Why does Bay have the Flexible Tuition Program?

2018-2019 Tuition & Fees $48,500

The Bay School of San Francisco is committed to equity and inclusion. As part of this commitment, Bay seeks to make its educational resources and opportunities available to all students regardless of their family’s financial profile. Moreover, Bay understands that diversity is essential to a thriving school culture, one where students truly learn from one another and help each other succeed. Diversity in all of its forms — including socio-economic diversity — enables us to deliver on our educational mission.

Every family’s financial profile is different. Below are simplified examples of how some Flexible Tuition grants and tuition contributions were calculated: Flexible Tuition Profile #1 Household Profile: Two income earning parents, family of five, one child enrolling at Bay, two children at public schools. Income: $64,900 Assets: $1,500 Grant:$48,000 Family Contribution:$500

The Flexible Tuition Program provides need-based financial grants to eligible families in order to cover costs associated with tuition and fees. Need is determined through an application; the application for admission is separate from the application for Flexible Tuition, and these applications are considered independently of one another. Flexible Tuition grants are not loans, and do not need to be repaid. Although the responsibility for paying for a child’s education lies with the student’s family, Bay provides Flexible Tuition to bridge the gap between what a family can afford and the full cost of tuition.

Flexible Tuition Profile #2 Household Profile: Two income earning parents, family of four, two children in tuition charging schools. Income: $308,500 Assets: $549,044 (includes home equity) Grant: $35,500 Family Contribution: $13,000

Who can apply for Flexible Tuition? Any family can apply for Flexible Tuition. Currently, 26% of Bay families qualify for and receive Flexible Tuition. For 2018-2019, Flexible Tuition grants ranged between $5,000 and $48,000, covering 10% - 99% of tuition and fees. If your family believes Bay is the right fit for your child but is concerned that you cannot meet the tuition costs, we encourage you to apply for Flexible Tuition when your child applies for admission.

The code for The Bay School of San Francisco is #3720. Families who receive Flexible Tuition grants will be required to submit their 2018 Federal Tax Return, and W-2 or Form 1099 if applicable, by April 15, 2019.

How is the amount of a Flexible Tuition grant determined? Bay’s Flexible Tuition Committee will review each family’s financial profile, including income, major assets, special expenses, and education costs — all information provided on the PFS form. An independent third party, School and Student Services (SSS), calculates what each family may be able to contribute toward their student’s independent school education. This recommendation guides but does not bind The Bay School of San Francisco in making grant decisions. All Flexible Tuition decisions are confidential.

Do all families applying for Flexible Tuition receive grants? As is the case with most independent schools, Bay is unable to provide every qualifying family with a Flexible Tuition grant; thus, it is possible that a student may be accepted for admission yet placed on the waitlist for a Flexible Tuition grant.

When are applicants notified of their grant decision? Grant decisions are provided at the same time as admission notifications. All decisions will be mailed via USPS on March 21, 2019 and emailed on March 22, 2019 after 4:00 p.m.

If a family receives a grant, when and how do they accept the grant? Families who receive a grant and an offer of admission must notify the Admission Office of their acceptance and return their signed enrollment contracts no later than noon on Thursday, March 28, 2019. Families who wish to decline their grants and offers of admission are asked to notify the Admission Office before noon on March 28 so that funding may be redirected to a family on our Flexible Tuition waiting list.

What payment plan options does Bay offer? All new families will have three payment plan options. All payment plans are interest free. Option 1: Tuition may be paid in full in March with the enrollment contract. There is no processing fee for this option. Option 2: Tuition may be paid in three installments. With this option, 10% of tuition is due in March with the enrollment contract and serves as a non-refundable deposit; 60% of the remaining balance is due in June, with the remaining 40% due in December. A nominal processing fee is charged. Option 3: Tuition may be paid in 10 monthly installments. 10% of tuition is due in March with the enrollment contract and serves as a non-refundable deposit. Installment payments begin in June, following the student’s enrollment. A nominal processing fee is charged.
