By Alan Shackleton THE TORONTO Beaches Junior A La crosse Team begin their run at winning the Canadian championship this week in TorontoBrampton.Beaches are one of four teams from across the country taking part in the Minto Cup – Canada’s Junior A lacrosse championship tournament. Also seeking the trophy are the Whit by Warriors, The Edmonton Miners and the Victoria Shamrocks.

The Minto Cup finals are being played at the CAA Centre in Brampton.

However, O’Connor said he is not wor ried about the team being rusty. They have taken time to rest, had some good practices and are now focused directly on their opening game against Victoria. Being in the national lacrosse spot light does bring some added pressure to this week’s Minto Cup, but O’Connor said he is confident his team can deal with that challenge. “I wouldn’t say there are no nerves, but we have some big game players on this team,” he said.

Toronto Beaches captain Matt Ac chione agreed that the team does have experienced players who are used to high-pressure situations. A member of the University of Dela ware Blue Hens lacrosse team in the United States, along with his brother Cam who is also on the Beaches team, Acchione said the players are ready for and excited to be competing at the Minto Cup. The Minto Cup will have deep per sonal meaning for both Matt and his brother Cam (who are from Barrie) as their father Anthony also played in the tournament and won it two times as a member of the Orangeville Northmen in 1995 and 1996. Anthony died of can cer in 2017, and Matt and Cam will be thinking of their dad as they play in the tournament. “We’re really excited to be here and it means a lot to us because of my dad,” said Matt.

First round action in the tournament begins Monday, Aug. 22, with Beaches taking on Victoria at 5 p.m., and Whitby playing Edmonton at 8 p.m. Toronto Beaches second game is Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 5 p.m. against the Edmonton Miners. The third game in the opening round for Beaches will be on Wednesday, Aug. 24, against Whitby at 8 p.m. Once the opening round is finished, the playoff semifinal will take place on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 8 p.m. The Minto Cup championship will then be determined by a best-of-three series between the top team in the opening round and the winner of the semifinal. The championship series games are set for Saturday, Aug. 27, Sunday, Aug. 28, and Monday, Aug. 29 (if necessary).Thishas been an historic season for Toronto Beaches which saw them fin ish up their best regular season ever in the 11-team Ontario Junior Lacrosse League (OJLL). This is also the first time Toronto Beaches has qualified to play in the Minto Cup championship. Since the OJLL is hosting the Minto Cup this year, both the Ontario cham pion and the finalist qualify for the tournament. Whitby are the Ontario champs, beating Beaches in the recent OJLL final However, series.Beaches finished second overall in the OJLL’s regular season and were one spot ahead of Whitby in the standings heading into the league’s playoffs.Beaches coach Reilly O’Connor said no one should view their appearance in the Minto Cup as simply being a case of the additional team spot given to the host province. He said that from the be ginning of the season in the spring, the team’s goal was always to be playing for the Minto Cup. “We had the expectation to be here right from the start,” he said. “We put a major emphasis on acquiring quality players this season, players who could win.”O’Connor said a number of the play ers on the Beaches roster also play Divi sion One lacrosse at major universities in the United States, so he believes the big crowds and pressure of playing in the high-level Minto Cup will not phase them. Both Toronto and Whitby will be coming off two weeks rest after the conclusion of the OJLL championships, whereas the teams from Alberta and British Columbia finished their final playoff series much more recently.

Letters to the Editor Hello Beach Metro Com munity News and to the pa per’s many readers. I recently went through a hair-raising experience with the Toronto Transit Com mission (TTC) and one of its transit operators. I believe your readers would be interested in this experience, as would the many disabled people who live in ThisToronto.iswhat happened to me:I had just boarded the streetcar on Queen Street East when all of a sudden this operator stopped the vehicle, put on his four-way flashers and chose to embar rassHeme.said to everyone on the streetcar, “I have a dis abled passenger who thinks because he’s disabled he should ride for free.” He yelled that all over Queen Street. The TTC says that is com mitted to providing excellent customer service. I think that’s a crock. My intention with this let ter is to open the eyes of the TTC as to how hurtful some of their operators can be. The TTC operators are not supposed to be discriminat ing against people like this. They are supposed to stand for dignity and respecting theThispublic.streetcar operator had no control over himself or the vehicle he was sup posed to be in control of. Reader says thanks to people who helped her after she fell

