AREA RESIDENTS and the local councillor are demanding that a repeat of the violence and rowdy behaviour that took place in and around Woodbine Beach Park and Ashbridges Bay Park on the Victoria Day long weekend not be able to happen again. The night of Sunday, May 22, into the morning of Monday, 23, (Victoria Day) saw seven police officers injured, a shooting, a stabbing and multiple arrests as large groups of young people were gathered in the area shooting off fireworks at each other, members of the public, buildings and passing vehicles. “It’s two years in a row. It’s something we need to be aware of and plan for it, and make sure we have the resources in place,” said Beaches-East York Councillor Brad Bradford in an interview with Beach Metro Community News late last week. Prior to the Victoria Day long weekend the councillor and police had said plans were in place to ensure public safety, deal with litter and the large crowds expected to attend – especially for the city’s fireworks display on the Monday night. However, it appears some of that planning did not take into account large crowds gathered as a result of social media posts on the Sunday night. “When seven front line officers are injured responding to an incident, it clearly indicates we did not have enough resources. They needed more support,” said Bradford. Six police officers were injured after they had fireworks shot at them. A seventh officer suffered a broken leg responding to a shooting call in the area. By the end of the long weekend, one person was injured in a shooting, another in a stabbing, two armed robberies at gunpoint had taken place in the area and 19 people had been arrested on Sunday night and another five on Monday.

After the situation on Sunday night, there was a huge police presence in the area for the city’s fireworks display at Ashbridges Bay Park on Monday. Bradford said lots of preparation among a number of city services including police had gone into how the Victoria Day fireworks display on May 23 night would be handled given it was the first one since the COVID-19 pandemic began. “That was planned with months of preparation for the city’s first fireworks display in three years. There were allocated resources and a proactive response.” Cindy Cass, who co-ordinates the Neighbourhood Watch program in the neighbourhood north of Lake Shore Boulevard East across from Woodbine Beach Park which is referred to as Pleasantville, said Sunday night was terrifying experience for residents in the area. “This was absolutely horrific,” she said. “And the complete lack of respect for authority here. They were approaching the police officers and firing Roman candles (fireworks) at them. Who does that and why?” “I don’t even know what to say about it,” she added. “It was beyond anything I could have imagined.” Cass said shooting fireworks at people and property is terrifying for those who are being victimized, but the fact weapons such as guns and knives were also in evidence made the situation so much more dangerous. She said she felt police had actually prepared fairly well for the long weekend in the area, but the sheer numbers of people coming to cause trouble was simply too much to deal with. “Police can only do so much. There are only so many police,” said Cass. “I think it’s a societal issue. It’s frightening. People were walking up and down the streets firing roman candles. People couldn’t even Continued on Page 7

AFTER FIVE decades of being the “go to” music store in the Beach, Scarboro Music’s Frank Natale is retiring. The store is a landmark location at the southwest corner of Kingston Road and Victoria Park Avenue, and has served the needs of musicians and aspiring musicians since Natale, 75, first set up shop in the neighbourhood in 1972. He bought the Scarboro Music House at 1043 Kingston Rd., a couple of doors west of where the current store is now located, in 1972 and operated the business there until starting construction on the new building in 1979. “It was a vacant lot at that corner,” remembered Natale. He also remembered how complicated it was to get approvals for the building, which also included his residence above the store, as it

was in the days of Metro Toronto so he needed approvals from both Toronto and Scarborough councils before being able to go ahead as it was on the border of the two municipalities. Natale said the result, though, was a “great” building that is a landmark and represents for many the crossing of what was once the old boundary between Scarborough and Toronto. An accordionist, Natale also taught piano and organ to a generation of young musicians in the neighbourhood. He said an appreciation of music, and learning how to play it, is important for young people. “It develops a different

He found out that the Scarboro Music House on Kingston Road was for sale, and he closed the deal in 1972. “The owner was getting ready to retire and I was interested, so I made him an offer,” said Natale. The rest is East Toronto music history. One question Natale gets asked a lot is why the store goes with the shorter spelling of Scarboro as opposed to the municipality’s official spelling of Scarborough. “It was spelled that way when I first bought the store and felt why change it,” he Continued on Page 3

Business built around passion for music ‘Scarboro’ from Page 2 said. Over the past 50 years, Natale said the support for Scarboro Music from the community has been fantastic. “I can’t thank the community enough for their support during the last 50 years. Certainly 90 per cent of our retail and studio business was done with the community and I’ve been blessed to have built a business around my passion.”

