Federal funding for rental units in local projects already under construction or built announced By Amarachi Amadike, Journalism Initiative Reporter

Local

THE FEDERAL government announced a $1.2 billion investment to build 2,644 rental homes in Toronto earlier this month. The funding, which comes courtesy of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Rental Construction Financing Initiative (RCFI), was announced on Nov. 14 and will be distributed to seven developments, including three in East Toronto, as fully repayable low-interest loans. With the recent reports of the federal government joining ongoing talks between Mayor Olivia Chow and Premier Doug Ford as part of the New Deal Working Group, the announcement appears to have come at a favourable time for Toronto Council.

As the city continues to seek funding for desperately needed affordable rental units, residents are hoping these low-interest loans will make a dent in the Toronto’s plan to create 65,000 new affordable units by 2030. Although the loans were described as funding for “new” projects, it appears some of the developments, including the 68 rental units in a building at 650 Kingston Rd. at Main Street, have already been constructed or are nearing completion. As of October 2022, the building at 650 Kingston Rd., which provides 19 affordable units, was almost fully occupied with “only three or four units stillavailableforrent”accordingtothe developer. Similarly, the building at 1555 Queen St. E. which is being developed by Toronto Community Hous-

ing Corporation (TCHC), Context and RioCan has already been fully financed “with no amendments or additions” to the TCHC portion of the building. “None of the funding is coming to TCHC,” said a TCHC spokesperson in response to a question from Beach Metro Community News. “The funding loan in question will go directly to our development partner, Context-RioCan for the funding of rental housing in the Market Building that will also be on the property.” Beach Metro Community News reached out to the developers of the buildings in question for information about the specifics of their allocated funds but got no response. Beach Metro Community News also reached out to TorontoDanforth Councillor Paula Fletcher and Beaches-East York Councillor

Brad Bradford for their thoughts on the federal loans, but did not receive a response before our press deadline. However, WoodGreen Community Services Vice-President, Mwarigha, was able to help shed some light as to why rental buildings that are already constructed or nearly completed might be part of the federal government’s loan funding announcement. “For you to get CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) money today, you have to have the front end of the investment – the downpayment money,” he explained. “You have to put your money in first in order for them to give you money to support your mortgage.” Mwarigha said that the buildings in question possibly don’t need conContinued on Page 4

COMMUNITY CENTRE 55’s annual Share A Christmas Program is now seeking community donations to help close to 1,000 local families in need during this holiday season. Now in its 42nd year, the Share A Christmas Program is collecting financial donations, gift card donations, and donations of new unwrapped toys for distribution in the community next month. As in the past three years, the program will be distributing grocery store gift cards to families instead of hampers of food which was done prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. To that end, monetary donations are most needed by Community Centre 55 as it uses the money to buy the grocery store gift cards. Financial donations can be made in person at Community Centre 55, 97 Main St., or online at www. centre55.com. Donations of new unwrapped toys and gift cards will be welcomed at Community Centre 55. Volunteers will also be needed to help pack a deliver the toy donations on Dec. 18 and 19. The sorting and packing of toys on Dec. 18 takes place from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Community Centre 55. On Dec. 19, volunteers are needed to help with a final packing and then to deliver the toys to the families registered to receive them. Delivery takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For info on volunteering for or making a donation to Share A Christmas, please contact Community Centre 55 at www.centre55. com or call 416-691-1113.

Representatives from the TMX Group (which operates the Toronto Stock Exchange) were on hand Wednesday, Nov, 22, to celebrate a recent $100,000 donation made to WoodGreen Community Services. WoodGreen used the funds to purchase a new van for its Meals on Wheels program. The van will also be used by WoodGreen’s Senior’s Care and Wellness Team to help local seniors in a number of ways including taking them to appointments and bringing them to programs. The celebration of the new van was held at WoodGreen’s seniors’ facility at 721 Broadview Ave. Those at the celebration included Cindy Bush, Chief Human Resources Officer at TMX Group; Anne Babcock, WoodGreen President and CEO; Dorothy Quon, WoodGreen Vice President, Community Care; Teresa Vasilopoulos, WoodGreen Executive Director, and members of the TMX Group’s Team Impact. The donation by TMX Group was towards WoodGreen’s Unmet Needs campaign which aims to help the many residents in the city who are not having their needs met. Among those are seniors and adults with disabilities who depend on the Meals for Wheels program not just for food, but also for the social and health benefits of having a regular volunteer come and deliver the meals to them. Last year, WoodGreen provided more than 55,000 meals to the doorsteps of its many clients.