Disappointment and concern are my feelings as we head into this fall’s municipal election.Thenumber of candidates run ning for office is down across all of Toronto. That’s disappointing and a sign of both lack of interest and belief in the importance of our city government and school boards. My concern is this erosion of local democracy is precisely what our provincial government wants when it comes to Toronto. The recent meddling of Premier Doug Ford and his Progressive Conservative government in how Toronto is governed, who repre sents the residents, and how much power they have is an attack on our city aimed to diminish our influence on provincial affairs. Since the middle of the 1990s there has been a deliberate at tempt to weaken our city, the larg est in the country and province, by the Ontario government. Both Progressive Conservative and Lib eral governments in the province can take the blame. Most responsible for this are former Progressive Conservative Premier Mike Harris in the late 1990s; former Liberal Premier Dal ton McGuinty right after he was first elected in 2003; and Premier Ford since he came to power in 2018.But let’s start at the start. Mike Harris and megacity amalgama tion -- designed to weaken the power of local councils and coun cillors in Toronto and Ottawa. Yes, it took place in some other parts of the province as well, but mostly it was an attack on large cities. In 1997 the City of Toronto, Borough of East York, City of Scar borough, City of North York, City of York, and City of Etobicoke were amalgamated into the megacity. Those municipalities’ public school boards were also amalgamated into the gigantic (and unmanage able) Toronto District School Board. Thanks Mike! Then there’s Dalton McGuinty, who was elected on a wave of voter unhappiness and revulsion at what Mike Harris (and his successor Er nie Eves) had done. McGuinty had the chance to “untangle” the failed idea of megacity amalgamations but did not. That was a terrible decision. It entrenched what had been an attack by the Progressive Conservatives on local democracy, and made it provincial govern ment policy. That showed the true colours of McGuinty when it came to standing up for the rights of Toronto and other urban areas. Thanks Dalton! And then there was 2018 when the Ford government cut the number of council seats in Toronto from 44 to 25 shortly before the municipal election. It was a move that made Toronto Council weaker. Nothing against our councillors, but they now serve city wards the size of their corresponding provincial and federal ridings. They are too big in size and population. There are so many varying needs and differ ing demographics that the wards can’t be served in a way that puts the needs of community residents first. A good municipal govern ment works when the councillors are deeply connected to the resi dents that elected them. So that was Premier Ford’s first shot at us four years ago. This time, for the Oct. 24 mu nicipal election, he comes up with the idea earlier this summer that Toronto and Ottawa (and maybe some other municipalities now) will have a Strong Mayor System. That’s a terrible idea. It puts the power into the hands of even less elected officials and makes any form of opposition irrelevant. Trying to justify this as a way to increase affordable housing is a conTojob.elect a “strong mayor” who gets the most votes among the 31 candidates running for the posi tion with a voter turnout of only 40.9 per cent (which is what it was across Toronto in the 2018 mu nicipal election) is not a “strong” mandate. It’s a recipe for disaster. Thanks Doug! That being said, look to the pages of Beach Metro Community News this fall (and on our website at www.beachmetro.com) as we cover this municipal election. The system is now stacked against Toronto voters, and some may say why bother casting a ballot. That’s exactly what those attacking our democracy want. A large voter turnout will show local democracy is not dead in Toronto. Please vote this October and make a statement proving you care about our city’s future.

Local democracy continues to be weakened in Toronto

Thank You! This is truly Toronto The Good!

