WELCOME - WILLKOMMEN Welcome to the 21st Berlin & Beyond Film Festival! Join us for three full days and nights at San Francisco’s iconic Castro Theatre (Feb. 3-5), three evenings at the Goethe-Institut in Downtown (Feb. 6-8), and DocDay at Oakland’s Pro Arts Gallery (Feb. 4), with our vivid selection of films, crossing various cultures, experiences, and histories. As we will have several screenings with film talents present, we invite you to stay behind for engaging post-film Q&As. Since 1996, Berlin & Beyond Film Festival has been North America’s leading annual showcase, dedicated to the cinematic movements of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Each year, we roll out the red carpet to welcome top films and talents of the year from this region, from major box office hits to award winners, to small productions and discoveries from up-and-coming filmmakers. Our Opening Night Film is the International Premiere of Scrappin’, the entertaining family drama and feature debut from Max Zähle, whose short film Raju was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Berlin & Beyond Audience Award in 2011.

A major highlight of this year’s festival are films by and about women. The controversial drama 24 Weeks deals with late abortion. We are proud to present to the film’s lead actress, Julia Jentsch, the Spotlight Award in Acting, celebrating her on-going career in this dynamic field. Likewise, we are proud to honor the multitalented actress, director, and screenwriter Maria Schrader with our inaugural Career Achievement Award, celebrating her wide-ranging career. Her latest directorial work, the timely historical drama and Austria’s Oscar entry, Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe, is our Centerpiece. Fukushima, mon Amour, veteran filmmaker Doris Dörrie’s poignant black-andwhite drama shot entirely in Japan, is our Castro Closing Night Film. It follows two very different women, both trapped by their past.

We are excited to present the World Premiere of Jan Tenhaven’s documentary Silicon Valley Revolution, with forgotten stories of the pioneers of the personal computer, filmed here in the Bay Area. Several films were adapted from novels and short stories into bold and captivating cinematic stories: Dark Fortune (Dir. Stefan Haupt), Heidi (Dir. Alain Gsponer), Original Bliss (Dir. Sven Taddicken), Too Hard to Handle (Dir. Laura Lackmann), and Hanna’s Sleeping Dogs (Dir. Andreas Gruber), which is the runner-up winner of our 2016-2017 Youth 4 German Cinema Award. We are grateful for the empowering support of our sponsors, partners, and friends from near and far, whose steadfast generosity makes this festival possible. Likewise, we extend our gratitude to our hardworking and dedicated festival team, volunteers, and collaborators. Special thanks to the filmmakers and industry professionals for sharing their cinematic works with us. We are most grateful to you, the festivalgoers, for attending our festival. Get ready to join us for a cinematic adventure! Thanks! Vielen Dank! to keep the family business alive. Mirko Talhammer (Lucas Gregorowicz) is beside himself when two strangers show up at his posh insurance office to remind him of where he comes from: a provincial scrapyard, where careers do not count and other things are more important, such as scrapping, family, and every once in a while, a good, old-fashioned fist fight. Mirko thought he had left all that behind, but his father has left unfinished business before he died and left Mirko the run-down scrapyard, along with his brother Letscho (Frederick Lau, Victoria), who is still upset that Mirko deserted the clan. Faced with financial uncertainties, the brothers realize that the Talhammers can only have a future if they can pull themselves together and fulfill their father’s last wish: to rob a train filled with valuable copper. Austria’s Official Entry to the 2017 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. Maria Schrader’s drama Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe episodically tells the story of Austrian writer Stefan Zweig and his life in exile between 1936-42. Having been driven into emigration at the peak of his worldwide fame, Stefan Zweig falls into despair at the sight of Europe’s downfall, which he had anticipated early on. It’s the story of a refugee, a tale of losing one’s homeland, and of the search for a new one. Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, New York, Petrópolis are four stations of an expatriate unable to find peace. Despite the generous welcome and the overwhelming opulence of tropical vegetation he encounters, nothing can replace his homeland. Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe is a visually stunning historic picture about a great artist and, at the same time, a film about a time in which Europe was coming apart. Premiered at the 2016 Locarno Film Festival in the Piazza Grande section.