Demovictions, design rules discussed at housing crisis meeting hosted by MPP By Amarachi Amadike, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

BEACHES-EAST YORK MPP Mary-Margaret McMahon hosted a Community Conversations event aimed at discussing ideas on how to tackle Toronto’s ongoing housing crisis on the night of National Housing Day. The meeting, Housing in Toronto: How Can We Help?, took place at Hope United Church at Danforth Avenue and Main Street on Nov. 21. Guests included vice president of WoodGreen Community Services Mwarigha; affordable housing advocate and consultant Joy Connelly; urban planner and economist Alex Boshoti; and representatives from Don Valley Legal Services Karly Wilson and Laura Anonen. The panelists shared a variety of opinions about what needs to be done in Toronto to fix the housing situation. “We know that this crisis is going to take every single tool in the toolbox, everyone working together,” said McMahon. “There’s no one golden ticket to solve it.” Panelist, Boshoti emphasized that the City of Toronto planning department’s extensive and costly requirements to develop buildings with a specific aesthetic is one hurdle getting in the way of developments being completed in a timely manner. “Buildings speak values,” said Boshoti. “But our building right now speaks to the

value that we care more about the people on the outside than we do about the people on the inside.” In agreement with this statement was WoodGreen’s Mwarigha who said that developments are slow to be completed because builders are trying to meet requirements that “we as the public have gotten used to as what’s important”. With housing developments now taking more than three years to get approved, Mwarigha believes that eight months could be shaved off this wait time if the technology utilized in this process was enhanced. However, he told Beach Metro Community News that the amount of public consultation meetings required before approval can be granted, which some complain about, needs to stay in place. “I don’t want to see us going through a process where there’s no consultation,” said Mwarigha. “I think that’s a slippery slope.” Mwarigha also condemned policies which he said have decoupled housing from social services and health. “That was the mistake we made at a policy level,” said Mwarigha. “Because now governments can choose to invest in one versus the

other.” Although there’s much work to do on the planning, development and building side of the housing crisis, other panelists, such as Wilson and Anonen, highlighted the urgent need to protect tenants from unjust evictions by landlords whose intentions are to increase rent once a renter leaves. The Don Valley Legal Services representatives’ call for vacancy control comes with the Rent Stabilization Act stuck in its first reading at Queen’s Park. Implementation of such a policy would go a long way to securing tenants’ rights but also provides protection for the current batch of affordable units in Toronto by preventing arbitrary increases in rental costs. “We need to stop the displacement of tenants from their homes, especially lower-income tenants,” said Anonen. “We see this happening through renovictions and demovictions across the city.” Currently, for every affordable home created in Toronto, 18 are lost partly due to a lack of vacancy control, she said. To make matters worse, said Liberal MPP McMahon, the Ontario government ap-

pears to be passing up on opportunities to leverage its own land for the building of affordable housing. “I keep bringing up 8 Dawes Road,” said McMahon. “It was a Metrolinx site and they sold it with no condition whatsoever for any affordable housing in the new development. We’re not looking in our own backyards at provincial lands that we can utilize.” The application for 8 Dawes Rd. proposes a 38-storey mixed-use building. This development will contain 399 dwelling units – 39 threebedroom, 109 two-bedroom, and 251 one-bedroom units. Following the community meeting, McMahon said that she will now take the resolutions discussed to Queen’s Park. However, many of those in attendance at Hope United Church expressed an understanding that their collective suggestions might fall on deaf ears when presented to the provincial government. – Amarachi Amadike is a Local Journalism Initiative Reporter for Beach Metro Community News. He said he believes that federal investment into the front end of development processes would be a better approach go a long way to controlling the rise in rental costs. “You have to remember, this [funding] is not cash,” said Mwarigha. “What the CMHC does is to go out and borrow money from the private market and then act as a guarantor.” “But instead of sitting in the middle and being an insurance broker, why don’t they (the federal government) take the money that we pay in taxes and give down payments to non-profits. Because how else am I, as a non-profit, going to have

that money that will allow me to start building?” In addition to the $1.2 billion allocated to Toronto rental constructions, the federal government also pledged a $1 billion fund to go towards affordable housing across the country. “Use that to give nonprofits like WoodGreen the money they need to build,” said Mwarigha. “If you give enough money upfront, it means they can take out smaller mortgages. If they take smaller mortgages, they can charge residents a lesser rent.” According to a federal press release, the RCFI is “on track to create more than 71,000 new rental housing units across Canada by 2027-28.” However, with some of the developments associ-