Now that he is retiring, Natale said he intends to spend more time at his cottage in the Kawarthas. Scarboro Music, and its dedicated staff of music professionals and teachers, will continue operating. Among those who made and continue to make Scarboro Music a special place are music teacher Ivan Zilman and studio manager Josh Dieleman. Zilman has been with

FOR A community named after its waterfront location, the Beach has understandably embraced Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) as a hub for those interested in getting out on to the water and experiencing the joys of the lake. This year, the club is celebrating its 90th anniversary and looking back at its modest beginnings. The ABYC was founded in 1932, during the peak of the Great Depression, by Archie Walker, Bob Walker, Rollie Alsop, and Johnny Gibson. With the faltering economy and an uncertain future ahead of them, they found respite by getting out on the open water for sail boat racing with friends. The club was originally located at Knox and Eastern Avenues and served as a way into Toronto-wide inter-club competitions, which inevitably led to more people wanting to join in. But with little money going around to spend on leisure, aspiring members would opt to contribute in other ways in exchange for a spot in the club. So, in 1936, the first clubhouse was built by the club members themselves, which set off a lasting tradition of member contribution in lieu of high membership fees.

Today, this model carries on, allowing more people to join the club and get involved in sailing. Carolyn Weckesser, a commodore at the club and the chair of the 90th anniversary celebration committee, explained how this has led to a very diverse group of members today, from around the city and of all different age groups. “Its a sport that you can take up at any age and do as long as you feel healthy enough to do it,” she said, adding that they have sailors from as young as five all the way up to 95. They’ve seen a significant increase in membership over the last five years, likely due to the COVID-19 pandemic which left many looking for an outdoor hobby. “No better social distancing than out on the water,” said Weckesser. One of the more notable club members is Sarah Douglas, who has won multiple awards in sailing competitions around the world and set the best result for a Canadian woman in an individual sailing event at the 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympics. Douglas will be going for the gold again when she competes at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. But members don’t need to be Olympic athletes to

ABYC’s vision is to open up the shore to the community and enable anyone to participate in watersports. Even without a boat, members can get on the water through the co-operative sailing program, which lets you sail on one of the clubowned boats. For those that might be new to the water and don’t want to sail right away, there are also kayak and paddleboard programs that give members a chance to wet their feet, so to speak. In keeping with its vision of inclusion, ABYC has also partnered with Broad Reach Canada this year, an organization dedicated to equality and inclusion through sailing.

Yachting and sailing has traditionally been seen as an exclusive activity, often associated with those who are wealthy. Through their partnership with Broad Reach and low membership fees, ABYC continues its efforts towards making these activities accessible for all who are interested, regardless of their socio-economic status. Over the years the club has hosted a number of regional, local and national sailing regattas, and will be hosting many more this year as they celebrate their 90th anniversary. The celebrations will culminate with the Anniversary Heritage Weekend Sept. 17 and 18. For more information on the club, please go to www. abyc.ca

In My Opinion

Think about community investment when you cast your vote Board of Directors East End Community Health Centre Guest Column THIS ELECTION, let’s invest in community. Imagine you are 62 years old and you’ve returned home from a hospital stay for severe depression. In your mailbox is a letter informing you that your new landlord is moving in. You have 60 days to vacate. To make things worse, you’ve had a toothache for months. You saved a little bit of money for dental surgery, but now you have to decide: fix your tooth pain or use the money for a new apartment. Can you afford a place to live with these rising prices? You were hop-

ing to get into affordable housing this year, but haven’t had an update in months. What do you do? This is just one of many stories that our clients at East End Community Health Centre (CHC) can relate to. As a front-facing community health organization, we’ve seen what our community has endured during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the supports needed to get through a crisis. We’re raising our voices for marginalized people here in BeachesEast York because having leaders and policies that support community health matters. A growing body of research shows that health is not determined by our genetics and lifestyle choices alone, but also by our connections to each other and the com-

munities we live in. Sadly, we hear from our community members that access is not equal for mental health supports, affordable housing, and dental care (all issues that are the responsibility of the provincial government). This is especially true for community members who struggle to make ends meet and put food on the table. In a recent survey conducted by the Angus Reid Institute in partnership with CBC, 54 per cent of Canadians said their mental health had worsened over the past two years. Like thousands across communities in Toronto and our province, most of our clients cannot afford private psychotherapy and East End CHC has not received provincial funding to expand these ser-

vices for several years. Our waitlist is growing and is now at an unprecedented six months. This is unacceptable. To fix a broken system, health and social service agencies like ours need more funding for early mental health interventions to support vulnerable Ontarians. Affordable housing is another concern for our clients. In a recent CMHC report, the stock of affordable housing in the GTA declined in 2021 with the predominant reasons being demolition, condominium conversion and owner’s personal use. For the 40 per cent of East End CHC clients whose annual household income is below $30,000, purchasing a home is an unlikely dream. We need an affordable housing plan that meets demand, but also protects tenants and controls skyrocketing rents.

Lastly, we are concerned about the oral health of our clients who cannot access or afford essential dental care. Our clients with limited income and no dental insurance are forced to prioritize basic needs like food and housing over dental appointments. One in three Ontario residents do not have dental coverage, and one in five cannot afford dental care at all. We need a comprehensive program that covers everyone in Ontario, not just for routine care, but also for pressing oral health issues like root canals. As we head to the ballot box for this Ontario election, our question to local leaders and candidates is this: To help us build and sustain our community, what will you do to ensure free and equitable access to fundamental health and social services?

