SO MUCH TO CELEBRATE Community, Mindfulness, and Innovation have been the throughlines of a Bay education for 15 years.
2018-2019 marked a milestone for The Bay School — a decade and a half of innovative education! In March, the Bay community, past and present, showed up to honor Bay’s 15th Anniversary at a huge Birthday Block Party. Our founding leaders joined staffulty, students, alumni, and families to reconnect over shared experiences, and more importantly, the values that still guide us today. We heard Bay’s first cohort of students and faculty speak passionately about Bay just as we do today. And that’s something to celebrate!

March 23, 2019 was a landmark day in Bay history as we celebrated our 15th Anniversary with friends old and new.

The festivities began with an early-morning block party in the Presidio, and the good times rolled all the way to Bimbo’s for our 15th Anniversary Bay Splash. From panel discussions with some of the school’s distinguished founders, to the introduction of our first-ever mascot, Blue the Breaker, the throughlines were community and keeping students at the center.

Bay welcomes all students to come as they are, and grow into their full selves. From Bay’s first Morning Meeting to the latest community gathering, the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, has only deepened. We still gather for Morning Meeting four days a week because this is the foundation of Bay’s community and culture. It’s where we cultivate curiosity, connect with new ideas, and learn about each other so that we may better know the world and ourselves. As enrollment grew to capacity, we expanded our student life office, theater productions, athletic programs, and elective offerings to ensure that every student feels seen, heard, and valued. In addition, The Bay Family Association (BFA) has expanded and simplified ways for families to connect and get involved in the life of the school.

Mindfulness is foundational to Bay. Bay is a pioneer in integrating mindfulness into each student's daily educational experience. Mindfulness strengthens intentionality and determination to achieve one’s goals. Teaching students the practice of mindfulness — using one’s breath to center and calm, observing one’s thoughts without judgment in order to be responsive rather than reactive — reflects Bay’s commitment to supporting the whole person and building community. Grounded in our precepts, Bay students and staffulty think carefully and collaboratively about change and the consequences of our choices. In practicing mindfulness, we reflect on how well we live up to our aspirations, and we change to meet the dynamic needs of students and our community. Responding to new challenges with purpose, we strive to create the world we want to see.

Bay prepares students for a world we cannot even imagine. Bay teaches students to approach problem-solving with innovative thinking that stems from curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to go beyond the status quo in order to discover something new. Bay’s reimagined academic schedule puts innovation into action, merging full-semester coursework with the opportunity to engage with local, regional, and national experts in a chosen field of study. Immersives offer an experiential, often place-based curriculum that allows students to go deeply into a problem, examine it in the real world from multiple perspectives, and develop viable solutions. It’s an academic experience that fosters authentic engagement, independence, and connection.