Rev. Rebecca Bridges inducted as pastor at St. Aidan’s church By Michael Van Dusen

“INDUCTION” IS a word most used for electromagnetic stove-top cooking. But induction is also a form of formal inauguration of a role. Synonyms would be “inauguration” or “investiture”. On Sunday Nov. 19, The Reverend Doctor Rebecca (Becky) Bridges was inducted as the Incumbent (pastor) of the Anglican Church of St. Aidan on Queen Street East, filling the position which had been formally vacant since the end of May, 2022. Becky came to St. Aidan’s from an Episcopal church in Birmingham Alabama, bringing a wealth of experience in different fields. She received a MA in English at Clemson University and a PhD. in in communication from Texas A&M and had been a tenured professor of communication studies at Stetson University in Florida. After teaching at Stetson for 12 years, she discerned a call to ministry. Meanwhile, and in addition to teaching, Becky had two girls, (now 20 and 15). The family moved to Austin, Texas where Becky entered the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest. Following ordi-

After working in this large congregation where there were three full-time priests as well as a retired priest, and many staff but where the responsibilities were carved up into distinct roles, Becky began looking for a situation where she had responsibility for everything is parish life:

liturgy, sacred music, education outreach, pastoral activities and administration, She had met Rev. Molly Finlay, the priest at St. John’s Norway, in 2022 during a study program in England. After Becky saw the job posting for St. Aidan’s (which was advertised in the United States and Britain as well as Canada) she applied then asked Molly if she knew of the parish and what she thought. Molly, gave a good report and Becky followed it up with an application for the position… Not coincidentally, Molly preached at Becky’s formal induction. In her email to the congregation before she arrived, Becky wrote, “Beyond my work life, I enjoy spending time with my daughters Olivia and Amelie and our dog, Athena, as well as with my significant other, Chuck Holmes. In my free time, I can often be found walking on trails in local natural areas or botanical gardens. In the past I have also enjoyed running and bicycling, and aspire to take up these activities again along the shore of Lake Ontario — and other trails I hope you may recommend. City’s affordable housing plan faces many challenges Amarachi Amadike Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

O

ver the past few years, major cities across Canada have consistently reported increases in the cost of living as post-pandemic inflation persists. Residents have now become well acquainted with conversations surrounding housing affordability. Toronto’s story, however, is a little more dire with one in five households currently living in core housing need – double the national average, according to city staff. Knowing the critical state of the city’s housing market, Olivia Chow – along with a promise to tackle the budget deficits through “moderate” tax increases – vowed to provide more affordable housing options during her successful campaign to become Mayor of Toronto last June. Since her arrival at Toronto City Hall, things have been moving. Although it is too early to pass judgement as to whether we are in fact moving in circles, there is not yet a reason to doubt Chow’s leadership. However, there is plenty of reason to be sceptical about expectations that Toronto’s newly updated

HousingTO 2020-2030 Action Plan, which has shifted from its original goal of providing 40,000 new affordable units by 2030 to 65,000 units in the same time frame, will fix the city’s current affordability issues. If successful, the new plan would have created 41,000 affordable units, 17,500 rent-controlled units, and 6,500 rent-geared-to-income units in the next seven years. But residents, like myself, are wondering if even this is enough to counter the years of sluggish behaviour that has seen Toronto fail to protect the affordable rental units it already had. According to affordable housing experts, even if Toronto supplies 65,000 more units as it is suggesting it can, there would still be a net loss of low-income rental units by 2030 assuming the current trend of a decline in affordable housing continues. Between 2016 and 2021, Toronto lost more than 73,000 affordable units that are priced under $1,000. The 2021 census reported 210,000 missing apartment units that rent for below $1,700 a month. This, according to HousingNowTO Volunteer Technical Lead Mark Richardson, makes 65,000 units about one-third of the actual affordable housing demand in Toronto. HousingNow TO is a grassroots organization calling for affordable housing on city lands.