Letters to the Editor

More police not the solution to safety concerns Strike should be settled After Sunday’s (May 22) incidents of violence at Woodbine Beach, our community is once again seeing calls for increased police presence. Our city councilor, Brad Bradford, made this clear on Twitter, describing our officers as under-resourced and unprepared. It is with a renewed sense of commitment to safety and access for everyone in this city that I vehemently oppose these calls for increased policing, and think you should too. In 2020, we saw uprisings all over the world against police violence, and the harm this causes in our communities was made plain. Bradford himself voted to reduce the police budget by 10 per cent -- a number, I would argue, that was symbolic

in nature but nonetheless represented a willingness to acknowledge these harms. In the years since, he and city council have done little to engage with the meaningful alternatives to the police that have been proposed, studied, and implemented in other cities. Instead, they have voted to increase the Toronto Police Services (TPS) budget and continue touting them as the solution to every problem. I am not here to condone gun (or any other) violence, nor am I here to dismiss the legitimate fears that accompany such violence. I am, however, here to remind residents of Beaches-East York of the commitments that were made to acknowledge and act on the impacts of

anti-Black racism and its strong presence in the institution of policing. When we call for more police, we are, inadvertently or not, calling for the prioritization of the safety of some members of our community over that of others. The Beach does not belong to the homeowners that live nearby. It is not, as Bradford states, our beach. The Beach is a public space and we should, first and foremost, seek to reinforce that with things like increased public programming, open washrooms, and widespread efforts to make this city more accessible for everyone — which will not be achieved through more police. Britt Caron

I live in a seniors’ building in the Beach where the capital repairs have been interupted by the construction strike. The hall carpeting has been torn up and the new tiles are piled up the recreation room. This room has been closed down, meaning that we cannot use the chairs and tables for social interaction, the library, the piano, or the washer and dryer. Also, the social worker and maintenance staff in the building cannot use their office. The strikers and their employers need to settle their differences, get the tiles laid, and get out of here. Scarborough Players production of Educating Rita set to open June 3 SCARBOROUGH PLAYERS’ production of Willy Russell’s Educating Rita opens June 3 at Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd. A delightful comedy, the play is also the story of drive and passion and what it means to look at one’s life and embrace change. Rita (played by Alison

Mullings) is determined to change her life by enrolling in the Open University. It is her first step to change as she feels she is out of step with her friends and family. Frank (played by Greg Nowlan), her assigned tutor, tries to send her away as he feels he cannot provide her with what she is seeking. Rita is not dissuaded and so

Walk to End ALS on June 12 in Ashbridges Bay Park THE WALK To End ALS is slated to take place in Ashbridges Bay Park on Sunday, June 12. Presented by the ALS Society of Canada, the walk is part of the events that take place during June which is ALS Awareness Month. ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a currently terminal illness that paralyzes people because their brain is no longer able to communicate with the muscles in the body. More than 3,000 Canadians live ALS, and more than 1,000 are diagnosed with it

each year. The ALS Society of Canada empowers people with ALS and their families to navigate the realities of the disease and to provide support for them. The June 12 walk at Ashbridges Bay is one of many taking place across the country to raise both awareness and funds. The three-to-fivekilometre walk begins at 10:15 a.m., with registration for participants starting at 8:30 a.m. The Toronto walk’s fundraising goal is $150,000. For more information about the walk, go to www. walktoendals.ca/ontario

Bad behaviour glorified on some social media ‘More’ from Page 1 let their dogs out to pee. It was crazy,” she added. In the future, Bradford said safety planning for the entire long weekend will probably be handled by the police’s Emergency Management and Public Order Unit which should ensure enough officers are available as needed. Cass said social media companies need to take some responsibility for the glorification of the bad behaviour that took place over the long weekend. She said she saw people bragging on social media

platforms about how they had taken part in robberies in the area on the Sunday night. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” said Cass of what she saw on social media. “People are bragging about what they did, about robbing people. There should be consequences for the companies that allow this.” She urged residents fed up with such behaviour to consider forming a Neighbourhood Watch group as it provides a contact point and process in which to deal with police and politicians.

the sparring begins. Director Maureen Lukie sees Educating Rita as “a salty sparring match with each scene like a round with underlying issues of aspiration, alienation, disappointment with life and frustration. Each partner brings a rich history of these to each round with it coming to a boil in the second act when the gloves really come off.” Bringing Frank to life is Thea Award winning actor,

