he lawyers at the Milwaukee-based personal injury firm Murphy & Prachthauser have represented people injured through the negligence of others for more than 30 years. In that time, they have become known for the thoroughness and dedication of their practice. “We get a great deal of satisfaction out of doing the hard work,” says Don Prachthauser. “Some lawyers focus on volume, but I’m glad to be among those law firms that do it the right way, rather than taking short cuts.” This strategy has proved beneficial for the firm, as Murphy & Prachthauser has been ranked Tier 1 in Milwaukee for plaintiffs’ personal injury litigation by U.S. News – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” every year since 2010. In addition, Prachthauser, who has been included in The Best Lawyers in America since 1995, was recently named as Best Lawyers’ 2013 Lawyer of the Year in Milwaukee for plaintiffs’ personal injury litigation. “The respect of one’s peers is heartwarming and certainly not to be taken for granted, but I have long since realized that when I’ve been fortunate enough to have had success in the courtroom, it’s because of the team of lawyers whom I’ve been associated with,” says Prachthauser, who is also a past-president of the Wisconsin Association for Justice and a member of the invitation-only American College of Trial Lawyers and International Society of

Barristers. “In my opinion, this isn’t a profession where someone can do it as a lone gunslinger.” Prachthauser is joined at the firm by lawyers Kevin Kukor, Mark Baus, Thadd Llaurado, Keith Stachowiak, and Joe Zimmermann. These six attorneys form a close-knit group that have now been practicing together for nearly three decades. Their collective experience has prompted judges, doctors, lawyers, and former clients to refer their families and friends to the firm. “We view these referrals as a vote of confidence in our strong group of lawyers,” Prachthauser says. “We’re proud to have a good team of people here with a variety of complementary talents, all working toward the shared goal of helping to improve the lives of our clients.”

It’s inevitable—at some point in your life, you’re going to need a lawyer, and you
won’t always be able to forecast when that need will arise. Finding an advocate in whom you can place your trust—particularly during times of strain or duress—can be a particularly daunting task. For most of us, the choice must be made quickly and decisively, and large sums of money are potentially on the line. As when choosing a doctor, we place an immense amount of responsibility in the counsel we hire to represent us. In our search for the highest quality advocate, we expect to be treated fairly, for our grievances to be heard, and for our lawyers to take on our case as if it were their own. Best Lawyers is proud to be the oldest legal peer-review organization in the United States. Since 1983, lawyers have been nominating and voting on their colleagues, culminating in what is currently the 20th edition of The Best Lawyers in America, from which this directory has been culled. The 2014 edition includes 50,834 attorneys in 134 practice areas, covering all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and inclusion is based on more than 4.9 million detailed evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers. A lot has changed in the last three decades.
We now have myriad tools at our disposal, but has it gotten any easier to find a lawyer? No one is allowed to buy his or her way into Best Lawyers, so when you search for representation in this guide or on BestLawyers.com, you are certain to find only the most highly regarded advocates in their chosen field. Lawyers must be re-nominated every year, thus ensuring that those listed are still considered the most esteemed in the profession. As a result, we congratulate those lawyers who have earned a place in this year’s guide and offer special recognition to the select few who have been honored for 30 years by highlighting their names in red throughout this publication. There have been other improvements to the magazine as well. This year, to make your search even more useful, we have broken out the state of Wisconsin by practice area and also by metropolitan region. Whether you are in Madison or Milwaukee, you are sure to find the best legal counsel available here. We are also pleased to announce the 2014 recipients of the “Lawyer of the Year” award. Only one lawyer per practice area per metropolitan zone is granted this distinction, based on the highest peer ratings received. Turn to page 8 to find out more. We are also thrilled to unveil our new, fully
interactive digital edition, truly putting the power to make an informed decision at your fingertips. Every lawyer and law firm with an online profile on BestLawyers.com is hyperlinked within these pages and highlighted in blue. Simply scan the QR code on page 3 with your smartphone or go to the Regional Publications section of BestLawyers.com to access the fully responsive digital edition. It’s available anytime, anywhere—for free, all year long. Our aim is to quickly connect you to the Best Lawyer that best suits your needs. Whether in print or online, our publication strives to put you in touch with the legal champions in your hometown who seek justice for their fellow citizens each and every day. Because it takes a community to recognize the best, if you know an outstanding attorney who isn’t listed here, do not hesitate to go online to BestLawyers.com and nominate him or her today.