“That’s a big gap to fill,” Richardson said in an address to city councillors. “If you’re going to create a lot of [rent-geared-toincome] units, which we support, someone’s going to have to pull up the money truck.” Inflation certainly played a role in some of the unit prices creeping above the affordable threshold, but the fact is 79 per cent of all rentals in Toronto are privately owned and these owners can further inflate the market by increasing the cost of rentals at a moment’s notice. For this reason, tackling Toronto’s lack of affordable housing units simply by pledging non-existent investments into construction of new affordable homes is a futile strategy. If we are losing affordable units at a more rapid pace than we are providing them, then even if Toronto Council is successful in its mission to approve 65,000 units, they would have made great strides in theory while remaining stagnant in reality. To be fair, Toronto does have a program in place to protect the current supply of affordable units. MURA (Multi-Unit Residential Acquisition), according to the city, is a “non-market, public and community-based rental acquisitions strategy to preserve the existing supply of affordable rental housing in the city.” This is good. Acquisi-

tion is a significantly cheaper solution to creating affordable housing than construction of new units. City officials have reported it would cost about $560,000 for each newly built affordable unit. This covers just the construction and doesn’t include any of the other fees and taxes. On the other hand, acquisition of a unit with aims of keeping it affordable can be achieved for as little as $150,000. Considering the potential MURA has shown creating 1,082 new affordable and supportive homes and the approval of 3,340 new affordable rental homes between the start of 2022 and June 2023, it is surprising the program isn’t receiving much more funding than it currently gets. Although the city says it is exploring this avenue while also constructing new units, very little investment has been allocated to MURA as can be proven by the $46 million which was aimed towards securing 260 affordable units. Focusing investments on programs like MURA would create a climate in Toronto for future investments into constructions of new affordable units. At the moment, we are attempting to fill the bathtub with water without plugging the drain. These efforts, through a long-term outlook, seem pointless.

Toronto’s current housing delivery framework is broken into three stages – pre-development; securing partners; and building. The second phase, securing partners, is where Toronto Council is expected to encounter its biggest hurdle as it entails partnerships with the provincial and federal governments. With 60,545 affordable units left to be built in the city’s housing plan, Toronto Council will miraculously have to come up with at least $33 billion in the next seven years. The current strategy to achieve this heavily relies on a $17 billion contribution from upper levels of government. Although Chow has managed to get the provincial government to discuss a new financial framework for Toronto – the federal government is also showing interest in joining the conversation as of late – Toronto’s tumultuous history with funding from other levels of government makes one wonder how quickly these affordable homes will be built. Toronto is currently facing a $1.5 billion budget shortfall it has yet to figure out how to overcome. With the proposed tax increases only covering 30 per cent of this deficit, councillors will be hard pressed to convince residents of their ability to generate $33 billion over the next seven years.

Vacancy rate along Queen Street East a major concern Why are there 30 storefront vacancies along Queen Street East from Woodbine Avenue to Neville Park Boulevard? Out of the eight storefronts between Lee Avenue and Wheeler Avenue, why are six of them vacant?

Why has the property at 1951 Queen St. E. been vacant for 30 years? Why has the City of Toronto’s “visioning plan” for Queen Street East been an absolute disaster? Why are landlords not charged a punitive

vacancy tax - especially if the property has been vacant for more than five years? What other neighbourhood in the city has a 10 per cent storefront vacancy rate? Queen Street East is beginning to look like downtown Detroit with no visible effort to

change it. Landlords and city planners are clearly both absent from our neighbourhood.

Zahra Dhanani at Old’s Cool General Store in East York, the community hub she and partner Mariko have established. had a curriculum and all the readings were about white women, I would get up and make speeches and say why aren’t there women of colour on this curriculum and I advocated for change. . . It’s infused into everything I’ve ever done.” After graduating the University of Ottawa with a double major in Women’s Studies and Political Science, Zahra went to Osgoode Hall Law School at York and eventually went on to get her Master of Laws in Alternative Dispute Resolution with a focus on Restorative Justice. Zahra’s résumé goes on to illustrate the years of work and service she has poured into making positive change for many marginalized people. From Justice Director: Youth Action Post-Charge Diversion Project, Aboriginal & Black Youth for Native Child & Family Services to Director: Justice Programs and Ontario Women’s Justice Network, and held numerous other remarkable positions that are all in the name of making the world a more equitable place. While making change is admirable, it is also an exhausting and often uphill battle. I asked Zahra what the response was when she dared to question authority in situations like the allwhite women’s curriculum at university, and she said, “I’ve been met with so much defensiveness my whole life. Primarily by the people I’ve challenged, whether it was white feminists in mainstream feminism, or white men in the justice system, or men of colour in my own community who were sexist and misogynist.