Sun. Feb. 5, 2017 8:30 p.m. Castro Theatre, San Francisco San Francisco Premiere In Person: Moshe Cohen 104 mins. Germany (2016). DCP. English, German & Japanese w/ English subtitles. Director/Screenwriter: Doris Dörrie Starring: Rosalie Thomass, Kaori Momoi, Moshe Cohen, Nami Kamata Cinematography: Hanno Lentz Producers: Harald Kügler, Molly von Fürstenberg World Sales: The Match Factory Winner of various international awards, including the Audience Award Runnerup at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival and the Golden Duke Best Actor award for both Karoi Momoi and Rosalie Thomass at the 2016 Odessa International Film Festival in Ukraine.

Young German woman Marie escapes to Fukushima to change her life. Working with the organization Clowns4Help, she hopes to bring joy to survivors of the 2011 disaster, some of whom still live in emergency shelters. Marie soon realizes that she is absolutely unsuited to the task of making tragedy less wearisome. Instead of running away, Marie decides to stay with cantankerous old Satomi, the last geisha in Fukushima, who of her own accord has decided to return to her ruined house in the formerly radioactive Exclusion Zone. Two women who couldn't be more different, but who – each in her own way – are trapped in the past and must learn to liberate themselves from guilt and the burden of memory. A universal and poetic tale about life and letting go from acclaimed writer-director Doris Dörrie (Cherry Blossoms, Berlin & Beyond Opening Night 2009, Enlightenment Guaranteed, Men). Fukushima, mon Amour is Doris Dörrie’s first feature film to be shot entirely in Japan and in breathtaking black and white.

Dark Fortune director Stefan Haupt (Berlin & Beyond alum: How About Love, The Circle) opens up a spectrum of emotion in this sensitive new feature, based on the novel by Lukas Hartmann. A country drive. A solar eclipse. In an instant, a child’s world is destroyed. Eight-year old Yves (newcomer Noé Ricklin) is the sole survivor of a highway accident that kills his entire family. In a hospital back in Zurich, Yves lapses into a profoundly troubled state: he 20

can neither grieve nor acknowledge his own pain. Child psychologist Eliane (Eleni Haupt), a veteran clinician, refuses to weep over the broken boy: she gives him space, care, and company. Though Eliane has family problems of her own—her teenage daughters are constantly at odds with each other and with her—Yves grows ever larger in her life. As Eliane becomes the closest thing Yves has to a friend, a parent, or an assurance that life goes on, she tentatively brings him into her own family. But when Yves’ aunt and grandmother close in, Eliane cannot shake the feeling that they do not have Yves’ best interests at heart—and that the wreck that orphaned him might not have been an accident. Sharply photographed in crisp, autumnal colors by Tobias Dengler, Dark Fortune is shot through with a quiet mystery and awe at the darkness in our hearts and souls—and the light that can eclipse it. ― Martin Schwartz Swiss Window is presented in cooperation with the Consulate General of Switzerland in San Francisco.

WHERE THE WOODS END

Tue. Feb. 7, 2017 5:00 p.m. Goethe-Institut, San Francisco Déjà vu: German film schools ruled the Foreign Language categories of The Academy’s 43rd Student Academy Awards® in 2016. As in 2015, works from German film schools won three medals again: the gold and silver in the Foreign Narrative category and the very first medal of the newly created Foreign Animation category. This is a vivid example of the promise of German cinema’s future. Another great example links to the director of this year’s Berlin & Beyond Opening Night Film: Max Zähle’s short film Raju won the 2011 Student Academy Award – Foreign Narrative Bronze, and in 2012, it was nominated for the Academy Award in the Live Action Short category. Now, we are thrilled to celebrate the International Premiere of his first cinema feature film, Scrappin'. ― Sophoan Sorn

A beautiful Oud. They collect scrap metal to earn the money and must find out that their mother’s fear was for a good reason. But as strong birds will always fly, the two boys become one to overcome their trauma.