METHODOLOGY Inclusion in Best Lawyers is based entirely on peer-review. The methodology is designed to capture, as accurately as possible, the consensus opinion of leading lawyers about the professional abilities of their colleagues within the same geographical area and legal practice area.
Best Lawyers employs a sophisticated, conscientious, rational, and transparent survey process designed to elicit meaningful and substantive evaluations of the quality of legal services. Our belief has always been that the quality of a peer-review survey is directly related to the quality of its voting pool.

INCLUSION
ANNOUNCEMENT
Nominations are open to anyone. Our primary sources for nominations: clients, other lawyers & marketing teams.
Ballots are generated and distributed to listed lawyers. They are designed based on the voter’s practice area(s) and geographic region.
Best Lawyers asks voters the question: “If you were unable to take a case yourself, how likely would you be to refer it to this nominee?” Nominees are given a 1 -5 rating, with room to leave additional comments.
The Best Lawyers editorial staff reviews the votes and comments. Selected lawyers are checked against state bar association sanction lists to make sure they are in good standing with the ethics committee of their state bar.
Listed lawyers are notified of inclusion and the list is released to the public.
To submit nominations, please visit www.bestlawyers.com/ Admin/Nomination.aspx or email nominations@bestlawyers.com. For additional information concerning nominations, please contact us at info@bestlawyers.com.

30
YEARS
with Robert J. Loots of von Briesen & Roper, S.C., Milwaukee, listed in The Best Lawyers in America for 30 years that represented mostly closely held businesses. This involved dealing with a broad variety of business law issues while also providing estate planning for the owners and their successors. What would you say is the most rewarding aspect of practicing in your area of law? The most rewarding aspect of practicing law in both these areas is the opportunity to develop close personal relationships with the families of the business clients while also providing guidance in What interested you about going their estate planning. into your particular area of law? What has been the key to I was attracted by the opportunity to practice corporate law—in addition your success? Perhaps the key to whatever success I have enjoyed to estate planning—in a small firm
has been responding promptly and placing the needs of the client first without concern for my personal needs or time constraints. How has the legal industry in your field changed in the last 30 years? The greatest change has been the continual changing of the tax laws and the increasing necessity of specialization. What does being included in Best Lawyers for 30 years mean to you? Being recognized by my peers as a lawyer with expertise in their area of practice, through being named in Best Lawyers from the age of 52 continuing throughout 30 years has been a singular honor.
What is one piece of advice you would give to new attorneys? One piece of advice I might give to a new attorney would be to strive to put yourself in the client’s position and provide the best advice you can to achieve his goals with the greatest integrity possible. What is the biggest obstacle you see for your practice area in the next 30 years? The greatest obstacle for both the business and estate planning areas over the next 30 years is the impact of increasing technology and the erosion of the importance of developing and maintaining personal relationships.
with Richard S. Gallagher of Foley & Lardner LLP, Milwaukee, listed in The Best Lawyers in America for 30 years
What interested you about going into your particular area of law? My choice of practice area was simply a matter of serendipity. I returned from military service in Vietnam at almost the exact moment of the passage of the Tax
Reform Act of 1969, which radically changed not only corporate tax law but also the law of nonprofit organizations. The law firm asked me to read it and summarize it and after I had done so I was the firm and state expert because no one else had. Life was simpler in those days! Since people of wealth tended to be the ones who generously funded charities, I found myself in the estate planning business, and that allowed me to understand the challenges of family companies and the tax and personal issues associated with family company ownership. What has been the key to your success? I suppose I was driven to this practice by a number of personal circumstances: I was attracted to the practice of law,
not by money, but by the fact that I was interested in being an active member of my community without having to starve to death. Foley & Lardner LLP and a receptive and open community like Milwaukee permitted me to do that. What is one example of a case/ matter you are particularly proud of? I don’t know that one particular case stands out in my mind, and in any event the nature of my practice area is such that I couldn’t talk about it publicly if I could, but I can say that I have been blessed with a client base that has consisted of incredibly bright and interesting people who have allowed me to share their lives and interests. How has the legal industry in your field changed in the last
30 years? Frankly, I would find it difficult to advise a young attorney today—law firms are larger and less personal than they were when I graduated from law school nearly fifty years ago. I think the training is good for nearly every walk of life, but it is a long and expensive road. There is, as my father used to tell me, always room at the top, and that certainly ought to be the goal of anyone who is motivated enough to accomplish graduation from law school. What does being included in Best Lawyers for 30 years mean to you? Clients do notice it and it is certainly an honor to have been selected for so many years in a row. I am humbled by, and grateful for, the recognition.