So anytime you try and activate for social change, my experience primarily with people who have power and privilege is that they don’t want to acknowledge it. They don’t want to make changes that take away their comforts and their power. People with power and privilege deny that there’s inequality because they haven’t experienced it. Half the people don’t even think about the problem because they’re busy with their own lives and they don’t have a problem so what’s the problem? Meanwhile, you go through life seeing so much when you’re on the marginal end, you see all the suffering, especially if you’re sensitive to it and attuned to it. I’ve never been a person who could just think about my own life.” So the journey for Zahra continues, in spite of its abundant challenges she moves forward in her work as a transformation specialist, consulting with companies and organizations on anti-oppression, decolonization, investigations into conflict and harassment, and organizational development. “I’m very good at ascertaining what the problem is and how to fix it. . . I’ve consulted for not-for-profits, government, universities, with a lot of different institutions. . . I’ve been rooted in an understanding of anti-oppression, dynamics of power and privilege, studying it for 30 years. . . Our whole world is built on inequality.” This sad truth does not discourage Zahra, in fact when I asked her what keeps her going when times are tough and you might not have the answers, she said, “I want a world where the most marginalized people feel safe and welcome. This is my life’s work and mission. This is what propels everything I do.” Aside from Zahra’s efforts in changing the world through her consulting business, she and Mariko have also built a welcoming community hub with their shop, Old’s Cool General Store. Old’s Cool is filled with your standard convenience store items but it’s also an amazing place to find unique products from BIPOC businesses and fun gifts extolling the virtues of powerful Black women in history through books and postcards, Indigenous books and T-shirts, to soaps and soy candles. They also have a community fridge with food for anyone who needs Continued on Page 14

that make things better for our community.” The lessons she learned within her Ismaili community may have planted the seed, but the nurturing and growth of Zahra’s dedication to equal rights were self directed. “From a very young age, I was reading everything from Martin Luther King speeches, to The Diary of Anne Frank. I’ve always been globally minded. Social justice minded and I was interested in violence against women and homophobia, in these bigger picture things and I found communities doing that work. I entered into those communities at 13 (years old). “I was part of a group called Leaders in Action. It was in Scarborough. We were youth who would take on a project on a very specific issue in the world. So I found places outside of the Ismaili community where I could do my contributing on social justice issues specifically. That is core to my identity.” Even at the age of four years old Zahra possessed an acute sense for injustice. “I had this sense of equality. Everybody is equal and everybody should be treated like they’re equal. Everybody has a right to dignity and respect. Social justice was a very clear driver of everything I’ve done from a very young age. “I was that person who went to university and didn’t see things happening for women of colour, so I started events for women of colour. I started a group called ‘Real Sista Love’ and it was a group for BIPOC women in 1991. I was in Women’s Studies and if they

e’ve all heard the statement, usually said with the naive pride of the uninitiated, “I don’t see colour.” If one were to be generous, we would say that this declaration is meant as a positive assurance of one’s egalitarian views. However, this late in the game, I believe we’ve had the opportunity to understand so much more about how this claim can be dismissive, obtuse, and downright harmful. We need to really “see” each other. If you don’t really see the other person how can you truly connect with them? This month I had the great pleasure of meeting the vibrant and passionate Zahra Dhanani, a self described transformation specialist and owner of Old’s Cool General Store on the corner of Westlake Avenue and Lumsden Avenue which she co-owns with her partner Mariko. Zahra is of Indian descent and was born in East Africa. As a young child Zahra already had a strong sense for justice. She shared, “I witnessed a lot of different violence in both places. And then coming to Canada and getting beat up in school yards. We first came to Vancouver, then Edmonton, and then Toronto. And I got racially harassed, verbally harassed, I was called all sorts of names. Also seeing the abuse in my own community and home, I became very, very, very interested in how we can end the violence in our world or look toward making the world a bit better. “All my life experiences have informed a deep, deep, deep desire for a socially just, kind, humane world. And not just for people with privilege but for all people.” How she embarked on this journey as a social justice crusader began with her roots in the Ismaili Muslim community. “I grew up in the Ismaili Muslim community where the motto was ‘work, no words.’ There’s a very strong volunteer component of our community. It’s called the ‘volunteer core’. It’s a very serious discipline in our community. We were always engaged, as far as we can remember in our community, to do things