Asking the eternal question: Do you say Beach or Beaches? Beaches. This created such a furor between different fac tions (as many said the area should be called the Beach) that the signs were eventu allyWeremoved.thenmove a couple of decades later and a referen dum is held over what the name should be. The clear majority was for the Beach, and so it became along Queen Street East. Recently I was asked a question again about the two names and the controversy surrounding them. I had to ponder the ques tion, and asked more than 100 people I know what was their preference between Beaches and Beach. Now, the outcome was pretty evenly split, so clearly the debate and opinions on this are still strong among community members. So, dear reader, let me lay the question to you who live here in our “beloved whatever name you want to callLetit”.me know by sending an email to Beach Metro Community News editor Alan Shackleton at alan@ beachmetro.com on what name you use to refer to our community. Is it Beaches or Beach for you? Or maybe you would pre fer another name entirely. Please send your email in as I’d like to know what you think, as I believe do our readers. It is called Main Street because it was the main street of East Toronto, from 1888 to 1908. The actual route of Main Street is north of Danforth Avenue, but it once went south all the way to Wil liamson Road in the Beach. It was even planned to go all the way to Queen Street East as Main Street at one time.Just to the northwest of Main and Danforth was the location of the Newmarket Track where the Queen’s Plate horse race was held. Main Street was also home to one of the first YMCA’s and a library more than 100 years ago. Also, the largest railroad freight yards in the province were once located to the northeast of what is now Main Street and Gerrard StreetThereEast.was also a huge bakery in the area, along with many churches, the atres and even a golf course. One of the best and most interesting and artistic works of stained glass is at the Calvary Baptist Church on Main Street, at the north west corner of Benlamond Avenue.Ourwalk will also talk about the origins or street names in the area, including LyallBringAvenue.your walking shoes and be prepared for the weather as we will going on with the show (rain, or shine or Historicallysnow). yours! of of Susan Legge as & acted as volunteer and previous to as Susan gained significant exposure to Metro Community its needs. About 150 years ago the area in the present east end of Toronto, from Coxwell to Victoria Park avenues, was what we could call a tourist area. There were many amuse ment parks, picnic grounds, carnivals, and a race track. Because of the beauty of the area with its proximity to Lake Ontario, beaches, and parks, this was a haven for the citizens of Toronto and beyond to come and visit – especially on hot sum merSomedays.of the parks in the area were Victoria Park, Munro Park, Balmy Beach, Scarborough Beach Park, Kew Gardens, Woodbine Race Track, and Small’s Pond Beach Park. People would flock to the east end by the Overthousands.theyears, however, the amusement parks came to an end and the area was built up with houses and also recreation areas of smaller size. The east end is still at tracting sporting, recreation and nature lovers to our wonderful outdoor areas. There has been over the years, though, a controversy over what was the correct name for this east end play ground.Inreality, there are names for the different beaches and that is where the controversy began (to the consternation of many local residents).Atonepoint a few de cades ago, street signs on Queen Street East pro claimed the area to be called

However, nectarines and plums do not have to be blanched (have their skins removed before using.) Peaches in Whisky Sauce That unique peach taste intensifies when served warm. Thus, one of the sim plest most delicious reci pes are peaches in whiskey sauce. How can you go wrong with peaches, brown sugar, butter with a splash of whis ky?Blanche: To peel peaches, you may have to “blanch” them first, that is immerse the peaches in boiling water for about 1 minute. Drain. Rinse in cold water and starting at the pit end, gently remove the skin. The blanch ing kills the enzymes under the skin and allows the skin to slip off easily. 4 peaches ripe, blanched and peeled, quartered then cut in half again

