Sharee’s hair was too flat, so Cao Chong added layers for texture. Then, he wrapped her hair into large rollers and blowdried it out for some extra oomph.

ouston, Texas native Sharee Hebert has lived in Beijing for a total of eight years. She teaches secondary school math at Yew Chung International School of Beijing. Her husband, Daniel Hebert, is a brewer and the co-founder of Slow Boat Brewery. In late May, they welcomed a daughter called Lorelai born at Beijing HarMoniCare Women and Children’s Hospital. One rainy afternoon, Sharee brought her along to Xiaomi Salon for some much-needed pampering. Located at Solana, Xiaomi also features a cafe with English-language children’s books and ceramic mugs for kids to paint. As editors, photographers, and salon staff took turns fussing over Lorelai, Sharee consulted with Training Director Cao Chong, Senior Technician Carmen Zhang, and freelance Makeup Artist Lucas Song about a new look. Sharee had dyed her hair two weeks before with L’Oréal highlights from a box. She usually gets her hair cut every three to four months and trims off one to two inches. Her only request was to keep her hair longer than shoulder length. By the end, even the pouring rain couldn’t dampen her new look. Sijia Chen

Senior Technician Carmen Zhang corrected the unevenness of Sharee’s highlights by using a combination of three dyes by L’Oréal: light blonde, dark blonde, and a chestnut shade that was closer to Sharee’s natural hair color. Zhang used the foil method to create highlights.

Sharee normally uses Mary Kay products from the US; she explained that the whitening foundations sold in China tend to wash her out. To start, Makeup Artist Lucas Song applied a cream foundation, got Sharee to tilt her head back, and gently laid a wet tissue over her face. This moisturizes the skin and gives the foundation a dewy effect. He followed up with a terra cotta eyeshadow over the eyelids and a dark brown eyeshadow closer to the lashline (both from MAC’s professional line). Song then used a thin brush to apply a consumer-grade black shade for definition. For color, he used a pinkish blush on Sharee’s cheekbones and a mix of lip colors from MAC’s professional line. Lastly, Song defined her lips further with a combination eyeshadow and lipgloss pencil. August 2013