East Toronto’s Bengali Hindu community celebrates Durga Puja DURGA PUJA, the biggest religious festival of the Bengali Hindus, was recently celebrated with full fervour in East Toronto. The Bangladesh Canada Hindu Mandir in East York, was crowded to the brim on Oct. 21, 22 and 23. Scarborough temples Hindu Dharmasram and Toronto DurgaBari were also hugely crowded during the Puja days. All the evenings, vocal and dance artists from home and abroad also performed in the temples. Durga Puja, a celebration of the goddess Durga, is the most popular religious celebration to the Bengali Hindus. The celebration symbolizes the demolition of the evil and the upbringing of the good. Hindus living in Bangladesh and West Bengal of India perform the celebration with full enthusiasm. It has crossed religious borders for decades and hundreds of thousands attendees from other religious identities also gather at the temples. History says the first Durga Puja was performed in Toronto in 1973 and this year is the golden jubilee of the celebration.

Durga Puja was celebrated by Bengali Hindus around the world including in East Toronto last month. This photo shows the celebrations at the Bangladesh Canada Hindu Mandir. To celebrate the 50th year, the popular Bengali weekly BanglaMail has published a Sharod Special Issue on Oct. 19. The guest editor of the special issue is noted East Toronto writer and curator Subrata Kumar Das. The special focussed on the history of Durga Puja in many different cities of Canada. Many noted writers from the Canadian Bengalis community living in Canada have penned feelings and experiences on/of Durga Puja. The popular Bengali television channel NRB did telecast recorded programs for

three days on the eve of the celebration. Under the direction of Subrata Kumar Das, about 45 renowned artists from the community performed. On Oct. 21, the Scarborough temple Hindu Dharmasram arranged an event to show honour to Shahidul Islam Mintu, the publisher and editor of BanglaMail and CEO of NRB for his huge contribution to publicise community events irrespective of religion. - This article was submitted by Subrata Kumar Das.

Actions help build a better world ‘Zahra’ from Page 7 it. “For us Old’s Cool is a gathering place where you can meet your neighbour and get to know them and do things with them. And for us towards a social justice end, but part of the social justice end is to break the isolations and alienation that western society has embedded now into our being. We want people to spend time. We want people to read the books even if they don’t buy them. We want people to get an education through the store.” Ultimately the store is about community connection. In fact if I were to informally sum up Zahra’s ultimate power in this world, it would be that she is a person who is born to connect. Her love and curiosity for all beings vibrates with the desire for us to all step outside of our own experiences and make connection and peace with each other. Her parting wisdom was this, “People have got to stop second guessing themselves that they can make a difference. Small actions can go a very long way. Take action. Do one small thing that will be in a positive direction towards community understanding, towards unification, towards more education around social justice. Just one step and it’s amazing what happens. I’ve seen miracles when you do just one little thing.” • On Sunday, Dec. 10, Old’s Cool will host a Black Santa event from 2 to 5 p.m. For more info, go to https://oldscoolgeneralstore.square.site

St. Aidan’s new pastor is becoming familiar with Canadian traditions such as Grey Cup ‘Rev. Becky’ from Page 5 reading, writing, and sipping at least a few good cups of tea each day.” Since her arrival in Canada in late August of 2023, Becky has become familiar with the metric system, Canadian Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day…. and the Grey Cup. (She scheduled her induction so people would not miss the opening kick-off.) As Sheila Dunn, one of the two church wardens, said, “Becky is smart, engaging, deeply spiritual, and has a wonderful sense of humour which even appreciates our Canadian obsession with winter.” The other warden, Courtney Ebner, picked up on Becky’s engagement, “Becky is already energizing our parish with a fresh perspective on ministry and serving the Beach neighbourhood.”….most recently by handing out Halloween candy in front of the church to more than 140 children and youth on Oct. 31. She’s impressed members of the congregation in a similar number of ways.

