so closely. It was bad enough to have to do this in front of Alastor, wherever he was, but it was embarrassing to have Dad watching us with an odd look of expectation. "I hope you like it," I whispered nervously as Jonah tore into the package. Jonah held up the heavy wooden frame, "I love it. Now you'll have to give me a photo to put in it." "It's not for photos," I said with a panicky smile. "I had it made up of Louisville slugger baseball bats so that when you have your sporting-goods store, you can frame the first dollar that you earn. I thought it would be a nice touch." Jonah looked down at the frame again, but said nothing. My stomach rolled more with each passing second. Why wasn’t he saying anything? Did he hate it? Was it a stupid gift? "Don't you like it?" I asked, biting my lip. Jonah rubbed at his eyes with one hand. When he looked up at me, his eyes were shining. He pulled me to him and kissed the top of my head. "I love it," he choked out with a cracking voice. I breathed a sigh of relief, but just as I was starting to relax, he handed me my present. I looked down at the small black velvet box in my hand. Oh no… “I hope you don’t think that it’s too soon,” he said shyly. Oh no…This can’t be happening… My hands trembled as I opened the lid and revealed an exquisite diamond solitaire ring. It was really happening. The breath left my body as Jonah got down on one knee. Don’t do this…Don’t do this… "Becca," he said as he took my hand. "Would you do me the honor of marrying me?" I could hear my heart pounding in my chest as I looked down at him. He was asking me to marry him. Jonah actually wanted me to be his wife. Is this what I wanted? Beyond Jonah, in the shadows near the wall, Alastor stared at me. Alastor, tell me what to do. "That, I cannot do, my love." Alastor, please... His blue eyes glittered in the dim light, "My love, I only want for your happiness as I have said many times. I want you to do whatever makes you happy." I love you... "You will always be my very heart and soul," Alastor replied. I looked down at Jonah's handsome face. He always made me smile. I could be happy with him, the normal type of happy, and that wouldn’t be so bad. I took a deep breath, "Yes, Jonah, I will marry you." Jonah was kissing me and lifting me off my feet in a joyous embrace. As he swung me around, I saw the Christmas tree looking magical, Dad smiling through the happy tears, and Alastor's sad and resigned face. Haunted - Spiritus Series Book Two Alastor came at me then, forcing me back against the wall. He was so solid that I could feel his weight against me. I could feel his frozen breath on my face….He ran his hand up my arm, over my shoulder, and rested at the base of my throat. His blue eyes glittered dangerously. With the publication of Spiritus, Dana Michelle Burnett created ghostly romance in a small town.