Greg Nowlan. Rita is played by Alison Mullings whose first role with Scarborough Players was as Lydia Wickham in the December 2021 production of Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. A talented team of volunteers have created Frank’s 1980’s university office including set designer Monima Thomas and lighting designer Lily Stewart, both of whom are new to Scarbor-

ough Players. Bodene Corbitt is once again, designing sound, Ciara Crozier is adding props and working as assistant stage manager all supported by the skilled care of stage manager, Wendy Miller. Producer Katherine Turner notes that one positive coming back from the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for safety allowed Scarborough Players to consider a small cast show such as the

two-hander, Educating Rita. Willy Russell, the playwright, was himself a working-class hairdresser who also worked his way to become more educated about the world of literature. Educating Rita runs from June 3 to June 18. To order tickets, or for more information, visit www. theatrescarborough.com/ scarboroughplayers or call 416-267-9292. LOCAL RESIDENT Brett Tarver is helping support the humanitarian response for the people of Ukraine through his work with World Vision Canada. Tarver, who grew up in the Beach and now lives in the Queen Street East and Coxwell Avenue area, is the Advocacy and Media Lead for World Vision Canada, which is a Christian relief, development and advocacy organization. He is currently in Romania and Moldova working to help Ukrainians impacted by the invasion of their country by Russia earlier this year. “My job is focused on advocacy communications, kind of like a humanitarian journalist dedicated to raising awareness about what is going on here,” he said in an email interview with Beach Metro Community News in late April. “Fundamentally, it’s about finding and sharing hope in what might seem hopeless. The goal is for Canadians to understand the needs of Ukrainians who have been forced from their homes and how we can help in the best way possible.” Tarver has been with World Vision Canada for just over seven years. Prior to that, he was a journalist for 10 years working as a field producer for news stories with a television station. He said he was working an early-morning shift at the television station when he decided a change of career was in order. He now uses his journalistic skills to tell the world, and Canadians in particular, what is happening to the people of Ukraine who have forced to flee their country as refugees. “My past career as a journalist developed the skills to be able to share stories about some really complicated things with very little time or space and to do it in a way that

He said what is happening to the people of Ukraine is a humanitarian crisis, both for those who have been able to get out as refugees into other bordering countries but also for those who remain under attack by the Russians. World Vision has been working in some of those countries, including Romania, delivering food, medicine and hygiene supplies for refugees in shelters. “The situation here continues to evolve, Continued on Page 11

Support from international community crucial for Ukrainian refugees ‘Local’ from Page 10 it’s still very fluid day by day. And so we keep adapting and responding to help where and how help is most needed,” said Tarver. “So beyond basic essentials, our priority now is mental health, education and protection.” Tarver said many of those refugees, overwhelmingly women and children, arrive with virtually nothing but the clothes they are wearing. Even though they may have gotten out of the direct war zone, they still face numerous threats of violence and exploitation. “Protection means a few things. For women and girls it is about protection from the threat of exploitation and human trafficking. And for women and children it is about programs that protect them from different forms of violence,” he said. A family he recently met in Romainia is representative of the situation many of the more than five million refugees from Ukraine are facing, said Tarver. “Inna and her three young children had just crossed the border into Romania after escaping Odessa. They had little more than the clothes on their backs, some essential documents and a few small suitcases. They just wanted to get to safety but she really didn’t know where she was going next and for how long. There are many stories of need like this,” he said. Countries and organizations around the world are stepping up to the help the refugees, and Canadians are no exception. “The overwhelming response from Canadians and the world has been so incredible, especially for refugees,” said Tarver.

“It really is a mass gesture of solidarity that is unprecedented in my experience with global crises.” Still, there is a lot of pressure is on the residents of neighbouring countries such as Romainia, Moldova, and Poland which is only going to increase. As well as neighbouring countries, Ukrainians are fleeing to other parts of their country that are not the focus of the Russian military at the moment. This is also creating a very difficult and dangerous situation, said Tarver. “Canadians should know the needs inside Ukraine are absolutely immense,” he said. “There are actually nearly twice as many people inside the country who have fled for their lives to escape the fighting who have found shelter in other parts of the country. “These communities need a lot more support, especially inside Ukraine. That’s why we are mostly focused on ramping up our response in Ukraine to work with these local partners and communities to help them help others. Some towns and cities across western Ukraine have literally doubled, even tripled in size because of the influx people, mostly women and children.” And the situation is becoming more dire as refugees continue to try and get to a place of safety. “This would overwhelm the communities that host them so organizations and countries around the world need to be prepared to offer more support to ease the load on local people.” That’s why the help coming in from countries such as Canada is so important, he said.

“The Canadian government has done so much, it really is incredible and as a Canadian it makes me so proud The real key here is sustained support recognizing that this could well get a lot worse before it gets better and even after the war ends, there will be a long rebuilding process. We simply can’t ease our support when media outlets ease off on media coverage of this crisis,” said Tarver. “The outpouring of support from Canadians has been phenomenal. I’d just say, please, keep offering that solidarity in every way you can, including social media for those affected the most. And to continue to support organizations like World Vision that are on the ground responding. It really is making a huge difference.” Tarver said that while he is exposed to

what can be horrific situations and human suffering on a large scale, the work done by World Vision and other organizations is critically important and he is proud of his contribution to it. “It’s been an incredible life experience working at World Vision. Through my work I’ve travelled to some of the most dangerous places to be a child including Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo. The stories of people in these places break my heart over and over again, but I’m driven to make even a small difference in any way I can.” For information on how you can support the work of World Vision Canada for the people of Ukraine, please go to www.worldvision.ca

Unsung hero Matthew Lucien makes a difference for local swimmers the community factor couldn’t be any stronger. The feeling of togetherness was through the roof. “I always wanted to share my passion for the sport [of swimming]. That’s what led me into coaching. I wanted to share the love, the joy of swimming. I believe in only doing what you love and I’ll tell you, I wouldn’t be here this long if I didn’t love it,” he said.