Ginnie Wilson, head of the Altar Guild said, “I am grateful for Becky’s gentle and supportive leadership. In spite of having recently moved here from the States, she has entered into the life and ministry of St Aidan’s with enthusiasm and compassion. I hope she will be our guide for many years to come.” Visit to the Greenbelt John Brewin, head of the Eco-Spirituality Committee noted that, “Michael Van Dusen and I drove Becky to see parts of the Greenbelt – the Duffins-Rouge Agricultural Preserve and Rouge National Park – the first week she was here, since we were actively trying to protect it. She grasped what we were trying to protect right away.” Most of the congregation at St. Aidan’s has gotten to know Becky through her homilies that have been steeped in scripture and draw on her own experiences to address contemporary issues. Her training in English and communications is evident.

A REMARKABLE group of women have come together to make a difference in their community through 100 Women Who Care Toronto East. The concept is straightforward and effective: 100 women gather four times a year, once per quarter, for an hour-long meeting. During each meeting, members listen to presentations from three non-profit organizations actively engaged in work within the community. These organizations are typically smaller, grassroots non-profits with a direct and significant impact on the local populace. Members vote anonymously to determine which non-profit should receive their financial support, with each member committing to donating $100 to the selected organization, regardless of their individual vote. The chosen non-profit gets a collective financial boost, and the organizations that aren’t chosen are encouraged to return, often receiving support in the future. The group caters to women who want to give back to their community but may not know where to start, those who are time-strapped

and can’t undertake extensive fundraising activities, and those who wish to learn more about local non-profits. It also serves as a networking platform for like-minded women while also providing support to local restaurants and small businesses. Colleen Power, a member of the steering committee, explained the core mission and principles of the organization, revealing that attendance at meetings typically ranges from 40 to 45 as they work towards 100 members. Power emphasized they would be thrilled to accommodate more than 100 women as they believe “the more, the merrier” when it comes to making a positive impact. The primary goal of 100 Women Who Care Toronto East is to donate $10,000 to a different charity each quarter. Power said the nomination process for the charity groups is typically “first come, first serve.” At each meeting, members are encouraged to submit the names of charities they are passionate about, and the first three to be nominated are heard at that meeting. If more than three charities are suggested, the others are added to the next gathering. 100 Women Who Care Toronto East welcomes both

charity pitches from members and directly from organizations. As confirmed by Power, members can pitch charities they are personally involved with, but they must disclose their connection to maintain transparency. Since its inception, 100 Women Who Care Toronto East has raised $150,000 for local non-profits. Some of the organizations they have supported include Genesis Community of the Arts, Autism Dog Services, Pegasus Community Project, All Saints Toronto, Shelter Movers, Regent Park School of Music, Green Thumbs Growing Kids, and many others. The meetings, 100 Women Who Care Toronto East always features guest speakers and door prizes. For anyone interested in joining, the next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 11 at the Balmy Beach Club, 360 Lake Front, at 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker at the meeting will be Amber Mac of Amber Mac Media, a television host, author and entrepreneur. Also speaking will be holistic nutritionist and personal trainer Monica Radu. To learn more, please go to www.facebook.com/ 100WomenWhoCareTorontoEast

After five novels in French, local author Daniel Soha releases his first English book By Marcia Dubsky

DANIEL SOHA is an award-winning author in the French language and has written five novels in French and translated two books of poetry. Soha grew up and went to school in Aix en Provence in France where he studied Anglo-American literature and culture. “I picked Anglo-American culture and literature, basically because the first job opportunity would be teaching, and teaching ensured me with financial independence very early. I didn’t want to go on and on and on studying looking for a job,” said Soha, a former Beach resident who now calls southwest Scarborough home. He recently released his first book in English, a collection of short stories titled Vignettes. According to Soha, he took a competitive exam with the French government and qualified for a teaching position. He later applied for an opportunity to work abroad as it seemed like a more appealing option than having to do compulsory military service in France. After leaving France for the first time to work in New York, Soha was then able to secure jobs in other countries and major cities including Singapore, Paris, and Boston before coming to Toronto. Throughout his career as