Winner of the 2016 Student Academy Award – Foreign Narrative Silver. Elke, a young police officer, and her colleague Armin are on patrol close to the Czech border. During a routine stop and search operation a young Czech man resists their police orders and in the heat of the moment gets shot by Elke. After a summer away at camp, Phil returns home to find that his mother and twin sister are not speaking to each another. Not willing to confront his family during the last days of the summer holidays, Phil escapes to hang out with his best friend, Kat, eating ice cream and playing dressup. As the school year begins, a new student arrives – the handsome and mysterious Nicholas. Smitten, Phil watches his crush as he runs around the track after school, and is thrilled when Nicholas returns his feelings. However, when first love’s volatility comes to light, Phil realizes he must deal with the problems of his past, in order to deal with the issues of his present.

The life and faith of Catholic prison chaplain Jakob Voelz is fundamentally troubled when his best friend and fellow priest Dominik Bertram is taken in custody under suspicion of sexual abuse. Jakob would be more than happy to believe Dominik is innocent. Yet, what Jakob is beginning to suspect becomes a crucial test for his faith and his selfconception as a priest: There is a truth we welcome and there is a truth we fear, about which we tend to fall silent. Jakob begins to turn against that silence within the church, in order to discover the truth.

FRANTZ

Sun. Feb. 5, 2017 3:30 p.m. Castro Theatre, San Francisco San Francisco Premiere 113 mins. France, Germany (2016). DCP. French & German w/ English subtitles. Director/Screenwriter: François Ozon Starring: Pierre Niney, Paula Beer, Ernst Stötzner, Marie Gruber Cinematography: Pascal Marti Producers: Eric Altmayer, Nicolas Altmayer U.S. Distributor: Music Box Films Lead actress Paula Beer was honored with the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best New Talent at the 2016 Venice International Film Festival in Italy. Official Selection in the Spotlight section of the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

François Ozon is one of the most prolific directors in French cinema, yet his work never ceases to surprise. His latest stylistic left-turn is a largely black-and-white period piece, loosely adapted from the 1932 Ernst Lubitsch drama Broken Lullaby. When the film begins, young German Anna (Paula Beer) is still grieving the death of her soldier fiancé, Frantz. Living a somber existence with Frantz’s equally bereft parents, Anna is surprised to find that a mysterious stranger has been visiting Frantz’s grave. This turns out to be Adrien (Pierre Niney), a Frenchman who was once close friends with Frantz when they both lived in Paris. Though hesitant at first, Anna and Frantz’s parents eventually warm to Adrien. Yet nothing in this intricately plotted film is quite what it seems, and Anna must take it upon herself to discover more about Adrien’s past and come to terms with her own grief. Adding a new degree of visual refinement and emotional resonance to Ozon’s filmography, Frantz is a skillfully executed and intensely moving cinematic experience. ― Philadelphia Film Festival

Germany in the 1950s: After World War II, the German government is still full of former Nazis in powerful political and judicial positions. Amidst this rotten structure, Hessian Solicitor General Fritz Bauer tries to bring a stop to the frequent cover-ups of Nazi crimes. However, it remains a lonesome struggle. The Secret Service is openly working against him. Despite the odds, Fritz Bauer plans his coup: The arrest of former SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) Adolf Eichmann, who had fled to Argentina after the war in 1945. However, after Eichmann’s successful capture, Fritz Bauer does not cease to track down other exalted politicians of state. His next target is the closest confident of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.

A tragicomedy about love, life and therapy in Berlin - like a Woody Allen in high spirits. 30-year-old Karo seems to lead a perfect hipster life: totally extroverted, funky clothes, freaky friends, and a job in one of the city’s most trendy media companies. But Karo’s inner life is far beyond the usual extroverted Berlin city hipster attitudes: Karo’s life seems to happen between the fatal extremes of impatience, deep sadness and emotional excess, only to be interrupted by devasting panic attacks. Completely out of control, she loses her job, her friends and her boyfriend. Despite seeking therapy, her overeagerness to become the all-perfect patient plunges her into an even deeper mess. More and more forced into severe depressions by the fear of being alone, Karo has to admit that solving problems isn’t that easy, especially if her own twisted life represents the problem!