MILWA UK E E When Linda Benfield graduated from law school in 1985, natural resources law was in its infancy. But the chance to get involved in an area of the law that was still very much on the ground floor was appealing, so Benfield dove in head first, moving to Washington, D.C. right after law school, and soon afterward to Wisconsin, where she joined Foley & Lardner’s environmental regulation group and eventually became its chair. “It was a really exciting time to start practicing law in an area where I felt I could make a real impact,” she says. As the years passed, Benfield found that the things that initially drew her in—figuring out how environmental statutes would interplay with other laws and how public policy intersects with the statutes—are what have kept her in the practice. Today, she’s the managing partner of the firm’s Milwaukee office, though her work on behalf of industry (everything from helping energy developers acquire permits to defending against government action) continues. “My work touches every kind of law,” says Benfield. “The legal issues are complex and I’ve always really enjoyed the problemsolving aspect and finding the best path to resolution.” Not to mention that the work is just plain fun. “Every day brings something different,” says Benfield, a fellow of the American College of Environmental Lawyers and a fellow of the Wisconsin Law Foundation. “It’s never boring.”
MAD IS O N Murphy Desmond attorney William Rameker was serving in Vietnam when he got his first taste of what a career in law might be like. Back then, he says, the JAG Corps didn’t handle court martials—the proceedings were handed to officers. “So I might be asked to defend or prosecute someone who went AWOL, or sit on a judges’ panel,” says Rameker, a 41-year law veteran who has spent the entirety of his career in the bankruptcy/reorganization arena. “There were two lawyers in our unit as well, and after getting to know them, I decided to take the LSAT.” But he didn’t wait until returning stateside. “I took the test at a school desk in Saigon with a .45 in my lap,” Rameker recalls. Today, Rameker, who has acted as a state court receiver and is in his 38th year as a bankruptcy court trustee, is known as being a go-to lawyer for both creditors and debtors in complex bankruptcy and reorganization proceedings across a broad spectrum of industries. And he recently reached the pinnacle: one of his cases—dealing with how individual retirement accounts are inherited by debtors in bankruptcy proceedings—went before the United States Supreme Court. For Rameker, the practice area is richly textured and complex, and he gets as much joy today out of helping individuals and businesses turn their financial lives around as he did when he was just starting out. “I’m part lawyer, part psychologist,” says the well-credentialed Rameker, who is active in countless associations and memberships. “There’s a lot of satisfaction in helping people get a fresh start.”

For example, from the 1950s through the 1990s, we had an exceptionally strong labor practice,” he says. “But since many union-dominated manufacturing jobs have moved out of state, our employment law attorneys now focus on general employment law matters, benefits, and trade secrets in addition to labor issues. Likewise, M&A for large public companies was also a predominant area for us, but in recent years we’ve been assisting more privately-held firms with their business, M&A, and tax needs.” Michael Best is taking its Midwest roots national as the firm has grown in markets outside of the state, with offices in Chicago, Salt Lake City, and Washington, D.C., where the firm opened in 2013. Krutz notes, “Our IP practice and our growing energy practice meant that it made sense for us to be geographically close to agencies such as the United States Patent & Trademark Office and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.” At the end of the day, Michael Best attorneys remain dedicated to giving time to the communities they serve. Krutz says the firm’s pro bono work and its sense of volunteerism runs deep. “The emphasis on community involvement is something that will never change,” he says.

Partnering for your success Reinhart attorneys are recipients of numerous prestigious honors—including 85 who are included in the 2014 edition of The Best Lawyers in America, seven of whom were named Best Lawyers “Lawyers of the Year.” Chambers USA recognizes 19 Reinhart attorneys for their skillful representation and 64 Reinhart attorneys are recognized by Wisconsin Super Lawyers. We are proud of these and other accolades which show evidence of our legal skills and reputation among our clients and peers, but we don’t measure our success by them. We measure our success by the partnerships we develop with our clients. Reinhart lawyers know that it takes more than legal talent and knowledge to earn your trust. It takes a passion for your business and a mindset for serving as responsive, creative advisors while providing sound legal counsel. Visit reinhartlaw.com/testimonials to read representative comments from our clients, or call us at 800-553-6214 to speak with one of our attorneys.