By Jonathan Kravtchenko

AS I walk out onto the pool deck to meet Matthew Lucien, the first thing I notice about him is his smile and warm, cheery attitude. Matthew has been working at Jimmie Simpson Recreation Centre on Queen Street East for more than 20 years, and in that time has made it the most welcoming, positive and supportive environment possible. Riverside remains a close-knit community where almost everyone knows each other. “I want it to be a home away from home” Matthew told me. Indeed, when I visited the rec centre, it certainly felt like I had come home. You can feel the positive energy in the building from the second you walk in. As I walked through the showers and out onto the deck, I could already hear laughter, music and Matthew’s friendly voice. It was Aquafit (a mix of aerobics, disco, Zumba and cardio that takes place in the water) that night, something Matthew is well known for. Matthew’s Aquafit class has a fanbase similar to a sports team,

Helping others succeed

Matthew Lucien coaches at Jimmie Simpson Recreation Centre. and the positive energy is borderline addictive. All the regulars know him, and

Matthew is often volunteering his break time, showing certain swimmers a better technique or skill. “I just really love seeing others succeed. Helping them succeed,” he said. “For me, one of the biggest rewards is seeing someone I coached or helped come back to their roots. Seeing people that I have helped reach their goals, whether in swimming or in life, is what makes me love what I do.” People who swam with Matthew as their coach in the past often bring their kids to Jimmie Simpson – the toddler pool has a history of producing champions . “I think it’s the positive attitude.

When you’re exposed to swimming in a very positive and supportive way, I think it kind of paves a path for the future.” The SPLASH Swim Team program at Jimmie Simpson is also well known around the city for being one of the fastest and bestcoached teams at all the competitions. “So many people got their start at Jimmie Simpson… We’ve had National Team swimmers, high school champions, city champions, provincial and national record holders… The best part is hearing about the positive influence that we had on them and I think that it’s because of the centre’s positive environment that they [as kids] were encouraged and motivated to chase their dreams,” said Matthew. “What’s your least favorite thing about what you do?” I asked. “Nothing,” Matthew replied. “Nothing. Sure, it’s a pain in the ass when the sound system doesn’t work, but hey, at the end of the day I love the community and the community centre so much that I don’t believe there is something I don’t like… I love it all.” Life is not always very light-

hearted, however, and the swim community has certainly had its share of challenges. When a member of the “Jimmie Simpson Rec Centre Family” was diagnosed with breast cancer, the community rallied around her with calls, visits and texts. “No matter what, I did my best to be a positive source of energy for her,” said Matthew. It was a long battle and against all odds, she beat cancer. Hearing that she had beaten cancer was a huge burst of relief. Perhaps as if a damn of pressure and worry had collapsed. I was over the moon with joy when she came to aqua fit a few months later.” When I asked other patrons about Matthew, they said that he is one of the most positive people they have ever met. “I don’t know how he does it. How can someone be so positive and friendly?” a patron told me. As I walked out of the rec centre that night, I felt like I had met some long lost family. A swim family. That’s what makes Matthew Lucien, one of Toronto’s many unsung heroes.

Mike Myers, left, and the late, great Glenn Cochrane conduct a CFTO News interview back in the late 1980s or early 1990s. Myers has created a character called Ken Scarborough in honour of Cochrane for the Netflix series The Pentaverate.

Mike Myers pays tribute to Beacher Glenn Cochrane in The Pentaverate Bernie Fletcher

T

he Pentaverate, the new six-episode Netflix series created by Scarborough’s Mike Myers, ends with the words, “Dedicated to local journalists everywhere.” It’s also a heartfelt homage to our late, great Beacher Glenn Cochrane. Myers plays eight wacky characters, including the hero of the tale, a mild-mannered television reporter from Toronto. Ken Scarborough needs to bring in a big news story to save his job which leads him to track down an ancient and powerful secret society. The Pentaverate is a spoof that mixes high concepts about conspiracy theories and misinformation in the digital age with very lowbrow humour about bodily functions. (Canadians don’t really say “a-boot,” do we?) Ken is on the cover of “Canadian Nice Magazine.” Be warned: there are a lot of four-letter words like “kind” and “nice” plus many a “sorry,” “eh” and “sorry,

