Brown’s leadership was espe cially felt in the early days of CO VID-19 when the virus was first starting to make news. The owner of a Kingston Road flower shop was subjected to a racist tirade linking COVID to China. Brown stepped in to offer his support to the owners of the Flower Centre, Andy Sue and Wing Ye, after the incident by encouraging others to shop at the store and condemning the racism on behalf of all other lo cal business owners.

We already know that social isolation is of grave concern in the

The Ontario health care system is in crisis, with long wait times to access care, burnt-out staff leaving the sector, and units or even whole hospitals closing for hours, days, or even weeks at a time.

Staffing levels are too low to al low the healthcare system we rely on to function normally. Our own Michael Garron hospital recently warned community members that they are “seeing higher than usual patient volumes”, and asked people to consider other forms of care, such as their “virtual emergency department”.Onetragic side-effect of the cri sis in our hospitals is that Ontario older adults, and other members of our communities, are waiting for many days or even weeks in “al ternate level of care” (ALC) beds. They are waiting either to return home or waiting to move into a long-term care home.

On Wednesday Aug. 31, the On tario government of Premier Doug Ford passed the controversial new Bill 7, without allowing for proper, democratic, public consultation. This Bill was ostensibly created to help address the crisis in our hos pitals.Bill 7 would allow the Ford gov ernment to remove people from ALC beds and send them to a longterm care home.

Tell your family and friends about Bill 7 and what it could mean for themselves and their loved ones in the future.

Bill 7 has the potential to remove this dignity from far too many of our elders. It is not right.

You will have a chance to ask these and other questions at a pair of events in October. Please see our story on Page 2 for more on the Meet The Candidates sessions pre sented by the Beaches Interfaith Committee. Ask your questions and engage in respectful discus sion with the candidates.

Many individuals in ALC beds no longer need medical care in the hospital but cannot leave, either because there is no homecare avail able to them, or there is no bed for them in long-term care.

The government appears re luctant to first consider alternate paths to helping our overburdened healthcare system, including end ing artificial wage suppression for Ontario healthcare providers such as nurses, increasing funding to our homecare system, and address ing the ongoing COVID-19 pandem ic that is making many people, in cluding healthcare providers, sick.

We know that the majority of in dividuals wish to remain at home as they age; they want to age in place with dignity in their home and in the community of their choice, close to their friends and loved ones.

* This may seem minor to some, but it’s a question of basic fairness: Would you get rid of the no right turn restriction from south bound Victoria Park Avenue onto Bracken Avenue between 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Mondays to Fridays? This is the type of issue local coun cillors must deal with constantly and it would be interesting to see where candidates stand on it.

Prior to COVID-19, a high propor tion of care and socialization in LTC homes was being provided by these so-called “informal” care partners. We know that individuals living in long-term care often rely on vis its from friends and family mem bers. We do not want to exist, but we need to help the community and this is the best way to help at the moment.”

Nourish East End helps residents dealing with food insecurity

AS AN increasing number of people join the fight against To ronto’s food insecurity, more local non-profit food programs are being created. One,in particular, has stood the test of time. Formerly known as the Glen Rhodes Foodbank, Nourish East End has serviced residents of the Beach, Leslieville, and East York for more than 40 years. The program runs out of Glen Rhodes United Church on Gerrard Street East, which is now part of the East End United Regional Ministry with church buildings at Glen Rhodes and Eastminster on Danforth Av

In a display of kindness, they then donated the gift cards to Nourish East End where they were distributed to children at the food market. At least 20 per cent of all sales went to the food market as well as the World Wildlife Fund, according to their boys’ mother.

“It’s just a very sweet thing to think of...the initiative these young boys showed to help other kids that could be their neighbours,” said De Melo.Following the gesture, Swag Sis ters decided to match every gift card purchased by the brothers

with one of their own.

Last year, they ran a lemonade stand and felt a need to give back. The brothers “took money they made from this lemonade stand –that they worked so hard for – and purchased gift cards” from a local toy shop, Swag Sisters on Gerrard Street East, said De Melo.

During the height of the CO VID-19 pandemic, Nourish East End also provided a food hamper delivery program which increased the reach to 700 people in about 370 households.“Wewere all expecting [our cli ent base] to decline because of recovery in employment,” said Al exander. “But with the inflation, a lot of people who were on the cusp of being able to afford things again were all of a sudden not able to af fordUnlikeanything.”thehamper program, the food market allows families to shop

“The smile on these kids’ faces is so exciting,” De Melo said in re gards to the children who received Sebastian and Dominic’s gift.

Excluding Carlson, Alexander and Communications Specialist Emily De Melo, who are all compensated through a government grant, work ers at Nourish East End are there on a volunteer basis. About 40 per cent of these volunteers are also clients who were inspired to take part.Like the volunteers, other resi dents have been inspired to par ticipate in the program too. A survey conducted by Carlson revealed that about 90 per cent of their clients use the service weekly. The same survey, which consisted of approximately 40 people, also showed that 88 per cent of them rely solely on Nourish East End for their emergency food needs.