ReBloom Flowers helps spread joy and protect the environment

Top Shelf not only provided her access to a large quantity of flowers before and after events, it gave her a front row seat to just how many of those flowers go to waste. “I just couldn’t handle it,” said Crump. “Dumpster bins would beWhat’sfull.” worse is that much of those florals would end up in landfills instead of being com posted which is much better for the environment, said Crump. To combat the impact on the environment, as well as get those flowers to people that would enjoy and appreciate them, Crump founded ReBloom Flowers in Calgary in 2014 do nating repurposed flowers to lo calSincecharities.then, ReBloom has ex panded to Toronto, diverting more than 50 tons of floral waste from landfills by partnering up with some 3,000 charitable orga nizations such as The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, eye cancer care centres, women’s and family shelters, hospices, hospitals and more. Along with spreading joy and feelings of togetherness, and that tactile sense of touching na ture, another of ReBloom’s core tenets is being environmentally conscious.Theenvironmental priority is manifested in a number of ways. It is shown by ReBloom’s de sire to, and success in, divert ing florals from landfills, and in their policy to not ship their flowers over long distances, such as between their centres in Calgary and Toronto. It wouldn’t make much sense to undo all the good ReBloom does in eliminat ing floral waste by increasing emissions and having their flow ers shipped across the country, saidThankfullyCrump. there’s an easy fix, she said. “Pick a charity that speaks to your heart in the city that you’re in and we’ll do our best to bring it there,” said Crump.ReBloom’s environmentally conscious practices don’t stop there. Once their repurposed flowers are delivered and spread all the joy their petals can mus ter, ReBloom will return with compost bags to collect those flowers.“Wecreate soil from the used flowers,” said Crump. “Then we donate that back to the commu nity garden so it just completes the life cycle of the flowers es sentially.”Aswell as sending flowers to ReBloom, there are other ways to aid the environment when it comes to your flowers and a lot of that starts with awareness ac cording to Crump. Most importantly, flowers can, and should, be put in compost. That will go a long way to keep ing them out of landfills. Another tip is to be conscious of “hot spot” occasions for flow ers such as Mother’s Day, Valen tine’s Day, as well as big events like weddings. Having a plan to care for, and safely dispose of, these flowers should be a key factor when acquiring them, she said.In addition, purchasing flow ers that are in season and those that are less environmentally taxing to cultivate is important according to Crump. “Lilies,” said Crump. “You can’t go wrong with lilies!”

Acoustic Harvest announces performers for fall concerts

LOCAL RESIDENT Peter Sinclair is allowing people to see photos from the past and the present in a different way as part of his three-di mensional image creations. Sinclair uses the Anaglyph imaging process, which is la bour intensive and is similar in a way to what is done to bank notes to create holo If you have pair of redblue 3D glasses handy (and who doesn’t) take a look at the above im age through them and let us know if it’s pop ping off the page in three dimensions for you. If you don’t have 3D glasses, the im age at left is what this photo along Kingston Road, looking west from Kingswood Road in 1967, looks like as regular image. graphic images. It basically allows a regular photograph to be altered so that it can be seen in three dimensions (3D) when looking through red-blue glasses or filters. For Sinclair, 75, his main goal in creating the photos is to bring local history to life by having the images jump off the paper or page they are printed on.

“My interest is really in local and vintage photos,” he said in an interview with Beach Metro Community NewsScanningrecently.an older image, and then working on it on his computer, Sinclair creates the 3D image by separating colours and shifting the lay ers of the images. If the original photo is black and white, he colouriz es it with red and blue for the 3DAlongprocess.with photographs which can be created in a number of sizes, Sinclair can also make 3D posters and calendars with the images. One of the posters he has made features vehicles of the 1920s photographed on Toronto streets. “I’m one of the few people worldwide who does this,” said Sinclair. A resident of the Beach since 1967, Sinclair took up the creation of the 3D images after his retirement. “This is a unique display method of local history and I’m not aware of anyone else who is doing neighbourhood pictures in this way,” said Sinclair.Heis doing the work as a business, and is happy to talk with anyone in the com munity who has photos that they would like him to scan and turn into 3D images for them.Sinclair can be contacted by email at ronto@gmail.competersinclairto

“We have many farmers of all dif ferent sizes and scales, but many urban growers don’t have the abil ity to be at a booth for the whole season because they don’t have enough production,” Queirolo said. “This table can make them worth it.”The stand also provides employ ment to local residents, especially youth, interested in food produc tion, marketing, and distribution.