eh.” The humour is juvenile, but sorry, it’s not for the kids unless you want to do some explaining about very rude jokes and “how come they get to swear so much?” Myers told a crowd at the “Netflix is a Joke” Comedy Festival that, “I really wanted to dedicate this show to local journalists, because right now in this global war between fascism and democracy, you know, the first casualty of war is truth. Getting rid of local news is just the beginning of a slippery slope of all unfalsifiable fact.” After the end credits we see archival news footage of a young Mike Myers beside Glenn Cochrane who says, “During his distinguished acting career there was one role that Mike Myers always wanted to play, but fate never gave him that opportunity. But today thanks to the magic of television his moment is at hand.” Myers takes the mic and does his best Glenn Cochrane impression, “Here we are at Queen’s Park. Glenn Cochrane, CFTO News.” Glenn answers, “That’s my boy!” The two share a

big hug. After famous roles as Wayne Campbell, Austin Powers, Dr. Evil and Shrek, the comic actor finally gets to play Glenn Cochrane! Cochrane was a CFTO local news reporter for 25 years, a Beach Metro Community News columnist, community leader, Beach Citizen of the Year in 2002 as well as an author along with his wife Jean. Glenn was active at Community Centre 55 and in helping to save the Leuty Lifesaving Station. In 2009 Glenn and Jean co-wrote The Beach: An Illustrated History from the Lake to Kingston Road. The Cochrane family lived in Balmy Beach for more than 40 years. Glenn wrote his last column for this paper in January 2012. It’s been 10 years since Glenn Cochrane passed away in June 2012. He is fondly remembered as a true ambassador for the Beach and Toronto. It is good to see his sense of humour and kindness portrayed in this new series. And yes, local journalism matters.

Members of the Neil McNeil Catholic High School track and field team celebrate their Toronto District Catholic (Colleges) Athletic Association overall championship earlier this month. Last week, Neil McNeil made history by winning its first overall team title at the Metro Toronto championshipss at Birchmount Stadium. Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships set for June 3, 4 and 5 at York University. Neil McNeil qualified 20 of its track and field athletes to take part in the OFSAA meet. Track and field competitions did not take place at Toronto area high schools in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Back in 2019, Neil McNeil also won the TDCAA team title. This year’s TDCAA meet saw more than 1,000 track

and field athletes eager to compete after their two-year absence. And the Neil McNeil athletes of all age groups were in fine form at the meet as they swept the team titles with victories in the novice, junior and senior divisions – which, of course, met they were locks for the overall championship as well. Traditional rivals of Neil McNeil in track and field, the team from Chaminade College was second in all of the divisions and second overall at the TDCAA meet.

The Neil McNeil team was led by the strong performances of seniors Liam McCullagh, Liam Patterson and Gaetano Pocchi. McCullagh and Patterson are planning on attending St. Francis Xavier University next year, while Pocchi will be going to Guelph University. Jason Wood is the head coach of the Neil McNeil track and field team. Assistant coaches are Abigael Layton, Lou Di Florio, Ashley Masterson, Steve Masterson and Arnold Lopez.

Ribs on the barbecue a great way to welcome the month of June Jan Main is an author, cooking instructor and caterer janmainskitchen@ yahoo.ca

JUNE IS one of the most beautiful times of the year. It is also a perfect time for the barbecue. Make the most of early summer days with recipes designed for outdoor dining. Tips for the Barbecue: • Check the barbecue grill to make sure it is clean and ready to use. • If you are using a propane gas barbecue, have a spare tank of propane. • Cooking on the barbecue is usually a short time compared to the rest of the meal. Prepare everything else before you start the barbecue: Set the table, prepare salad and vegetable dishes, make dessert and have it ready to serve, chill drinks and have ice available, assemble serving utensils. • Prepare one or two simple appetizers ready to serve while the main course cooks on the barbecue. Better still, if someone asks, “What can I bring?” Let them bring an appetizer. This preparation simplifies preparation, streamlines serving and means you can enjoy time with your guests! Maple Glazed Ribs This method ensures tender ribs with a flavourful sauce glazed on the ribs not burned. If possible, buy pork

back ribs on sale to reduce the cost. They can be bought ahead and frozen ready to barbecue later. 3 – 4 lbs (2 kg) pork back ribs (side ribs can be used but they are not as meaty; you will need to buy more) water 1 bay leaf 1 onion, chopped Sauce 1 cup (250 mL) real maple syrup 3 tbsp (45 mL) packed brown sugar 2 tbsp (25 mL) ketchup 1 tbsp (15 mL) each, Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard In a large saucepan or Dutch oven cover ribs with cold water, bay leaf and chopped onion. Bring to boil; reduce heat and simmer about 1 to 1 ½ hours or until tender. Drain discarding bay leaf and onion. Meanwhile, in saucepan combine maple syrup, brown sugar, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and mustard. Bring to boil and simmer for a few minutes. Place ribs in a large shallow container and pour sauce over to coat. Allow ribs to marinate 2 hours or overnight. Preheat barbecue to medium high. Remove ribs from sauce reserving marinade. Barbecue ribs about 20 minutes or until tender and glazed. Cut into serving portions. Serve with remaining sauce. Makes 4- 6 servings Lemon Skewered