Helene Brindel’s childless marriage shows no signs of harmony, and the somber woman has also lost her faith in God. “Where are You?” she asks from behind a veil of melancholy that separates her from the real world of relative luxury in a quiet suburban neighborhood. Liberation from the emotional trap of gloomy thoughts and insomnia appears one day in the person of charismatic psychologist Eduard Gluck, a self-assured and charming speaker for “new cybernetics,” which claims the ability to control reality with the mind and the possibility of “reprogramming oneself.” But a surprising secret hides behind his elegantly formulated guidelines for a lifestyle whose self-centeredness Gluck tries to conceal with mild irony. Even viewers who know their filmographies well will be surprised by Martina Gedeck (The Lives of Others), Ulrich Tukur (The White Ribbon), and Johannes Krisch (Revanche) as the stars of this uncommon psychological romance, a highly original adaptation of the novel of the same name by renowned Scottish writer A. L. Kennedy. ― Karel Och, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

108 mins. USA, Germany (2016). DVD and BD. English Eva Hesse (1936-1970) is one of America’s foremost postwar artists. Her pioneering sculptures, using latex, fiberglass, and plastics, helped establish the post-minimalist movement. Dying of a brain tumor at age 34, she had a mere decade-long career that, despite its brevity, is dense with complex, intriguing works that defy easy categorization. This documentary features her correspondence with close friend and mentor Sol LeWitt, along with interviews with artists Richard Serra, Robert Mangold, and Dan Graham, who recall her passionate, ambitious, tenacious personality. The documentary also captures the psychic struggles of an artist who, in the downtown New York art scene of the 1960s, was one of the few women to make work that was taken seriously in a field dominated by male pop artists.

85 mins. Germany (2016). BD. German w/ English subtitles.  When the almost retired father regularly flies to Thailand to enjoy the company of women his daughter’s age, this is understandably embarrassing to the latter. But things are getting serious now: Dieter has been in a stable relationship for three years with Tukta, who calls long distance every morning to wake up the loner and passionate amateur farmer. The wedding is looming. Is this love, as Dieter has persuaded himself? Or more of a “trade”, as his daughter Carolin, the director, accuses him? With some courage she faces not only her father’s unfulfilled desires and fears of being lonely in old age but also her own ambivalent feelings. ― Lars Meyer, DOK Leipzig

86 mins. Germany, Netherlands, Cuba (2016). BD. Spanish, Dutch, English w/ English subtitles. Once a year, two plastic surgeons from Holland and Belgium fly to Havana to perform surgery on five Cuban transgender persons. The surgeons are invited by Mariela Castro, daughter of the President and head of the new state program for transgender care. Castro organizes this as a modern completion of the socialist revolution of 1959 because, in her words, it is all about emancipation and self-realization. "Homophobia no, socialismo si!" is the official slogan. The state helps transgender people with therapy, hormones, surgery and a new identity. Is Cuba changing into a safe haven for trans people? For more than one year, filmmakers Daniel Abma and Alex Bakker follow the three main characters Odette, Juani and Malú and show how they deal with the reality of being transgender in Cuba.

WORLD PREMIERE

This documentary tells the forgotten stories of some of the most influential personal computer pioneers in the San Francisco Bay Area. In the late 1960s, big mainframe computers owned by large corporations and the government were seen as tools of control. The Hippie movement and the anti-Vietnam war protests served as a hotbed for a revolutionary idea: creating an affordable home computer to be used by ordinary people – as a counterbalance to Big Brother. The rest is history, but what has happened to the early ideals and the initial ethos of free sharing? As one of the visionaries puts it: “It’s true that what I helped to create is today’s establishment. That’s what I was trying to get rid of: the establishment.”