In addition, any unsold ingredients will be picked up by the partnered local food bank to ensure nothing is wasted.ForForde, this aggregated table enables her to start markets in ar eas of need and provide a consis tent supply of fresh ingredients at affordable prices to benefit custom ers and farmers who can focus on increasing their growing capacity. The markets will also partner with local food banks and commu nity agencies to launch a “market bucks” coupon program for fami lies selected by the food bank who are currently experiencing food insecurity.Selected families will receive $20 for a period of six weeks to pur chase any kind of vegetables, fruit, eggs, herbs or honey at the market fresh foods table. While commerce is the main function of markets, they are also great community spaces. And mar ket managers like Forde create wel coming public spaces where resi dents can enjoy themselves. Due to the way large grocery stores rely on global supply chains Toronto has only three days’ worth of food, she said. Toronto has more than 100 di verse public markets, and Queirolo collaborates with market manag ers, like Forde, policy makers and researchers to rebuild the mid-size food distribution infrastructure an chored in local farmers and food entrepreneurs.Thisseason, they are launching two programs that support a mar ket model that is better suited to the Scarborough context. An aggregate table called the On tario Fresh Food Table, aggregates 20 producers in one booth, bringing affordable Ontario produce, includ ing organic offerings. With proper signage, the stand recognizes the providence of the in gredients and the farmers involved, including many urban growers that cannot produce enough to supply a single table for an entire season.

JENNIFER FORDE, the founder of the Courtyard and Scarborough Farmers’ Markets, is leading the charge to provide nutritious food to east-end communities.

Forde wants to not only help farmers and vendors develop their brand but aims “to work with di verse communities that reflect the communities and neighbourhoods we serve in the spirit of community health and wellness.”

Farmers’ markets add to health and wellness of community

The Scarborough Farmers’ Mar ket started in 2018 with the launch of the Malvern Farmers’ Market in northeast Scarborough. The goal was to bring nutrientdense, fairly priced, culturally ap propriate fresh fruits and vegeta bles as well as lifestyle products to theThearea.vendors were family-owned farms, women-led enterprises and ethno-cultural businesses that rep resent the diversity and richness of Toronto. Items for sale included fresh vegetables, fruits and meats, prepared foods like homemade samosas and baked goods, and or ganic handmade products such as soySincecandles.2019, Forde has been col laborating with Marina Queirolo, founder and steward of Market City TO. Queirolo has 20 years’ ex perience in public markets, first as a vendor, then a market manager of Evergreen Brick Works, and now a researcher and advocate for public markets.“Markets are the engine for in clusive economic development and great at supporting local food, as such we need to not only pro tect markets, but also increase residents understanding about the importance supporting neighbour hoods markets,” said Queirolo.

Amy Reuben helps share the healing powers of yoga

Amy Reuben leads a yoga class in Taylor Creek Park recently. Everyone is wel come to the free sessions on Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

By Kimberly Dias NOT EVERYONE can en dure the curveballs that life throws at them and come out stronger than before. But Amy Reuben is one such per son that did and continues to do so. For that she credits Kundalini Yoga which she describes to be her ‘salva tion.’Reuben started her jour ney with yoga in 1999 when she was grieving the loss of her mother in Toronto. “I was living in New Or leans, Louisiana. I was a sin gle mom raising my daugh ter and she was a toddler. I was not here to be with my mom when she passed here in Toronto. I was devastated. I was bottoming out—bottles of scotch, depression and grief,” she said. Reuben credited her first teacher, Siobhan MacMach an, for introducing her to Kundalini Yoga and giving her the tools to cope with her grief. She said that after three months of practice she started feeling better. Reu ben said she did not feel vic timized anymore and cred ited yoga with helping her healing. She moved to Toronto in 2020 and has her home-based yoga studio called Sat Nam Yoga Studio in Danforth Vil lage.Reuben said Kundalini Yoga is the umbrella for all other forms of yoga. She said that there are 22 ancient forms of yoga, many of which are no longer in existence. However, seven of them fall under the Kundalini um brella, she said. “When you are practic ing Kundalini Yoga, you are using all seven of them to gether. The main benefactor is the nervous system which governs all other systems of the body - cardiovascular system, the skeletal system, the muscular system, the endocrine system, lymphatic system, all of this is governed by your nervous system. And that’s the major benefit that you’re tapping into your ner vous system very quickly,” saidDuringReuben. the summer months, Reuben has outdoor drop-in community classes at Taylor Creek Park on Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Those wish ing to take part are asked to wear comfortable clothes, and to bring their own blan kets, mats and water bottles. Along with the outdoor classes, Reuben also offers services in Kundalini Yoga and meditation, Tantric Yoga Numerology Reading, Vaastu Shastra and Divine Alignment. These are held during the week from Mon day to Thursday and are offered both in private and semi-private sessions.