Potatoes Roasting steamed potatoes on the barbecue makes them taste “Morish! ”The more you eat, the more you want! 1 bag new potatoes (1.5 lb/ 750 grams) Basting Sauce 1/3 cup (75 mL) each, fresh lemon juice and vegetable oil 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tsp (5 mL) salt 1/2 tsp (2 ml) black pepper Using a steamer, over a saucepan of simmering water, arrange potatoes in an even layer in steamer and cover with saucepan lid. Let them cook just until tender but not mushy about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat, pour basting sauce over potatoes and gently turn to coat in sauce. When cool enough to handle, centre 4 potatoes on a single skewer to act as a serving. While ribs are cooking; place on grill or foil sprayed with baking spray and grill about 5-10 minutes or until heated through turning regularly to cook evenly. Serve with the ribs. Rhubarb Lattice Pie Nothing says summer like a rhubarb pie, made from garden fresh rhubarb. (If necessary, you can use frozen rhubarb in this recipe. Follow instructions below.) If time is short, use two purchased pie shells, thawing the one to cut into a lattice for the top. However, if

possible, make this delectable butter pastry for the pie. Serve with a dollop of good vanilla ice cream to celebrate summer! Butter Pastry 2 cups (500 mL) all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt 1/2 cup (125 mL) butter 1/4 cup (50 mL) shortening 1/2cup (125 mL) cold water Rhubarb Pie Filling 5 cups (1.25 L) washed rhubarb cut into 1 inch (2.5 cm pieces 1 cup (250 mL) granulated sugar 1/3 cup (75 mL) all-purpose flour 1 tsp (5 mL) ground cinnamon Pastry: In a mixing bowl, measure the flour. (How to measure flour for baking: Use a dry measuring cup and a spoon. Spoon the flour into dry measuring cup and level off with the flat edge of the knife. Stir in salt. Cut butter and shortening into small pieces and add to the flour mixture. Using a pastry blender, cut fat into flour until a coarse crumb. Sprinkle this flour mixture with water and stir until it clumps together. Using hands shape into ball; divide into 2 equal pieces and roll out between 2 pieces of parchment paper until 1/8- inch (3mm) thick, rolling away from you and turning paper as you want to form a circle about 1 inch

(2.5 cm) larger than the rim of the 9- inch (23 cm) pie plate. Loosen the top layer of parchment paper and invert the remaining piece with the pastry into pie plate sprayed with baking spray. Top Lattice: Repeat the rolling as above but once you get it to the desired 1/8 inch (3mm) thickness, using a knife cut into even strips. Carefully take one strip and lay on a piece of parchment, arrange the next strip perpendicular through the centre. Alternate lengthwise then crosswise strips weaving in and out until all pastry strips leaving about 1 inch (2.5 cm) between strips to make a lattice. Refrigerate pastry. Filling: Pre-heat oven to 425 F (220 C). Put fresh or frozen rhubarb pieces in mixing bowl; pour boiling water over rhubarb from kettle and let

a rhubarb stand a few minutes, 2 minutes for fresh and longer for frozen until it thaws. Drain thoroughly. This removes some bitterness from the rhubarb. Mix sugar and flour together with cinnamon; sprinkle over rhubarb and stir in evenly to combine. Spoon mixture into prepared pie shell. Carefully take the lattice on parchment paper and invert parchment over the pie so that lattice can be released. Arrange any lattice which has lost its shape. Crimp the outside edges to make a neat frill. Place pie on baking sheet (to catch drips) Bake in pre-heated oven about 40 minutes or until pastry is golden and rhubarb tender. Cool on rack. Serve pie warm or at room temperature. Cut into 6 wedges and serve with ice cream. Makes 6 servings.

Christopher Joseph Casserly of St. Thomas passed away suddenly from natural causes on March 25, 2022.

A TRUSTED NAME IN BEACH REAL ESTATE FOR OVER 33 YEARS I KNOW WHO’S #1 IN BEACH REAL ESTATE... YOU ARE!

Chris was an award-winning musician and songwriter, and you’ve likely heard his lovely voice already. He composed for film, and sang for television shows and commercial campaigns. Chris was hilarious, and his stories made people laugh until they cried. He made friends and helped people wherever music took him, including New York City, Nashville, Los Angeles, Playa del Carmen, and countless venues throughout his beloved Canada. He also had an uncanny knack for saving stray dogs wherever he went. Chris grew up in The Beach(es), where his loves of music, food, and the arts were richly nurtured. Predeceased by his beloved mother Annie, father Robert, and dear brother Patrick. Survived by sisters Pam (Shaun), and Jane (Gerard); niece Kyra; his dear friend Lucia; and extended family and friends, all of whom he loved dearly. Chris lived his life as an artist and storyteller, and he never wavered from his passions. That big jam in the sky just got a lot more fun. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held on June 4, 2022, noon to 2pm at Harmony Hall, 2 Gower St., M4B 1E2. Personal condolences to the family can be made at www.sjfh.ca. Remembering the Alpine Hotel on Kingston Road