Toews’ book, All My Puny Sorrows, was adapted by Mi chael McGowan into a sad, but beautiful film about the effects of mental illness and suicide on a family. Sarah Gadon and Allison Pill give heartbreaking performances as troubled, but loving sisters.Atitle like Women Talk ing may leave a lot of people (OK, males) rolling their eyes, but there is room for all kinds of films. Hollywood has not been very open to women telling their stories. Not everyone wants to just see Top Gun or Spider-Man.

Women Talking played at the Toronto International Film Festival this month. The film brings together the creative energies of author Miriam Toews, filmmaker Sarah Polley and actor/producer Frances McDormand.

Winner of four Academy Awards, Frances McDor mand was born Cynthia Ann Smith in Illinois in 1957 to a single mother and adopted at eighteen months by Ca nadian parents, Vernon and Noreen McDormand.

Women Talking may well become a part of the Oscar conversation when it opens in theatres in December.

Looking back on a summer of amazing wildlife experiences

When Erik arrived with the kids, we found a perfect location with water not far away.Erik filmed while the girls and I opened the crate.

Photo above, Ann Brokelman and her granddaugh ters Lara, Cara, and Diana release an osprey back into wild earlier this summer. Photo at right, shows the doe and three fawns which Brokelman had earlier en countered in Scarborough.

I also knew that I’d prob ably never find out what happened to them, as the mother would likely move them out of the neighbour hood.Skip ahead to July 30, and I had pretty much given up hope of seeing the family again when Erle came in from walking the dog and told me the triplets were right next door!

He ended up walking out of the crate, turned around to shoot me a dirty look, and then took off. He quickly flew between some trees, on

I know COVID isn’t over, and I’m going to keep wear ing my mask when I go get my groceries (flu season isn’t that far away), but that doesn’t mean I can’t ap preciate the joy of walking, mask free, through the local parks, with a friend, and watching the monarch but terflies start their migration to TheMexico.simple joys have started to return to our city.

I’ve had a lot of amazing sight ings and wildlife encounters over the last few months, and today I wanted to share my top three moments:

flying back, side by side, to their mom. The small est fawn stayed close to its mom, content to watch, until the mom seemed to want to join the festivities and left it behind to chase the others around the yard.

Cathy and I realized that the doe might be trying to get the fawns to settle, so we decided to retreat to the house and give them their space.Sure enough, a few mo ments after we went inside, the three fawns settled down along the fence. The doe jumped into our yard and laid down at the back in theEvenshade.with the fawns being so much larger, the mom will, for a while yet, stay at a distance to keep them safe. Remember: if you find a fawn by itself, it’s very unlikely that it’s been abandoned. It’s much easier for the fawns to hide than it is for the mom, so she’ll leave the fawns alone, in a good hiding spot, for hours at aThetime.second highlight was releasing an osprey with my son Erik and my three granddaughters Lara, Cara, and Diana. Two other friends also joined us, Paul andShadesTerri. of Hope Wildlife Refuge asked if I could re lease a younger osprey last week for them, and Erik and the girls were conveniently free to join me.

When I arrived at our chosen location, I saw six ospreys, already in the sky, calling and circling the water looking for fish. This was ideal. There was no way to know the outcome but having other adults around to watch and learn from would be the best-case scenario. Osprey are usually only territorial around their own nests, so it was unlikely the other birds in the area would try to chase the new one away.

Some of you may have read my previous article about the birth of fawn triplets in my neighbours’ backyard, back on May 21, 2022. Now, even after a few months have gone by, I’m still in awe over that experi ence. While I hoped to see the whole family again one day, in the back of my mind I always knew that it was against the odds for all three fawns to survive; in a world full of cars, fences, predators and more, it’s hard enough for a single fawn to make it.

PHOTOS: TERRI MARTIN

is an avid birder and nature photographer naturephotosbyann.blogspot.ca

We all had a laugh as, when the crate first opened, the Osprey quickly shot one, and only one, of its wings outside.Slowly he brought his head out, then the other wing, and then a few tenta tive flaps that seemed like more stretches.

his way to the lake, before he disappeared from our sight. What a great experi ence for the girls!

The third highlight has been realizing that life is re ally getting back to normal.

We sat and watched for 15 minutes as the fawns were literally frolicking about. The two larger ones would zoom around the edges of the neighbour’s yard, jump over his garbage cans, disappear around the side of the house, and then come

PHOTO: ANN BROKELMAN

I flew out of bed, (yes I was sleeping in, again), called my neighbour Cathy to hurry over, and the two of us quietly watched out the backyard. Sure enough, we had a magnificent view from under the treehouse.