It is with love and peace in our hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Lenore Diaz on August 13, 2022.

“It’s hard to imagine a world without Oma”, said her granddaughter. “There is part of her in all of us” said another.

21BEACH METRO COMMUNITY NEWSTuesday, August 23, 2022 We’re here for you 1821 Danforth Avenue • 416-690-1032 mmcmahon.mpp.co @ liberal.ola.org

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Mary Hall on July 29, Beloved2022.wifeof 64 years to Bill. Proud mother to Linda (Merv) and Em (Brice). Adoring grandmother to Rowan and Olivia. Sister to Edward Carr and the late Joan Sullivan (nee Carr). Mary enjoyed the operatic society of her hometown in Aberdare, Wales, and also sang at The Royal Albert Hall London in 1977 with 1,000 Welsh voices and did theatre as a child. Mary loved to bake, make jam, make wine and beer with Bill as a hobby. The family emigrated to Canada in the late 80s from the land of song and Mary picked back up her career as a successful sales clerk in Toronto in the clothing industry. She worked for Marks & Spencer, and then D’Allaird’s.

Norma (Ann) Patterson passed away Tuesday August 2, 2022 at Scarborough Centenary Hospital. Ann was born March 8, 1935, in Toronto, to Reta and John North. Loving mother of Karen Whalley (Michael). Cherished friend/cousin of Shelley Martin (John). Predeceased by Norm Carter in 1993, her husband of 24 years, and William Hank Patterson, in 2019, her husband of 25 years.

Lenore, the wife of the late Andres; the daughter of Maud Fleming Green and James Moffat Green, sister to Thomas (Debra), the late James (Louise), Robert (Micheline and Nancy) and Ronnie. She will be lovingly remembered as their adventuresome Oma by Andres (Emma) and Cherie (Ryan), Georgina and Julien, Jenna Marie (Marco), Kirstin (Paul) and Cleo, her great grandchildren Jacob, Lucas, Selena, Camila and Greyson. Her children Segunda (Seena) Joaquin and Christine, the late Andres and his late wife Susan along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Lenore was generous with her life. Her welcoming nature was extended to family, friends, neighbours, students and strangers. For that reason our family home was open to all and filled with love and laughter, troubles and tears. Lenore was known to many through her long association with the Ward Nine News (now Beach Metro), through her leadership at the East City YMCA in Toronto and through the Toronto District School Board. She lived for the last five years at The Wexford Long Term Care Residence, so we wish to thank all of the staff there for their good, kind work and their professional service. We would like to pay special tribute to the wonderful staff on the 7th floor who cared for our mother with love and kindness throughout.

Nuit Blanche’s East Danforth Hub seeks volunteers

Ann's passions included photography, theatre arts, singing, dancing, travelling, volunteering and her rescue cats. Ann was a wonderful person who loved company and enjoyed keeping busy. Ann loved to dress up and get in the spirit of St. Patrick's Day and Halloween to name a few. House decorating for those events and Canada Day were a must. Ann loved her time at the Kew Beach United Church Couple's Club. Ann and her husband Norm ran Carter and Carter Photography on Queen St. from 1978 to 1989.