By David Van Dyke

Above left is a panorama I shot back in 2014 of the Alpine Hotel. Bottom left photo shows a panorama of the location that I took recently. The hotel was built in 1927 and was located on the sunny side of Kingston Road, just east of Victoria Park Avenue. I remember the Bavarian-style interior and how little I paid for a glass of beer back in the day. Do you have a picture of a business or restaurant that no longer exists in our neighbourhood? Lakewood Ranch Doodles specializes in holistic breeding of Goldendoodles By Alexandros Varoutas

Better things with a Desjardins Agent My service extends far beyond an initial conversation - I’m here for you every step of the way as your life and your needs change. Come see why life’s a little better with a Desjardins Agent. Stop in, call or click.

Leane Besky Insurance Agency Inc Leane Besky CIP, Agent 2243 Queen St E Toronto ON M4E 1G1 416-690-7900 www.leanebesky.com Desjardins Insurance refers to Certas Home and Auto Insurance Company, underwriter of automobile and property insurance or Desjardins Financial Security Life Assurance Company, underwriter of life insurance and living benefits products. Desjardins, Desjardins Insurance and related trademarks are trademarks of the Fédération des caisses Desjardins du Québec, used under licence.

Lakewood Ranch Doodles specializes in the holistic breeding of Goldendoodles that go on to fill a number of roles, from specially trained service dogs to therapy dogs, emotional support dogs and house pets. What makes doodles from Lakewood Ranch unique is the attention to detail that’s paid to each dog throughout its life. “Not all Goldendoodles are created equal,” said Lin, the Director and CEO at Lakewood Ranch Doodles.

For her and her family, producing a dog perfect for a pet or companion role that also possesses all the necessary traits for a service role starts with selecting only parent dogs that are suitable and healthy. One of the most important traits, for example, is temperament. The dogs are specifically bred to be very calm and manageable. Depending on what they’re needed for, the dogs might need to consistently exude calmness and maintain predictable patterns of behaviour. Lakewood doodles are

A number of Goldendoodles from Lakewood Ranch Doodles now call the Beach area home. bred to be medium-sized so that their back comes up to roughly your knee. Managing the size of the breed helps prevent joint problems that usually affect larger dogs. This is especially important for service animals that people with special needs are going to be relying on. Dogs that go into a service role are individually trained to accommodate an array of conditions the new owner may have such as epilepsy, mobility problems, blindness and deafness. These are the dogs that wear a vest or tag to indicate to people around them that they’re in a service role and shouldn’t be approached like an average pet. With therapy dogs, the effect they have is more neurological and emotional. Their calm demeanour and affection can be used to comfort people in places like hospitals or nursing homes. These dogs are often privately owned and routinely taken around to places where they can provide some form of comfort. Lin explained that the chemistry in someone’s brain can change from sensing that there’s a dog around and interacting with it. This effect can also be applied in cases such as autism. Emotional support dogs are similar to therapy dogs but specifically help those who have debilitating emotional or psychological challenges that interfere with day-to-day life, such as severe depression or anxiety disorders. But even dogs that end up as house pets or companions have plenty to offer to improve their owner’s quality of life. “It’s a social thing for people to get out and walk their dog and be able to get out and meet their neighbours,” said Lin, who added that the Beach is already home to many doodles from Lakewood Ranch. Because these doodles have little dander they are allergy-friendly, so people who didn’t own dogs as children due to allergies can enjoy bringing home the pet

they’ve always wanted. Not to mention the non-shedding aspect makes them a clean animal to have in your home. In fact, Lin and her family like to say that they specialize in first-time dog owners by making the process as easy as possible. An education package comes with your new dog along with a meeting when the dog is six weeks old to bond with the puppy and go over everything someone might need to know during the formative puppy years. They’re also available seven days a week to support new owners with any questions or concerns they might have. Customers can also take comfort knowing that Lakewood Ranch is a licensed breeder, which is different from a registered breeder. The main difference is that a licensed breeder follows the code of practice for Canadian Kennel operations and is held to standards set by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. This means that Lakewood Ranch is inspected annually on a number of things such as cleanliness, sanitation, veterinary care, and the overall well-being of the animals. Because they’re a holistic breeder, the dogs’ diets are closely managed and they receive natural treatments for things like ticks and fleas when possible. They also don’t get exposed to harsh chemicals or repetitive vaccines that may not be needed through Titer testing. Lakewood has their own brand of holistic products, supplies and even dog cookbooks that are available to take home for new owners looking to maintain this holistic approach to raising their doodle. The boutique also offers eco-friendly products for dogs as well as anything you need for your new puppy, all of which can be found at www.lakewoodpetboutique.com For more info, please visit https://lakewoodranchdoodles.com – BMN Sponsored Content–