an author, Soha wrote novels in French but he said his limitations in living in a city where people speak mostly English encouraged him to take on the challenge of writing his first book in English. “I was married to an Anglophone, working and living around people speaking in English,” said Soha. “Everyone would be asking what my books in French are about. Explaining it is not the same thing as if they read it.” He said Vignettes is a mix of stories. “This book is about various places, people, situations, inspirations, time periods, and even, to a certain degree, literary styles,” said Soha. “You find intimate, almost confidential narratives, others that are very romantic and poetic, a nostalgic novella, various treatments of the theme of life and death, from tragic to humorous, and even an Irish story written in the style of HP Lovecraft.” According to the foreword of the book, Soha tried many times to express himself in French to then translate into English but people would have a hard time understanding his French expressions. “I learned the hard way what has been drilled into the mind of every self-respecting translator: You always translate into your own native language, and not the other way around. And for those who are hesitant about

Author Daniel Soha, a former Beach resident now living in southwest Scarborough, has recently released his book of short stories Vignettes what their first language is, it is quite simply the language you spontaneously count in,” said Soha. He said he likes to take on new challenges and writing in English helped him see a bigger vision for his next writings. “I want to give people a good time reading my stories. That’s all I want. I want

to create pleasure in other people. This is ultimately the most rewarding thing about being a writer,” said Soha. Vignettes is available for purchase locally at Book City, 1950 Queen St. E., in the Beach. For more information on Soha and Vignettes, please go to: https://mosaicpress. ca/products/vignettes

SCARBOROUGH PLAYERS production of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol will take the stage from Dec. 1 to 16 at the Scarborough Village Theatre. A Christmas Carol was published on Dec. 19, 1843 and sold out within six days. It was then adapted for the stage eight times in 1844. Its universal themes of family, social responsibility and redemption, accounts for the enormous continuing popularity of the story in all its incarnations. Scarborough Players chose John Jakes’ adaptation of A Christmas Carol for its unique dramatic concept. Dickens is introduced, and enters the stage, ready to present one of the famed platform readings of his stories that packed auditoriums in Europe and North America. And so, he opens the show with his beloved Christmas classic: “To begin with Marley was dead…Old Marley was dead as a doornail…This must be understood or nothing wonderful can come of this story I am about to relate.” Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserly man of business and a curmudgeon who cares

The Scarborough Players will present A Christmas Carol from Dec. 1 to 16 at the Scarborough Village Theatre. The classic Charles Dickens tale tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his fateful visits from three spirits one Christmas Eve. nothing for Christmas cheer. He answers every “Merry Christmas” with a “bah humbug!”, until one Christmas Eve he is visited by three spirits. They are the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future who set out to show Ebenezer the error of his ways. Audience members are invited to join Dickens as he takes them on Scrooge’s ghostly journey to redemption with help from the characters generations have all come to love. This timeless holiday classic reminds us each year that it is never too late to become

a better person. For this production of A Christmas Carol, Scarborough Players welcomes back director Katherine Turner who is enjoying the opportunity of bringing the play to life. Turner last directed Players’ production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Once again, an extraordinary creative team is putting the show together. The team includes set design by Tony Jones; lighting magic from Chris Northey; sound design by Bodene Corbitt; and prop coordination by Eileen Dalton. The challenging task of costuming 20 actors playing multiple roles, has been taken on by the super Costume Squad – Valerie Lusted, Jane

Allen, Hayley McCormick, Mary Nowlan and friends. Stage manager Wendy Miller returns for this production, supported by assistant stage manager June Watkins. The cast includes Scarborough Players’ veteran actors, Greg Nowlan, Chip Thompson, Dave Corbitt, Caleb Upshaw, Larry Westlake, John Pirker, Neil Kulin, Alma Sinan, Rhonda Upshaw, and Mary Nowlan. Also on stage will be newcomers Paul Coady, Melissa Wood, Victoria Badham, Jamie Obregon, Tala Fayad, Gerald Seaward, and Matthew Thomas along with young actors Zev Stone, Avery Gouge and Raya Talunay. Throughout the production run of A Christmas Carol, Scarborough Players will be hosting a food drive for Feed Scarborough. Those attending are asked to please bring a food donation to support families in need. In December, Feed Scarborough projects that it will serve more than 30,000 people at its six food banks. To order tickets for A Christmas Carol, or for more information about Scarborough Players, please visit www.theatrescarborough. com/scarboroughplayers or call 416-267-9292. The Scarborough Village Theatre is located at 3600 Kingston Rd. on the northeast corner of Kingston and Markham roads.
