Prost! Paulaner Brauhaus rings in the summer

very year when the weather heats up, families flock to Paulaner Brauhaus to lounge in the restaurant’s expansive beer garden. Located right next to the Kempinski Hotel, this Liangma Qiao fixture is known for its hearty Bavarian-style fare. Vegetarians, beware; the menu has a distinct focus on meat, and lots of it. Among Paulaner’s specialties are its generous sausage and butcher platters (RMB 178-198), which can be easily shared by younger carnivores. Other highlights include pork knuckle (RMB 105/198), Wiener schnitzel (or breaded veal escalope, RMB 178), and apple strudel (RMB 68). For picky eaters, there’s a German kids’ menu with dishes like schnitzel (RMB 75) and crispy Frankfurter sausage (RMB 45). Grownups shouldn’t miss out on Paulaner’s house beers, which are available in three sizes (glass, half liter, and liter for RMB 48/66/118) and conceived by a real live German brewmaster. The beer garden is open from April to September, but the party continues into October, when Paulaner pulls out all the stops for Oktoberfest. Sijia Chen
